Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, this is the
Career Refresh your resource for
career strategy, leadershipdevelopment and the tools you
need to create high-performingteams.
I'm your host, jill Griffin.
I'm a former media andmarketing executive turned
leadership strategist andexecutive coach, and I help
leaders excel in career strategy, building resilience,
(00:20):
rebuilding confidence, workingon that professional presence
and that overall brand of younarrative, and I help clients
through those reinventions,those high-stake challenges,
career transitions and alsoworking through often some
complex, tricky and maybeprickly team dynamics.
I want to make sure thateveryone is taking the lead that
(00:43):
they want to create and doingthat lead with clarity and
impact.
Today I'm talking about threestages of work job, career and
calling and why understandingthem can really change how you
see work.
Ready, let's dig in.
A job pays the bills.
(01:12):
A career builds on yourexpertise and reputation.
You start to feel a little bitmore situated, a little bit more
.
The foundation is built, youcan spread your wings, you can
advance upwards, but a calling, that's something different.
Now listen, at times I usecalling and purpose
interchangeably.
Purpose, I believe you choosebased on all the information
(01:34):
that's in front of you.
Here I'm talking about thenuance of a calling, and a
calling is something that youmay not have chosen, it chooses
you, so to speak.
It comes because of your actualexperience or from disruption.
You've built a path, you're onyour journey and suddenly
something isn't right anymore,and maybe that's because you've
(01:56):
been laid off, or maybe becausethere is a major shift in your
perspective on the work thatyou've been doing or the
industry that you work in.
But there is a shift, and itfeels real, on the work that
you've been doing or theindustry that you work in.
But there is a shift and itfeels real.
We're also going to talk alittle bit about the hero's
journey, which is the classicstory arc that explains why so
many people tend to bottom outfirst in their careers before
(02:19):
they find the true calling.
And by the end of this episode, you're going to have a roadmap
for recognizing which stageyou're in and how to move
forward to continuing to achievewhat it is that you want to
achieve in your professionaldevelopment and your career.
But listen, just because you gojob, career calling, you may
(02:41):
also go back into a job again, and I'm going to explain what I
mean by that.
So if we're getting fromdefinitions here right, so again
, job, it's necessary, it'smoney, it's survival.
It's the basics.
It's if you're in the USlistening to this, it's your
health insurance.
It's those benefits.
Career is growth, skillbuilding, upskilling, expertise,
success.
Growth, skill building,upskilling, expertise, success
(03:04):
Calling tends to come from thattransformation.
It could be a disruption, anintentional reinvention, or you
know what I surrender, I tap outthis is not working.
Going a little deeper if thejob, if getting a job, is the
base level right, a job iscovering those basic needs food,
(03:24):
rent, security, benefits itcould be enjoyable, it serves a
purpose.
I like money, I like benefits,I like to be able to do things
with my life beyond the basicneeds.
And most people start here.
This may be something thatyou're starting at right as
you're entering college.
Or if you've opted not to go tocollege, then it could be the
(03:47):
thing that is starting right asyou're leaving that timeframe of
that secondary school, thateducational school or high
school.
This is getting that first job.
But I'll also tell you thereare other times in your life
that you may be coming from alayoff or an experience where
it's just about getting a jobagain.
A good enough job.
It is good enough.
(04:07):
It is again hitting those basicneeds.
So sometimes the challenge ishere is that the work you're
doing in a job can feelrepetitive or meaningless and
you can lack some passion andengagement for what you're doing
, and there is the risk ofgetting stuck sort of in that
cycle of just getting it done, starting it over, coming back
the next day, starting it over, starting it over.
So when you're in this positionand again, this has nothing to
(04:30):
do with age, this has nothing todo with experience level you
could be a 43 year old personwho got laid off and needs to
get a job again and you're goingto start there because the
career isn't necessarily whatyou're looking for or the
marketplace isn't allowing thatin the particular career or
skill set you possess.
When you're in this space, it'sabout managing and finding ways
(04:52):
to feel fulfilled at this stage.
So I'm going to tell you tofind those small wins.
This is the micro moments whereyou find fulfillment, the
education, the network and theopportunities, the connection
with your team.
It's finding opportunities togive yourself a small win during
the day, and I also recommendthat you keep a list.
It's your victory laps, it's alist of wins that you're being
(05:16):
an appreciation for those smallmicro moments of fulfillment.
Then it's also a time where, ifyou have the bandwidth to
upgrade your skills, this istaking advantage of any training
, whether it's offered throughthe organization that you work
for, whether you're doing onlinetraining.
If you go to LinkedIn, there'stons of training.
There's Coursera, there's Udemy.
There's so many places whereyou can get training in a
(05:37):
particular skill and look touplift that you may also
consider going and taking acourse at your local community
college or a course that'soffered by.
I know like Perplexity rightnow has an AI fellowship program
.
