Episode Summary:
In this Fandom Round-Up episode of The Fandom Portals Podcast, Aaron and Brash return with a fun, insightful dive into everything they’ve been watching, streaming, or rewatching this week. From their mixed thoughts on the TikTok-styled Karate Kid: Legends reboot to the gritty brilliance of The Penguin, they cover what’s working in modern streaming (Apple TV+ aesthetics!) and what isn’t (Cobra Kai’s gang wars in LA, anyone?). Plus, a fiery debate on digital ownership vs cinema loyalty, platform pricing quirks, and what makes Prime or Apple the best bang for your movie-loving buck.

Topics:

  • Karate Kid: Legends – Swipe cuts, Jackie Chan’s return, and Daniel vs Johnny legacy moments
  • Why Cobra Kai may have overstayed its welcome
  • The Penguin series – Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti dominate Gotham
  • Streaming platforms compared: Apple TV+ vs Prime Video rentals and UX
  • DC vs Marvel: Game quality and live-action future
  • Rediscovering Gotham Knights (and finally finding a co-op partner!)
  • Netflix recs: Tires, Ghosts (US), and Man on the Inside
  • Moviegoing vs digital convenience: the cinema support dilemma
  • Sweet Tooth: Supporting new IPs and loving original stories
  • Sneak peek: Waterworld episode coming soon!

Key Takeaways:

  • Karate Kid: Legends is flashy, fun, but formulaic—targeting a younger TikTok generation with swipe edits and digital flair.
  • The Penguin captures Gotham’s gritty underbelly like never before—Colin Farrell is unrecognizable, and Cristin Milioti delivers a powerhouse performance.
  • Apple TV+ is dominating with high-production, short-form prestige TV (no, this isn’t an ad—just facts).
  • Prime is still the go-to for digital ownership and rare films, despite awkward rental pricing.
  • DC's animated shows remain top-tier, but Marvel currently rules the video game space with more immersive titles.
  • The nostalgia train has hit Cobra Kai hard—maybe it’s time to let the dojo rest.
  • Digital convenience is real—but if you love a film, support it at the cinema when you can.

Quotes:

“If you’re that excited about a movie—go to the cinema. That’s how we get more original stories.”
“Jackie Chan plays a funny, modern Mr. Miyagi—but with the same wisdom and way more jokes.”
“Ben Wang is Gen Z’s Daniel LaRusso—charming, cool, and full of fight.”
“Apple’s visual production is chef’s kiss—every show looks like a poster.”
“Nightwing is my main. Red Hood’s yours? Let’s finally play Gotham Knig

Speaker 1 (00:00):
I don't know what have you been watching?

Speaker 2 (00:01):
What have you been watching?
What have you been watching?
No?

Speaker 1 (00:03):
what have you been into?
What have you been into?
What have you been into?
What have I been into?
What have you been into?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
I've been into a few, actually I've been into.
I'll still be watching Motobotthat's coming out weekly, which
I'm now really frustrated.
I did that because I can't justwatch it one go.
But I'll be watching Stick, anew show with Owen Wilson.
He's a former pro golfer like areally like.
They call them the sticks, likethere's your really good pro
golfers and then there's yoursticks and your sticks are you

(00:44):
like your best of the bestgolfers?
Yep, he was considered a stickand then had a.
I won't try to spoil anything.
There was an issue.
There was something really badhappened in his life and then he
eventually gets divorced withhis wife, leaves him, he's in

(01:05):
the dumps scraping to get by andthen he comes across a kid at
driving range who justabsolutely knocks these balls
out of the park and he sort ofbets him that he can't hit
different markers and he hitsthose markers square on like
bullseye and uh, actuallyabsolute prodigy by the looks of
it.
So he's uh thought this couldbe my way of moving on and

(01:27):
getting over it, by coachingthis kid to become better than
what I was.
But in doing that he also hasfalls into old habits of like
he's scamming people becausethat's how he's been getting by
by scamming people.
So so far it's been really good.
Four episodes out so far andyeah, it's been pretty

