SPEAKER_04 (00:00):
Welcome

SPEAKER_08 (00:07):
to the Double R Show, the podcast that features
everything about North LincolnCounty.
The Double R Show directed andproduced by Paul Robertson and
hosted by the voice of LincolnCity, Roger Robertson.

SPEAKER_10 (00:30):
Thank you, Johnny.
Welcome to the Double R Show.
And Paul, this week we're goingto be talking about Taft High
School and the sports programsin particular.

SPEAKER_03 (00:39):
Yeah, for the fall season, we've got some folks
talking about the football andsome soccer and volleyball.
And if we're fast enough, wemight even catch that
cross-country team, but I'm notso sure we'll be able to.

SPEAKER_10 (00:52):
But it is football both kinds.

SPEAKER_03 (00:54):
Yeah, yeah, the soccer for those Americans now,
call it soccer, but yeah, thefooty, you bet.

SPEAKER_10 (01:00):
The football of both kinds, we'll talk about that and
a whole lot more.
We have some interviews with thecoaches.
And these guys and gals arereally high on being with the
students, the athletes.

SPEAKER_03 (01:14):
It makes a big difference to have a good coach
in your life.
And so, you know, we're thankfulfor these individuals that are
working with kids today and itmakes a big difference for the
future.

SPEAKER_10 (01:23):
Stay tuned.
Listen to what's coming at youfrom Taft High School with Paul.
I'm Double R.
More in a moment.

SPEAKER_05 (01:30):
We may be young, but we are experienced.
Hi, Adina Zeller here, andZeller's restaurants are now a
year old, but the experience inpreparing and serving food goes
way back generations.
Zeller's Lincoln City and RoseLodge.
Come on in.

SPEAKER_10 (01:45):
Football, Taft High style.
Jake Tolan, head coach, is withus.
How many young men do you haveout this year?

SPEAKER_04 (01:52):
Currently, right now, I think I have about 55
signed up.
As you just saw, there's acouple still going through the
registration process.
So our first day of practice, wehad 44, 45 kids cleared, which
is tremendous for the first day.
Kids got to get registered, andthere's a couple of things and
tasks that they have to getaccomplished.
I mean, in the past, high schoolboys tend to be a little

(02:14):
irresponsible and wait to thelast minute.
So, you know, inevitably we're,you know, starting practice with
30, 35, but like I saidyesterday, we had 45, and we're
still waiting for about probably10 or 15 more kids.
So, you know, ultimately Iexpect somewhere around 60 kids
this year, which is the biggestturnout I've had in the eight
years I've been the head coach.

(02:34):
So a lot of young freshmencoming in, almost 20 freshmen,
which is tremendous numbers forincoming freshman class.
So, yeah, there's a lot ofexcitement going around with the
numbers and And what we have atpractice as far as servicing
ourselves with a lot of depthand a lot of competition for
position.
So yeah, so far it's been agreat first day.

SPEAKER_10 (02:54):
With that many young players coming out, will you be
doing JV as well?

SPEAKER_04 (02:58):
Yeah, yeah.
We have a full JV schedule.
JV has nine games, I believe, same as varsity.
You know, with our league beinga 3A league, sometimes we have a
hard time scheduling JV gameswith league opponents.
So I know our athleticdirector's done a good job.
He's kind of gone out outsideour league just to make sure
that our JV team has a fullschedule.

(03:19):
So I think week one or week twofor JVs, we play one of the
Eugene schools, which is alarger school.
But as I said, I would rathergive my younger kids a game and
competition as opposed to justnot playing that week.
So we've had to go outside justto make sure that they've had a
full schedule.
But yeah, we'll have plenty forthe JV roster.

SPEAKER_10 (03:38):
Knowing coaches all over, obviously you talk amongst
yourselves.
What are you hearing from theother teams within the league?

SPEAKER_04 (03:46):
Within the league, yeah, it's a very competitive
league.
We had three of our teams makeplayoffs last year.
Dayton was a solid team that Ibelieve made it to the
semifinals and lost a closegame.
So, you know, league year in andyear out is dependent on which
teams graduate kids, you know.
I know some of those top teamsin our league graduated quite a
few kids.
We were somewhere in the middlelast year at four and five

(04:09):
record.
You know, we lost a couple ofclose games early on in the
year, middle of the season.
So our season could easily beena 6-3 season, but we graduated
four players and we'rereturning, I think we'll have
probably 12 or 13 seniors thisyear.
So it's a lot of fluctuatingbased off of who graduated who
and what positions they'retrying to fill.