I don't think they're acceptingapplications currently because
they just closed the cohort, butthat's also something that I
think is really, really a coolarea that you may want to engage
(05:58):
deeper in.
This is staying focused, andit's time to constantly thinking
about the bigger picture, whereyou are right now.
Again, it has nothing to dowith age.
It has nothing to do withprevious experience.
You could be in a job, and Iwant you to see that job as a
stepping stone, not a finaldestination.
If you're making a careerchange, you could be in a job
and I want you to see that jobas a stepping stone, not a final
destination.
If you're making a careerchange, you might need to take a
(06:19):
ladder job, a job that kind ofstretches you between those two,
in order to make a pivot.
That's what we're talking about.
The next part of the stages ofyour career, as we're looking
through this lens, is what wecall career, and this is where
you start getting progression.
There's some mastery, you'restarting to feel really good and
comfortable with what you'redoing, you're getting promotions
, you're getting expertise,industry reputation, financial
(06:42):
growth and you're really takingpride in what you're doing and
you're setting long-term goals.
The majority of people residehere.
They may go back to being in ajob and then then back into a
career and back and forth, andthat may happen numerous cycles
throughout your career.
Not everybody falls into thecalling bucket, which is what
we're going to talk about next.
Some of the challenges in thecareer is it can feel like a
(07:05):
little bit you probably heardthe expression of a golden cage
or golden handcuffs becausesuccess can trap you when
something isn't your passionright.
Success can keep you in aposition where you're doing it
because the money is good andit's affording the lifestyle
that you've chosen to create foryourself and or your family,
but you a little bit feeltrapped because you're like I
would love to do that, but Ican't crack the nut that I need
(07:28):
to crack every month in order tomake my overhead like what's my
burn rate?
Right?
You're thinking about that.
So that is one of thosechallenges that can happen,
especially if you're solid atwhat you do but you're finding
it less fulfilling or it's notreally within your passion.
Burnout can totally take over.
There can be overidentification, where your work
(07:48):
becomes your identity.
At this point where, if thatjob goes away and in this case I
mean the tactical job, not thestage if the career, if this
opportunity, if the title thatyou're doing and working for
goes away because of a layoff, your connection and
over-debtification with thatwork and title and company can
(08:09):
lead you to a burnout becauseyou keep doing and giving but
you're getting less and lessreturns, it's diminishing
returns on it and there couldalso be fear of taking some
risks because you're in a stablecareer and I'm not going to
leave this.
You know what?
I'm just going to stay here fora couple more years because
it's easier and it feels right.
There is nothing wrong with anyof these decisions.
I just want you to have yourown back if you make those
(08:29):
decisions.
I know plenty of people who makedecisions based on the
financial entanglements thatthey're in right, they're paying
for the mortgage, they'resaving for the college education
, they're saving for the thingsthat they want to do and they're
saying you know what I'm notgonna, you know I'm not gonna
beat myself up here, I'm goingto continue to have my own back.
(08:50):
I've made these choices.
This gives me the affordability.
I've also heard that thiscareer is working for me and it
also gives me time to spend withthe people I love the children
in my life.
If you have aging parents, italso gives you time to do that
because you have a little bit ofsecurity, because you've been
there enough, right.
But the flip side of that is itcan also lead to burnout and
(09:14):
there's the feeling of you knowwhat.
I'm not going to take any risksright now because I'm going to
stay here because of what it'saffording.
So if you find yourself in thispart of the career stage
thinking about redefiningsuccess beyond money this is
beyond salary or title I'veheard a lot of people make
comparisons based on their age, their title and their bank
(09:36):
account and then comparing it tosomebody that is younger than
them and also comparing whatthey believe is in their bank
account, their title and age,and saying like, did I achieve
enough?
And what I will tell you that Iknow to be true for sure is
that a lot of people that arehaving the title and making the
money there are other thingsthat they want.
They want that balance oflifestyle that maybe you have
(09:57):
because you're not working inthe same way or in the same
capacity.
Those are some of the ways thatyou want to think about
redefining your success.
You are creating a life and alifestyle that works for you at
this point in your career.
You know what Own it.
It's all good.
Another way to think about it isyou do want to stay curious,
because this can go from it'sworking well to being managed
(10:18):
out there rather quickly If theorganization is changing and you
are also not evolving.
You want to avoid complacency.
You want to figure out howyou're staying connected within
both your networks, internallyand managing up and out and over
and across.
You know whoever you're doingbusiness with vendors, clients,
whoever those customers arestaying curious.
And then, last, is you want tocontinue to check in with
(10:39):
yourself regularly.
Is it still filling?
Are you playing safe?
There's nothing wrong withplaying safe Again, I'm going to
keep repeating that but ifyou're playing safe and you kind
of wish you weren't, well, there's some things that you
want to start thinking about.
What changes might you make?
Is this time to talk to amentor, an internal sponsor,
(11:00):
hiring a coach?
