Speaker 1 (00:02):
You're listening to
the Catholic Pursuit of
Excellence, the show that helpsyou accomplish more, stress less
and become the saint Godcreated you to be.
I'm your host, life and healthcoach, jessica Castillo, and
this is our third episode in ourspecial series for thriving
Catholic entrepreneurs.
If you haven't already, Ireally encourage you to go check
(00:23):
out the first two episodes inthis series.
In the first episode, Iexplained to you basically what
the series is all about, whatyou can expect from it and why
we're doing it, and also justoutlined some of the really
damaging lies that Catholicentrepreneurs in particular can
start to believe about theirbusinesses and about their lives
(00:44):
and how to kind of avoid them.
In the second episode, Ioutline my manifesto for
thriving Catholic entrepreneurs, and this is basically a
statement of beliefs, of whatwe're after, not only in this
series, but also as Catholicentrepreneurs, and what it means
really to be a thrivingCatholic entrepreneur.
(01:07):
I think many of us can relateto and imagine and understand
what it's like to be a notthriving entrepreneur in many
ways, and I'm not talking justfinancially.
I'm talking about the kind oftrade-offs and sacrifices we
make for both our health and theway we're using our time, our
(01:27):
relationships and, in particular, our relationship with God or
our striving for virtue, and sothis series is really meant to
be a way to help us all, myselfincluded, to grow in body, mind
(01:50):
and soul, while we're alsostriving to be at our absolute
best, to perform at our best, tobe exceptional, and that's what
this series is all about andwhat we hope to achieve with it.
Okay, but all of that mightseem a little abstract.
It might be a little hard towrap your head around.
What does that actually mean ifwe're going to be thriving in
(02:12):
body, mind and soul?
What does that look like?
How do we actually do that?
So what I'm going to be doingin today's episode is going
through with you what thatstep-by-step roadmap really is.
What are the steps of howyou're going to be taking
exceptional care of your body, growing in skills of mind and
(02:35):
growing in virtue, and how doesthat all fit together?
What are the actual nittygritty action steps that you can
take?
So I do want to remind you thatthis series has a printable
resource that goes along with it, called the Thriving Catholic
Entrepreneurs Roadmap.
If you have not already, Ireally encourage you to go get
that and print it out, becausethe information that I'm
(02:57):
presenting in this podcastseries is in that roadmap, and
then just knowing that we alllearn better when we have
something to both read andlisten to, this is going to help
you to just really cement thisinformation.
But also, I've been getting alot of feedback that printing
the manifesto, in particular, has been really helpful for
(03:18):
people to just have and toreference and to remind
themselves of what they're after, what their goal is and why
they're doing this.
I think it will also be helpfulfor you to have printed out
these steps that I'm going to gothrough.
So I'm basically going to readthrough the step-by-step
framework that I've developedfor how you can become
(03:39):
burnout-proof whileaccomplishing your God-given
mission at the highest level.
This is all in the roadmap.
You can get it at athrivingcatholiccom forward
slash roadmap and I'm also goingto put the link in the show
notes so you'll see it and youcan get to it that way as well.
So, without further ado, let'stalk about what are these steps.
(04:01):
What is your roadmap tobecoming a burnout-proof,
thriving Catholic entrepreneur?
Okay, here we go.
Step number one improve thequality and quantity of your
sleep.
Sleep is an absolutely criticalcomponent to every aspect of
(04:22):
your health and happiness and iteven affects the quality of
your spiritual life.
I once heard a priest say thatabout 80% of sins are committed
because a person was sleepdeprived, which really makes
sense when you recognize how alack of sleep messes with your
impulse control.
So step number one the fastestway to becoming burnout-proof is
(04:44):
to establish healthy sleephabits.
Set a consistent bedtime thatallows you to have eight hours
in bed and stick to it.
Step number two get clear onyour priorities.
No one can do it all and eventhough we all know this, we tend
to act like it doesn't apply tous.
(05:04):
And even though we all knowthis, we tend to act like it
doesn't apply to us and we tryto take on more and more tasks
that ultimately will not help usto reach our goals.
You have to simplify, toamplify, so by focusing on the
few things that really alignwith your priorities and that
only you can do, you freeyourself up to be really great
in those areas can do.
(05:28):
You free yourself up to bereally great in those areas.
So step number two is to decidewhat is important to you and to
get really comfortable witheliminating everything that
isn't.
I know it's easier said thandone, but this is really
transformative Step number three.
Transformative Step numberthree make a plan for spiritual
(05:50):
growth.
