Sometimes I write stuff.
Come with me, together let'sexplore this crazy experience we
(00:24):
call l ife.
Welcome to the show.
Hello everybody.
Welcome to Episode 30 (00:33):
Does God
have your attention?
In 1 Kings 19, God gets Elijah'sattention.
Elijah runs from persecution.
He was being pursued by the evilqueen Jezebel, and he runs all
(00:58):
the way to Horeb, the mountainof God, which was a 40-day walk.
He entered a cave and he hid.
And the Bible tells us that Godsaid to him suddenly,"What are
you doing here, Elijah?" Elijahdefends himself.
(01:22):
He says,"I've been very zealousfor you, but now everyone is
dead, but me and they want tokill me too." Now that wasn't
completely true, but God tellshim,"Go out, stand on the
mountain in the Lord'spresence." And the Bible says
(01:45):
that at that moment, the Lordpassed by.
A mighty wind came with theLord.
It tore at the mountain.
It shattered the cliffs, but theLord was not in the wind.
Then an earthquake came.
Must have shaken him up prettygood, but he recognized that God
(02:08):
wasn't in the earthquake either.
Then a fire burned, but the Lordwasn't in the fire.
But then...Elijah heard awhisper of a voice and he
immediately knew it to be thevoice of his God.
(02:31):
He wrapped his face in hismantle and stepped outside the
cave in reverence.
And what does God do?
Interestingly, he asks Elijahthe very same question:"What are
you doing here, Elijah?" This iswhere you have to love the
(02:55):
tenaciousness of Elijah.
I do.
Even though the prophet had seenthe power of God and heard the
voice of God, he was still humanand he was still so blinded by
his grief.
He had seen God's altars torndown and I can easily imagine
(03:17):
that at least some of theprophets whom Jezebel killed had
been his friends, or at leastco-laborers in God's work,
fellow priests serving the Lordtogether and now they were dead.
And in his grief Elijah's answerremains the same:"I have been
(03:39):
very zealous for the Lord, Godof Armies, but the Israelites
have abandoned your covenant, torn down your altars and killed
your prophets with the sword.
I alone am left and they arelooking for me to take my life."
What Elijah didn't realize wasthat he couldn't see the whole
(04:02):
picture.
And God still had a job for himto do.
Elijah was to go back into thefray and set the stage for
victory.
He was to anoint new leaders whowould be sent to bring justice
and to train a new prophet whowould eventually take his place
(04:26):
when God called Elijah toheaven.
Where are you today?
Do you feel as if you alone areleft in your community to hold
up a godly standard?
There was one more bit of newsthat God had for Elijah.
(04:48):
There were still 7,000 peoplewho had not bowed to or
worshiped Baal.
Similar to Elijah, today youmight feel alone, but know that
God has his eye on you.
And he wants you to know thatyou aren't alone.
(05:10):
He knows where you are.
He knows where the survivors arewho have not bowed to the God of
this age, those who have stayedtrue to him.
And God will rally his peopletogether.
True justice will prevail andgodliness will win in the end.
(05:33):
Like Elijah, we all have a jobto do.
That's why we're still here.
We need to go back into the frayand keep up the fight to hold
the standard of holiness high.
This reminds me of the wordsthat were spoken to Joshua, as
he was preparing to enter thepromised land:"Be strong and
(05:57):
courageous.
Do not be afraid; do not bediscouraged, for the Lord your
God will be with you whereveryou go." Those words, spoken
thousands of years ago, are justas true for us today as they
were when spoken to Joshua.
(06:20):
So be tough.
Be strong.
My friend, we have work to do.
