Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right.
So we're here with Joe MillsJoe is my co-MC for the Mile
High here about today And, asyou can imagine, it's going to
be a good time.
It's going to be a great time.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
It's going to be a
great future.
I really we were kind of wewere up in the air this whole
thing.
It's been four years sincewe've done our last one.
We don't remember any of ourpasswords to get into any of our
apps or software.
We're scrambling.
Do we know how to do thisanymore?
Are people going to come, arewe going to get sponsors, and
it's kind of all a good onetogether.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Yeah, it's really
great And it's cool to see the
speed style starting up And thatman is working.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Yeah, adam's a pro.
So Adam is actually ourtwo-time.
He's the only person who's everwon this event.
Oh, really, yeah, i believewe've done it twice before.
We had the full fivecompetitors, i think both
previous times, and he took thecrown both times.
So I got to say I like hischances today.
Yeah, his is pretty good.
It would be a shocking upset ifhe were to not win first place
(01:04):
in this particular category.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Yeah, no, he's great,
He's scared off all the
competition, exactly.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
I love how the back
lighting also highlights the
spritzing of the God's greatfood, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Yeah, well, i think
the and if you're listening to
this, chances are you have somesort of play share.
But just in case you know, it'samazing to see just how many
hair products that we beardedover like to use.
All about the products.
We have probably just as manyhair styling products as most
ladies do.
So you just got back fromWorlds.
(01:38):
How'd that go?
Speaker 3 (01:39):
I did.
Worlds was great.
It was a lot of fun.
It was my first Europeancompetition that I actually made
it to, So yeah, it was a lot offun.
Birdhouse in Bavaria, right onthe border of Austria I slept
with medieval town, the castleand stuff Made lots of new
friends.
Hans, Ulf, Lucas, Philip, lotsof good European new friends.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Showbiz in Europe.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Exactly.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah, ulf.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
Ulf Hans.
Hans did not get my die hardreference.
I was like ah, ah ah.
Didn't, went right over hishead.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
So did anything stand
out at the Worlds for fear?
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Stand out.
Lots of good guys won Lots ofgood guys and girls won People I
knew.
Lots of good places for someAmerican friends of mine.
Patrick Dawson finally tookfirst place.
The goatee took down AaronJohnson.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
After five tries I
think it was Upset of the
sanctuary, yeah it was fantasticAnd I think the most
interesting people that they maynot know is that a woman won
Best in Show.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Yes, oh, they had
Best in Show for the women in
the Best in Show overall And,shocker at, german won Best in
Show.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
What Right now?
I'm probably.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
No way Fantastic.
I mean, you can't argue when itcomes to Best in Show,
everybody up there.
you're like I don't know who'sfine.
I mean you're seeing alleverybody up on the stage at the
same time.
You're like I don't know, maybeI don't know, you pick a couple
and it's just, it's a toss,yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
And you don't want to
be a judge for one of those
competitions.
No Amazing face layer allaround.
Mcing is where it's at.
That's right.
How many competitors were atWorlds?
Speaker 3 (03:16):
this year, do you
know?
I think 300 somebody, i think Iwas there like.
So my category was the firstday and it was maybe 175.
And so they registered morepeople following day, so I'm
pretty sure it was over 300.
That's a good turnout.
Sure is Janom.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
I'm assuming most of
them did not come from Germany.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
No, oh, yeah, yeah,
plenty, like lots of Americans,
lots of other Europeans as wellIceland, lots of Brits, lots of
French, few Italians here andthere.
One Santa came all the way fromBrazil, But everybody Jeremy
came all the way from Alaska.
He got third place in the bigbeer category.
(03:56):
So that was nice, yeah, yeah,so it was a lot of good, a lot
of good American Lechrons.
Exactly, we swept the USA,swept the natural mustache
category, nice.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
Yeah, it was our
first time We know how to rock
the mustaches, that's for sure.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
We sure do.
But yeah, it's really.
I'm really glad you guys areout here today.
It's going to be fun.
We're going to be popping indoing little many interviews
here and there.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Yeah, it's going to
be great.
We're going to have, hopefully,as many people as we can Come
over and say hello.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
Yeah, once Adam gets
done with his speed style, have
him come over here and do alittle interview and see the
results.
Oh, mario's here, and Grizzlythe rodeo clown, i don't know.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
So for those, of you
who are facial hair
officiatonados and need anexcuse to travel.
beard and mustache competitionsare where it at.
If you can't convince yoursignificant other that you need
to go to Germany, it's the worldcompetition.
Oh, look what happens to youhere this week.
Right, yeah, you want to go toNew Zealand, although, next, so
World's 2025, pittsburgh, Ohnice Home soil, Home soil yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Not.
I mean, it's not going toGermany or anything like that,
But here at Pittsburgh is nicewhatever.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
I've never been to
Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
I am curious.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
what is the deal with
yinns?
Are you familiar with this Yins?
They say yinns, It's like y'all.
Speaker 6 (05:14):
I have never heard of
it.
This is a real thing.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
It doesn't seem to
make any sense if you're not
from there.
But they're like hey, what areyinns up to today?
What are?
