Look, there's a parade a-comin'.
With me is Warren Ryland, andWarren, you are helping
orchestrate a parade inbeautiful downtown Glen Eden
Beach.
Oh, that's right.
We've been on a four-year hiatussince COVID, and we're trying to
put it back together, and it'scoming along wonderfully.

(01:48):
You got a lot of people alreadyinvolved?
Yes, we've got a staff of about12, and that's building up each
day.
We've got about 48 so far forthe parade itself, and we have
three bands playing.
In the parade or on the sidebar?
Oh, afterwards.
We'll have a little music goingon when the There isn't a

(02:10):
marching band or something likethat, which we believe we're
going to have two or three ofthose.
I assume that this parade isgoing to be akin to what we
enjoyed before.
Yes, yeah.
We're following the model thatthe parade has used for 25
years.
So, you know, it should bewonderful.
It's been a struggle becausewe're kind of almost having to

(02:34):
do it from the ground up again.
It's Americana at the best.
American stand up and salute theflag and have a good time.
Mom, dad, all the kids, grandma, grandpa, everybody's welcome to
be there.
Oh yeah, yeah.
And we've got food vendors, youknow, shops that are, you know,

(02:54):
setting up their little boothsand, you know, we're coming up
with things for the kids to do,and live music.
Once the parade's over, we'regoing to close off one block and
keep it going as a block party.
Keep the party going.
So who will be performing foryou and everybody else?
King Tide, with Greg Nugent, will be headlining the show, and

(03:18):
he'll also, in the middle, bedoing an acoustic duo to be a
little lighter in themid-afternoon.
And we're going to start it offwith Box and Buck duo, which is
kind of a jug bluegrass band.
What fun.
And then in the parade, let'stalk about the parade.
You said you had 40-some entriesalready.
What kind of entries do youalready have in the parade?

(03:39):
Well, it'll start off with theU.S.
Coast Guard Honor Guard.
Good.
And Brett Luchick hasvolunteered to play trumpet, you
know, the Star Spangled Banner.
In the parade as well?
In the parade as well.
The Honor Guard will come up toabout the stage area and stop
and then go to you know, attention, and then, you know,

(04:05):
presenting colors.
And then Brett will, you know, play the Star Spangled Banner,
and, you know, then the paradewill proceed on.
He does a wonderful job of it.
Oh, yeah, yeah, a wonderfulmusician.
It wouldn't matter whatinstrument I need, the guy, you
know, can play it, yeah.
Okay, so you've got Brunt, theCoast Guard, and who else?

(04:28):
Oh, we've got the three localfire departments, primarily
Depot Babings, they're in ourarea, and then the North Lincoln
and Newport fire departments aregoing to have some trucks.
We believe we're getting theLincoln County Sheriff's Posse,
which is a horse unit, andthey'll be there.

(04:48):
We'll have some other horsegroups.
A lot of families marching theparade.
Oh, yes, yeah.
Little kids on trikes and, youknow, all decorated it out and,
you know, a lot of classic cars, classic trucks and, you know,
newer hot rods and, you know, things of that nature.
Can people still get into theparade, register to be in the

(05:08):
parade?
Yes, you know, we'll takeregistration up to the day, you
know, unless, you know, it fillsup.
When you say fills up, you got acap as to the number of entries?
Well, you know, just like Isaid, we're starting up all over
again this year, so we don'twant it to get too big too fast.

(05:29):
And it's been impressive, theamount of attention we're
getting from it so far.
You start again from the firehall and go north, correct?
Right, yeah.
We go north.
Well, I can't remember the nameof the restaurant, but yeah, we
go pretty much all the way downGlen Eden.
We miss the last street so thatpeople that are living to the

(05:51):
west of it all still have a wayin and out.
Mm-hmm.
during the event.
Best to get there early.
Sure, yeah.
And bring your own foldingchairs and get there early, and
it fills up pretty fast, thegood seating.
Well, not only that, but itgives you plenty of time then to
go over to all of the exhibitbooths, the food booths, and

(06:11):
those type of things.
Sure.
Because I assume that they'llopen up way before the parade.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Most of them will be open by 11.
Parade starts at 1 p.m.
So now if somebody wants to getinto the parade, what do they
do?
They go to Glenny.
EdenParade.org and register.
We also, you know, sponsors ordonors can also sign up there.

(06:35):
We do charge for vendors.
Sure.
You know, for booth space, butpublic service group.
Non-profit or free.
And of course, to the generalpublic, entry is free to this
also.
What fun.
Look forward to it.
I'm going to miss it this timearound, but it is...
conjures up all sorts of goodmemories.

