April (00:01):
You're listening to the Joyous Justice Podcast.
A weekly show hosted by AprilBaskin with Tracie Guy Decker.
In a complex world in whichsystemic oppression conditions
us to deny others and our ownhumanity, let's dedicate
ourselves to the pursuit andembodiment of wholeness, love,
and thriving in the world-- andin our own lives.

(00:23):
It's time to heal and flourishour way to a more joyously just
future.
Welcome back, friend.
I'm so glad you're here, or ifyou're here for the first time,
welcome.
I'm Kohenet April NicholeBaskin, and I have many things I

(00:44):
want to talk about.
In this episode, I want to talkabout onramps and piloting and
the ways we think about pacingand transition or perhaps more
frequently how we don't considerthis and this episode is a call

(01:05):
an invitation to Notice placesin our lives where we have
experienced some spacious, nourishing transition, or maybe
not spacious, but justGenerative and helpful
transition, and also had a roomto pilot and experiment and mess

(01:26):
up and try again because onramps and pilots.
I really love them.
Let's dive in.
So 2024 is approaching a newcalendar year.
I know, I know, various peoplehave different thoughts about

(01:48):
the new year and the Lack ofvalue of New Year's resolutions.
I am so not into group thinkthat is defeated or defeatist
and disempowered as thedescendant of multiple peoples
who couldn't accept negativecircumstances and had to imagine
new possibilities and continueto iterate and pilot new

(02:12):
strategies.
As I've talked about before withKohenet on the podcast, I really
love Milestone moments, mindfulmoments, uh, mindfulness bell,
periods in time, whether it'sbirthdays, new years.

(02:32):
the beginning of a month, thebeginning of a week, all these
different opportunities that inone way you could view as
opportunities of stress andpressure, or moments where
there's some kind of mindfulnessbell or another, whether it's
the dropping of the ball for theGregorian New Year, or eating

(02:54):
apples and honey at RoshHashanah, or blowing out
birthday candles.
I love these pattern interruptmoments, these moments.
That give us an opportunity.
Should we have the awareness andthe interest in taking it to
pause and drop into reflectiveintention.

(03:19):
And so I really like the NewYear in that way.
I don't like cultural dynamicsand systemic oppression and the
ways that those things getinternalized within us.
Chronic capitalism and overdriveas it gets internalized within
us and our organizations andcollective consciousness.

(03:40):
But I love to contradict thatand live on a different and
operate on a differentwavelength as much as possible
and in the places where itcontinues to show up, have
immense compassion and continueto do different practices that
help me uproot those things andwater the seeds and nourish the
roots of Perspectives that arein service of my highest dreams

(04:05):
of living in deep alignment withnature, with my ancestry, with
the things that matter to me.
And I see these holidays, placesof pause the new year as a
really great opportunity to dothat.
Have most of my New Year'sresolutions come.

(04:28):
To the full fruition and the waythat I envisioned them.
No, not necessarily, but has.
Have multiple New Year'sresolutions in different ways,
helped me to jumpstart differentpractices that helped me learn
new strategies and for severalweeks or a few months, start to
live into a new reality?
Hell yeah! You betcha they did!And that has value to me.

(04:55):
I'm here for it.
You don't have to be and that'sokay, but I want to make a case.
...particularly if you're not orwherever you are on the spectrum
for on ramps.
So I like spacious on ramps.
So I've been talking about thiswith the participants in my
Grounded and Growing program fora couple weeks now, at the
beginning of December, andperhaps maybe next year, I'll

(05:16):
start it around November.
So good.
To begin thinking about andanticipating the forthcoming new
year, not from a place ofpressure, but from a place of
spaciousness.
And it's a couple months away ornow by the time you're listening

(05:36):
to this episode.
If you're listening to it whenit comes out, The new year is
two weeks away and I have timeand space to reflect.
To think about what I want andnot necessarily have all the
answers, but to continue to chewon them if things aren't clear.
And if I am clear about certainthings I want, to start to pilot

(06:00):
them and play some internalmental games with myself or with
others.
Let's pretend it's the new yearand try on this sugar free diet,
or this low sugar diet, or WhichI'll come back to in a moment.
That's an anecdote that I wantedto share or this weekly planning
process.