(01:48):
entertaining.
So far I like it.
Though I reckon if you're intosort of comic sports movies like
Ted Lasso, I wouldn't say thisis Ted Lasso.
I still think Ted Lasso isprobably better than this,
because Ted Lasso is one of myfavorite shows of all time, but
is one of my favorite shows ofall time.
But if you like similar, likethose kind of shows about sports
that are also a bit of a comedy, I'd definitely say hit this

(02:09):
one up Very cool.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
Yeah, it's created by , or the director on it is Jason
Keller and he was behindMachine Gun Preacher with Gerard
Butler.
It also started.
The young guy in it is PeterDager and he hasn't been in that
much Peter Dager, I haven'tseen him in that much no, peter
Dager, is that the?

Speaker 2 (02:31):
that's the young boy.
Oh yeah, no, yeah, he hasn'tbeen in much of that, but
because what's his name, peoplemight know him Mark Maron.
He was in the Women ofWrestling show with Brie Brie
community, alison Brie.
Oh right, yeah, yeah, and hewas really good in that too.

(02:51):
If anyone hasn't watched Womenin Wrestling, that was a really
good show.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
That's a really good show as well yeah, mark Maron
also plays the snake in Bad Guysfor any of those people that
have children watch kids movies.
But yeah, he is he like thementor.
Mark Maron, does he play likethe mentor character?

Speaker 2 (03:04):
No, so he was like the mentor character.
He was also a girlfriend.
I believe he was also the thecaddy or the the caddy for the
main character oh, for owenwilson's character.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
Yep, price is his name, price cahill, yeah so he
was, I think, at one point.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Because at one point um it suggested oh, why don't
you caddy for the kid?
Again?
He's like no, I'm done carryingpeople's clubs around.
So at some point he wasprobably don't you caddy for the
kid again?
He's like no, I'm done carryingpeople's clubs around.
So at some point he wasprobably sort of mentor caddy
for Owen Wilson's character, before he stopped golfing.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Yeah, I'll tell you what Brash Apple has been coming
out with some pretty likereally clean cut shows lately.
I've noticed throughout theirproduction they're like 8 to 10
episodes, really tightstorytelling and they actually
just look beautiful.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
There's nothing rough around the edges with them,
yeah just like Ted Lassoshrinking with Harrison Ford and
Jason Segel.
That was really good.
Is Severance on Apple?
Sure is yeah, yeah, Severance.
And then, yeah, you've got nowStick Murderbot, which is on

(04:10):
Apple as well, yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
And you know what, they're actually pulling in some
pretty big stars to come intotheir short TV series.
I think everybody's kind ofattracted to this new space for
streaming entertainment and evenlike I'm looking at some of the
posters now for some of theseshows and they're just like,
they're really freakingbeautiful, like everything from
the production to the writing tothe storytelling to the actual

(04:32):
poster.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
art is really gorgeous on Apple Plus right now
and we're not sponsored, huhyeah we're actually saying this,
because it actually, like, really looks that way to be
honest, I pretty much have everysingle well in Australia, like
for Australia at least, everysingle um video streaming
service.
Just with that, I do have tosay sort of still, sort of prime

(04:53):
is sort of my favorite Cause Ithink prime has access to, I
think like it's easier access toa wide, wider range of things,
or for me and my what I like aswell, cause I'm not afraid to
buy a movie and I find it easierto buy movies on through Prime
than it is anything else, andusually like, if you can't, if