So when we have a goal that wewant to achieve, we make a plan.
If you want to reach a certainstrength goal, you don't just
wander into the gym and yourandomly pick up a few weights
and you hope for the best.
But this haphazard approach isexactly how many of us approach
our spiritual lives and, honestly, the stakes are much
higher than getting into shapefor swimsuit season, right.
So step number three is todevelop a plan for what prayer
(06:15):
practices God is calling you toimplement in your life right now
.
You should start withscheduling mass and confession
and then add in personal prayerdisciplines.
So this takes a little bit ofdiscernment, but write down your
plan like have an actual planthat you are following and this
(06:37):
will help you grow in yourspiritual life.
Step number four is to upgradeyour diet for maximum energy,
focus and health.
It is so true that you are whatyou eat.
It is impossible to be at yourbest if your diet consists of
leftover chicken nuggets offyour kid's lunch plate and a bag
(06:58):
of flaming hot Cheetos forlunch.
So when your focus is onfueling your body with
performance enhancing foods.
That's when you're going to beable to really feel your best
every day.
So step number four is to focuson eating high quality protein,
healthy fats and lots of fiber, especially in the form of
(07:19):
vegetables, at every meal andsnack to rapidly upgrade your
energy and focus.
This really does make a hugedifference and it doesn't take
that long when you change yourdiet for you to start really
feeling the benefits reallyquickly.
Like within a few days you willbe feeling so much better.
(07:39):
So that's step number four.
Step number five block out timefor deep work.
Busyness is literally the enemyof productivity.
So if you want to make theimpact that you were made for,
then you must carve out the timeand space to do the important,
(08:00):
but often not urgent work ofyour business, but often not
urgent work of your business.
So these are the tasks thatrequire your full focus and they
stretch you to the limits ofyour capabilities, but they also
provide the biggest payoff.
So step five is to schedulebetween two to four hours of
deep work focus blocks on everyworking day and then treat those
(08:26):
times like an appointment.
Everything else is going to getscheduled around your deep work
time.
This will move the needle morethan anything else and it really
forces you again to do thosetasks that require your focus
and that really stretch you andthat really force you to be at
your best.
So that's step five.
(08:47):
Step number six incorporate adaily examine.
So the question is how will youknow if you're making spiritual
progress?
How will you know what God isasking you to do in the
day-to-day nitty-gritty of yourlife?
Well, the answer is you won'tunless you take the time every
(09:11):
day to regularly review whereGod is showing up and to make a
regular commitment to renewingyour points of spiritual work.
So step number six is to add afive to 10 minute daily examine
to the end of every day.
That's so that you can makespiritual progress and recognize
(09:31):
how God is leading you.
Step number seven use exerciseas a performance enhancer.
The world's top performers arefamously committed to exercise,
and that's with good reason.
Okay, exercise boosts yourenergy, your productivity and
(09:51):
your focus, while helping you tomanage the stress that is
inherent with pushing yourselfto be at the top of your game.
Like you are striving to beexceptional and to be at your
best, that comes with a fairamount of stress.
But stress isn't always a badthing.
It can push us to be better, and exercise is one of the ways
that we can manage that.
So step number seven is to notskimp on your daily movement.
(10:16):
So even if you are just doing aquick 15 minute walk, this can
do wonders for your ability tomanage your stress and to boost
your energy.
Step number eight Tip numbereight decide who you want to be.
Then become that person.
So one of the easiest ways todevelop a new habit is to think
(10:40):
of yourself as the kind ofperson who does that habit.
So, for instance, instead ofsaying I don't smoke, it's
actually more powerful to sayI'm a non-smoker.
So the question is who do youwant to be?
What kind of person is yourideal self?
Is he or she patient with theirkids, confident and capable in
(11:06):
their work and loving with theirspouse?
Think about that.
Envision yourself who's theideal version of you.
So step number eight is todevelop a series of statements
that describe your ideal self, and then you're going to use
that as a filter to screen outunwanted behaviors and embrace
(11:28):
desirable ones.
Step number nine is to commit todeep mental prayer, the great
doctor of the church, saintTeresa of Avila, once said he
who neglects mental prayer needsnot a devil to carry him to
hell, but he brings himselfthere with his own hands.
So if you want to thrive inevery aspect of your life, then
(11:53):
you have to turn to the sourceof life itself and drink deeply
the living water that he offersyou daily.
So step number nine is to learnmethods for deep mental prayer
and commit to a regular timeeach day to encounter the Lord
in this intimate way.