(04:30):
We lost two teams.
Jefferson moved down to 2A,Salem Academy dropped to 2A, and
then Willamine and BlanchettCatholic filled those spots.
Not a lot we know about thosetwo teams.
So like I said, there's a lot ofunknown going into league this
year.
I think some teams like us Ifeel like we've gotten better
where some other teams maybetook a step backwards because of

(04:50):
graduating seniors.
What do you got going on in thebackfield?
You know talking to my coachesyesterday in the previous couple
of days that's kind of the mostexciting position right now
we've got four or five legittype starter kids all competing
for one or two positions so yeahyou know that that competition
breeds you know growth andimprovement and I don't know

(05:11):
right now you know I told thekids yesterday like you know if
you want to step up and show thecoaches that, you know, you want
the position that it's kind ofon you to kind of do that in
practice.
So I would say, you know, confidently, I have probably
four or five kids that, youknow, could challenge each other
for that starting running backposition.

SPEAKER_10 (05:31):
And defensively

SPEAKER_04 (05:32):
strong?
Very strong, a lot of depth, alot of skill, a lot of speed,
not a lot of positions that wehave, you know, kind of an
unknown.
Got a lot of depth.
And again, defensively, again, you should see a team that's on
the field that's physical andfast.
And I think defensively, we werepretty solid last year.
But we relied on three or foursophomores to kind of fill some

(05:56):
spots last year.
And we're returning those.
And they've matured and gottenphysical and worked harder over
the offseason.
So yeah, our defense is going tobe fast and physical and flying
around.
And it should be a huge strengthof our team this year.

SPEAKER_10 (06:09):
You find a lot of your players, you in the weight
room?

SPEAKER_04 (06:12):
Yeah, as a matter of fact, we had a weight room
session this morning at 10 a.m.
We had about 16 kids in there, which is a good number.
Working hard, I think, you know, over the course of the summer,
we've been able to add two andthree kids here and there
because, you know, the proof isin the product and the kids that
have showed up every day in theweight room camp we had last
week and practice yesterday, youcan tell, you know, those kids

(06:34):
have definitely kind of taken astep ahead of their teammates as
far as physicality andathleticism just based off of
the work they've done the lasttwo months in the weight room so
this morning was great we haveanother couple two more morning
sessions on Thursday and Fridayand then unfortunately summer
summer waits are over and sowe'll have to wait till school
starts.

SPEAKER_10 (06:53):
So you open the season against who and when is
the first home game?

SPEAKER_04 (06:57):
Yeah we open up the season home against Cresswell I
believe that is September 6thhere at home we played them
first week last year over downin Cresswell it was a close game
it's definitely a game we feltlike we gave away it was easily
Probably our worst game of theseason.
It was hot.
No excuses.
We didn't perform very well inweek one.

(07:19):
And yeah, we're looking to, youknow, get after them on
September 6th.
Certainly that was a game.
Losing that game last year hurtour RPI.
And as I said, that was one ofthose losses we felt we should
have won.
That would have been a betterresult in our season last year.
So we're excited about theopportunity to play them again
up here.
Hoping to look to get on theright track with a win in our

(07:40):
opener.

SPEAKER_10 (07:41):
Coach, Coach Tolan, good luck, and we look forward
to talking to you about somewonderful wins this

SPEAKER_04 (07:47):
year.
Yeah, yeah, I appreciate theopportunity to share some things
with you anytime.
Like I said, we're reallyexcited about the season this
year.
Good numbers, a lot of greatathletes out.
We expect a great year for TaftHigh School.

SPEAKER_01 (07:59):

take our word for it.
Read the reviews.
One person wrote, the servicewas friendly and efficient.
Another writes, La Roca hasbecome one of our favorites
because it's authentic Mexicanfood.

SPEAKER_10 (09:02):
Girls soccer getting stronger.
With us is coach Justin James.
And tell me about the soccerprogram at Taft High

SPEAKER_02 (09:10):
School.

SPEAKER_10 (09:10):
Well, this

SPEAKER_02 (09:11):
year we're kind of just getting, we got about six
freshmen, I believe.
So we'll see how we do thisyear.
And I think it's going to be agreat year this year.
Why is that?
We have returning seniors,Sienna Lilbo, Jackie, Cortez,
and who else we got?
Savannah.

SPEAKER_12 (09:30):
Yeah, I think this year for sure the returning
seniors and juniors are comingin.
But for sure this year I feellike it's going to be more
tactical than anything, morepassing, more moving than
anything than last year.
We're trying to cut the habit ofother programs that we used to
not coach but be a part of.
And we're just trying to moveforward and be more– up to the

(09:53):
standards of other teams as wellso we can compete with them.