Speaker 1 (05:22):
yinns up to.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
It's a real thing.
Prove me wrong, i don't know.
Right in that, right in that.
Call this number below withyour tips and with your hatred
for us for ripping on Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Yeah, no, I mean if
you're from Pittsburgh, if
you're listening to this, yeah, comment below.
We'd love to know all aboutyinns.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Yeah, is it real?
I don't.
I feel like it's a joke thatpeople play on you when you're
not from Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah, they're very
well played.
Tell me if it's real.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
I don't ever see it
on Pittsburgh Steelers games
when they happen to cross mypath.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
So I don't know I
can't say either way, yeah,
please, yeah if you're out there, if you're from the Pittsburgh
area and you know about this, let us know, because we would
love to hear, but.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Pittsburgh 2025,
Detroit 2024 is the great
American bearded mustachechampionships.
That's our continental US,Canada, Mexico championships.
That's going to be a lot of fun.
The British city boys can behosting that one.
Yes.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
And then, november of
this year, daytona Beach,
daytona.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Beach.
yes, Beard Team USA Nationals.
That's going to be a fun one.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Yeah, there's a lot
going on.
And again, if you're listeningand you're like, well, that's
great, but I don't want totravel or I can't get there.
beardcalendarcom was literallyevery bearded mustache
competition that you can find.
They, as Joe said before, theyliterally scour the internet
looking for bearded mustachecompetitions.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Yeah, like the
smallest little thing that ends
up on there.
So, yeah, it's a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Yeah, definitely
check it out.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
What do you?
Speaker 1 (06:45):
donate for
motorcycles.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
You know I'm not sure
.
So yeah, our competition.
today we're supporting theMotorcycle Relief Project, which
is a local, front-rangeColorado charity.
They take veterans and firstresponders with PTSD on
adventure motorcycle rides.
They do over 20 rides a year inColorado and Arizona.
I actually Mike, the guy whoruns it.
he's out on a ride now So hecan't actually be here, but
(07:11):
we'll be handing over a check tothem for as much money as we
possibly can.
We probably should have a linkor something.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
I don't know if we
can do that.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
We definitely can
take checks.
We can definitely can takedonations through Rocky Mountain
Gear to my status club.
We'd be happy to donate that onyour behalf.
Speaker 7 (07:28):
Absolutely.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
Or you can just go
right to.
I do believe it'smotorcyclereliefprojectorg.
I should double check that.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Yeah, just Google the
different Motorcycle Relief
Project, i'm sure it'll popright up And if you happen to
find a different charity thathas the similar name to it,
donate to that too.
All of these little charitiescan use all the help they can
get And that's probably one ofthe best parts of these beard
mustache competitions that mostpeople probably aren't aware of
is that all of thesecompetitions are raising money
(07:56):
for charity, so the competitorswin ribbons.
It's really When braggingrights and then all the money
that's raised what you just cameto spectate or compete all goes
to charity.
So it's definitely worth it ifyou, if you want to dip your toe
in the in the Beard andmustache competition world,
don't want to compete just yet,go as a spectator, see what it's
(08:17):
all about and you will Bedonated to a good cause at the
same time.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Yes, just to correct,
it is motorrelieforg,
motorrelieforg, motorrelieforg.
Yeah, they have actually somereally cool media videos
showcasing some of the rides andthings they do, and it's just
yeah, it's a really greatcharity.
We've met Mike.
Mike is the guy who runs theshow, so there's an excellent
beard.
I love seeing all these peopleI've never met and I'm like did
(08:42):
you just see this online?
Right, is it organic reach?
Speaker 1 (08:46):
on social media.
That's still a thing, right?
That would be great.
It's discover us, you know, andit's fun because the mile high
city is a big actual hair sink.
There is a lot of great hairout there and get perfect and we
love seeing it all over townand we try to get them here as
much as we can.
And You know, if it is thatthis year, it'll be next year.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Yeah, no it's.
I'm pleased with the turnout sofar.
We're just getting underway.
We've got about maybe 45minutes left to go on our speed
styler.
We got to make sure all of ourjudges get here all over the
place.
We got some Texans We'relooking for.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
I don't know I mean
the way he's working it.
I mean he might be done withtime to spare, exactly.
I mean this man has got a countfor science.
It's incredible to watch himfrom, even from across the room
here, seeing him just style thatbeard up and it's, it's already
amazing.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
Yeah, so we did have.
We have always done before andafter pictures with our speed
style in tests, so he alreadygot his portrait taken before he
started.
We'll get a full portrait withall this Full style on there and
we'll get all this fabulouscostumes.
We've got our buddy Gris fromWyoming.
He's dressed in full rodeoclown gear makeup.
We've got Super Mario all theway from Alabama.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
You know they have to
say real men, wear Like that,
make it look good in it.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Oh exactly If.
I any color I'm wearing is amasculine color.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
Exactly.
So, yes, so, uh, yeah.
So, joe, thank you again forComing on and talking to us
again.
We're always happy to have you.
We hope we'll have you backagain, you know, and I'm really
looking forward to the to thewitty banter.
And you guys will have up onstage here a little bit.