(06:20):
I've started to re institute.
I was slacking, not really notdoing it.
I have it on my calendar, arecurring weekly meeting to do
weekly planning.
And oh, my goodness.
Oh, this year was tough.
The past two Jewish years werevery hard for me in a lot of

(06:41):
ways.
The Shemitah year wasmeaningful, but was rough.
And the year after that wasincredibly fruitful.
And I've profoundly deepened myrelationship with the Divine,
with the Divine Beloved, withcreator, with great spirit.
And also, I reached the limit ofmy full being's capacity and it

(07:07):
wasn't enough for a few monthsin this year.
And that was hard and dark anddifficult.
And I took some minor comfort inknowing that.
If and when I feel like thatmomentarily or for a period of
time, that means that I'm on theprecipice of growth, that I have

(07:29):
done the best that I could withall of the knowledge and
understanding I have, becauseI'm intense and really into life
and super dedicated like that.
I know not everybody's that way.
And my desires, my life, certaincircumstances needed more of me
in particular ways and exceededmy capacity.

(07:50):
And so when I feel that tensionit's quite painful and scary and
lonely.
It was rough.
It was rough.
So I forget exactly where I wasgoing.

(08:11):
Hashtag ADHD, but where it'sguiding me now is to say, so all
the more special is it that, oh,that's what I was saying that
I'm on the other side of a lotof learning, that I was given
opportunities.

(08:32):
That did align with my ultimategoals, but didn't align with
what my brain and my being wasready for at that moment.
But I've grown into it and I'mnow in a much stronger place
where I really was given a lotof opportunities to deepen my
relationship with trust in thedivine and even if I was

(08:53):
navigating circumstances thatfor me were extremely hard for
me.
And I stayed with it and Icontinued my different
practices.
And I also, in a number of ways, noticed that some of those
things in the moment wasn'tserving me and I let go and I
floated.
It's like a whole separateepisode and I began to kind of

(09:15):
float.
I didn't really feel like I wasfloating, or I guess I didn't
feel like I was in a boat.
I felt boatless, but I was onthe surface of the proverbial
ocean waters.
Oh yeah, I talked about thisbefore.
I already talked about this onan episode.
Oh, and it was so hard.

(09:35):
I could start crying rememberingthe pain of that.
And there was very little windand very little wind in my life.
And All I could really do wasfloat.
And from my perspective and mythinking about this may continue
to evolve, but my understandingof that now on the other side of

(09:57):
it, really glad to be on theother side of it, is that part
of that was deeply by design.
I was put into a position.
I felt like my guides and mydivine spiritual entourage.
Hashem, I have various words Iuse for the Divine Shekhinah,
the great source of all life andlove, and the different

(10:19):
manifestation that divinitycomes in the form of various
other members of my spiritualentourage, ancestors, angels,
guides others.
It seems to me like a specificjourney was crafted for me.
Because I would continue toiterate and work on things and I

(10:41):
was in a period where I justneeded to float.
So I guess that's anotherdimension of it that I've being
guided and or my subconsciousmind is guiding me to also
mention so on ramps, pilots andfloating and shift happening.

(11:02):
That's not from our directefforting, but that comes from
an attunement that can come whenwe release and allow.
Spirit to move and work withinus and other parts of our being
to move within us that isn'tnecessarily part of our

(11:22):
conscious waking consciousness.
And that energy, that experiencereally wanted to happen through
me over this past year.
And I'm on the other side of alot of it, which doesn't mean it
might not happen again and orthat it stopped.
It's still ongoing, but it's notas significant as it was.
Which is why I'm able to comeback on and record more
podcasts.

(11:44):
Because all of that was veryhard for me to access during
those months and convenientlythere weren't a lot of, there
were some, but not many demandson my time anyway.
So it was like I was reallybeing guided to just face
certain fears that were guidingme in ways so that I could

(12:05):
dissolve some of it and not havethat even subtly in the
background running.
My stream of consciousness tookme to a really intense place.
I'm just going to take a fewbreaths.

(12:26):
Maybe you can take them with meas I recenter.
So New Year's for me personallyI don't know about for you.