SPEAKER_10 (09:56):
We're standing on the soccer field, the football
field.
What is it like to play on thisbrand-new turf?
Oh,

SPEAKER_02 (10:03):
it's

SPEAKER_10 (10:03):
amazing.

SPEAKER_02 (10:03):
It's perfect now.
Before, it was almost likeconcrete.
So it was amazing.
Thanks to whoever got it for us.
I mean, it's great.
And then how

SPEAKER_10 (10:16):
much of the football field would you use for soccer
games?

SPEAKER_12 (10:19):
We would use mostly all of it.
We are longer and wider than anactual football field.
I would say another five yardsout and maybe even another 15,
20 yards back, I would say.
So it's quite a few running andsprinting more often than stop
play and then get your breathgoing.

(10:41):
It's more quick play.

SPEAKER_10 (10:42):
What motivates these young ladies to come out for
soccer?

SPEAKER_02 (10:46):
I believe just competition and family
atmosphere.
We're trying to teach more of alifestyle than wins or losses,
really.
I mean, we're just trying to getthem to grow up more.

SPEAKER_10 (10:58):
What's your long suit as far as defense

SPEAKER_02 (11:01):
and offense?
Defensively, that is our maingoal is defense.
And then we got a couplestrikers up front that should be
able to get us a couple pointsand then hold them off.

SPEAKER_10 (11:12):
All right, your season opens when?
I

SPEAKER_12 (11:16):
believe September 5th, September 5th.
Jamboree on this Thursday on the28th, correct?
We're playing three teamsthroughout the day.
It's a 30-minute matches, Ibelieve.
So we're trying to just see whatwe got during the game and see
how we feel with players beingat certain spots they never
played before.

SPEAKER_10 (11:35):
Okay, two coaches, what is your background in
soccer?

SPEAKER_02 (11:39):
So I coach the high school soccer team, boys soccer
team, I think from 2013 to 18, Ithink.
And then I coached actuallySammy, he was on my team.
And then I played soccer allthrough my high school career.

SPEAKER_12 (11:53):
Sammy, how about you?
I played since I was five, andthen I played from five to, I
believe, 10 years old, and thenI dropped out a little bit out
of soccer to some family eventsthat went on in my life, and
then I jumped back into itmiddle school and going into
high school, and I was one ofthe student athletes for Justin.
It was amazing.
Him and I had the same visionfor girls' soccer, so it's

(12:14):
awesome.

SPEAKER_10 (12:16):
It is interesting to me you've got a woman that is
coaching the boys and a coupleof guys You guys are coaching
the girls.
Tell me about that.

SPEAKER_02 (12:26):
Yeah, just, well, Maggie Chapman, I know her a
little bit, and I think she'sgoing to do great with the boys'
soccer.
And I just stepped in when, Ithink it was Joey.
Yeah, he left, so I just,Lillibow wanted me to come
coach, and I've coached before, like I said, the boys' soccer
team.

(12:47):
So I just started about threeyears ago with the girls, and I
love it.
I just love coaching in general, you know,

SPEAKER_10 (12:52):
working.
What does the league look like,Sammy, that you'll be playing
in?

SPEAKER_12 (12:58):
It looks pretty intense, I would say.
We have some Albany andSheridan.
We have Yamhill Carlton, and allthose girls have been playing
since, I don't know, since theycan walk, I would say, because I
know most of those girls, andI've been in Salem, I've been in
McMinnville, and they playtravel, they play league, play
Monday through Friday.
They're always, always, alwaysplaying soccer.

(13:20):
They don't do another sport.
So it's very tough when you getpeople that have been playing
all their life for

SPEAKER_10 (13:26):
sure.
And we will see some of themyoung ladies here as well,
correct?

SPEAKER_12 (13:30):
Correct.
Yeah, we'll see some talent outhere.

SPEAKER_10 (13:33):
I know you've got some girls that are looking at
this as a potential way to getsome scholarship money in
playing sports at another level,right?

SPEAKER_02 (13:42):
Indeed, yes.
We got a couple seniors, SiennaLillibow, Savannah Fernandez,
and I'm not sure if Jackie wantsto move her career on to soccer,
but but she's another seniorthat's definitely going to step
it up this year.
And, yeah, both Sienna andSavannah are definitely going to
have some options, I guaranteeit, after this year with soccer.

SPEAKER_10 (14:05):
How do the coaches get involved in helping those
young ladies benefit from– As

SPEAKER_02 (14:12):
much as I can.
I mean, if I get askedquestions, I'll definitely sell
them, you know.
Heck, yeah.
Anything else on the soccerprogram the listeners need to
know about?
Just come out and support thegirls and look for just a great
season.
It should be fun, real fun.
I mean,

SPEAKER_10 (14:29):
Justin, again, the brand new turf is something to
play on.
It's something to stand on.