Yeah, it's gonna be fun, but Iguess it's Time to get back to
(10:29):
work and we will, like Kevin, take over with the interviews
right So.
Joe Mills, thank you for joiningus for the mile-high beard bow.
Check out the Rocky Mountainbeard and mustache club on
Instagram and Facebook.
Are we anywhere else?
Speaker 4 (10:45):
No that's about it.
I mean, those are the big ones.
I don't know.
We're all like.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
During the different
area and want to become a member
.
Not by some time.
It will have locations postedup on Facebook and Instagram.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Hey, if you're a 23
year old with a beard And you
want to be our tic-tac person?
We're hiring for social media, not hiring.
We are accepting Volunteer.
Yes, make our tic-tacs.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Nick is great.
Kevin.
Thank you guys coming out andsupporting and we'll be here
online.
It's gonna be a phone right on.
Thanks, buddy, right up.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
All right, nick did a
great job interviewing with Joe
Mills, but we got a reallyspecial guest here, and this is
Chris from Casper Wyoming, whowas a champion at the National
Bearded Mustache Championship inCasper back in November of last
year.
Speaker 7 (11:44):
Yeah, so How's it
going?
Griz Good man.
So National was actually myfirst event ever.
Yeah, I'd never been on stagebefore.
I do a lot of public stuff andradio stuff for other companies
in town And so I'm used to beingin front of big crowds and
things like that.
Absolutely.
I got super nervous at National.
(12:05):
It was apparently noticeablebecause people were coming up to
me like yo, dude, it's gonna beokay, chill out.
And we ended up winning it,which is cool.
Yeah, so it's.
You know, thanks to AdamSmalley over here and Joe and
these guys, it's a four hourdrive for me.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Right.
Speaker 7 (12:22):
And I was like I
gotta go, i gotta go, i gotta do
it again, I gotta do it again.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
Griz, we are so happy
that you're here, and I mean,
this place is filling up likecrazy.
Speaker 7 (12:31):
Look at all these
guys out.
Yeah, yeah, there's guys andgals.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Yeah, the Whiskers
will be here.
Speaker 7 (12:37):
You know, for me,
like I said, National is being
my first ever event.
Speaker 6 (12:43):
I didn't know what to
expect.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
Right.
Speaker 7 (12:45):
You know it was kind
of a shock and awe, but a little
bit of coolness.
I did the bar call.
I was a big part of that forthe community Right And
providing some form of afterhours entertainment for the
competitors that chose to makeit up to Casper.
And this is just my time tokind of enjoy the internet.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
Yeah Well, i can't
wait to see you compete up there
, because we'll be going liveand I'll be telling people about
Griz.
Speaker 7 (13:10):
Yeah, man, we're
super excited, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
So when the judges
get up there, man, you look
great.
today You look like you couldbe out there and shine in front
of your days, my friend.
Speaker 7 (13:18):
Yeah, well, i just
got done coming off of the CNFR
rodeo up in Casper, so bigcollege national final rodeo up
there, and it was a lot of fun.
But yeah, i love I've beengrowing.
It's kind of a funny story.
So at CNFR nationals I haven'tdone any trimming, except for
one mistake.
So, I picked up glass blowingabout three months ago And going
(13:44):
into it I knew I was kind of atrisk of things Yes, definitely.
And I made a mistake one day andI looked down and I was slowly
catching fire as it climbed.
But if you notice, it looks OK.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
It does.
Speaker 7 (13:57):
It looks big, you can
tell I put it out as fast as I
could, but it was a scary thing.
The wife says she can notice itin the mustache a little bit.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
But no, I can't.
Speaker 7 (14:06):
No, no, it's good,
it's good.
So I love the natural fullbeard category.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Is that what?
Speaker 7 (14:13):
you're competing in,
i am.
So I'm in the 4 to 12 inchnatural full beard, which for me
, it's cool because I growreally super high cheeks And so
it gives me an opportunity toreally showcase some of those
higher beards.
Absolutely.
But yeah, man, it's awesome.
I'm glad to be here.
Thanks for having us.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Well, we're happy
that you're here on the
Goodbeard Society on our podcast.
Like I said, we were up theresupporting everyone up in Casper
last year And we can't wait togo back there because the people
are so nice up there.
Speaker 7 (14:46):
And one of the things
that after Nationals we had a
big outreach of people wantingto get involved in a beard club
of some sort.
I was kind of centralized to bethat person to organize things,
but I'm just too stinking busy,so we're trying.
So my hairstylist up there I'mthe Devil's Cup Barber Shop,
shannon Neal, is a big beard-oAnd she loves the beard
(15:10):
community.
So we're hoping to get a groupof guys together out of Wyoming,
hopefully hoping to do anothercompetition up there And maybe
not something this size andraise some money to maybe get a
group of people to world nextyear or something like that.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
So yeah, But we're
excited to be supporting the
motorcycle review.
Speaker 7 (15:30):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
And, chris, i'm
telling you, man, i'll be up
there checking you out when thisthing's going.
Do it, man, and we're happythat you're here.
Speaker 7 (15:39):
Remember, man, it's
all about the beard, it's all
about the beard and the fun.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
That's it All right,
bro, thanks.