Okay, we are at the halfwaypoint of the Thriving Catholic
(12:19):
Entrepreneurs Roadmap.
It might seem like a lot, andso if you're starting to feel a
little overwhelmed as you'relistening to all these steps, I
just want you to remember thatthe reason they're presented as
steps is because you do not haveto do all of these things all
at once and, honestly, Istructured it in this way and
put it in this order for areason.
(12:40):
So each of these things isgoing to kind of build on and
enable the next step.
So don't worry if you're like, wow, this is an awful lot.
It's more than I can possiblydo.
You can do one step at a time.
That's what it's meant for.
So it's all good.
Okay, we are halfway there, let's drive on.
(13:01):
We've got steps 10 through 18to go, so bear with me, we can
do this.
Step number 10 is to mind yourgut.
According to Hippocrates, alldisease begins in the gut, and
modern medicine is actuallyshowing that he wasn't far off
the mark.
The trillions of microbes thatlive inside your gut influence
(13:26):
just about every aspect of yourhealth, including your immunity,
your hormone production, yourmetabolism and even how happy
you feel.
So step number 10 is tooptimize your gut microbiome
through targeted nutrition andlifestyle strategies so that you
can have more energy, bettermetabolism, improved mood and
(13:48):
focus and a stronger immunesystem.
Step number 11 is to lean intoyour strengths.
Do you know what your strengthsare?
So many of us are familiar withareas that we're weak in, or we
have a tendency to spend a lotof time and energy improving
areas of weakness.
(14:09):
But what if you chose to focusinstead on leveraging your
strengths, the gifts, thetalents, the charisms and the
natural abilities that God hasgiven you?
You've been uniquely equippedto fulfill the mission that he
has called you to, so stepnumber 11 is to figure out what
(14:30):
those strengths are.
Take an online spiritual giftsinventory.
Take the CliftonStrengthsFinderassessment or really any other
assessment tools that help youidentify your strengths and then
find a way to use them moreoften in your work and in your
life.
So, for instance, you mightstill have the same tasks that
(14:54):
you need to perform, but byleaning on your particular
strengths and talents and tryingto find ways to use them to get
those tasks accomplished, thisis going to help you not only be
more effective, but it's goingto feel good for you.
It feels good using yourstrengths, so that's step number
11.
You, it feels good using yourstrengths, so that's step number
(15:17):
11.
Step number 12 is to get helpfrom Mama Mary.
So I could say so much aboutthe immense and powerful graces
that come from praying therosary, but I'm just going to
let some saints do it for me.
So here's a quote from SaintPadre Pio.
He says some people are sofoolish that they think they can
(15:37):
go through life without thehelp of the Blessed Mother.
Love the Madonna and pray therosary for her.
Rosary is the weapon againstthe evils of the world.
Today, all graces given by Godpass through the Blessed Mother.
And St Jose Maria Escriva saidthe Holy Rosary is a powerful
(15:58):
weapon.
Use it with confidence andyou'll be amazed at the results.
So step number 12 is toincorporate praying the rosary
into your spiritual plan, intoyour spiritual plan.
(16:18):
Okay, step number 13, masteryour hormones.
So your hormones are thosechemical messengers that
regulate and coordinate justabout every process in your body
.
So this ranges from yourreproductive health to your
weight, to your emotions, yourbone health, your immune
function and more.
If your hormones are out ofbalance, it's a little like
driving a car with a flat tireyes, you can limbo long for a
(16:40):
while, but you certainly willnot be thriving.
So step number 13 is to learnhow to balance and optimize your
hormones so that you're workingwith your body, and this
includes, for women, masteringyour menstrual cycle and, for
everybody, managing stresseffectively, because the stress
hormone, cortisol, can reallywreak havoc on all of the other
(17:05):
hormones in our bodies.
So that's step number 13.
Step number 14 is to get clearon your goals and to make a
strategic plan.
So you have to ask yourselfwhat do you actually want to
achieve in your business and inyour life, and how will you know
(17:27):
that you're achieving quoteunquote success in any area
that's important to you?
So, given ultimate success issainthood right.
However, it is nice to havesome benchmarks along the way
before we die.
So goal setting is reallyinherently motivating in and of
itself.
It can motivate you, and onceyou actually have a destination,
(17:51):
that's when you can create aplan for how to get there.
So step number 14 is todetermine five to seven goals
that are going to move theneedle for you the most in the
next three to six months, andthen you break each goal into
smaller goals and tasks and thatcan actually direct your
day-to-day activities.