(05:14):
there's not any streaming siteshere in Australia for us, you
can usually buy it on Prime, which is what I do.
I do have to say that Prime, their rental, is fucking.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Yeah, I think they're actually pushing for the
digital ownership across ratherthan the rental, because, yeah,
you can't really.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Renting on Apple is a lot cheaper than renting on
Prime.
Hmm, yeah, yeah, because likerenting on Apple is like five
bucks and then the movie's like24 bucks, whereas like on Prime,
and then the movie's like 24bucks, whereas like on Prime
it's like 15, 20 bucks to rentit and then like 24, 25 bucks to
buy it.
You're like I might as welljust buy it.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
Yeah, that's exactly it and I think that's exactly
what they want their customersto do.
But yeah, for me I'm alwaysreluctant to buy digital media
because I'm a guy that likes toconsume heaps and heaps of
special features and featuresand there's only some digital
content that have those extrafeatures like the old dvds does.
And I haven't dipped my toeinto actually having a full-on
digital hd 4k collection yet,but it's in my future and I've

(06:12):
just got to like hope that mybeautiful partner carly doesn't
listen to this so she knows myfinancial plans, but it'll
probably that's not my mind'salready started.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
I've already got, like I think I've bought maybe
probably close to 50 or somovies.
I've bought on Prime becauseI'm like, oh, I'm just going to
buy this because that way I'lljust go, not going to leave
watching it, yeah, and then likea week later it comes out like
on Netflix.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
I'm like shit yep, yeah, that's actually a
frustrating thing for me when Iactually go to see something in
the cinema, because I do like tosupport the movie going
experience, as it were.
I'm a little bit I don't knowwhat the word is for that
whether it's like posh orwhatever I want to see movies,
continue to come to the, to themovie cinema, the theater, yeah.

(06:55):
So I like to go and watch themthere and support them in that
way, whether it's by myself, with friends or whatever.
And you know if, if a moviegoes to like the theater and
then two weeks later it comes tostreaming, it's like you're one
like ruining the back end forthat movie.
And two, it's like stoppingpeople from going to the movie
theater.
And we're in a culture now whereeverything's kind of mass

(07:16):
produced.
So whenever there's an originalstory, like when sinners came
out, everyone just sort of losestheir mind because it's just
like this is great, this is notbased on anything previously
done before and it's a new asfar as there is really quote, no
real new stories, unquote.
It's like a newer sort of storythat nobody had seen in terms

(07:37):
of franchise.
So I really like to supportthat.
That being said, theconvenience of digital is just
so, yeah, so it's just so mucheasier.
Exactly, exactly, especiallywhen you've got like a film and
tv podcast and you've got toreview a different movie every
week like yeah, and then go likesometimes watch it more than
once, like it's definitely goodfor that too.
So we're not haters here of thedigital media, it's just

(07:59):
everybody should still go to themovies, in my opinion and you
don't have to to the movies forall your movies.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
But especially if you're excited for something,
you're like, oh, I can't waitfor that movie to come out.
And then, oh, I can't wait forthat movie to be so good, I hope
it comes out on Netflix soon.
Like, oh man, if you're thatexcited about it, just go to the
movies and watch it, have thatexperience for something.
If it movies and watch it.
Like, have that experience forsomething.
If it's a movie like, oh yeah,I reckon that'd be pretty good.

(08:25):
Yeah, that one, you can waituntil it comes to streaming.
If there's something you'rereally excited about, just go to
the movies and then you'resupporting that movie you really
like and then it might getpushed.
If it's like, especially ifit's a new IP, if everyone goes
to the movies and sees it, theymight push it to get like a
second movie.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
Yeah, or push for more original content like that
as well.
We also acknowledge, obviously, that not everybody's in the
space to go to the movies allthe time you might have like no
time.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
I'm not even in the space to get the movies all the
time.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
Financially, like kids and things like that.
They can really hamper yourfree time, as it were.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
But yeah whenever you can try, it's a good experience
exactly and especially if youdon't know, in a few months it's
coming out like months andmonths and months.
Just screw away 20 bucks orhowever much it is to get a
ticket and then just buy somecandy from the supermarket and
stuff in your pockets exactlyright we don't condone that, so
it's just.