Thanks, sir.
Okay, look who I got here.
This is Dwight, And I gottatell you, when I saw Dwight I
thought of Jim Dorkin'simmediate name.
Jim was my partner at DrGoodbeard.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
And you could see the
picture here.
Oh yeah, And he passed in 2021for COVID.
But I saw you and he had thesame kind of beard and you're
competing and I'm waiting foryou.
Okay, thank you.
So tell us a little bit aboutyou're here from Denver and how
(16:25):
did you find out about us?
Speaker 4 (16:27):
Well, I've been doing
beard competitions for about
four or five years, I guess JoeMills is the one who originally
got me involved And I told himhe wanted me to come down and do
the show.
My beard used to be down in mybelt Right.
Speaker 7 (16:40):
And then over the
last few years I've gotten old.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
So it all fell out
And I was we were at a different
county fair or something Hewanted me to come down and do it
.
You know, I'm not into thewhole testosterone competition.
Speaker 4 (16:54):
He's like well,
that's not what it is at all,
right It's a bunch of hairy guyshanging out and having a good
time.
And that really is what it is,so I've enjoyed every time I've
hung out with these guys.
I even went to Worlds in 2017with these guys.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
Oh nice, because I
just got back from work.
Yeah, from Germany.
Yeah, i heard, i heard.
Yeah, i couldn't go to that one, but I can't compete like I
used to.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
I don't have a beard
like Joe's, you know, Or Scott
or those guys.
You know That's not me anymore.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
I know, I got to
compete in what I got.
That's what it is.
I appreciate it, thank you.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
And thanks for
supporting the motorcycle really
project.
Absolutely, yeah, absolutely.
And I wish you the best of luck.
And remember it's all about thebeard man.
It is.
Any facial hair is valid facialhair.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
You got it.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
That's right, so I'm
still good with this All right,
my friend Thank you.
Speaker 1 (17:41):
You bet It does All
right.
So we're sitting here with Jono.
Tell us a little bit aboutyourself.
Speaker 8 (17:50):
So my name's Jono.
We're here at the Mile Highbeard bout, which is super cool.
Last time this happened was in2019.
Way too long, yeah, way toolong.
But the cool part about that isI end up winning style mustache
in that competition.
I can see why, and then I endup winning Best in Show, so this
(18:11):
is pretty special competition.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
Yeah, this was oh.
Yeah, you did that, for you wonthe last mile high bout.
Speaker 8 (18:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (18:18):
And then you just win
Best in.
Speaker 8 (18:20):
Show for the
Nationals.
Speaker 6 (18:22):
For the Nationals of
the.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
Casper, so you're on
a streak man, yeah.
You're gonna go for athree-peat.
Speaker 8 (18:27):
We'll see what
happens.
I was making a cowboy hat.
I made this one And I waslighting when I'm firing Bert
off a little bit of my curls.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
Oh so.
Speaker 8 (18:37):
So I shaved off the
mustache, and this is only four
months, so.
Speaker 6 (18:41):
Really.
Speaker 8 (18:42):
It looks great Thanks
.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
I'm looking on
getting the curls.
Yeah, I get the curls back.
So I gotta ask, as someone whohas won so many of these
competitions with the mustacheHow did I do?
This is the first time thatI've attempted the curl of the
mustache with the beard.
Speaker 8 (18:58):
The curl is good.
It's actually quite impressivehow much volume you can have in
the middle actually With thecurls.
If your curls were a littlelonger your ends you could
really get in, like you know.
But one thing I always tellpeople is when curling your
mustache, people want to goforward with it, but then once
(19:20):
you get that, you kind of gethorns that go this way, Oh yeah.
But what I do is just alwaysroll it back, Okay, And try to
curl, like.
So what I do is when I get mybrush, I essentially do this and
I run it this way and blow dryit, Okay, And it helps set them
from going too far back this wayor this way.
Speaker 1 (19:40):
All right.
So do me a favor.
Tell those listeners who mightbe trying Out of their new stash
or attempting a curl Like whatis your process?
Like what?
is start the finish.
Speaker 8 (19:50):
Yeah.
So one of the main things I canreally have to do is, once you
get out of the shower, you havelike about a 10 to 15 minute
window before that hair is dryto really do something with it,
but you also want to assist itwith a blow dryer.
So you want to help it dry, butyou want to put it where you
want.
So one thing that I do is like, right after I get out of the
(20:12):
shower, i'll get the blow dryerand I'll grab a comb, i twist it
this way and then just hit itwith a little bit of heat Not
too much heat, okay, because youdon't want to fry your mustache
, right, and essentially whatyou can do is get a really good
shape without any product Andthen, once you have your shape,
you can put in product and thenhit it with the blow dryer again
(20:35):
.
So essentially, once you useproduct and put it in and then
put heat from the blow dryer, itwill lock up wherever it is.
Oh good guess.
So there's the pre-curl, whichgets it where it wants it, and
then there's the lock.
All right, and that's reallythe way that I usually do it.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
Excellent.
Do you have any big no-nos asfar as when it comes to curling
your eyelashes with the mustache?
