Chris Grainger (00:03):
Welcome to The Lion Within Us, a podcast
serving Christian men who arehungry to be the leaders God
intends you to be.
I'm your host, chris Granger.
Let's jump in.
All right, guys, it's funFriday time, and before we get
started, let's get into the word, okay?
So our scripture this week inthe book of Romans, chapter
eight, verse 17, says Now, if weare children, then we are heirs

(00:24):
heirs of God and co heirs withChrist.
If indeed we share in hissufferings and order that we may
also share in his glory Man.
I love that verse.
It speaks to me.
It's something that, guys, ithink we need to spend more time
understanding what's available.
When we surrender to theLordship of Christ, you become a

(00:46):
co heir, a royal priesthood.
You may be thinking it ain'tnothing wrong about me.
No, you're wrong.
You are wrong.
That's the lies of the evil one.
You, right now, once yousurrender to Jesus as your
savior, you are co heir ofChrist.
That should get you so fired upon this fun Friday.
I don't know what else I cansay.

(01:07):
I should just be a mic dropmoment.
We just won't grow any further.
But I know you want to hearsome tips and things like that,
so we will.
But seriously, guys, go checkthat spiritual kickoff episode
out.
I spent a lot of time on that,on that one to try to get help.
You see the power that existsthat he will give you if you
submit to him and you are hischild.
You may think that nobody canlove you.

(01:29):
I'm here to tell you that iswrong.
God loves you and he wants arelationship with you.
So open up and give him achance.
Now, if you missed theconversation with Parker from
Buck Commander man, that was afun one.
Did not see a few of thosethings coming for sure on his
testimony, Didn't realize thathe had the issue of pornography
that he talked about.
They're appreciative of himbeing open and honest about that

(01:51):
and just sharing that with youguys, because there's so many of
us out there that I know I hearfrom you guys a lot that are
struggling with stuff like that.
And you see guys like that whoare maybe they're crushing it.
They're running Buck Commander, they're hanging out.
Willie Robertson and LukeBryant and Jason Abdeen Oh sure,
this guy's got it all together.
That could be your attitude.
Totally get it.
Well, you heard.

(02:12):
No, it's not always cupcakesand rainbows, right, there's
some struggles.
He had to go through some thingsand that going through some
things helped him.
But look, he didn't go throughthose things alone.
He had strong Christian menthat were helping guide him,
pull him back, give him thatnudge he needed to know You know
what You headed down a bad path.

(02:32):
He even mentioned the fivefriend things.
You guys heard me talk aboutthat in the past too.
You're you're in that result offive people you spend the most
time with.
I'm just telling you, becareful, because if those, those
people, if they're pulling youfurther from God, they are going
to be successful.
I'm gonna say that again If thefive people you spend the most
time with are pulling youfurther and further from God,

(02:53):
they're gonna be successful.
You need to be surroundingyourself with those that are
pulling you closer to God, thatare challenging you to walk with
Him better, that arechallenging you to give up the
things that you know you need togive up in order to walk with
Him.
Okay, so really go back.
Listen to that conversation.
I learned so much from Parker.
Just so fine, fine young manhad to spend some time with him.

(03:15):
Crazy how we got to meet on theairplane when I was headed to
Louisiana and just have awonderful spirit-led
conversation at 30,000 feet, andthat led to this podcast, guys.
So, just again, hopefully youguys get a chance to listen to
that one.
I was, for sure, a fun one forme, and just the way God
orchestrated all that for thatto come to fruition.
Just to go to show you hisplans.

(03:36):
They're a lot better than ours,you know.
All.
Right now let's get into our funFriday tips.
Okay, so for our new listeners,we do a health, wealth and
self-tip each week.
Now, the health tip focuses onyour mind and your body.
The wealth tip is either gonnabe talking about careers or
finances, and self-tip isgenerally geared towards being
better husbands and better dads.

(03:57):
Okay, so our health tip thisweek is something that I've been
struggling with lately.
I want to just bring this up foryou guys to remember.
You can't outrun the fork.
Now, what I mean by that?
okay, i'm a big workout guy.
I work out every day of theweek.
There's no off days, seriously.
I mean even when I go to thekids camp.
I'm recording this right afterI finished my with my 11 year

(04:19):
old daughter her camp, i ranevery morning or I did a ruck
every morning.
There are some, so there are nooff days, but you cannot outrun
that fork.
Bad eating habits will beat outany progress you make in the gym
period.
It will.
So the first place you alwaysgotta get started when you start
thinking about how you can makean improvement, where you need

(04:40):
to start really tuning up, youneed to start thinking about
your nutrition first.
Okay, nutrition is everything.
Guys, if you put junk in,you're gonna get junk out.
We all know that, right?
So, seriously, don't go killingyourself at the gym for three
hours a day, or two hours a dayor whatever, and then you go on
and be bussed up a bag of Oreos, right?