SPEAKER_12 (14:38):
Absolutely.
I know their last turf was veryhard, like concrete and the
ball.
It felt like fast turf.
So if you ever played soccer, there's the foot saw and there's
soccer for the outside.
And it felt like foot sawbecause our old turf, the ball
went faster and And this newturf feels like actual grass.
It slows the ball down.
Every one it bounces, it staysin place and doesn't move

(14:59):
anywhere.
So it's for sure going to feel adifferent feeling for the girls
as well.

SPEAKER_08 (15:03):
Northwest Septic Service is your one-stop shop
for all your septic needs.

SPEAKER_10 (15:07):

SPEAKER_07 (15:15):

Northwest Septic Service caninspect your sewer line or an
entire septic system.

SPEAKER_08 (15:21):
Old or failing septic systems?
Northwest Septic Service canrejuvenate most drain fields,
saving you thousands of dollars.
541-994-6977.
Serving

SPEAKER_10 (15:30):
Lincoln, Tillamook and Yamhill Counties, Northwest
Septic Service.
Known as the community centerfor years as Coach Boone Marker,
now known as Coach Boone Markerup at Taft High School.
Coach, you made a switch.

SPEAKER_11 (15:44):
Yeah, I'm happy to be named the new varsity head
coach here at Taft High School.

SPEAKER_10 (15:49):
To become a head coach of a varsity volleyball
team, you do what?

SPEAKER_11 (15:54):
Well, I've got over 20 years of volleyball
experience.
And when I started here inLincoln City, I remember the
fall of 2016, I kind of came uphere.
I was like, hey, how can I help?
And that's kind of where Istarted kind of the rebuilding
of the youth volleyball programwhere all the girls on the court
tonight started.

SPEAKER_10 (16:11):
You started with those girls when they were 5, 6,
7, 8 years old?

SPEAKER_11 (16:16):
More like 8, 9, the seniors.
who are in here tonight.
They were, I think, like fifthor sixth grade, but a lot of the
freshmen and sophomores that yousee were eight years old when we
started.

SPEAKER_10 (16:27):
Now, you got some rather ambitious goals for these
young ladies, don't you?

SPEAKER_11 (16:31):
Absolutely.
You know, as a first-time headcoach in the new season, you
know, my minimum goal is to be500, so win half of our games
and do what we can to be playoffeligible.

SPEAKER_10 (16:41):
And let's talk about eligibility.
Who else is involved in theleague?

SPEAKER_11 (16:45):
So we've got a variety of teams.
We've got Wilhelmina, Dayton,Blanchette, Amity.
Saniam Christian, SIO,Jefferson, and name a few.
And you've got to be in the topfive at the end of league to go
into the league tournament.
And the top three teams who comeout of that advance to the first
round of the state playoffs.

SPEAKER_10 (17:04):
Now, so people get a little perspective of the team
that you have or the youngladies that you have.
Your opening run with the fourteams from the county, you win
this.

SPEAKER_11 (17:15):
Yeah, you know, Lincoln County, kind of jamboree
where we play Waldport, Newport, and Toledo.
You know, one set to 25 againsteach team, and we came out
victorious in all three, whichis a nice feeling to start the
season.

SPEAKER_10 (17:27):
What's the attitude of the young ladies?

SPEAKER_11 (17:28):
They're ambitious.
They really want to learn how towin and do what they can.
They've got a great class ofjuniors and sophomores and a few
seniors that are still on theroster, and I think this could
be a turning point for theTigers this year.

SPEAKER_10 (17:43):
Volleyball, I should look for what?

SPEAKER_11 (17:46):
Fast-paced movement, you know, smart volleyball
playing, you know.
team that typically works thehardest on the court is often
the most victorious.
And so I really coach my kids towork hard and have the greatest
attitude of anybody else on thecourt.

SPEAKER_10 (18:01):
I would have to think there's a lot more
interest in volleyball with theOlympics just getting over.

SPEAKER_11 (18:05):
We haven't talked a lot about Olympics.
We are really focused on collegevolleyball.
That game has grown so much inthe eyes of America, I would
say, with just Nebraska fillingstands of a football field to
watch a highlight and just youknow that's the closest reality
the next step for these girls ifthey choose to are able to move

(18:28):
on to the next level is thathigh paced you know perfect
passing perfect settingexecuting on your hits playing
great defense and just being amop on the floor.