Speaker 8 (21:01):
Yeah, i think some
people when they're curling
their mustache, sometimesthey'll just put like a straight
roller here no-transcript Forthe like, do the circle things.
But what I always try to do isjust like, use a barrel brush
that is metal, so when you hitit with heat it's actually
heating up the barrel like acurling iron.
(21:22):
Okay, I would say no, nose, howusually out.
The biggest no-no usually isnever trim it or cut it.
You know what I mean.
Like even today I was like, okay, should I cut off these
curls because I'm not there yetbut I want to look good, but
realistically that would step meback a week or two or three
(21:43):
from getting a close curl again.
So like the biggest thing withgrowing a mustache is just being
patient.
So I'm at four months.
Obviously I got a mustacheagain, but like I can't get a
closed curl and My last mustacheit really took me about two
solid years to get it in, likeWhere I was competing and like
(22:05):
where it was like on the money, you know.
So I guess the biggest thing isit's like Everybody's gonna
have a different mustacheAbsolutely, and work with what
you got and be patient with it.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
Yes, and I, i've
always believed that patience is
the key.
It's all about hurry up andwait.
You know I can't tell you howmany times I've looked in fear
and you know I've been like, oh,this isn't looked away.
I wanted to, i'm just gonnashave it all off.
And then I made a rule formyself that you know I You sleep
on it.
You know, if I feel the sameway in the morning, okay, go for
it.
And I've never had.
So.
Yeah, patience, i absolutelyagree, is the key to any
(22:40):
successful Yeah, you got a goodbeard.
Speaker 8 (22:44):
Going on, how long
you've been growing your beard
this one, this particular race.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
I had to cut it back
during COVID Masting.
Yes, so this, i think, is aboutthree years.
That's solid.
Thank you, sir.
Speaker 6 (22:54):
I appreciate that.
So are you competing today?
Speaker 1 (22:57):
So today I'm judging.
Are you judging, Yeah?
Speaker 8 (22:59):
what are you looking
for in?
Speaker 1 (23:00):
a competition winning
beard.
I'm not yeah.
Speaker 8 (23:03):
So So many people ask
me that especially people not
the beard must ask communitylike how do you judge right?
And I think there's likethere's like three key things.
I think one is a little bit ofstage presence How somebody can
just you know how they theirconfidence when they show you
know.
Stage presence is one thing.
(23:24):
To Is definitely like the waytheir mustache or beard looks,
because when you judge you canask people what products they
use and There'll be sometimesthat people will do things with
their beard and mustache and I'mjust like how did you do that?
Speaker 1 (23:45):
You know I like.
I want to learn how to do that.
Speaker 8 (23:46):
Yeah.
So like there is like a reallybig technical thing like I know,
when it's kind of like easy todo a mustache, or like when a
lot of times put in, or If theygot some rock and so good, i'm
like I don't even know how youdid this.
This is amazing.
Those are some of the thingsyou look at and and once
everybody's on stage It's kindof easier to to Judge.
(24:10):
You know, if you were to justjudge one person like really at
a time, it would be tough, butwhen everybody's together you
can kind of cross, analyze.
Yeah, pick up the stand outwinner and and most competitions
that I've been to.
When I did in judge Whoever, iwanted to at least be like the
(24:30):
top three, you know, or who won.
I get pretty dang Close likeall the time, like when I watch
competitions I'm like that guy'sgonna win, that guy's gonna win
.
Speaker 7 (24:40):
And Yeah.
Speaker 8 (24:42):
So I think being a
judge is super cool thing.
I I'm so humbled to be here.
I, You know, I shaved off mychampionship mustache and now
here I am And it's still good tobe back in the community.
Like people thought I was likegone for a minute, you know.
Speaker 1 (25:00):
Well, it's good to
have you back.
It's good to see you.
I know I've seen you a coupleof times.
I was actually in the same 2019competition with you nice for
the mile high fear about and Iended up winning my category but
lost.
So, which is okay, becausethat's that is incredible.
Speaker 6 (25:16):
Yeah, yeah, man I
appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
You sit down for a
minute and talking with us and
good luck touching all thecompetitors.
I know it's gonna be no easytask for you.
Speaker 8 (25:25):
Yeah, it's gonna be a
lot of fun.
There's a lot of good Mustachebeards here right now.
It's it's actually cool.
Do you have a particularcategory that?
Speaker 1 (25:35):
you're looking
forward to the most.
Speaker 8 (25:37):
To be honest with you
, every single mustache,
competition, the Creativemustache, creative beards as
like it's so awesome Yeah, it'samazing to see what they can
come up with.
Speaker 1 (25:50):
Yeah, i really
appreciate you stopping by.
Yeah, good luck with thejudging, and and And.
hopefully we'll talk to youagain.
Cool Sounds good, cheers Oh.
Speaker 2 (26:13):
Just got our first.
He's coming over here.
We're gonna move the camera andshow everybody.
Speaker 8 (26:49):

Speaker 5 (27:20):

Speaker 1 (27:22):
We're going to start
off with full pair freestyle.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
We're going to move
on to freestyle, so this is
going to begin.
Speaker 5 (27:36):
And we'll keep the
enforcers that the ending goes
on.