(09:21):
I kind of do, though, because Ido sorry as well, I use it all
the time yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
I kind of do, because the variety of snacks at
cinemas is just not Lackluster.
It's very lackluster.
There's really no jellies there.
I don't know if any othercountry listening to this is the
same, but in Australia we havelike popcorn drinks and then
Maltesers, maltesers, that'spretty much Snakes.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Maybe, yeah, minties, I don't know why, but yeah, why
do they have minties?

Speaker 1 (09:46):
I don't know, yeah, I don't know.
Anyway, we digress.
What have I been into?
I'll tell you what I've watched.
I did go to the cinemas and Iwatched the Karate Kids legend
movie.
Did you watch Cobra Kai?

Speaker 2 (10:02):
I wanted to start watching it, and then I realized
that they were up to like thefifth or sixth season.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
I was like yeah, they pumped them out.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Damn.
That is a lot for me to gothrough.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
To be fair, I think the first three seasons were
very watchable and then afterthat it became oh, you're still
fighting another rival, dojo.
Oh, daniel LaRusso, you arestill teaching kids to engage in
karate, and pretty much incitegang wars through LA.
Okay, cool, it just gets a bitfar-fetched.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
After season three, season four but wait, wasn't it
all meant to be about Cobra Kai?

Speaker 1 (10:34):
Yeah, johnny Lawrence , he's there too.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
And now it's sort of shifted and now it's all about.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Yeah, it's all about Johnny Lawrence and it's
literally it pivots across fromDaniel to Johnny.
But yeah, it was a goodeye-opening moment when Cobra
Kai first came out, whereeverybody was just like, yeah,
wait a minute.
Johnny Lawrence wasn't really avillain there, he was kind of
hard done by.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Yeah, because it wasn't him.
It was a way he was beingtaught.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
Yeah, it was definitely his sensei and the
Cobra Kai mentality.
Daniel also cheated in that lastmatch.
He did.
He used an illegal move.
He did use an illegal move, I'mjust saying, and he still won
for some reason.
But look, he also had his legsswept.
So eye for an eye.
No, we don't condone thateither.
We're revenge, no revengesweepings here, oh man.

(11:24):
No.
But it's a.
Cobra Kai Legends is like acoming of age martial arts story
.
If you're going to see thismovie because you really want a
fresh and new take on Karate Kidand you want to see something
you haven't seen before but afamiliar IP and you really want
something new and fresh from thegenre, you're not going to get
it from this movie because it'spretty much a re-add from the
old Karate Kid.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
I was going to say it kind of seems like a bit more
just a modern take on theoriginal Karate Kid from what
the trailers look like.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
Well, do you remember that one that came out with
Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan?
Yeah, and it was literally likea young boy is out of their
original city, same as Danielwas.
This centers around a characterwhose name is Li Feng.
He is Chinese and he moves toNew York to follow his mom who
got a job over there.

(12:13):
Very similar story and premisealready, I can guarantee.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
In the Jason Smith one In the Jason Smith one.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
Yeah, he did the opposite.
He moved to China from America,so it's literally like a table
switch on that.
Jackie Chan's in the movie.
He plays Mr Han again and he isLee Fong's uncle, and Lee's
mother, who is played by Ming-NaWen, is Dr Fong.
She's the one who kind of movesaway, moves away Through this.

(12:39):
Lee obviously tries to make hisway in New York, find new
friends.
He's under a secret and verytight pact from his mother that
is along the lines of noviolence in New York.
We're here for a fresh start,so he can't practice his karate,
but obviously the karate callis too strong, yep, yeah.
So he ends up finding thislittle deli.

(13:01):
And there's actually an actor inthis movie that I haven't seen
for a while that I really reallylike.
What was his name?
Have you seen?
Have you seen Dawson's Creek?
I have.
Yes, he played Pacey onDawson's Creek.
Oh yeah, joshua Jackson, joshuaJackson, dawson's Creek.