(12:46):
I'm excited for a new year now.
When years are great, I'mexcited to continue to build and
grow.
And when years have been trying,I appreciate, even if it's just
a construct, but an opportunityfor a restart.
And or a recommitment to thethings that matter to me and I

(13:08):
love having on ramps to Try outnew things to try different
things on I mentioned the lowsugar free program or Diet that
is something that is a practicethat has been hard for me to
maintain in different waysbecause of the context in which

(13:29):
I live but What I learned fromdoing this class, and I'll talk
about it in a moment, but when Ido substantially reduce my
sugar, life is better for me.
I don't have brain fog, my bloodsugar levels are even, my health

(13:49):
overall is better.
So I, a few years ago, saw an adfrom an Aussie woman, a white
Aussie Australian woman, who wasdoing a program.
She's since stopped doing it.
I'm blanking on her name rightnow, but I'm saying that because
maybe some of you did herprogram or are aware of it, or

(14:10):
maybe at some point she'll hearthis.
Hi, thank you so much.
You were so very helpful to me.
And she ran a program.
I can't even remember what it'scalled now.
I don't know if it was like quitsugar for 60 days or something
like that.
And in her marketing materialsfor it, what she wrote really

(14:32):
spoke to me.
She talked about things likesugar at times can really can
control or demand.
People move in particular waysand she likes being able to be
in the driver's seat and decidewhen she does and doesn't want
to eat sugar and that it clearedup her brain fog and and that

(14:58):
she likes not constantlywondering when she would get her
next hit of sugar.
And I think she said otherthings.
I can't remember it now.
It was almost 10 years ago andthat just really spoke to me.
I remembered when I was a littlekid and at times I would eat
lots of chocolate or which isfine at times.
It's fine.
But I would, I don't know.
It just, it resonated with me orthroughout my younger

(15:19):
professional years, often in theafternoon, I would crave sugar.
And I think I did this program.
I was doing this sugar free.
For 60 days program after I'dalready learned an insight about
that, which was that my when Iincreased my intake of raw and

(15:40):
or just like my whole food dietwhen I moved to a much more
whole food diet, which hadpretty much been raised on but
began juicing and eating lots ofsalads in the form of green
soups and doing different thingsthat My cravings for sugar went
away and it was cool for me tonotice from my own lived
experience like, Oh, I think mysugar cravings are actually

(16:00):
vitamin cravings that I'mmisunderstanding because of
corporate involvement in ourfood systems and their desire to
make money at all costs.
So adding lots of sugar to keepthings addictive, keep people
buying more and more.

(16:22):
I signed up for this program andI was very excited about it and
it was, and I was a littledisappointed when I signed up
because the start time was likethree or four weeks out from
when I registered, like she dida good job of creating like a
good amount of urgency.
So I signed up.
And then I saw that it wasn'tstarting for four weeks, and I
was initially a littlecrestfallen.
But then I thought I'm inspiredby what she's saying, and this

(16:44):
is going to be a huge transitionfor me, so I'm just going to
start doing it.
I did it for a few days, andthen on the weekend, I was
really craving French toast.
I was living in Cambridge,Massachusetts at the time, so I
went to my, one of my favoritejaunts, and had some delicious
French toast, and was bummedthat I didn't honor my new

(17:06):
agreement with myself.
But it was during the on ramp,so it was okay.
So I got to do a reset and tryagain, and then try again, and I
had a few different slip ups.
But by the time I got to thestart of the class, I felt more
ready.
I'd been paying more attention.
And I hadn't like particularlyoverly fixated on all the

(17:29):
specifics.
I was just generally trying todo as best I could and do
different things such that whenI actually did start in this
case, her course, and she haddifferent recommendations.
And she said for the first week,I think it was that we would
reduce all artificial sugar, butyou could still eat fruit.
And then after that week, shealso wanted us for six weeks of

(17:49):
the program to also not eatsweet fruits.
Right.
Oh, and and I was ready for itbecause I'd had this on ramp,
the space beforehand, where Ihad space to mess up and I
wasn't out of the loop becauseit was just extra space and free
time anyway.
So I just I really like these onramp periods of being able to

(18:12):
try on something and not make ittoo hard, but set a goal and
really like a kavannah, anintention and really try to be
in alignment with that thing.
And also just notice and payattention almost as though you
were like time tracking or foodtracking, or just kind of keep
track, do a pilot, anobservational pilot.