(06:56):
I congratulate and thank youguys for bringing it back.
Well, thank you.
Yeah, yeah, it's been a thrilldoing it.
We got a late start, you know, working hard to get it done, but
it's been a pleasure, you know,to do this.
The Fourth of July Parade, beautiful downtown Glen Eden
Beach.
Don't miss it.
Warren, thanks for coming in.

(07:17):
We appreciate it.
And if somebody wants to get ahold of you, how do they do
that?
They would do that at warren atglenedenparade.org.

SPEAKER_04 (07:26):
We may be young, but we are experienced.
Hi, Adina Zeller here, andZeller's restaurants are now a
year old, but the experience inpreparing and serving food goes
way back generations.
Zeller's Lincoln City in RoseLodge.
Come on in.

SPEAKER_12 (07:40):
If you're looking for great early garden fresh
produce, it's Kenny's IGA in theBay Area of Lincoln City.

of course, groceries.

SPEAKER_03 (07:55):
Bob's Speech Books in the Ocean Lake area of
Lincoln City does in fact havewhat you'll want to read.
I'm Diana Portwood, and if wehappen to be out of a particular
bestseller, in a day or two,we'll have it back in the store
waiting for you.
Bob's Speech Books, so you canjoin the conversation.

SPEAKER_12 (08:08):
Explore Lincoln City.
Kim Cooper-Finling is with usnext.
And Kim, you are the director ofExplore Lincoln City.
Name has changed over the courseof the years, but the mission
remains the same, does it not?

SPEAKER_05 (08:21):
Yes, we support all tourism outreach and promotion
and destination management forthe city of Lincoln City and
surrounds.

SPEAKER_12 (08:30):
That's a major task.

SPEAKER_05 (08:32):
It's a lot of fun.
I

SPEAKER_12 (08:34):
like that attitude.
It's a lot of fun.
I get that from a number of thepeople that work for you.
They enjoy what they do.

SPEAKER_05 (08:41):
That's great.
That's great to hear.
I think that tourism isdefinitely one of the more fun
areas to get to play and workin.

SPEAKER_12 (08:50):
Nuts and bolts, we're into a new budgetary year.
Any grandiose plans for thisyear, the new year?

SPEAKER_05 (08:58):
Well, our big plan has been the big plan for a
while, which is to get the DeeRiver Welcome Center built.
So that is still in the works.
We're still in negotiations withthe state, with OPRD.
to get the lease agreement inplace so that we can begin the
architectural plans for thewelcome center that will be the

(09:19):
highlight of the middle of townto welcome visitors and just
pretty up that whole beautiful DRiver site for the residents and
visitors.

SPEAKER_12 (09:28):
What makes that so important to the economic
stability of the town?

SPEAKER_05 (09:32):
I think that the D River wayside is kind of the
highlight of our town.
You know, you can't really missit if you're passing through.
Everyone's going to see it.
Same for locals.
So the opportunity to kind ofmake that Lincoln City's welcome
mat and living room, so tospeak, and to really put a
beautiful building there withsome nice interpretive services,

(09:54):
launch programming from it, andjust essentially provide all
visitors with information asthey're passing through or if
they're here for a while, maybethey'll choose to stay for
longer.
We have more information andprogramming to offer them that's
easily accessible.

SPEAKER_12 (10:09):
It just dawned on me, it was 50 years ago, the
very first place I saw thePacific Ocean was It was the Dee
River.

SPEAKER_05 (10:16):
Really?
Wow.
Yeah,

SPEAKER_12 (10:18):
so it's got a special place in my heart as
well.

SPEAKER_05 (10:23):
It's a beautiful location.
It really

SPEAKER_12 (10:25):
is.
Now, the budget for the newyear, the one item remains the
same, but I assume the glassfloats remain in place, correct?

SPEAKER_05 (10:35):
Absolutely.
In fact, 2025 will be our 25thyear of that program.
So we'll be doing some extra funthings around the Finders
Keepers program and the glassfloats next year.

SPEAKER_12 (10:47):
The glass floats have become synonymous with
Lincoln City.
Explore Lincoln City has poureda lot of money into that
campaign.

SPEAKER_05 (10:54):
Absolutely, yeah.
It's great because it not onlyattracts visitors and allows
them something really extra funand special to do when they're
here, but it also supports localclass artists.
So it's feeding that money backinto the economy and to our
artists here and shops too.