(13:23):
Oh yeah, joshua Jackson, joshuaJackson, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
, he's in it and he plays one ofLee Fong's school friend's
fathers.
I know we're talking likeuncles, sisters, brothers, child
here, but no, a school friendof Lee Fong.
Her dad owns a pizzeria and thegentleman's played by Joshua
Jackson.
He was a previous boxingchampion and there's a really
unnecessary subplot where LeeFong trains Joshua Jackson to

(13:45):
box through his expertise inkarate.
I'm like, how do these twothings connect?
For one and for two, why isthis man allowing a child to
train him to be violent?
But anyway, I think the movieoverall is very much targeted
towards like a, you know, an 11to 16 year old range, because

(14:08):
the editing and production of itwas very much made for a TikTok
audience, if you know what Imean by that.
Very much.
Two second clip swipe here, swipe there, across the cuts,
like literally some of the cutswere literally swipes, swipe
cuts, and you could seedifferent sort of pop-ups come
through that you see on tiktokall the time, like, uh, like
popping up powers and anddifferent sort of visuals when

(14:30):
the tournaments were comingthrough.
Uh, it's like the scoreboardsand the names and things like
that.
So it's very much for a tiktokaudience, you might say, and
it's targeted towards thoseyoung people.
But it does have that classickarate kid story where it's
underdog versus everybody elseand he comes through and he
relies on his grit and his powerand his determination to win
the day.

(14:50):
Now Daniel LaRusso is in it too, played by the great Ralph
Macchio Returns for I don't know, he's probably got 15 minutes
of screen time or something likethat and he and Jackie Chan
together are really good.
They're pretty funny.
Jackie Chan's probably thehighlight of the movie for me.
He plays like a really funnyuncle and he's just like cut and
dry, and that's the funny partabout it, because everybody
thinks he's supposed to be likea Mr Miyagi, which is very

(15:12):
traditional, very serious.
But Jackie Chan's very much theopposite.
And the thing about Lee Fong inthis movie as well is he fights
a lot like Jackie Chan.
When Jackie was young I don'tknow about you, but whenever I
watched Jackie Chan, he alwaysseemed like he was pulling off
these martial arts movesaccidentally, and he's literally

(15:32):
exactly the same.
Ben Wang is the actor who playsLee Fong and, yeah, it's fun.
It's 90 plus minutes of funaction, quick cuts, and it's not
something you'll regretwatching.
Is it going to revolutionizethe Karate Kid genre?
I don't think so, but I am gladthat we're not getting any more

(15:52):
Cobra Kai, and I don't know ifthis is spoiler alert for
anybody.
Give you a moment to pause, butif you are a fan of Johnny
Lawrence.
You will be disappointedbecause he's not in this movie.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
Until the post-credit scene.
Oh, really, yeah, but it's likea, it's like a, it's literally
like a fan service post-creditscene.
Yeah, so they place him inthere interacting with Daniel
for a bit so everybody can go ah, there's Johnny Lawrence, but
yeah, it really doesn't fitanything for the story or
anything like that.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
So yeah, yeah, but I know Ben Wang.
Ben Wang he's in.
I don't know if you've seenthis.
It's on Netflix.
I would say American BornChinese.

Speaker 1 (16:38):
No, I haven't seen that one.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
Yeah, that's actually pretty good.
So, um, no, I haven't seen thatone.
Yeah, that's actually prettygood.
He's just a normal teenager athigh school and then he meets a
new kid at the school and itturns out that the new kid he

(17:00):
meets at school is actually theMonkey King.
Oh, really, yeah.
And all these like mythologicalChinese gods and shit start
showing up around school.
Oh, wow, so I just normal dudejust getting like sucked into
this bloody, like war betweenthe Chinese gods.

Speaker 1 (17:15):
Yeah, that has Michelle Yeoh into it as well.

Speaker 2 (17:17):
Yeah, yeah, and she's amazing.
She's amazing at anything yeah.
And Ki yeah, she's, and she'samazing, she's amazing anything
yeah, and kihei kwan as well.
Yep, wow, yeah, it is um,absolutely, yeah, absolutely so
good, so 2023.