Speaker 2 (27:45):
We're announcing the
judges now All right, now that
we're done with the freestylewe're starting with the
freestyle mustache.
We got our first contestant upthere showing the judges.
Speaker 6 (28:09):
It's got incredible.
I don't know pencil thinmustache.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
It's really cool.
Oh, who's this?
Speaker 5 (28:20):
Hello, my name is.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
Austin.
Speaker 4 (28:21):
Carter.
Well, hey, austin, this is mygrandson.
He's helping us out today atthe beer.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
He was just in the
first cup of beer right now.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
I mean, I would win
if I got a beer.
Yeah, well, what do you thinkof this competition?
Austin, it's cool.
I've never been to a beercompetition.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
And let me just say
yeah, i've always been into
styles, cool, i mean yeah.
I've never seen like style beer, i know.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
And they're in a
street drug.
We're going to do a little bitof interviewing with some people
.
We're going to do a little bitof lighters.
We're going to do lighters Andwe're going to do some more of
our jobs.
Yeah, we've got our own.
we've got our own list of Goodjob to uh pencil most guys, well
I have a lot of great stuff.
Speaker 5 (29:09):
Oh, there was a list.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
OK, we're getting
ready for the Whiskorinas.
Whiskorinas We're going tostart competing here in a minute
And, uh, this should beinteresting.
It's always fun when these galsget up there and are creative,
just putting on, um, their fakebeers, and it's going to be
pretty cool beer And I'm surewe'll be able to give a little
(29:31):
talk with them soon enough afterthe competition And let's see
how it goes.
Ma, ma, ma ma.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
So I mean, this is
the first time you've had to do
here at the Mild Nive Beer.
Now this is your firstcompetition for any uh station
at your competition, right?
Speaker 5 (29:48):
Yeah, ever, ever,
just my first time.
How did you do?
Um, i think I did pretty good,i felt pretty good.
I think my beer looks prettygood, Your beer looks great.
Man, i appreciate it.
It's been going up for aboutthree years, so um ten years in
military And, uh, i finally getto grow some patience here.
Speaker 1 (30:06):
Decided to go all out
.
Well, absolutely, I love it.
Uh, so how did?
how did?
what were your firstimpressions of a, of a fish, at
your competition?
Speaker 5 (30:13):
So I've been looking
for some type of beer club or
something for actually a coupleof years And I met Scott at the
golf course And it's had to meethim because it's such a long
beard Oh my holy moly, peoplelike that do grow.
So it was, uh, it was prettycool And he gave one of my guys
uh, the beer pelt and uh mywife's like we got to go, we got
(30:36):
to meet the people.
You know long beard And youknow it's uh man, what a great
time tonight that I had.
So it's just amazing And I'lldo it every time.
Excellent, you're hooked now.
Oh, absolutely.
Speaker 1 (30:51):
Right, it takes.
It only takes once.
You meet all the great people.
You have the experience and youjust got to do it again and
again, absolutely.
Speaker 5 (30:57):
I just wish we could
go a little bit faster.
I'm a little jealous to getsome of the other competitors
that are, uh, fast, fast beardgrowers.
But man, what an awesome time.
Just a great group of people.
Speaker 1 (31:08):
Yes, yes, they are
some of the friendlies, people
that you will ever meet.
I mean you.
You meet somebody for the veryfirst time and it's like you've
known them for 20 years.
Yeah, it's so great.
Speaker 5 (31:18):
It definitely is zero
judgment on anybody or anything
that's here, no matter what yourepresent, or what you're doing
.
You know we just had a greattime and almost felt like a
family atmosphere, So it wasabsolutely amazing.
It had such a great time.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
Yeah, And now that
you've competed and found us,
you know you are absolutely apart of the facial hair family.
Speaker 5 (31:38):
You are a family, I
mean you are all of your family
members here, so it's amazing,it is truly amazing.
You get to meet a bunch ofpeople who don't judge you on
anything.
It's like, hey, come in kind ofmust-ask a beard.
Really, you can just have apersonal anything.
And if I had any, gone in andlet's have a drink or let's have
a beer, so to speak.
it doesn't matter the strength, but yeah, what an atmosphere,
(32:05):
what a great time.
So I really appreciate you guysso much for coming out here And
I definitely joined the Rock andMountain Beard, just As Love,
and I look forward to many moredays.
And I know the wife of us too.
You know You think she'llcompete next time She might.
(32:25):
I didn't tell her, she's mylittle schoolmate.
She had the little spots in theback, but I told her about
bringing it down to the floor,so she may be out here and have
a little facial hair herself.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Awesome, you do that
The husband wife.
You're a great wife, absolutely.
Speaker 5 (32:41):
Absolutely, Hey.
thank you so much for having usout here.
And you know just an amazingtime, Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (32:51):
And we're just so
glad that you found us And that
you could be part of thecommunity.
And did you have anyexpectations when you came into
this?
I expected to win.
Tell me all.
Speaker 5 (33:01):
We always have come
in hoping to win right, right, i
did help the shortest beard inmy category.
So once again, the guys andeverybody was amazing.
You know I'm in a couple ofArmy guys that are out here And
of course the one that had to,he was in the Army in 1986.