SPEAKER_12 (11:12):
Will you be doing any special events other than
the kite festivals?

SPEAKER_05 (11:16):
Well, we still have the events that we do every
year, including 4th of July, which is right around the corner
We'll be doing the firework forthe 4th this year as usual over
Solette's Bay.
We have live music and someother fun stuff going on down
there in Taft for the 4th.

SPEAKER_12 (11:32):
Now, that is a departure from where the Explore
Lincoln City first began becauseexpending money in the peak
season was something you neverused to do.

SPEAKER_05 (11:43):
That's true.
Yeah, we still do focus most ofour efforts on the shoulder
season and the winter season, but there's still some fun
things we do in the summer tosupport the folks that are here
and celebrate.
We also have the Fall KiteFestival will be in September
next.

SPEAKER_12 (12:00):
huge event

SPEAKER_05 (12:01):
yeah the fall fest has really grown it's such you
know it's so beautiful here inthe fall and there's not quite
as many visitors as in thesummer so it's a nice it's kind
of a little bit of a quietercadence that kite fest but this
year we have something specialhappening around the fall fest
which is that we are in theprocess of commissioning some

(12:21):
artists to paint a mural of thekite festival it's actually a
still from an animated videothat travel oregon created
several years ago one of theircampaigns was called oregon only
slightly exaggerated

SPEAKER_02 (12:35):
and

SPEAKER_05 (12:36):
it's these beautiful animations and there's an image
of the lincoln city kite fest inthat animation so we've captured
a still and in partnership withtravel oregon we're having that
mural created on the wall ofcity hall which is of course
also where our welcome centercurrently is and just what half
a mile to d river where thewelcome center will be and the

(12:59):
kite festival is So that muralwill be unveiled right around
the time of the Fall Kite Festas well.

SPEAKER_12 (13:05):
Now, advertising-wise, you've got a
new ad agency?

SPEAKER_05 (13:09):
Yes, we do.
We are partnering with DVAAdvertising beginning July 1.
City Council approved thatcontract just this week, and
we'll be moving into a newpartnership with this agency.
I'm really excited about it.
They're very much...
tourism centric.
They have a lot of tourismclients in the West.

(13:31):
It's really their area ofexpertise.
So I think it's going to be agreat opportunity to learn from
them and see what kind ofcreativity they can bring to our
amazing location and programs.

SPEAKER_12 (13:42):
You are a writer.

SPEAKER_05 (13:44):
Correct.

SPEAKER_12 (13:45):
And is there anything that you would like to
write about?
And if you're going to write thenovel of Lincoln City, it would
be what?

SPEAKER_05 (13:53):
Oh, that's a great question, Roger.
I mean, I've already written acouple of books that are about
or based on the Oregon coast.
My favorite of which is themystery that I wrote with my
daughter.
It's called The Sixth Storm, andit's based on the Oregon coast.
It's a mystery, a teen mystery.
And we started that project whenshe was 10.
It was published when she was14, and she's now 19.

(14:17):
And, of course, the question wealways get is, will there be a
sequel?

SPEAKER_12 (14:22):
Mm-hmm.

UNKNOWN (14:23):
And?

SPEAKER_05 (14:23):
Never say never.
She got a creative writingscholarship to college, so she's
still in the writing game.
I just need to pin her down withsome time.
She's kind of a busy girl.

SPEAKER_12 (14:37):
Kim, is there any other things that we need to
cover that you want to makecertain that the business
community knows about fromExplorer Lincoln City?

SPEAKER_05 (14:46):
One of the things that we did in this coming
budget year is we increased theamount available in our
Community Partnership Fund whichis a grant program that we offer
up every year.
The theme has sort of shiftedover the years, and right now
we're focusing on partnershipswith projects that are around
diversity, equity, inclusion,accessibility, or stewardship.

(15:10):
So a broad number of topics, butthose funds are available to
anyone who has a project thatfits into that criteria that's
also tourism-focused.
And the grant applications areon our website, on our industry
page.
We're finishing up this cycle.

SPEAKER_00 (15:28):
at the end

SPEAKER_05 (15:29):
of this month, and then we'll be launching the
24-25 cycle of the same grantprogram.
So take a look at thatapplication, all you people out
there doing amazing things, andsee if your project fits.

SPEAKER_09 (15:42):
If you're single and 50, nothing out there.
Like walking up on an avocadobin, there's like seven left.
Five are rotten, two aresuspect.
You just end up leaving with anonion.