Speaker 1 (17:28):
That came out on netflix by the look of it no,
disney no disney plus yeah, yeah, there you go yeah yeah,
speaking of ben ben wang in thismovie, he's also probably a
highlight for me.
Like jackie was funny andawesome in the movie, but Ben
Wang he he speaks to the the Rizgeneration and I say that like
an old man, like he's verycharismatic and if you think

(17:50):
back to like Karate Kid DanielLaRusso, he also wasn't like a a
little bit of a dork.
He wasn't like a dorky kid, hewas kind of cool and kind of
smooth in that kind of way andlike understated charismatic
kind of way.
And Ben Wang smooth in thatkind of way, in like an
understated charismatic kind ofway, and Ben Wang does pull that
off as well.
So I think he's, in terms ofParade Kid, if they do make a
second and a third with him init, I think he'll definitely go

(18:11):
the distance to pull off aHercules reference.
But yeah, I recommend this oneto anybody who likes the Parade
Kid series and if you have kidsbetween the age of, you know, 11
and 16, definitely give this awatch.
It's a pretty safe watch aswell.
So I wouldn't say that it is myfavorite Karate Kid though

(18:37):
which one is your favorite?
my favorite Karate Kid is,controversially the second
Karate Kid movie.
Is that one where he travels toyeah, he travels to Okinawa in
Japan.
Your favorite, my favoritekarate kid is controversially
the second karate kid movie isthat one where he travels to?
yeah, he travels to okinawa injapan.
A special move he learns.
Oh, that's another thing aswell.
They always learn a specialmove at the end that helps them
hit victory.
That's just like a story noteof a karate kid movie.
And yeah, yeah, they have onein legends, this new one.

(18:59):
And in the second karate kid, Ilike how they all get out the
drum and twist it and there'sthe little drum playing.
And the soundtrack of numbertwo is also the best and I like
how Daniel LaRusso is really inMr Miyagi's playground in that
one.
So that's my favorite.
What's your favorite Karate Kidmovie has to be the one that's
the original.
You're the OG boy, yeah, yep, because he's on one's original.

(19:24):
You're the OG boy, yeah, yep.
So let's get into ourrecommendations for this week on
our episode of what have youBeen Into.
So my recommendation, firstly,is probably something that
everybody has already seen thatI'm late to the party on, but if
you haven't watched it youdefinitely should, and it is the
Penguin.
I had been brought to thisseries by my good friend
Lollivie.
He featured in the very firstepisode of the Phantom of the

(19:47):
Puddles podcast.
He did the bear with me.
He's kind of my TV show guy andhe, yeah, he said you really
need to watch the Penguin.
Because he knows that I'm aBatman fan.
I have a Batman tattoo on myarm that I got when I was very
young.
When you know, I'm going to getBatman on my arm because I love
him, that kind of thing, butyeah, this is such a really good
representation of the Penguinand Gotham City in particular
and I think that has to benailed.

(20:07):
When you're doing a Batmanstory, you really really have to
nail Gotham City.

Speaker 2 (20:16):
I love the Penguin.
I love the Matt Reeves BatmanYep, fuck yeah.
And Penguin.
I love that world.
That world Yep, fuck yeah.
And Penguin, I love that world.
That world's so awesome.
And if what's his name?
Who's in charge of DC right now?
James Gunn, james Gunn.
If James Gunn was to take MattReeves stuff and bring it into

(20:36):
his own, I would not hate that.
But I don't think he's going todo it.
But I wouldn't hate it.

Speaker 1 (20:41):
Hate that, but I don't think he's going to do it,
but I wouldn't hate it.
I wouldn't mind either way, aslong as it just keeps coming out
.
I don't care who is theshowrunner for it, as long as
Matt Reeves and this vision ofBatman is still moving forward,
because it's a grungy Batman.

