Thank you.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
It's Thursday, the twelfth of June. Here's what's making headlines
this evening.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
The US Defense Department has announced its reviewing ORCUS, a
submarine deal between Australia, the UK and the US. ORCUS
was first announced in twenty twenty one, but the Pentagon
has confirmed it's now reviewing the Defense Pact to ensure
it is quote aligned with President Trump's America First Agenda.
Federal Defense Minister Richard Miles has brushed off concerns about

(00:41):
the deal's future, saying it has widespread support. Shadow Defense
Minister Angus Taylor has urged the government to seek a
direct meeting with Trump to safeguard ORCUS. It comes ahead
of a World Leader's summit in Canada next week, where
Prime Minister Anthony Alberizi is expected to meet with Trump.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
The Fairwork Onbirdsman has found Griffith University underpaid thousands of
staff by eight point three million dollars. A report from
the National Workplace Regulator out today shows the Southeast Queensland
based UNI underpaid around five and a half thousand employees
between twenty fifteen and twenty twenty four. The underpayments have
been blamed on insufficient or non existent payroll and data processes,

(01:22):
fairwork Onbirdsman and Abooth credited Griffith University for acknowledging its
breaches and implementing measures to fully reimburse impacted staff. The
UNI has also pledged to pay any interest accrued on
outstanding staff payments.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Donald Trump says the US has reached a quote great
deal with China following trade talks with his counterpart, President
Chijing Ping. The two countries have been in an escalating
trade war over recent months, which saw Trump threaten tariffs
of up to one hundred and forty five percent on
Chinese imports. Following trade talks between officials from Washington and
Beijing this week, the White House said it will implement

(02:00):
a fixed tariff rate of fifty five percent on Chinese imports.
While limited details about their meeting have been released, Trump
and she also discussed a rare earth minerals deal which
would remove restrictions on some Chinese exports. In a statement
to Trump's Truth social platform, he said the US China
relationship is quote excellent, he told reporters on Wednesday night.

(02:22):
We made a great deal with China. We're very happy
with it and we're going to do very well with it,
and hopefully they are too.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
And today's good news, the discovery of a new dinosaur
species has shifted scientists understanding of the evolution of the
t rex. Researchers made the finding while analyzing a dinosaur
collection from a Mongolian museum. Paleontologists concluded that two of
the skeletons they'd studied were from previously unknown dinosaur species
thought to be the Tyrannosaurus's closest relative. Findings published in

(02:54):
the journal Nature, estimate the fossils are over eighty six
million years old. Researchers said the species shows how their
ancestors evolved from small dinosaurs into large apex predators, rewriting
the evolutionary history of tyrannosaurs.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