SPEAKER_10 (15:53):
Rodney Carrington.
Two shows on Saturday, August3rd.
Chinook Winds Casino Resort.

SPEAKER_09 (15:59):
And any man that thinks he's going to run off and
find him some little30-something who's 50 years old,
good luck with that.
They're a lot of fun, buteventually you have to talk to
them.
That's when the breakdownbegins.
So what do you want to do withyour life?
Just travel.
Travel the world.
You work at Arby's, probablygoing to be a while.

SPEAKER_10 (16:15):
Tickets on sale now at chinookwins.com, Chinook Wins
box office, or at 188 Main Act,a night of comedy and music with
Rodney Carrington.

SPEAKER_09 (16:25):
I got crabs.

SPEAKER_10 (16:27):
I mean, it's real bad.
Not the kind you eat at Joe's,but they kind of make your
girlfriend mad.
Saturday, August 3rd, two shows,Chinook Wins Casino Resort,
Rodney Carrington, Chinook Wins, where concerts are better at the
beach.

SPEAKER_12 (16:42):
We are joined now by a teenager that we have had the
opportunity to interview before, but now she has another title.
Tess Pinelli-Sanquist is withus, and the new title is?

SPEAKER_07 (16:54):
Miss Tri-Valley's Teen.

SPEAKER_12 (16:56):
Now, last night you competed already in the Miss
Teen for Oregon.

SPEAKER_07 (17:01):
Yes, I did.
Or

SPEAKER_12 (17:02):
the beginning of it.

SPEAKER_07 (17:04):
Last night, I competed in my fitness and
evening gown portion ofcompetition.

SPEAKER_12 (17:08):
This is all up in Seaside, in the convention
center.
Were you nervous?

SPEAKER_07 (17:12):
I, you know, okay, these two are the most easiest
phases of competition for me.
So it was fun watching all theother girls get to compete in
the other two phases.
And so for this one, I kind ofwas a little more relaxed.

SPEAKER_12 (17:22):
A little more relaxed.
So what is ahead?
What happens tonight and as wego forward?

SPEAKER_07 (17:29):
So tonight, I compete on onstage conversation,
and then I compete in my talent.

SPEAKER_12 (17:34):
Onstage conversation, you are, in other
words, being interviewed.

SPEAKER_07 (17:38):
Pretty much.
So how it goes is I'll draw anumber out of a bowl, and I'll
tell them what the number is,and then they'll ask me a
question, and I have to answerin front of everybody in the
audience.

SPEAKER_12 (17:49):
And you have no idea what's coming out of that bowl,

SPEAKER_07 (17:51):
correct?
Not at all.
It's either going to besomething about Miss Oregon's
teen or my community serviceinitiative.

SPEAKER_12 (17:56):
And you have a very interesting background.
when it comes to communityservice, and it is very, very
deep.

SPEAKER_07 (18:03):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_12 (18:04):
It's not just going out and picking daisies.
Let's talk about it.

SPEAKER_07 (18:08):
So my community service initiative is I have
dyslexia, dyslexia does not haveme.
I got diagnosed in the fifthgrade with dyslexia, and I never
knew what it was.
I was just scared that I wouldget made fun of because...
I was different.
But joining this program hasmade me feel so amazing about
myself that now I'm proud totell people about dyslexia and I

(18:29):
want everyone to know about it.
And it's not something that getstalked about, so I'm here to
talk about it.

SPEAKER_12 (18:34):
So what's the biggest problem that you have to
overcome?

SPEAKER_07 (18:38):
I would say one of the biggest problems is a lot of
people get it like a stereotypeabout dyslexia.
Like a lot of people say, oh,you read backwards.
That's just not my type.
There's so many different typesof dyslexia.
They could be big or small.
One in five people have it.
And most people don't even knowthey have it until they're in
their adulthood.

SPEAKER_12 (18:55):
Really?

SPEAKER_07 (18:55):
Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_12 (18:57):
So what have you done to help mitigate it?

SPEAKER_07 (19:00):
So one of the things I've done is I'm partnered with
Decoding Dyslexia Organ Chapter.
I've gone to a lot of theirevents.
In October of last year, I wentto the Go-Med for Dyslexia
Night, and I just speak to kidswho have dyslexia, speak to
adults who...
don't know how to help kids.
And so that's one of the mainthings that I've overcome with
that going forward.

SPEAKER_12 (19:20):
Talking to the kids, they probably come up with some
of the more difficult questions,right?

