Speaker 2 (00:25):
Welcome back to the
Elevate Media Podcast.
I am Chris Anderson, your host.
Today, I'm going to break downsomething that has become an
integral part of our lives, andthat's video production.
Whether you're a contentcreator or a business owner,
video production is part ofbuilding your presence.
Whether you're a contentcreator, business owner, video
(00:47):
production is just a part of it.
Now, in today's digital age, theimportance of video production
cannot be overstated.
Just take a moment to thinkabout it.
From the ads that grab yourattention on social media to the
engaging educational contentyou find online, videos are
everywhere, and this is not byaccident.
We've witnessed such a shift inthe way that information is
(01:10):
conveyed and consumed.
Now, this era of digitalcommunication, businesses,
educators and content creatorsare harnessing the power of
video to connect with theiraudience, also to tell
compelling stories and achievetheir goals.
But what goes on behind thescenes to make these videos
reality?
That's the question, and that'swhere video production comes in
(01:31):
.
So I'm going to take youthrough the three essential
stages of video production andI'm going to break them down so
you can understand what goesinto each of those stages.
So, whether you're an aspiringcontent creator, an entrepreneur
looking to enhance your brand.
Or maybe you're just curiousabout video production and how
to get started.
This episode's for you.
(01:51):
So to start things off, we'regoing to get into the crucial
first stage of video production, and that's the pre-production.
Nothing fancy here.
Pre-production is where themagic begins.
It's the phase where the ideastake shape and plans are laid
out, so think of it as theblueprint of your video project.
(02:13):
So what is the definition ofthe pre-production stage?
Simply put, pre-production isthe planning phase that precedes
actual filming or recording.
It's the stuff that comesbefore.
It's where we strategize, weorganize and prepare for the
upcoming production.
Now there are some things withinpre-production that we're going
(02:34):
to go over.
These are critical steps thatset the foundation for a
successful video project.
The first one is your conceptdevelopment and brainstorming.
This is where you're going tobe really creative and that
creativity can flourish.
It's all about generating ideas, brainstorming different
concepts and defining theoverarching message or story of
(02:56):
your video.
During this phase, you'll shapethe core vision of your project
.
Next is script writing andstoryboarding.
So once you have a clearconcept, it's time to bring it
to life through scripting.
This involves crafting acompelling narrative, writing
the dialogues and then creatinga visual roadmap through
(03:16):
storyboarding, now awell-written script.
It's the backbone of any videoproject.
So remember, whether you'recreating a video podcast, a
corporate course video or abusiness promo, like we do at
Elevate, success begins with awell-executed pre-production
phase.
Now we're going to move on tothat second stage, production.
(03:37):
Production is where the actionhappens.
It's the phase where all theplanning and the preparation
come to life on camera.
So, in simple terms, productionis the actual filming or
recording of your video project.
Pretty simple, it's when thecameras roll, the lights come on
and the talent performs.
So now we're going to get intoand break down the different
(04:00):
things within the productionphase itself.
The first, obviously, filmingand recording.
This is the heart of theproduction.
It involves the capturing ofvisuals in the audio that's
going to make up your finalproduct.
It's where the script andstoryboards come to life and
every shot is meticulouslycomposed.
And then we've got number twothe managing of the crew and
(04:24):
equipment.
So, if you have multiple peoplehelping you out, or if you have
multiple cameras or differentthings going on, a successful
production relies on awell-coordinated team.
You might have a cameraoperator, maybe a sound engineer
, even people running lights andso much more.
Or maybe it's just you and acouple pieces of tech that you
(04:44):
got to make sure are up andrunning.
All of it, no matter how manyor how little, has to work
seamlessly together, becauseeven if it's just you, you still
have to manage your equipment, from the cameras to the
microphones, and it's allequally critical.
And the next part is capturingmultiple takes and angles.
So you want to make sure thatyou're getting the best possible
(05:05):
material to work with when yougo and post production.
It's common to shoot multipletakes of each scene for various
angles.
If you're doing a big videocommercial type project, this
allows you to have flexibilityduring editing.
It's the same thing.
If you're doing an in-personinterview, you can have
different angles, so ifsomething looks off in one, you
can switch over to another angleto make it a seamless
(05:27):
transition and keep thatcinematic effect.
Or maybe it you know you'regoing through and you have to
add a B roll, change it upbecause of something that
happens.
If you only have one take, thenyou have to be more creative in
post production to work with ordeal with some flub-ups.
And then, number four ensuringlighting and sound quality.
Proper lighting sets the moodand enhances the visuals, while
(05:50):
high quality sound is essentialfor clear and immersive audio.
Your production team oryourself need to pay close
attention to both aspects toensure a polished result.
Production is where the hardwork of pre-production pays off.
It's the exciting phase.
It's filled with the creativityand collaboration, but it's
just one piece of the puzzle.
(06:11):
Next comes post-production, andthat's where the raw footage
transforms into its finalpolished video, and this stage
can almost be the most dauntingout of them all.
But this is where the magic ofvideo truly unfolds.
It's the phase where all thefootage you've collected, all
the audio clips, are transformedinto one single engaging video
(06:33):
production.
It's a process of editing andenhancing the filmed or recorded
content to create that finalvideo where creativity meets
technical expertise.
So what are the key tasks withinpost-production?
The first one is obviouslyvideo editing and assembly.
Really good editors can reviewall the footage, select the best
(06:54):
takes and angles to craft acompelling narrative pretty
quickly.
They can piece it together, making sure that the transitions
from scene to scene are goodand match up with the pacing.
If you're doing the editing, this is where you're going
through and picking out anymistakes that you had during the
recording.
This is where you're putting ifyou had multiple angles
(07:14):
together and then you're tryingto mesh it up with your audio as
well.
And then the second thing isadding the music, the sound
effects and voiceovers, ifneeded.
Audio plays a crucial role invideo production.
In post-production, soundengineers add music, sound
effects and voiceovers toenhance the viewer's experience
and convey emotion.
(07:34):
You can do this, too, as youedit.
Maybe it's adding sound effects, maybe it's just adding a small
theme of music throughout theepisode.
And then the third colorcorrection and color grading.
Color correction ensures thatyou're consistent and that
there's realism within yourvideo, while color grading adds
a unique style or mood to thevideo itself.
(07:55):
These processes give the videoits final, polished look Thing.
Number four special effects andgraphics.
For videos with special effectsor graphic elements,
post-production is where theseelements are created and
integrated seamlessly into thefootage.
You might see videos onlinethat have text or titles or
emojis or GIFs or memes pop upon the screen.
(08:18):
These are all part of that.
Graphics.
These are all part of thespecial effects and graphics.
Maybe you see some really cooltransitions happening in
people's intros or during thevideo.
Those also happen here.
And then number five finalizingand exporting the video.
So you've got the final touchesapplied.
The video is prepared fordistribution Now.
(08:40):
This includes formatting,resolution adjustment and
quality checks to ensure itmeets your industry's standards.
Depending on what your industryis, those standards can vary.
Post-production is where thestory truly comes to life.
It's where creativity meetsprecision.
It turns the raw footage into acaptivating visual experience,
(09:01):
whether it be video, podcasts ora full-blown commercial or
movie.
This part is crucial.
So, as we wrap things up, it'sessential to emphasize the
importance of each productionstage.
Pre-production lays thegroundwork, production brings
your vision to life, andpost-production adds the
finishing touches that make yourvideo shine.
But remember, video productionis a collaborative effort.
