(00:00):
And welcome in This is the Heartof Pittsburgh podcast. I'm your host Johnny
Hartwell special guest in studio, oldfriend Bill Dacy. How are you,
sir? I am doing great,Johnny? How are you? Singer?
Songwriter? But one thing that Iknow that maybe people may not know is
you're also the organizer for the summerconcerts for Alleghany County. So tell us
everything we need to know. Okay, there, It's a free summer series

(00:23):
that we've been doing for probably closeto forty years. It's funny. The
exact origin date is kind of mysterious, but I think the late seventies the
Symphonies started playing at Heartwood Acres andthat's kind of where it began. But
it's a it's a free series forevery Friday night at the South Park Amphitheater,
which is kind of right across fromthe South Park Fairgrounds for any of

(00:43):
you familiar with that, and thenSunday nights at the Heartwood Acres Amphitheater,
and all the shows are free,as I mentioned, and they all start
at seven thirty. It's just anamazing another example of why Alleghany County in
Pittsburgh, you know, just justso such a great place to live.
There's so much, so much incrediblefree art and entertainment that we have at

(01:03):
our fingertips. Well, it isa local event, but you get some
national acts. In fact, youhave something really special coming up tomorrow night.
The band War is going to bein town and this is a free
show. This is a free showand it's yeah, I'm so excited for
it. And it's a great exampleof what we do. We every summer

(01:25):
we'll have a few biggies like War, but we'll always try to feature some
local talent too. So there's agreat local band called Check your Bucket who
are going to open the show. But yeah, so that's amazing. So
just to give you a few morelittle pointers about the series, it's just
super easy, so don't be intimateif you've never gone to this these concerts.
It's like parking is easy. Everything'seasy about it. And you have

(01:46):
food trucks and you have food foodtrucks, beer and wine. You can
bring chairs and blankets and things likethat. You can bring coolers and things.
We're not super rigid about things likethat, and it's um, it's
just a great family and Bonnie Divergoes to every shows. He brings her
dog, so you oh for sure, yeah, friendly, yeah, And
I see Bonnie there on many Sundaynights. All right, So next weekend

(02:07):
it's see you with the show tothe Dazz band. That is awesome.
That is awesome. And the funpart for me is the guy who books
the shows is to kind of likeI always have to kind of verify.
I'll look at a lot of videoof recent performances from the bands to just
sort of see are they are theystill do they still have it? And

(02:29):
the Dads bands still has it?They sound great, so does war I
mean, and every everything we bookedstill is sounding great. But if somebody
wants more information on these shows, where what's what's the website Allegheny County dot
us slash summer. But you hada fantastic show last week, Yes we
did, and I'm still kind ofstill kind of lit up by it was

(02:49):
like one of my favorites of myI've been this is my thirteenth summer booking
these shows, and it was oneof my one of my favorite nights so
far just as a person hearing music. It was a country icon named Marty
Stewart who has his bands called theFabulous Superlatives, and that's properly named because
they are the best musicians and singersand just everything. And they traded instruments

(03:14):
and they just all sang different songsand it was like kind of a hooting
nanny. But Marty Stewart is justas legit and authentic and amazing of a
legendary country artist as there is perfectlyquaff Terror. Oh he's amazing. Yeah,
I know. I was there superearly in the day and I thought
he was at at the hotel andI just turned around and he's just like
walking around backstage, Marty Stewart, and I was like, ah, I

(03:35):
was just so it's just so Thrillingsopened up too, and Joker Sky and
that's a good good example too ofwhat we try to do, just have
feature showcase the amazing local talent thatwe have. And there's nothing more amazing
than Joker or Tomorrow Night. Nextweek we got dazz Band and then coming
up on let's see here on aJuly twenty third, Pitching the Tan.

(04:00):
So you get a variety of musiceach and every week, yes, And
that is my mandate every summer,is to just try to provide something for
everybody. And uh yeah, sucha good example the variety just these these
few weeks. But yeah, theyfits in the Tantrums was kind of a
gap they needed. Um, theywere looking for something for routing or something,
you know, just I just kindof lucked out. Their agent called

(04:21):
to see about it, and man, we win. Coming up on the
twenty eighth at South Park, it'sthe band Fastball. If you're a fan
of music from the nineties. Igot to meet them and hang out with
them, and they are a terrifichang and it's good to see that they're
still active and still coming back toPittsburgh. That's awesome, I know.