So just an amazing time gettingto meet people, getting to know
(33:23):
people you know a little bit oftheir background stuff, like
that.
It was just absolutelyincredible And I look forward to
seeing you next time on ourfacial page with all of you guys
, and whether it's coming outand competing or just having a
beard or going out and playinggolf.
(33:44):
Joe and Scott, they're workingon golf.
I might be the shortest beardthere too, but yeah, i might be
the best golfer, yeah.
Speaker 1 (33:52):
Would you like to
beard lengthen your makeup and
gulfing skills?
There you go, i don't know.
Yeah, it's so funny with these.
You know, you get used to somany compliments and comments
about your beard And you're like, yeah, i can do it, i can do
great.
Speaker 5 (34:06):
And then you walk
into the room and you're like oh
no, I guys like to go be withhis beard longer than mine.
Speaker 1 (34:13):
He is Yeah, right,
Yeah, it's definitely.
it's very interesting.
It's a very different chain foryou.
So you used to everybodynoticing your beard.
Speaker 5 (34:22):
You walk in and
you're like oh, i'm just another
guy with a beard, so it isdifferent, because I'll always
have so many differentbackgrounds, so many different
personalities.
Speaker 1 (34:31):
So you know, maybe
I'm a little louder than most,
but, man, i had a great time,i'm glad that you had fun and
I'm glad that you made it outAnd I'm so glad that you're now
part of the, you know, thefacial hair community And you
know we look forward to seeingyou again and again.
I'm sure you're going to be,you're going to be back and the
name is going to be known.
(34:52):
It's a great looking beard.
I love coloring a bit.
I, like you, know that thestrength is getting out in the
middle.
I'm starting to get a littlebit, you know, down here I'm
really hoping that I get thatgood looking stripe.
Speaker 5 (35:03):
Someday we'll all be
like Joe, right, right.
Speaker 4 (35:07):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (35:10):
Yeah, i really
appreciate you taking time to
sit down and chat with me andgive me kind of your first
impressions of, you know, thethe, the face of hair
competition.
We're all going to be a lot ofthose listeners, you know, have
facial hair but it may havenever entered a competition, so
it's really good for them, ithink, to hear somebody's first
impressions of one of these.
So, if you, if you have, um,now that you have some
(35:32):
experience, any words of wisdomor advice for the listeners who
may have ever entered, orconsidering what would you say
to them?
Speaker 5 (35:40):
I would say you know,
if you're starting to grow a
facial hair, obviously let itgrow.
You see Nick's long andbeautiful.
Um, hey, come on out.
There's so many differentcategories.
You don't have to have a 27inch beard, maybe, like Joe um,
to come out and compete.
There's a lot of guys.
hey, if you have a mustache, get them ready.
(36:01):
boys, i mean, just come on outand uh let it ride, if anything,
come out and have a good oldtime.
This, i think that's thebiggest thing that we do here is
hear them laugh and, you know, have a couple drinks and you
know get a good time with yourbeard.
Speaker 6 (36:18):
Yeah, absolutely So
come on out.
Speaker 5 (36:20):
It's no matter the
length of your beard or mustache
, come on out and hang out withus.
We're we're a good bunch.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
I agree.
Thank you so much.
I really appreciate you takingtime to sit down and chat with
us.
Speaker 5 (36:33):
Thanks, it was great
to see you tonight.
I really appreciate it.
Yeah, you bet.
Speaker 1 (36:41):
So I'm here with Bill
, and Bill is the first time
that I've been to the RockyMountain beard mustache
competition and just facial haircompetitions together.
Not only did he take firstplace in his category, he took
it all home winning fest andshow Bill how do you feel, man?
It's great.
Tell us about your experience.
What do you think?
Well, as I said, earlier.
(37:02):
I'm a little shocked because Icame out here just to meet
people and see how people withfacial hair work.
I had no idea how people weregoing to be here.
Speaker 4 (37:18):
I was just shocked.
Speaker 2 (37:27):
Just show up, for
that was fantastic, but then
when the best Joe was like thisis crazy.
Speaker 1 (37:34):
I'm in shock, crazy.
So How did you find out aboutthe Mild Head Gear Cows or a
future competition?
My daughter found it and shesaid hey, dad, you got to go.
It's like, well, if you go withMild Head Gear Cows, we both
came out here and showed up andit was fantastic, really good,
(37:59):
and did you have anyexpectations, or you know, when
it came to the competition, before you showed up, when I
walked in the door, i was like, whoa, a lot of fantastic gear,
mustaches, and like when Isigned up, i just signed up to
go.
(38:19):
And then I was like, well, ishould probably compete, what
the hell?
And then when I came in thedoor, it's like, okay, yeah, no
way, all these awesome gear, that's no way would I ever win.
So I just like you know what?
I came here to see the peopleand see what they were like And
(38:43):
it is a fantastic looking gear.
Do you get compliments on itregularly?
Yeah, but I didn't.
You don't know what you don'tknow.
So I mean, it's just, it'scrazy that I showed up here and
somehow it's different Somehowit's somebody likes it, it's
(39:04):
great, it just feels good.
