We're so honored. We've got Jay Renee on the phone,
who is one of the performers at the Raleigh Christmas
Parade tomorrow, kicking off the holiday season around the Triangle.
And you are a born and bred Durham native. We're rare,
so bull City in the house.

Yeah, okay, so thank you Carolina Waves singing your praises.
Obviously we've seen all of your stuff. I was like, man,
she's good. But you have a huge following, and so
this is this is like you are on your way
to just blowing it up. We're gonna see you everywhere
before long.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
I can't you know what, I'll take that. Yes, put
that out there.

That's right, put it in the Universe's put it in.

Let's put it out there. Let's go ahead and put
it out there. Yes, I'm excited about tomorrow. Like you said,
I am born and bred from Durham, North Carolina. But
you know, Alreadie, you is in the area. So I've
been to the Christmas Array when I was smaller, So
it's almost a full circle moment. Because I going like
when I was eight and nine in ten, So this

is this is exciting. This is such a big, big
circle moment. Okay, super excited.

So is all of your family showing up to see
you perform, because it is a big full circle moment
for you and your whole thing.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
It is. Yes, my my family's coming in. I teach
those cyclones Smith's Middle School in Carboro, North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Carborough,
So I have some students coming out there too, So
I'm like super excited they get to see me, not
in a teacher rope, but as Jay Renee. So I'm
super excited.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Think you're teaching our youth and then you're out here singing.
I mean, I'm just saying, go girl, go, that's amazing.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

What is the holiday tradition that always like, you know,
I know that it's not even Thanksgiving you it will
be soon, but people already start thinking about Christmas when
we do the Raley Christmas Parade. So is there a
holiday tradition your family does every year?

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Yes? Every year we actually have two. We come to
my parents' house Christmas Eve, the entire family, kids, grandkids,
and my my dad cooks, you know, grills a little things.
My mom reads Christmas stories and they make ginger play
ginger houses and we play games, and then we have
a brunch that day too. So that's every year, Like

every year, it doesn't matter brunch ms Eve. We're having
our brunch and we're having our sleepover. So every year
that I'm excited. I can smell the apple pie already.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Well, there be a time where it rotates to your
house and your hosting, or it always needs to be
at your parents.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
It will probably down the line, but I love coming
to my parents' house. It gives me nostalgia. Yeah, it
gives just the whole nostalgia of like all and now
see my niece and nephews and we have our uh
you know, pajamas on and things like that. I it
probably will, but we love. Everybody loves camping at our
parents' house. It's like the that's the staple, that's where

(02:48):
we're going.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
Absolutely we go to my grandma's house.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
So yes, okay, that's where we're going. And you know
down south, listen, once is the staple, that's where it is.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
That's exactly Okay, So when did you know you wanted
to perform and sing. You said you were going to
the parade eight nine, ten years old. Were you looking
at those singers at that time saying like, hey, one
day that might be a performing Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
I was performing actually at that age by then too.
I was in a group actually out of Rawley called
them Martin Luther King All Children's Choir. Yeah, so I
was performing around that time then. So but I've always
known I wanted to sing since like the age of six.
Something that is a God give a gift that I
just knew.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
This is what What are your performing tomorrow? Is it
a secret?

Speaker 2 (03:29):
It's a secret. We're gonna, We're gonna. I want to
be I want you all to be surprised. But no,
it's a phase. It's a phase.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Okay, I like that.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
It's a phase.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
How do you have time to teach sing, do all
the things? Like? That's a lot, but we always see
you perform.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
It is a lot, But you know what, I've been
grace to be able to handle it all. So I
take it with strives. But you can follow me on

I have holiday music and regular clean the house, feel
good music, good soul music. They're all on all streaming platforms.

I've actually been teaching for fourteen years. I graduated in
twenty eleven, okay, and so I did elementary for a
little while. Now I'm with the middle schoolers, and so yeah,
I love the fact that they can see that you

don't have to be bound to one thing, you can
do multiple things, and so I think it's very huge
and I'm very grateful. Then while I'm teaching, they get
to see this and so yeah, I'm excited. I go
a full circle moment.