(18:34):
Where you have this on ramp andyou start piloting things and
notice, okay, when did you falloff and what was happening
during that time?
And because it's not as focusedon a specific, like you have to
do these things, it's moreabout, well, I actually don't
have to do this.
I could not do any of this and Icould just wait till the start
time, but I'm choosing to.
So it just, to me, when I dothat and I'd be happy to hear

(18:56):
from you at some point.
If you have other things thatare kind of like this, but it
takes a different form for you.
Because what I'm talking abouthere.
It has a little bit ofprinciple, but a lot of just
practice, right?
For me, there's some principleor some enduring insights about
the value of piloting and thevalue of transitions and
transitional on ramps that areincremental and help us build up

(19:22):
to where we want to be, right?
So I guess that's another way ofthinking about it, right?
If there's a gap of what we wantto do, if we have a goal of
something that we want toachieve or start working toward
I think often people don'taccount for the fact that they
need an on ramp just to get eveninto get even get on the path on
the right road toward that goal.

(19:42):
Like they're on a differentroad.
They need like the metaphor of ahighway on ramp.
They need an on ramp to get onto the highway.
That they want.
They can't, it's hard to just gothrough the brush, go off road
all of a sudden.
So don't go off road.
And instead experiment, eitherfind an on ramp or create an on
ramp.
And one of the ways that I like, one of the things I like to do

(20:05):
during that time is to pilot, right?
Which on ramp do I want?
What's feeling good?
What doesn't feel good?
How can I identify, as I movetoward this, the path of
greatest ease?
Or if I'm really going forsomething that's a little bit
difficult, how can I water seedsthat deeply affirm various

(20:25):
values and or attributes that Ihave within me that I maybe have
or haven't been paying attentionto?
But by cultivating my awarenessin those, it helps to bring my
strengths appreciatively to theforefront so that I can leverage
them and.
And begin to move in thedirection that I want, right?

(20:47):
And are there other ways that Icould take some time to look for
helpful resources, which attimes people do in the form of
programs, and that can be reallygreat, but but it's worthwhile
to take some time in the timethat you will be taking in the
future to actually do that thingto almost intellectually or
spiritually luxuriate.

(21:07):
And do some exploring and takesome time with different
materials and then try it on andmove out of the fear of, am I
going to be able to do it ornot?
But let's see, let's try it.
And if it doesn't work, ratherthan shaming ourselves, this is
a huge part, notice, this isn'tworking for me in this moment,
or perhaps or are there waysthat I can tweak it first and
reflect and fix it?

(21:29):
Figure out how I can rejigger itto get it to work for me, or
perhaps actually this isn'tspeaking to my needs right now
because I'm not able, it's,there's not enough of an on ramp
with this resource, or thistool, or this book, or it's not
interesting enough to help mebridge that difference, to help
me scale up to the level that Iwant to be, right, oh, I just,

(21:53):
oh, I just love this so much, there's so much to talk about
here around I'm really intoidentifying the path of greatest
ease, especially for biggerthings that we want, of often
we've been conditioned to takethe harder route.
But I like to set ouraspirations to the highest
levels that we can and thenleverage what's around us.

(22:16):
Leverage deep appreciativepractices.
Leverage.
Things that we might not beappreciating, or we might take
for granted, or might annoy us alittle bit, but if we leveraged
that thing that we can do thathas some ease involved for us,
it's not a permanent thing, butthat can help us move to the
next place, right?

(22:37):
And that's I'm getting soexcited.
And that's a whole other thing, just about the path of greatest
ease.
I should just dedicate a wholeepisode and class.
I could do like a whole miniclass on that.
Would you like that?
If you'd like that, write thatin the comments of the, if
you're watching the YouTubevideo or send me a message at
info at joyousjustice.

