Social media has significant negative effects on youth, including increased rates of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, often due to cyberbullying, exposure to unrealistic body images, and comparison to curated online lives. It can also lead to poor sleep habits, addiction, and a decline in physical activity due to overuse, which often involves spending more than three hours a day on these platforms. Conversely, social media can offer some benefits like enhanced communication, information sharing, and networking opportunities.

Negative effects

Mental health: Social media use is linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness.
Body image and self-esteem: Exposure to edited, "picture-perfect" images can lead to negative body image, body dissatisfaction, and low self-esteem.
Cyberbullying: Platforms can be a venue for online harassment, which is linked to mental health problems, including suicidal thoughts.
Addiction and behavior: The dopamine-releasing nature of social media can lead to compulsive use and addiction, and the developing adolescent brain is particularly sensitive to social rewards.
Sleep disruption: Spending excessive time on social media, especially late at night, disrupts sleep patterns.
Unrealistic expectations: It can create a distorted perception of reality and foster unrealistic views of other people's lives.

Positive effects
Communication and connection: It can help youth connect with others, build communities, and stay in touch.
Information and education: Social media can be a tool for information sharing and provide educational opportunities.
Networking: It can offer networking opportunities for young people.
Awareness: It can help individuals become more aware of certain topics and social issues.
