Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey there, it's Darcy
Sullivan from Propel Marketing
and Design and the ClinicMarketing Podcast.
Thank you so much for listeninghere.
I think you're going to enjoythis clip.
It's from a popular episode inour archives, don't forget.
You can leave a review oniTunes.
It would mean the world.
It helps spread the word aboutthis podcast.
(00:22):
All right, let's get into theepisode.
Hello and welcome.
I do apologize if I still sounda little bit congested.
If you're putting together yourclinic's website for the first
time, this episode is for you.
Now, if you already have awebsite and you're planning a
(00:45):
website redesign, I think youwill still find value in this
episode.
We will be filming a specificepisode coming up soon that
purely dives into what it's likeand what you should consider
for a website redesign.
But in today's episode I'mgoing to be sharing with you the
(01:05):
process for setting up awebsite for the first time, and
I'll be sharing with you sometips so that you can set it up
with ease, along with discussinga few items you should spend
your money on when you'resetting up your website for the
first time and where you canpull back the budget in areas
(01:26):
that you can save when you'resetting up a website for the
first time and it all startswith the URL.
That's what you type intoGoogle to go to your website.
You want to make sure that, ifyou're picking out a URL for the
first time, that it's short andsweet but also matches the name
(01:48):
of your business or is close torepresenting the name of your
business, so that when you tellpeople to go to your website,
wwwnameofwebsitecom, it's veryeasy for them to find it.
That you haven't been toocreative when it comes to the
lettering or gone too off therails in the length of the URL,
(02:13):
that you keep it simple andsweet so it's easy for them just
to simply type it in and foryour website to come up.
Once you've figured out whatURL you want to use for your
website, the next thing you wantto do is decide on a platform
and hosting.
These days, there are so manywebsite platforms out there that
(02:37):
make it easier than ever forpeople that are just getting
started to put together awebsite.
Now, if you're putting togethera website for the first time,
you might be short on budget anddecide that you're going to do
your DIY version of a website,or you might want to hire some
(02:58):
help.
You can go all the way up tohiring an SEO company or a
professional website company toput together your first website,
or you could look to Fiverr orUpwork for assistance, or you
might want to go the DIY route.
If you decide to go the DIYroute, there are some platforms
(03:24):
that are easier for you to setup than those that require a
little bit more assistance and alittle bit more tech know-how.
Out of all of the websiteplatforms, I tend to recommend
and love WordPress.
Wordpress can be a little bitdifficult for those that aren't
(03:46):
that tech savvy, so if you arelooking to design a WordPress
website, you might want toconsider getting a little help.
If you're a tech novice, now, when it comes to WordPress,
that's the foundation.
That would be the platform thatyou're using, but you also need
(04:10):
hosting.
When it comes to a WordPresswebsite, hosting is where your
files actually sit, and for thatI suggest WP Engine.
In the notes section associatedwith this podcast, you'll be
able to find links to all of theitems that we're going to
reference here.
(04:31):
Now, if you're going the DIYroute and you don't fancy
yourself a techie person, youmight want to consider either
Squarespace, wix or Clinic sites.
All of these platforms offereasy to use templates and the
(04:53):
ability to set things up easilyif you're really not that tech
savvy.
Now, I mentioned before thatWordPress is generally the
platform that I would suggestthat you go with if you do have
a little bit of tech assistance.
When it comes to WordPress, there are tons of themes, and
(05:17):
leveraging pre-built themes willgive you the ability to cut
some of the overhead off, because you're not starting
directly from scratch.
You're starting with a theme.
Now.
Wix and Squarespace alsoinclude themes that you can
check out, and that's what givesthe site that overall structure
(05:37):
and design.
Once you've decided whichplatform you want to go with,
next you're going to want tostart to pull together the
content that you need for yourwebsite.
You can think of these like theingredients for your recipe
it's a lot easier to gathereverything together before you
(05:57):
start to bake, right.
So you want to pull togethertext visuals.
These could be your logo, realphotos, stock photos,
illustrations, testimonials, videos, your social media links,
and you're going to want toalso include tracking, such as
(06:17):
Google Analytics.
I highly recommend, as soon asyou kickstart your website, that
you go through the process ofadding Google Analytics.
Google Analytics is going totrack the data of how people
came to your site, what they'redoing on your website.
It's going to give youinformation that's going to help
guide you with the content thatyou're going to want to modify
(06:42):
on your website and continue toadd to your website to grow your
audience larger.
We talked for a minute aboutwhat content you need, what
elements, what ingredients foryour recipe that you want to
gather, and I want to kind of goback through those and we'll go
through them one by one, starting with your logo.
(07:05):
Now, your logo is a place where, if you're just getting started
, you can save a little money.
You can go to Fiverr or you cango to Upwork to have a logo
designed, and right now thereare tons of resources out there
that will help you design aprofessional looking logo at a
(07:26):
very low rate.
What you want to make sure ofwhen you're having a logo
designed is that it's reallyeasy for someone to understand
what the name of the company iswhen they read the logo, so you
don't want to get too creativeor too crazy with fonts that it
(07:47):
makes it hard to read orunderstand what the logo is
trying to say as you go togather your ingredients for the
recipe that we'll call yourwebsite.
You want to go out and look atwhat your competition is doing,
but please be sure not to justdirectly copy exactly what
(08:11):
they're doing.
So you can go out and take alook, but don't copy word for
word what they're doing.
Now, when it comes to thecontent that you need on your
website, you're going to want toput together a bit of text.
What I suggest for this is thatyou kind of open up a Google
Doc and you start to write andorganize your content on there
(08:35):
before you actually load it toyour website website.
