What happened to Home Ec? It used to be a mandatory part of our education, and while the class has seemingly disappeared the need for the skills has not.
Parents have to find new ways to impart crucial life skills such as cooking, budgeting, home maintenance, and work etiquette to teens who would rather order DoorDash.
As education systems shifted focus away from well-rounded curriculums and focused on standardized testing results and STEM fields, courses like Home Ec were sidelined. The practicality of Home Ec in real-life contexts and its role in shaping independent, well-rounded adults is sorely missed.
Rather than skip teaching teens these skills, we started looking for "Home Ec Moments." Basically opportunities to teach kids important life skills without them feeling like they are learning! We are all trying to raise good humans, and making sure our kids have the skills needed to be independent and contributing members of society is a big part of that!
In this episode, I share what "Home Ec Moments" are, and how I am going to share what worked for us with you! Every kid is different, every family is different, but we can all use the help, support, and someone to laugh with while we raise kids in this crazy time. I think it's going to be a lot of fun, and I hope you will join us!
"Home Ec Moment" videos will be shared on social channels and YouTube, and I can't wait to hear what you think and what skills you think teens need to learn.