Speaker 2 (20:56):
Yeah, but I think James Gunn is searching for a
new Batman.
Not that one and I think itwill eventually is searching for
a new Batman not that one, andthen I think it will eventually
kill Matt Reeves' world, yeah,or at least it'll sort of
discontinue.
Well, because realistically theycan't keep.
If James Gunn's going to do aBatman, they can't keep doing it

(21:17):
, because then that's too it'slike Disney doing Spider-Man.
Before Sony didn't have rightsanymore, yeah, so if James Gunn
is trying to create thisuniverse, he can't have it
outside Batman.
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (21:34):
I hope it continues because, yeah, I think this is
the best version of Batman thatI've just like, holistically as
a universe, that I've everwatched.
Nothing against the Nolantrilogy, which stands alone as
pretty much like a perfectBatman story, but this is like
if you're reading comics fromlike 2000 onwards of Batman,

(21:57):
this is pretty much how it wasrepresented.
It was grungy, it was dark, itwas gritty, there was gang wars
everywhere and it always begsthe question.
As I'm reading or watchingsomething based in gotham city,
I'm just like why are therestill people that live in this
place?
Why don't they just get, gettheir shit and leave?

Speaker 2 (22:11):
but nobody ever does.
Yeah, and the thing I loveabout it is it starts off from
the start and it shows himworking up before he gets fully
batsuited out, fully batmobiledout, it's.
It's.
It's like, um, if you'rewatching the um at the animated
movies the day one or year onesorry, year one batman's um

(22:34):
animated movies, which are dcanimated animated movies, shows
are just the best.

Speaker 1 (22:42):
Yeah, I, I, I love dc animated movies and shows the
network at the moment, the geekfreaks network that we're a part
of.
They are actually having adiscussion at the moment about
marvel or dc video games andthey are of the opinion that
marvel video games are fullytrouncing dc video games and at
this current point in time 2025,point of recording.

(23:03):
I would agree, but I think thatDC's history of video games in
the past you cannot deny suchclassics as the Arkham games or
the Injustice games.

Speaker 2 (23:16):
I was going to say, besides Injustice, which is a
fighting game, and then theArkham series, other than that
everything's pretty lackluster.
I mean, they came out with the, that family, what was it?

Speaker 1 (23:31):
called.
That was Gotham Knights.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
Gotham Knights yeah, they came out and I really liked
that and but I didn't reallyhave anyone else to play it with
, because you could also domultiplayer.

Speaker 1 (23:40):
I will play that with you, because I also liked that
and didn't have anyone to playit with.
Oh, who's your main?
Who's your main Nightwing?
Oh well, I'm Red Hood, so good,we can oh well, I'm Red Hood,
so all good, we can go.

Speaker 2 (23:51):
Good to go.
Nightwing's my favorite DCcharacter, yeah.

Speaker 1 (23:56):
Yeah, so I think that one had potential.
I didn't really like that.
It's hard to scale somethingback like that when it's
obviously based on the Arkham IPthat everybody loves so much
and then they scale it back tonot an open world thing.
It's like leveled and I didn'treally like or appreciate that
part of it.
But I did like the fact thatyou had the four different bat
family people that you could useand play, as I don't know if

(24:19):
they were different enough forme to be like.
This is revolutionary andawesome.
I think that I had some verysimilar qualities, or at least
maybe I just played them thesame.
I don't know, but I I did enjoythat game, and I think that the
Marvel games that are comingout the Spider-Man ones, story
gameplay you can't.

Speaker 2 (24:42):
You can't dispose it.
Yeah, the Avengers game itwasn't like the greatest, but I
played that for weeks.
I really enjoyed that for weeks.
I really enjoyed that for awhile, while I was playing it,
at least.
And then when they put in somenew characters like Spider-Man
and Kate Bishop and stuff likethat, that was really good as

(25:05):
well.
And then Black Panther cameinto it as well.
I thought that was a reallygood game.
But I think, because it was theissue, I'm having moments
because I don't have time toplay games where, um, it's sort
of it's it's like a gotcha orlike a online game where you

(25:26):
have to, it's a slow grind.
I don't really have time forslow grind games.
They have to like grind up andget better gear and all that
kind of stuff.
It's sort of like I used tolove doing that kind of stuff
but yeah, I just can't, I justdon't have time for it now.
I'd rather just play astoryboard game where I have to
think like anywhere between 30to 60, 80 hours into the game
and get it finished.
That's more my style, and if itis a long game, I'd rather one

(25:54):
where I can just jump in and outof it without worrying too much
, whereas with these games, thelonger you take the jump into it
, the harder it is to catch upto what it's up to.