Yeah, thanks.
I'm so glad that you made itout and I'm so glad that you're
part of the Fish and the Earthcommunity and you know family,
because you know, all of thesepeople are just like family.
You know you introduce yourselfto somebody who takes me there
here and you can talk to themlike you've known for 20 years.
Oh yeah, i've made a lot offriends tonight and it's just
(39:29):
great.
I don't know what I expected, but it was certainly way up the
top for expectations, so a goodexperience.
Speaker 6 (39:39):
Are you hooked?
Speaker 1 (39:40):
Oh yeah.
Yeah, that'll be the nextmeeting.
Yeah, I'm into it now.
I'm going to keep growing.
So you think maybe we, sinceyour daughter, hope you find it
easy to get her to compete nexttime in the Wistoryna category.
Most definitely.
Speaker 5 (39:57):
She was so ready to
do it this time, but not all the
time to prepare.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
Still got them to be
the next time.
I would look forward to seeingthat this year.
And talk to yourself.
Speaker 2 (40:06):
Come up with
something amazing.
Speaker 1 (40:09):
Oh yeah, Great Well,
Phil, thank you so much.
Congratulations on not onlytaking first place in your
category, but coming out for thevery first competition of your
bearded facial hair competitioncareer and taking it all in.
Phil, thank you, You're verywelcome.
Thank you so much for takingthe time to sit down and talk
with us and I would look forwardto seeing you in the future.
(40:30):
Yeah, me too, Thank you butthank you.
So I'm here with one of only twoof the Wistorynas to show up
with my high beard about thisevening.
This is Zoe.
Zoe, tell everybody, particularly the ladies who
might be listening, how you gotinto the facial hair competition
(40:52):
.
Speaker 6 (40:54):
Probably like a lot
of Wistorynas.
it's because of my husband Andthis particular competition.
the charity was the MotorcycleRelief Project, which is very
close to the GS Girls hearts andI'm a GS girl.
I suggested the charity to theclub and then a couple of days
(41:16):
ago I was like I probably shouldbe a Wistoryna since my
competitive debut And I'm notsure if I'll ever do this again,
but I feel like if any time, now would be the best time.
Speaker 1 (41:33):
And you took first
place in your category right.
Speaker 3 (41:35):
I did.
Speaker 1 (41:36):
So first time out,
first place, so you can go out
on top if you decide not to doit again.
Speaker 6 (41:41):
That would be true.
Speaker 1 (41:43):
Did you enjoy it?
What was the experience likefor you?
Speaker 6 (41:48):
It's about what I
would expect it to be, because
I've been to a couple of these, but I do have to say it's more
interesting as a competitor thanit is to a spectator, for sure.
Speaker 1 (41:59):
And was that how you
decided to compete?
Like, have you been to enoughof these?
you know?
like, screw it, I'm sick ofwatching.
Speaker 6 (42:04):
No.
So how long did it take you tocreate your beer?
It took about 10 hours.
I started yesterday.
I started playing around withthe concept and then finished up
(42:26):
today.
Speaker 1 (42:29):
And that's awesome.
It's amazing to hear you knowwhether it takes three hours, 10
hours, to care about ladies'news, 150 hours putting together
their beer.
Would you ever considerspending more time building one
now, or is that about the limit?
Speaker 6 (42:46):
Potentially I could
spend more time, but I'm kind of
a last minute person so therewould be a limited amount of
time that I could be able tomake a crowd of beer.
Speaker 1 (42:57):
Percassination paid
off this time.
Speaker 6 (43:00):
Well, i made polymer
clay earrings and so the skills
that I had to be inspired, so itwasn't like I was learning a
new medium to make this beer, which I'm sure made it
infinitely easier.
Speaker 1 (43:12):
So if you had any
words, that was the advice for
ladies who might be listeningthat might be interested in
competing in the Whisper Mediacategory, what would that be?
Speaker 6 (43:24):
Probably to just do
it.
Just do it.
Yeah, like you know, thinkabout something that interests
you.
I think I started with thetheme.
I was thinking I didn't want tobuy a lot of stuff so I was
like, what do I already have?
And also, i'm making thisdecision.
(43:45):
I'm very close to the line, so Idon't have tons of time to be
putting together, going to be anelaborate And I was like,
alright, i'm going to do pastselves, because I think some
people maybe not all people, butsome people have a bunch of
wardrobe components andmiscellaneous crap we collected
over the years And I was like itwould be fun just to shop in my
(44:09):
own closet and pull things outthat I haven't worn for a really
long time.
And so I got this like 80s to90s matchup things that I have
before since I was in highschool, and then I just made a
beer to match that outfit.
Speaker 1 (44:25):
Very nice And you
pulled off the look.
Well, It looks great And itmade off.
Just you won your category.
Speaker 6 (44:32):
It did.
So, my surprise, maybe noteveryone else.
Speaker 1 (44:39):
Well, congratulations
from them And I really
appreciate you taking a coupleof minutes to sit down and chat
with us.
And again, congratulations, andI'm sure we'll see you here,
thank you.
Thank you.
Speaker 6 (44:52):
Nothing else for the
next meeting right, alright,
well, thank you.