(04:44):
And again another great local band,Tiny Wars, is opening for that show,
so that'll be great. Yeah.So this is especially great flurry of
weekend shows. We got keep inmind all these concerts are free. They
begin at seven thirty. They foodtrucks, they've had you have, you
know, beer and wine, andit's rain or shine. Oh yeah,
it's Rainer's not like a good exampleof Marty Stewart the other day was kind

(05:10):
of if you know, kind ofshake you weather hard to tell, but
but maybe four thousand people came andthey were right to come. We'll always
we'll always put on a show.We never we never canceled. Only lightning
would would delay it or mess withit at all. All Right, we
talked about war. That's that's tomorrownight, correct and which which your location
is? That's a heartwoind acres Amphitheater. And then you have uh fits in

(05:30):
the tantrums. You've got Das Band, Das Band and Ball any other particular
shows that you you really don't youwant people not to miss? Uh,
well, every every week. Ifeel that way, Johnny, And I'm
not I'm not kidding, but theuh, I'd say highlights for me will
be um Like, there's a greatguy named Jadie McPherson at south Park.
His band is actually backing Robert Plantthis summer, and uh they're gonna come

(05:54):
play at south Park. But Jad'sa great artist in his own right,
so that'll be great. Edwin McCainis a big brit and he has a
pretty good opening act. Now thecase is being carried, but the woman
is true? Is that guy? That guy? And that was my favorite

(06:16):
song from the one of the bestCDs I've ever So you're gonna be You're
actually performing this year. I'm gonnaope, yeah, just uh, I
don't pay myself just so everyone knows. But yeah, I'm gonna open up
because Edwin and I are both kindof like nineties. Yeah, that'll be
a fun one. And then,of course a good thing to mention is
like the Pittsburgh Ballets at Heartwood onAugust thirtieth, August twentieth, I'm sorry,

(06:39):
And every summer we also highlight thegreat arts institutions in Pittsburgh like the
symphony and the opera and the balletand things. So that's another coming out.
Yeah, so it's a that's agood, good aspect of And then
oh, one last thing is thatwe have a great jazz artist named John
Scofield. For all you could musicguitar lovers, he's just a genius.
And so then you're going to endthe summer with a band. If you're

(07:02):
a fan of three WS, you'llknow this song, Men Without a Hat
Safety Dance. Yes, Heartwood Acres, September three, all right, So
if anybody wants the lineup, it'sAllegheny County dot US slash Summer. The
shows are absolutely free. Well, actually, that last one, the Men

(07:25):
Without Hats, is there's a suggesteddonation. That's one where we're raising some
money for the Department of Human Services. Just just suggested. You can still
get in for free, but it'sbut that's the one exception. But you
also have food trucks and trucks line. Yeah, it's just a great,
great, great free family event. All right, we only have about a
minute left. Is there anything wemissed it you think we ought to mention?

(07:46):
One little note is that sometimes HeartwoodAcres has two different entrances. You
can go visit the mansion, whichis beautiful to do, but that's not
the concert site that's on Saxonburg. But you want to go to Middle Road,
the Middle Road Gate and just justthe overview of the whole thing.
This reminder. Shows are at seventhirty. They're all free. Their reiginers
shine every week. Well, evenif you don't know what's happening, it's

(08:09):
going to be good. So it'sa it's just it's just a great way
to spend spend a night with yourfamily. And tomorrow night, tomorrow,
right, that's going to be aparty next weekend. Let's see you with
the show. And that's just twoof the shows that are coming this summer,
so once again the website if somebodywants a complete lineup of what's left

(08:31):
this summer, Allegheny County dot usslash summer bill. It's always good to
see. Thanks for having me,Johnny, I appreciate it. This has
been the heart of Pittsburgh Podcast.I'm your host, Johnny Hart well,
as always, thank you for listening.