(05:01):
Or you're eating a bunch ofprocessed food.
Now again, i'm preaching to thechoir here.
I know this is something Istruggle with myself, so I'm not
trying to tell you guys, i gotall this stuff figured out.
But I do know one thing If youare intentional about this, if
you're intentional about yourintake, you will have a bigger
impact on your goals.
And you also need to have somemicro goals, okay.

(05:22):
So don't feel like, hey, i justneed to lose 30 pounds.
No, let's break it down.
I need to lose 30 pounds bywind.
What are some steps I can takethis week is to move closer
towards that goal.
And if the 30 pound goal, that's a big, hairy, audacious
goal And it's cool to haveB-hags in our life okay, i
totally get that.
But we need to break thosegoals down, okay.
So just make sure youunderstand you can't outrun or

(05:44):
you can't out-exercise the fourOkay.
So really be intentional aboutthis And this is an area you
want to start focusing onInstead of trying to figure out
what workout plan I need to geton and get started with.
Start looking at what do I needto do with my plate every day
to start making a differencethere.
You get that fix first.
The workout stuff will be mucheasier, okay.

(06:07):
Now your wealth tip.
Kind of on the same theme.
I'm not sure I was on a foodkick for this podcast, but here
we are.
I want you to audit your foodbudget.
Think about that for a second.
Audit your food budget.
Take one month and dig intowhere every cent goes towards
food.
Now, this includes yourgroceries.
You're stopping by, you know aquick stop where a convenient

(06:30):
store gets some snacks, obviously eating out, lunches,
dinners, breakfast, whateverthat is.
Take all this information, gather it all, collect it, and
then I want you to sit back andreally spend some time to
understand the numbers And thensee what can be adjusted.
And here's the target for youCan you move that number down
10%?
You may not be able to, buthere's the thing to consider

(06:53):
with this Bulk shopping.
Look for some areas or someitems that you guys go through
on a consistent basis as afamily and try to figure out.
Can you do bulk purchases thatwill save you money?
Maybe you need to remove someitems from that list completely.
You know processed food, junkfood, potato chips, all the
things that we know we don'tneed to have that end up in
there.
Do you need to set a hard lineon that?

(07:15):
Okay, and even consideralternative sources.
And what does this mean?
Well, there's some food, fellas, that you can grow or shoot and
fill your freezer or yourrefrigerator yourself.
Okay, and think about this.
Sometimes we often just budgetfor food because we have to eat.
So we have to be good stewardsof this.

(07:37):
Okay, it's not just because wegot to eat.
Be a good steward while you'redoing this and learn, develop
good habits, learn.
What do you want to beproviding for your family.
I'm telling you, if you startmaking this shift, this mindset
shift, you're a little moreintentional in this area.
It's going to become so muchmore natural for you.
Okay, All at your food budgetand then start digging into it.

(08:02):
Now for your self tip.
I got a question for you.
So this is dropping towards themiddle of August right now.
So we're in the summer months,we're getting close to Labor Day
.
You may be listening to thislater, summer may be past, but
either way, this questionapplies What memories have you
made this summer with your kids?
Now, i did not ask you whattrips have you been on?

(08:24):
That's where we're going to goimmediately.
I've been on this vacation orthis camp, or we got this plan.
Now you want to ask whatmemories have you made?
Okay, now it's not too late.
It doesn't have to cost you aton of money either.
Create an adventure.
This.
Literally, guys can beexploring a park, you know, with

(08:45):
your kids.
And if they're young enough, hey, just pretend you're GI Joe
or something, your army man, andjust go explore a park, get a
couple of sticks and just playarmy with them.
I'm telling you, it's a littlestuff like that Act silly, act
silly, make them laugh.
There's nothing to be.
We can't underestimate thepower of can a silly string.

(09:06):
I'm just here to tell you.
You know, i went to Sermon campwith my 11 year old and one of
the big things they do has to dowith shaving cream, and you
spray and shaving cream on that.
I have a wonderful picture withme and her.
I'm head to toe with shavingcream, she's head to toe with
shaving cream.
We're laughing.
We made a memory That's goingto be a core memory for her.
No doubt about it.

(09:28):
Right Now, do we have to getsome cleanup afterwards?
Yes, was it the clean up thefunnest?
No, but would I trade it foranything in the world?
Absolutely not, absolutely not.
It's a wonderful memory thatwe're I was able to make with
her.
My challenge to myself is I needto be more attention about
making more memories.
You do too.
So the summer is almost over.