SPEAKER_10 (18:37):
What kind of experience do most of these
young ladies have?

SPEAKER_11 (18:40):
Almost all the girls on the team this year have you
know a few years of high schoolyou know all their youth stuff
but a lot of them play in a clubseason that lasts about six
months once as well.
We pretty much play fromDecember into late May and
travel around playingtournaments against other girls
across the state.
That's a lot of commitment.

(19:01):
It is a lot of commitment.
You know, to play at a highlevel, you've got to be
committed.

SPEAKER_10 (19:06):
And to play at a high level.
what do you have to be able tocoach him to do?

SPEAKER_11 (19:11):
I take, you know, our game films and see where
exactly we need to work on.
That's one big thing isevaluating the small things and
inconsistencies that we mighthave during a game and
developing strong practice plansto develop that skill so that,
you know, we're more efficientmoving forward.

SPEAKER_10 (19:28):
Obviously, you're looking to win any match that
you play, but is there one matchin that league that Boone Marker
says, I got to win this one?

SPEAKER_11 (19:37):
You know, I would say...
Saniam Christian, they've beenone of the most dominant teams
in our conference.
And we often see them at thestate finals.
And so for us to last year, theywon a set.
out of, you know, two matches.
And I think if we can becompetitive with them late in
the season, then we could findourselves in a good spot to

(19:57):
finish out league and hopefullymake ourselves in the first
round of state playoffs, whichis something that we as a school
have not done for a long time.

SPEAKER_10 (20:04):
Tell me about some of the young ladies kind of
experience that they're bringingto the court.

SPEAKER_11 (20:10):
Well, we are young in some sense.
We've got some freshmen andsophomores.
I brought on some freshmenbecause of their height and
their ability to learn and grow.
We've got very good junior andsenior leadership that I'm
really looking to expose, andI'm really trying to preach that
we are a sisterhood, we're afamily, and that you've got to
pick each other up and reallychange people's perspective on

(20:31):
TAF sports and remind them thateverybody watches women's
sports.

SPEAKER_10 (20:36):
And this is true.
This is really true anymore, especially when it comes to
basketball and volleyball.

SPEAKER_11 (20:43):
Yeah, I really hope that we can get a good crowd
turnout because volleyball is somomentous that if you've got a
good home crowd, you can reallyrattle the visiting team and
they're there to support you.
And that's what I need from ourTaft Tigers family base.

SPEAKER_10 (20:57):
So when the varsity is played, is there a JV squad
as well?

SPEAKER_11 (21:02):
Yeah, JV plays before varsity at all home
games.
So JVs will always be at fiveo'clock and varsity will start
after that, no earlier than6.30.

SPEAKER_10 (21:10):
One final note from Coach Boonmarker, the voice of
the Tigers as well.

SPEAKER_11 (21:15):
Come out, support our team.
Go Tigers!

SPEAKER_09 (21:20):
In Oregon, there are 30 state senators, and we are
lucky to have Senator DickAnderson on the coast standing
up for our voices in Salem.
Senator Anderson has been calledthe most effective senator in
Salem.
He has passed landmark housingand homeless legislation, funded
police, criminalized hard drugsagain, stood up for local school
boards, and has sent over$100million in investments back to

(21:41):
coastal communities for housing, mental health, health care, and
infrastructure investments.
Being effective only matters ifit works.
This is why he has been endorsedby nearly every mayor in his
district.
Senator Anderson is local.
He understands how the small, rural communities struggle to
keep law enforcement and firefunded, attract jobs, and build
more housing.

(22:02):
There is more work to be done.
This is why Senator Anderson isrunning for re-election asking
for your vote.
Please go to SenatorAnderson.comand volunteer a yard sign
location.
Volunteer or even donate.
Senator Dick Anderson.
Leadership that works.
Paid for by Anderson for Oregon.
Pack number 20255.

SPEAKER_10 (22:21):
Well, before we get out of here today, I'd like to
talk about the Senior Fair.
This is the 31st annual SeniorFair up at Chinook Winds Casino
Resort.
It is Tuesday, 9 to 4.
31 years, Paul,

SPEAKER_03 (22:36):
31.
It's impressive.
You know, that's been a bigfamily tradition for a lot of
years now.
And, you know, we've been up atChinook Winds for most of that
time.
And so people can come in earlyon Tuesday morning and start
going through some booths,right?

SPEAKER_10 (22:50):
9 o'clock.
Tuesday morning.
We have over 40, or check that,50 vendors that you can go up,
talk to.
Vendors from Samaritan NorthLincoln Hospital are really the
mainstay.
We have a number of other boothsfrom Moe's Clam Chowder.