(22:58):
Anyway, so on ramps.
So I just, I really love theidea and love when I can do on
ramps and I would, I want toinvite myself and my
consciousness and my spiritguides.
I just want to put this out intothe ether.
Because I love when I findmyself doing an on ramp, like,
oh, yes and adding in somepiloting into that on ramping of

(23:20):
trying on things and seeing howit feels and seeing what I like
and seeing things that I kind oflike, but I don't exactly like
and how can I tweak it or howcan I tweak it.
Self coach myself.
How can I manage my mind?
How can I make friends with mymind about it?
How can I do some emotionalprocessing to identify?
What's at the root?
What's old?
That's coming up and what's oldemotion that I need to process

(23:45):
to clear the path and perhaps indoing all that I may find
actually the very nature of whatI'm going for.
I actually need to shift thegoal entirely and how great to
realize that Days and or weeksbefore we start in this effort
and just the whole setup of theeffort in general around New
Year's and also other things isI gotta get it right.

(24:06):
And just oh, just stop that likeChristian hegemonized concept of
these binary concepts of good, bad, of success, failure, like
it's so not life.
It's just not even.
I just see like mud or flowersthat are messy and crooked at

(24:27):
times and other times beautifuland it's all a process, just
that holistic nature.
Ah.
Yeah, so I really, I would liketo personally find more times.
Oh, that was another thing I wasgoing to say.
And if you're like, the thingthat you want to do, there's no

(24:49):
way you can really on ramp it orpilot it in the next.
Two weeks.
I would invite you to reconsiderthat and breathe into that and
try to look at that from otherangles.
And perhaps like you have thisreally big goal and perhaps you
could just micro on ramp it,which may actually be all you
need to start to move your wayinto an easier way into moving

(25:13):
intentionally toward that whichyou desire and being in greater
alignment with what you want andembodiment and deeper embodiment
of it.
Oh, yes.
And so that reminded me too.
So if January, seems too close, like it's just two weeks away,

(25:33):
then I invite you to pick adifferent target and use, have
an on ramp for an on ramp anddecide that your day is actually
going to be February 1st thatJanuary has so many different
things and people are hustlingand moving around and there's so
much stuff and you want to beable to navigate that Get
certain things taken care ofwith taxes if you have W 2s or

(25:54):
whatever those, whichever thoseones are called that you need to
issue like I do as a businessowner, different to different
consultants, that like you havethat space and that it's going
to be, and also you don't like, which I would agree with a lot
of the messaging around this isso tied to capitalism and
puritanical values and good badbinaries and all of this.

(26:16):
stuff and all this pressure,right?
So you might just be like, Iwant that to clear.
I want that noise to clear and Iwant this to be on my terms.
So actually my day is going tobe February.
or if you want to move intosomething bigger and you have a
body of work that you need todo, and if you're looking for
support around that body ofwork, Grounded and Growing is a
great place for that.

(26:39):
oUr program, my program Groundedand Growing you could choose for
those who are Jewish or thosewho are Christian or those who
are Muslim, you could pick likePassover, Easter, or Ramadan,
and decide that you're going todo several months and taking on

(26:59):
various pieces or even just onething where you're really going
to explore and go in deep aroundthat piece and engage in
spiritual exploration,nourishment, purification,
whatever thatification, verbation you are seeking is, or

(27:21):
it might be like sinking intobeing present with nothingness
and silence.
There's so many differentthings.
Then you can use.
This period for nothing and orjust to start to think about
what are some of the contoursthat you want for your on ramp?

(27:42):
What are ways that you want towater the seeds to set yourself
up for success to create anecosystem for success to help
support you and position youwell, oh, how radical is this?
What if you were like, really?
I want to launch.
Whatever, just personally orwithin your org or something

(28:05):
like that in 2025, in 2024 isgoing to be all about
positioning myself, creating anecosystem of success, which is
something I learned from a coachwhose material I used to follow
years ago when I was in college,Phil Humbert.
I hope I'm pronouncing his lastname correctly.

(28:30):
And nourishing myself andcreating playlists and engaging
in different practices that helpme embody and start to live into
and create this reality or thisexperience that I want to
actually actualize or step intoin 2025, in 2024.