(09:49):
If you got kids you've heard mesay this before You only get 18
summers.
Then most of your kids are outof the house by then.
And this is hard for me tothink about, because I have a 12
, she'll be 13 here this summer, and to think that I only get
five more with her.
That's something that brings me.
It's hard to talk about.

(10:11):
Well, how fast it goes, guys, how fast it goes.
So be intentional here.
Make some memories.
Don't worry about the big trips.
If you're able to do that, fine, great.
But make sure on those tripsyou have time to make memories
too, and we're not just clickingpictures on our cell phone, but

(10:31):
you're actually connecting withyour kids, making memories that
count.
All right, fellas, there areyour three tips your health tip
You cannot run the fort.
Your health tip audit your foodbudget.
And your self tip You need tomake some memories with your
kids.
Okay, all right now for yourbook of the week this week.
I don't have a copy here withme.
I got to see a copy when I wasin West Monroe, but it's your

(10:52):
daily fill, phil.
Okay, so this has a hundreddevotionals that Phil Robertson
put out.
They cover God-honoringprinciples, fellas, that include
committing to the life ofChrist and of his words, tells
about the importance ofunderstanding, kindness, respect
, hard work and financialstewardship.

(11:13):
It tells about enjoying God'screation here, with earth,
animals and each other, and hedoes it from a very interesting
way.
He does some storytelling, buthe also just hits you the way
Phil does with unflinchinghonesty, guys.
So I'm telling you what this isa great one to add to your
resources.
Again, it's only a hundred daydevotion, but it's a great way

(11:34):
you can read it over and overagain.
I'll share it with others, maybe share it with the outdoor
buddy of yours.
Again, kind of sticking withthat theme of Buck Commander,
duck Commander, things like that.
I wanted to pull something fromtheir resources that I thought
you guys would really it wouldresonate well.
So your daily fill we'll try tohave a link in the show notes
for you guys.
There You can definitely go tothis episode webpage or you can

(11:55):
also go to the lionwithinusslash book and you'll see our
entire book of the week list, guys.
So every week when we do a bookof the week, we put it on that
site.
So I've shared that out withguys in the past too.
Hey, what are some books Ishould be reading?
I just sent them the link.
Hey, just pick any of these.
They're all good.
I've read pretty much all ofthem.
Some of them don't have adirect Christian theme, some of

(12:18):
them are more business related, but we try to make sure all the
stuff that applies to good, solid truth that will help you
grow in leadership.
Okay, now dad joke time.
Who's ready for this?
So I got one that submittedfrom one of our community
members and then one that I gotmyself.
So, dad joke number one I gotfired from the bank today.
A man came in and asked me tocheck his balance, so I pushed

(12:42):
him.
So that was submitted by ourmember, clifford Curtin.
And Clifford, he's a great guy.
I was able to actually have aconversation with Clifford
recently, got to meet him andlearn a little bit about him and
his family.
So thank you, my friend, forsending that one in.
Now for sure, easy way to getconnected with us and get your
dad jokes on the show is be apart of our community.

(13:04):
I could like to allow thosejokes from our guys and we're
going to put them out there.
We'll give you a shout out.
So thank you again, clifford, for getting that to us.
My man, dad joke number twowhat do you call a mouse that
swears?
A cursor?
of course, come on now, guys.
You should have got that one.
So, number one I got fired fromthe bank.
Today.
A man came and asked me tocheck his balance, so I pushed

(13:26):
him.
Number two what do you call amouse that swears A cursor?
There you go, there you go.
So remember, i rolls, count.
The more I rolls, the better.
I have found.
That is my check point with mywife, my 13, my 12, almost 13
year old.
That one, if I can get a goodeye roll, that makes the cut All
right, fellas.
So your question of your week, this week I want you to think
about this seriously How doesyour identity as a child of God

(13:51):
shape you?
Think about that for a second.
Your identity, you're notdefined by your past.
You're not defined by all thebad stuff you've done or all the
great stuff you've done either.
Right, if you absolutely arecrushing it in life and maybe
you have a seven-figure bankaccount and you're rocking
around with a truck that youwant to ride and you do all the
vacations, all the trips, great, that doesn't find you.

(14:13):
Christ defines you.
You are a child of God, so howdoes that shape you?
How does that influence youmoving forward, the decisions
that you make?
the person that shows up willno one's watching.
That's the question that youneed to sit this weekend, ponder

(14:33):
and think about.
All right guys.
So there you go your Fun Friday.