Finding a way for you to evenincrease your capacity in what
you're doing within the companydoesn't necessarily mean you
need to change the company.
The third stage is that callingthat disruption.
Again, not everyone's going tohit this, and I don't mean
calling through a religioussense.
Again, I'm saying calling orpurpose.
This tends to happen when itcomes out of disruption, that
(11:22):
something unexpected shakes youoff or out or knocks you aside
in your career path and suddenlyyou start to question what's
happening, what you're doing, you starting to seek something
deeper.
You didn't necessarily ask forit, it's chosen you.
It could be marketplaceconditions, it could be a reorg,
it could be your healthconcerns, your lifestyle, your
(11:45):
own burnout.
You tend to not be trained forthis.
It tends to be something thatdemands that you stretch and
grow and potentially evensurrender.
And surrender I don't meandefeat, I mean acceptance, like
okay, I'm all in.
For me it was a head injury.
I did not ask for that calling.
I did not ask to have thatexperience happen to me, but
(12:08):
what it did do for me is help meget back on the beam for what I
wanted around my lifestyle, myhealth, my fitness and balance.
How am I going to fuel my bodyand how am I still going to have
a fulfilling career?
That's what I'm talking about.
You don't have to have hadsomething happen to you to that
level of severity.
It could.
Severity of your health, itcould be a layoff which can feel
(12:31):
devastating if it's happeningto you.
Severity of your health, itcould be a layoff which can feel
devastating if it's happeningto you.
You want to think about the work.
You're not trained for this, but it tends on being a catalyst
for something greater thanyourself.
And if you've studied anyJungian philosophy or if you've
looked into any of JosephCampbell's work, right, the
hero's journey a lot ofarchetypal work.
(12:53):
Right, there's the call a lotof archetypal work.
Right, there's the call toadventure.
There's like I don't want thisto happen.
Then there's this idea that yourealize the path that you're on
isn't working, and then youstart to find mentorship, you
start to seek out thattransformation and then you have
the return, which you also thenable to teach others what
you're doing.
Your calling may be within yourcareer.
(13:13):
It also may be within yourcommunity.
There could be something that'shappening within your community
that you're now also.
You didn't ask for it, but nowthat it's here and not your
doorstep, when that C comes, acalling, you're like okay, how
am I using this, both for myselfand can I use it to help others
?
The challenges here are thereis uncertainty.
There tends to be no roadmapbecause we don't necessarily
(13:36):
know what's going to happen next.
There may be a lot of selfdoubt what am I doing?
How am I working through this?
Am I right?
Have I figured this out?
This is where, again, the areasof having support whether it's
therapy, counseling, mentorship, sponsorship, coaching these are
the areas.
If those are not available toyou, there are free areas online
(13:56):
and in communities where youcan find support to help you
through this, but that's reallyone you want to make sure that
you have support.
And then, obviously, if you'rein this situation, there may
mean some starting over and needto really look at how you are
strategizing your lifestyle,your finances, accordingly.
When you're in the stage, figuring out that discomfort is
(14:18):
part of the journey.
You're going to feeluncomfortable and embracing that
uncertainty.
Remember, the only thing thatis certain is your thoughts and
your brain and your feelings andyour reactions, and that is
what you can choose to becertain on, which can give you
some level of being steady whenthings are feeling so uncertain
and rocky.
As I said before, finding amentor or community of
like-minded don't go it aloneSeeking that advice for people
(14:41):
who have walked this path orsimilar paths is really going to
help you.
And then finding the way thatthings are going to flow through
you and what I mean by that isthat you're the vessel and
you're not trying to control.
That's the surrender.
You're allowing for this nextphase to emerge Again, if you're
coming from a level ofunemployment, you are exploring
the next right option.
(15:02):
You are asking questions to thepeople around you who should you
meet?
Who should you introduce?
I never thought of doing thatbefore.
You know what.
Make the call, haveconversations with people, be in
that space of possibility.
So again, there's the job, there's the career, there's the
calling, that purpose thathappens to you, that you didn't
necessarily think you were goingafter but all of a sudden it's
(15:23):
been served up to you on aplatter.
And how are you going to moveforward successfully in this,
making sure that you don't burnyour out and you're still
feeling fulfilled, reallythinking through what sustained
you, what builds your careerright now, and thinking about if
you're in a situation where, all of a sudden, it feels as if
(15:43):
it's a calling, that you'vecompleted a cycle and you're now
here.
Next, what do you want to dowith it next when you get
through this time?
To do with it next, when youget through this time, who else
might benefit from theexperience you've had?
Friends, as always, I want tohear from you.
I want to hear, I want to hearyour experiences.
I want to know what sustainsyou, how you are finding the job
(16:08):
, the career, the calling, andwhat you are doing in order to
support yourself.
You can email me at hello atjillgriffincoachingcom and, as