Speaker 1 (25:58):
Yeah, I think that's why games like, for example,
another Marvel title, MarvelRivals, is very popular.
It's 10 to 15 minutes have ashoot, have a bit of fun and
then jump out and you're alsoplaying as some of your very
most favoritist characters.
The one thing I have as aproblem with games like that is
I come home from work after ahard day at the office and then
I come on to have some funplaying a shooting game that I

(26:21):
love and I get annihilated byall the squeakers that just play
it all day.
Especially during schoolholidays and you're just like
you hear them on the mic and, yeah, it's just like.
This is demoralizing.
I will now leave, but yeah, inback to the penguin.
I think that um colin farrelldoes an amazing job in the lead
role.
He's completely lost in that inthat role I haven't finished it

(26:41):
yet but um also kristen malotti.
She plays sophia falcone.
She's just blowing me away, um,I hadn't seen her very much
before that, but she is likepulling out all the acting stops
for this one.
She plays unhinged so well, butshe also plays like sweet and
seductive and and also a verystrong leadership figure as well

(27:02):
in all the wrong ways, but yeah, she's.
She's also really, reallycoming through in this series
and I'd recommend anybody go andwatch it just for her alone.
But also really greatstorytelling so far and a great
representation of Batman.
So that is my recommendation.
Brash, what are yourecommending people?
Go and watch or play or read.

Speaker 2 (27:25):
Something that I just started watching.
I was like, oh my God, Ihaven't actually like I've been
watching, like rewatching stuffa lot, but I'm like I'm trying.
Haven't actually like I've beenwatching, like re-watching a
lot, but I'm like I'm trying tothink of what I've got.
I've got three things.
Three things I reckon peoplecould enjoy that I've been
watching recently and they'reall on Netflix.
So one the second season ofTies just came out.

(27:50):
Funny show.

Speaker 1 (27:52):
Anguilus is he's got a direct line to my funny bone.

Speaker 2 (27:55):
Oh, he is absolutely hilarious and I absolutely loved
it.
It was so great.
So I watched season one, seasontwo, terrific, terrific movie.
Oh show, sorry TV show, andthen the other two.
I've just started watchingGhosts, which is the American
well, american copied version ofGhosts from the UK, which has a

(28:19):
lot of the horrible historiesABC cast Mm-hmm, um, that was it
.
Yeah, so there's Americanversion um Ghosts.
And then the last one is abrand new show that's just come

(28:48):
out the man Inside.
I believe it's cool, a man onthe Inside.
Man on the Inside, yes, man onthe Inside, but yeah, that's got

(29:18):
Ted Danson in it.
Yeah, and stephanie beatricetoo, yep, yep, and um, yeah,
yeah, she's, yeah, she's the umdirector of the old folks home
in the show, and um, even oh, hebecomes a mole in the in the
old folks home in the nursinghome.
What a preface.
What's his name?

(29:38):
He's so underrated I wouldn'tsay underrated, but like he
plays not a very large role init, but it's the most funniest
role.
It's the Ted Danson's daughterin the show, her husband.
I'm struggling with what hisname is, but he is so funny.
Every scene that he is in justabsolutely just kills me.

(30:00):
Yes, those are the three ones IVery good.

Speaker 1 (30:03):
So that is definitely enough for you guys to sink
your teeth into.
Remember that we have anepisode coming out very soon on
the fandom portals podcastnetwork, all about Waterworld.
So this one actually wasrecommended for us by Frank and
Thomas from the ChallengeAccepted podcast.

well.