SPEAKER_07 (19:25):
Yeah.
A lot of kids also ask me, whereare you from?
Because I have a speechimpediment because of my
dyslexia.
I get that almost every day, either at my job, somebody asks
me that, or anywhere.
And so that's a fun one, havingto explain, oh, I actually have
a speech impediment because ofdyslexia.

SPEAKER_12 (19:39):
Now the Miss Oregon teen, the winner of that gets
what?

SPEAKER_07 (19:43):
The winner of Miss Oregon's teen gets a quarter of
a million dollar scholarship toa college of her choice.

SPEAKER_12 (19:49):
Oh my.

SPEAKER_07 (19:50):
Yes, plus gets the opportunity to compete at Miss
America's teen.

SPEAKER_12 (19:55):
A quarter of a million dollars here in Oregon?

SPEAKER_07 (19:58):
It goes to whatever college of their choice, yes.
The program, Miss Americaprogram, is to help women
further their education in

SPEAKER_12 (20:05):
college.
Sure, sure.
What other...
prizes are there, if you will?
I think Miss Congeniality, isthere such a thing?

SPEAKER_07 (20:13):
Yes, so Miss Congeniality, they have one for
teens and Miss.
Really?
Yes, it's where your othercompetitors get to vote on who's
the nicest girl and who's beenthere to help everyone else and
who's the best role model.

SPEAKER_12 (20:24):
So Sandra Bullock is not going to show up in this
competition then?

SPEAKER_07 (20:28):
I do not believe so.

SPEAKER_12 (20:31):
When you go, will you be there competing at the
same time that Miss Oregon isunderway?

SPEAKER_07 (20:39):
So last year they actually split us up, and they
had teens separate from Miss, but this year we are back all in
Seaside at the same time.
So yeah, it's kind of a giantsisterhood.
I get to be with my Miss, MissTri-Valley, and it's going to be
so fun.

SPEAKER_12 (20:52):
You are excited about this, aren't you?
And should be.
And should

SPEAKER_07 (20:56):
be.
Yeah, this is my third yeargoing, and so I'm really
excited.

SPEAKER_12 (20:59):
Why?

SPEAKER_07 (21:00):
Since I've been homeschooled because of my
dyslexia, it's been hard for meto make friends my own age
because I just feel likeeveryone's going to judge me for
having it.
But this is some place that noone judges you.
Everyone's here for the samegoal.
And even if they win or don'twin, everyone's there just to
make friends.

SPEAKER_12 (21:16):
You have also been involved in some other pageants
over the past, right?
Tell me about that.

SPEAKER_07 (21:23):
So last year, I competed at Miss Oregon for the
Miss America program, and I wasMiss Lane County's teen last
year, and that was a specialtitle to me.
I got to spend most of my yearactually in Lane County and get
to be hands-on in events and getto help out.

SPEAKER_12 (21:38):
Like what?

SPEAKER_07 (21:39):
One of my favorite events that we went to is the
Burrito Brigade.
Burrito

SPEAKER_12 (21:42):
Brigade?

SPEAKER_07 (21:44):
Yeah, we made over 200 burritos for the homeless.
It was really fun just to get tosee everyone there who is
passionate about volunteering,is passionate about helping
their community.

SPEAKER_12 (21:53):
I know your mom had sent on an email some time ago
soliciting extra support becauseit is not an inexpensive
activity for you.

SPEAKER_07 (22:03):
So by now, one of the things that I look for to
compete at state is we have toraise$300 to the Miss America
Partner of this year, which isGo Red for Women's Heart Health.
I have to raise$300 to America'sAssociation of Heart Health.
That's fun.

SPEAKER_12 (22:19):
So how have you done on that?

SPEAKER_07 (22:20):
So far, I've been posting out stuff on social
media.
I still am looking for morepeople to donate for that.
And one way you can do it is youcan go on my Instagram, which is
TessaVanillaSandCross, on myFacebook, TessaVanillaSandCross,
and there's a link that willtake you straight to it.

SPEAKER_12 (22:33):
And again, even though the pageant is underway,
you still can accept thosecontributions.
Yes.
They are needed for you to beable to continue to compete
throughout the whole program.

SPEAKER_07 (22:44):
Yes.

SPEAKER_12 (22:45):
And you have done well?

SPEAKER_07 (22:47):
Yes, I have.
So far with like competing andeverything, I feel like I've
gone very good and it's gonevery well, so.

SPEAKER_12 (22:55):
Tess Bonella, Sam Quest, congratulations.
We look forward to having youback as Miss Oregon Teen with a