If you've listened to thispodcast before, maybe one of the
blogging episodes, one of myfavorite tools that I've
mentioned on that episode and alot of other episodes, is
Grammarly, and Grammarly willhelp you make sure that you are
(08:56):
using proper grammar andspelling.
Grammar and spelling, which weall know, is very important on
your website, since your websiteis not a digital brochure.
Your website is way more thanthat.
There are a couple key pagesthat you want to make sure that
(09:17):
you include when you're puttingtogether your website for the
first time.
This includes the homepage Onyour homepage.
You want to make sure that it'svery crystal clear what you
offer, that if you offer morethan one service, that it's
highlighted on the homepage.
(09:38):
You want to make sure thatconditions that you treat are
highlighted on the homepage, that it's very easy for somebody
to book an appointment with youand that you have testimonials.
This will give proof to newwebsite visitors that you have
treated people for exactly whatthey're suffering from.
(09:59):
You want to include a servicespage, a conditions page, contact
page, privacy policy or termsof use page, an about page, a
book and appointment page, andthen, as you continue to grow
(10:19):
out your website, you might alsowant to later include a
resources page that hasinformation about first visits,
paperwork.
You might want to include avideo library.
Later on you might want tostart blogging.
So if you just open up thatGoogle Doc that we talked about
before, you can start to kind ofjust bullet, point out the
(10:42):
pages that you need yourhomepage services, conditions,
privacy policy, contact aboutand any other resources and then
start to add the content thatyou want to include on your
website in the Google Doc so youcan see where you're missing
(11:02):
elements and what needs to bebuilt out.
We have a really great resource, which is the five secrets to
owning the first page of Googlewithout spending a dollar on ads
.
That is a free training that Iput together.
You can visitpropellyourcompanycom, forward
(11:23):
slash.
Learn to sign up for that.
On that training, we go throughsome amazing SEO tips and we
walk through more of the contentof what you should include on
your website to make sure thatyou're showing up on the
almighty Google as you'reputting together this
(11:43):
information on your Google.
To make sure that you'reshowing up on the almighty
Google as you're puttingtogether this information on
your Google Doc.
You know you can later buildout specific conditions and
specific services.
So if you treat let's sayyou're a chiropractor and some
of the most common conditionsyou treat are back pain, neck
(12:04):
pain, sports injuries thesemight be pages that later you
want to build out and build offof the conditions pages, but
when you're just getting startedyou don't want to feel
overwhelmed, so you can just puttogether a general services and
a general conditions page andthen later go in and build out
(12:27):
specific services pages andspecific conditions pages On our
website, propellyourcompanycom.
We have tons of resources tohelp you with this.
If you go to the blog, you'llfind an article that we wrote
about what to include on anabout page, what to include on a
contact page, what to includein general on your website if
(12:52):
you're a clinic owner orchiropractor, to help you really
build out the content that youneed to have on your website.
So once you've put together yourGoogle Doc that has your pages
outlined and you know whatcontent you're going to want to,
what text you're going to wantto put on these pages, then you
(13:13):
can start to decide.
Okay, what images do I need toinclude with these pages?
For images, if you're going touse stock photography, I suggest
a website calleddepositstockphotoscom.
We'll include that link in theshow notes as well.
If you decide to use stockphotography and you go to do a
(13:38):
search on the stock photography, don't use the most popular
images, because people havealready seen those over and over
and over again.
So make sure that you're usingimages that do look a little
unique and that the images matchthe pages.
For instance, if you're doing aback page, then you should have
(14:00):
pictures of back pain on there.
If you want to step up yourgame, try to include as many
real photos as possible.
We did a really popular podcaston how to plan for your first
or next photo shoot.
(14:20):
You can find that by going topropellyourcompanycom as well.
We'll also include the link tothat in the show notes.
You're going to want to gatheryour testimonials from Google
and other sources and decidewhere those should go throughout
your website as well.
I don't necessarily suggest apage that says reviews or
(14:44):
testimonials.
I like to see testimonialssprinkled throughout the website
like confetti, and I like themto correlate with the content of
the page that they're on.
So, for instance, going to thechiropractor example, if you
were doing a back pain page, then it would be ideal for a
back pain testimonial to be onthat page While you're still
(15:07):
gathering the ingredients forthe recipe we call your first
website.
You also want to consider videos.
Now there are a ton of videosout there on YouTube.
I'm not suggesting that you usevideos for the sake of using
videos.
We've seen a lot of clinicowners do that, where they grab
a generic video and embed it ontheir website because they hear
(15:31):
videos help with SEO, searchengine optimization and they
help with website performance.
What you want to consider hereis that the video needs to
represent your, yourorganization.
So I don't necessarilyrecommend that you use some of
the standard canned videos thatyou can find on YouTube.
(15:54):
Instead that you add yourvideos as you put them together,
you want to upload those toYouTube and then embed them from
YouTube to your website.
You'll also want to add socialmedia links.
I suggest that you add yoursocial media links down at the
(16:15):
bottom in the footer of yourwebsite.
What happens is, if you putthem up at the top, which some
people do, as soon as somebodylands on your website, if
they're interested in checkingout your social media, they're
going to click and be gone.
So I like to have them lowerdown on the website so that
they're not a little what Iwould call a distraction,
(16:36):
because if somebody comes toyour website, it almost means
that they're either ready totake action or that they're
looking for more information tohelp them decide to take action,
like book an appointment withyou, and at that time you don't
necessarily want to distractthem by sending them to your
social media.
So once you've gathered all ofyour ingredients, now you're
(16:58):
ready to actually add them toyour website, and that's kind of
fun, right?
Your website gets to be anextension of your company If you
are going the DIY route ofbuilding out your website or you
