Katie Kurpanek (00:00):
So we have
talked about this before, the
(00:02):
average family in the US spendsover $9,000 in their baby's
first year. And that does noteven include childcare. It feels
like there are a million thingsthat your baby needs, especially
within their first year. Andespecially if this is your very
first baby, so let me help youto save some of those 1000s of
dollars with a low waste babyregistry. Hi, I'm Katie, I am a
(00:25):
mama a coach and a podcaster, who is focused on empowering eco
minded mamas to livesustainably, saving 1000s of
dollars and living a life thatis in alignment with their core
values, so that they can carefor their families and their
environment. In today's episode,I have created a low waste baby
registry for you. So be sure tocheck out the episode
(00:45):
description so that you candownload that. Okay, let's get
into it. So I shared thisresource in another episode, I
will link it in the episodedescription as well. This is a
website called Baby Center. Andon that website, you can use
their Baby Cost Calculator toget an estimate for about how
much it's going to cost you inyour baby's first year. So using
(01:07):
that data, I went through it andI found some of the higher cost
items. So things like diapersand wipes that is averaging
about $1,100 in a year. Clothingaverages the average family
about $984 a year, a car seatabout $230, a basic stroller
about $309. And then roomfurnishings, I kind of put this
(01:30):
whole category together. Sothings like the crib, the crib
mattress, the changing table, what else was on there, the baby
monitor, Sound Machine, thingslike that, about $1,300. And
then there were all these otherthings that were on their list
that I won't get into right now.
But those were some of the liketop cost items, and most of
those things, we would prettymuch consider essential. So this
(01:53):
is where I really emphasize tolean into our community. And
baby showers are an excellentway to do this. We don't need to
buy everything new, especiallynot all on our own. And it makes
way more sense to ask ourcommunity, our family members,
our friends who already want tobless us and support us during
(02:13):
this time. Right. That's kind ofwhere the whole idea of the baby
registry comes in. But insteadof getting a bunch of like
really cute things that youdidn't necessarily need or want,
then, you know, people createtheir registries on places like
Target or Amazon. But it, itworks to an extent. It doesn't
(02:34):
always work out well if you arean eco minded mama. So if you
are eco minded, then you likelyvalue products that are non
toxic, plastic, free, sustainable, you know all those
different labels, things likethat you may have particular
brands and businesses that youwant to support that's really
(02:55):
important to you. Maybe you wantto support like small, locally
owned businesses, or justsmaller scale businesses that
are doing a lot to care for theplanet. And these items aren't
always available on like the bigbox store registry sites, you
know, Amazon, Target, Babies RUs or whatever that is. So maybe
(03:15):
there's also very specificbusinesses and brands or types
of products that you do not wantto support, that you do not want
in your home, you don't wantthem on your baby's skin, etc.
This is how I am too. So I foundit was easier to just create my
own baby registry template backin 2020 when we had our baby
(03:37):
shower for my son, and I havesince used that same template
and just recustomized it forChristmas gifts, birthday gifts,
etc. I've also shared it withfriends who requested it because
they loved it back at my babyshower in 2020. This template is
super easy to customize and canmake the list fit your family
(03:57):
and your unique needs and wants.
And then it's digital. So it issuper easy to just share it via
email or Facebook or eventexting however you're
communicating with your familyand friends and baby shower
guests. So now you will have away to save 1000s of your own
(04:18):
dollars with the help of yourcommunity in buying so many of
these essential items for yourbaby and they already want to
support you but now they canknow for sure that they are
contributing something that yourfamily highly values and
actually wants. Okay, so be sureto click the link in the episode
description so that you candownload your own customizable
(04:41):
copy for free. And if you wantmore support when it comes to
What do I actually put on thistemplate? like, I have a lot of
items on there for you that Iput into the template and you
can change them if you want. Butif you're wondering like What
other kinds of products should Ibe putting on this registry?
What other kinds of brands andbusinesses are out there that
(05:01):
are super sustainable and I wantto know for sure that they are
not greenwashing me, or I wantto know that they're for sure
safe and non toxic, totallysustainable etc. Then you can
join The Eco-Minded MamaCollective today to receive more
personalized guidance from meand from an online community of
mom friends who are just likeyou all supporting each other on
(05:24):
a monthly basis to save moneyand care for our families and
the earth. All of that is linkedin the episode description. I
hope to see you on the inside ofthat Collective membership and
until then, I will be back nextweek with another supporting
episode on living sustainably, Iwill talk to you then!