(18:11):
So remember, earlier we talkedabout blocking out times for
deep work.
Well, these importantneedle-moving activities are
kind of what you structure intoyour deep work blocks.
Step number 15.
Let God speak to you inscripture.
So it has been said that prayeris how we talk to God and
(18:34):
scripture is how God talks to us, and I believe that God can
communicate with each individualsoul in a variety of ways.
That's totally true.
But there's also no questionthat God's own words in
scripture.
They're a privileged place ofencounter, and there is no
(18:55):
better way to embrace God'svision of the world than by
immersing yourself in scripture.
So if you want to have the mostclarity, the best vision, then
you really do have to immerseyourself and get to know God's
word in scripture so much better.
So step number 15 is to learnthe ancient practice of Lectio
(19:18):
Divina and allot time in yourschedule to allow God to speak
to you in this way.
Step number 16, optimize yourbrain health.
So cognitive processes such asmemory, attention, problem
solving and creativity.
These play pivotal roles in ourperformance.
So, whether it's excelling atwork, academics or even just
(19:43):
your daily tasks, by nurturingyour brain health you can
enhance these cognitiveabilities and achieve greater
success.
So step number 16 is tounderstand and optimize the
lifestyle factors and thisincludes some of the things
we've already talked about, likesleep, stress management,
nutrition and brain trainingthat can impact your cognitive
(20:04):
performance.
To sharpen your mentalfaculties, that's step 16.
Step number 17, your mentalfaculties that's step 16.
Step number 17, establishhealthy boundaries.
I heard once the actressElizabeth Olsen, famously quoted
as saying no is a completesentence and of course, the
homeschooling English teacher inme is like no, actually it's a
(20:28):
sentence fragment, but that'sokay.
That's besides the point.
The important thing here is torecognize that you get to
establish boundaries thatprotect your mental, emotional,
physical and spiritual health, and you don't have to make
justifications about it.
It is okay for you to just sayno, thank you or no, like it's
(20:51):
fine.
It's totally fine.
In fact, it's yourresponsibility to set these
boundaries, because if you don't, they're going to default to
someone else's standards.
And so step number 17 is todecide what you're currently
saying yes to that is drainingyou, and find a way to say no
(21:14):
with confidence.
Okay, final step, step number18.
This is an important one.
Step number 18 is to prepare forwar.
This is because, if you haveembarked on the path of becoming
a thriving Catholicentrepreneur, if you have
(21:36):
dedicated yourselves toexcellence of body of mind and,
most importantly, soul, myfriend, you are now a threat to
the evil one, and he will doeverything in his power to drag
you down or stop you fromachieving the mission that God
has made you for.
Expect this attack, anticipatehis tactics.
(22:03):
Don't be surprised by this.
Don't be surprised when youencounter adversity and
difficulty and strife.
You are on a battlefield, so beready for it.
Step number 18 is to gird yourloins and put on the whole armor
of God.
Learn about the strategies andtactics of the devil so that you
(22:25):
can be on your guard.
Okay, so there you have it.
That is the roadmap.
Those are the 18 steps for thestep-by-step process of how you
can be thriving in body, mindand soul as a Catholic
entrepreneur, how you can bereally burnout-proof while
(22:45):
performing at the highest level.
So if you are thinking toyourself, that was kind of a lot
.
I don't even remember what stepnumber one was at this point,
or maybe step four or seven orwhatever.
Don't worry, you can get all ofthis printed out.
Go to a thriving catholiccom, forward slash roadmap or click
(23:06):
the link in the show notes.
You can print these out foryourself.
And if you're also thinking, okay, all of this sounds great,
but it's also a lot, and how inthe world am I going to actually
, in my current overwhelmedstate, apply any of this into my
life?
Well, again, I just want toremind you please consider this
as a step-by-step process.
(23:27):
It builds on itself.
You don't have to do everythingall at one time.
And in next week's episode I'mgoing to be going through with
you the formula for how youactually incorporate these
habits and these strategies.
How do you incorporate them inyour life in a way that works,
in a way that fits, in a waythat's not overwhelming, but
(23:48):
that's actually really doable.
So that's going to be in nextweek's episode of this special
series.
So, again, go get the roadmapand I will be back next week to
talk to you about how you canactually build all these habits.
That is it for me this week.
Until next time, remember thatit is Jesus who inspires you to
(24:10):
do something great with yourlife, so don't let yourself be
ground down by mediocrity.
Bye for now.