(28:50):
Ooh, I like thinking about thisfor me.
That's exciting.
Ooh! My business and my life andmy family and my fitness.
What do I want to be doing in2025 that's going to be like so
fun and exciting and stretchzone?
And what can I be doing over thecoming year?

(29:11):
What are different practicesthat I can deepen, that I can
identify?
to start to weave into my lifeso that the ground is laid for
inevitable or highly likely highhigh predictability of 2025

(29:33):
being An absolutely outstandingyear, right?
Ooh, like what have I dedicatedmy whole year in different ways?
Some of the core things thatmatter to me around energetic
and mental agility and being ina very joyful place as often as
I can be.
And also continuing to maintainmy various trauma healing

(29:56):
practices and various pivotingand resiliency practices that
holds me.
When I'm navigating variouscircumstances and.
Temporarily lose touch with thatagility, but really work on
cultivating that in a deep andprofound way and thinking about
that rather than, am I achievingit now?
Am I not?

(30:17):
Of perhaps finding some way ofmeasuring it and tracking and
testing different things andseeing what really helps me
build the shocks of my emotionaland energetic car really builds
them up so I can hit almost anyroad bump and I'm absorbing it,
but it's not hitting my car.
There's space.
There's some space andabsorbency.

(30:39):
How am I keeping that energeticcup empty?
Yeah, I'm excited to think aboutthat.
So I'm here for on ramps andpiloting and then piloting
different things and not needingit to be perfect, but actually
just doing it purely for thepurpose of, well, wouldn't this
be fun if this is successful?

(30:59):
And also it may or may not be,but what can I learn from this?
I'm excited about it.
So cheers to this two week onramp into 2024.
May yours be sweet, whetheryou're doing specific activities
or just taking time to journaloccasionally, or reflect as
you're going on walks.

(31:20):
This can look like a lot ofdifferent things, and then if
it's not going well, also thinkokay how about I move it to,
especially since we're in thedead of winter, to, to set the
new goal of springtime.
Because that also is one of theJewish New Year's, Passover is
one of the Jewish New Year's.
And also for other traditions, find something around like a few

(31:41):
months out.
I'm excited about this.
Are you excited about this?
Feel free to let me know.
So I think that's it for todaywhat else did I want to say
here?
Oh, I wanted to let you knowthat I set a personal goal for
myself a couple weeks ago tocome up with some additional

(32:02):
podcast ideas, and I basicallycame up with a year's worth of
content over the course of theweek, like all these ideas kept
flooding through, which again isthat's a sign to me that
floating period has ended andI'm now in a place where I'm
back in the ship and Starting todirect it and the sail is
starting to pick up some winds.
And I'm able to chart out adetailed plan and also adjust as

(32:23):
the plan changes constantly.
But things are moving andshaking and and I'm ready to
talk about a number of thingsthat I've wanted to talk about
for years.
And in some ways that I dancedaround, like I was listening to
one of those Hanukkah episodes, the one that T'ruah.
Shared so thoughtfully and Inoticed at one point that I
talked about a concept, but Ididn't fully name it because I

(32:45):
was afraid to name it theconcept being that I don't
believe that there is inherentlya source of evil in our
universe.
And so I basically spoke aroundthat, but I didn't directly name
it and whether it's that ortopics relating to Israel
Palestine, there are a number ofissues that I spent four years

(33:06):
doing a lot of identityreclamation work and also
processing of deeplyinternalized terror.
That I now feel ready to talkabout these different things in
the ways and on the terms that Iwant to talk about them.
All of that to say please keeptuning in.
Please share these episodes asthey resonate with friends and
colleagues and family.

(33:28):
and let's continue to be incommunity together because we
have lots of interestingconversations to be had and I'm
excited to be in thosediscussions and in this ongoing
work of collective liberationwith you, collective liberation,
healing and love with you fromin terms of the macro level, all

(33:53):
the way down to sacred precious,You, who is both a singular
being and very much a part ofall that is.
And divine oneness andinterconnected with communities
and yeah, I'm just excited toplay in that multiplicity and
identify various insights andlessons and challenge ourselves

(34:15):
and dream big, beautiful, unapologetic, visionary dreams
of what we would love to see.
Much love.
Until next time.
