Chris Grainger (00:03):
Welcome to the
Lion within us, a podcast
serving Christian men who arehungry to be the leaders God
intends you to be.
I'm your host, Chris Granger.
Let's jump in.
All right, guys, fun Fridaytime.
I'm excited to be here.
I'm excited to have you here.
Let's dig in.
So, before we get too far, we'regoing to start off with
scripture, because it's soimportant each and every episode
to begin with the word of God,and this week we've been looking
(00:23):
at Romans, chapter eight, verse18.
It says I consider that ourpresent sufferings are not worth
comparing with the glory thatwould be revealed in us.
So, guys, go check out thatspiritual kickoff.
I spent a lot of time unpackingthat verse and just to
understand.
Help you guys understand.
You know.
Sufferings are real.
They are.
We're going to have pain, we'regoing to have loss.
(00:45):
If you don't, if you haven'thad any in this life, just wait,
it's going to happen, okay, butit's ultimately.
We have glory waiting for usthat's going to be revealed
because we have surrendered tothe Lordship of Jesus Christ.
And that right there, friends, that is worth hanging your hat
on, that's worth getting up inthe morning, that's worth
(01:06):
getting excited, that's worthsmiling and that's worth sharing
with others.
So hopefully that you had achance to listen to that
spiritual kickoff and it servedyou well.
Also, go listen to theconversation with with Sergeant.
I had so much fun, so much funhanging out with him.
Just hearing his story, hearinghis testimony, absolutely blew
(01:26):
me away.
You know, to have his son takenfrom him the way that he was
and the choice that he's made tobe obedient to the Holy Spirit
and to just love just love theman who shot his son.
Guys, this is something thatyou can't make up.
He's not trying to do this forany notoriety or anything like
(01:48):
that, you know.
He's just trying to share histestimony of what God has done
and now, what God is doingthrough this story, through the
things that happened to him,it's incredible.
So hopefully, if you didn't geta chance to listen to that, go
back and listen to it, becauseif you're struggling with
bitterness or anger, you can'tlet some things go.
There's some really solidtruths that I gave us in that
(02:10):
conversation that my prayerhelps you grow.
You know it may be.
It still may take time.
I'm not saying this is going toheal everything.
I don't want to get me wrong.
It's not a magic pill forforgiveness, but hearing other
stories and seeing how otherpeople deal with these losses
like this is so important.
It's so important.
(02:31):
So, guys, go check thatconversation out.
All right, so now let's get intoour Fun Friday Tips.
We've got our Health Tip, ourWill Tip and our Self Tip and,
as a quick reminder, we have alot of new listeners too.
Our Health Tips each week talkabout how can we have stronger
minds and bodies.
Our Will Tips are all abouthaving better stewards of our
career and our finances, and ourSelf Tips are really designed
(02:54):
to be better husbands and betterdads.
Okay, so that's really whatit's all about.
So let's get to our Health Tip.
I want you to remember thatbitterness hurts our hearts more
than it does others.
That's it.
Bitterness hurts our heartsmore than it does others, and
what we have to do is we have toextract that bitterness.
And then, if you do, if youjust say you know what, I am not
(03:17):
going to be bitter, watch whatyour Lord does he's going to
replace it with joy.
And, guys, joy it's just, it'ssomething that once you have joy
like with Sergeant Ike havingthat conversation with him, from
the moment we got on, before weeven hit record.
There's just a joy in his step.
You can see it in his heart, inhis eyes.
(03:39):
Just you know what.
He's gone through some things.
Life has dealt him some somepretty tough hands right and
he's played them.
He's played them with joy.
So if you have that bitternessand you're holding on that
bitterness, all that's doing isrobbing you of joy.
It's not doing anything to theperson that you're upset about.
I don't tell you that.
(03:59):
So it could be your ex-wife orex-girlfriend or that boss at
work who's doing nothing butjust frustrates you every, all
the time.
Could be people who cut you offin traffic or people that slow
you down.
Whatever it is, any opportunitythat you have to be bitter,
you're just harming yourself, and bitterness is like a cancer
it grows and it grows and itgrows.
(04:21):
You got to get it out.
You got to get it out and onceyou get it out, you get it out
by loving others.
I'm telling you you want tohave a stronger mind.
Get bitterness out of it.
Remove that bitterness, replaceit with joy and just let the
Holy Spirit at that point showyou what to do and then take
those steps.
Now, your wealth tip this week.
(04:42):
I want to talk to you about onething.
It's a common thing out therebut not a lot of people know.
Think through the fundamentalsof investing.
So if you ever hear semi-tons,do you do DCA?
What you're talking about isdollar cost averaging.
So basically, this is a verysimple practice.
You systematically invest, okay, equal amounts of money at
(05:03):
regular intervals, regardless atthe price, of what's going on.
So it doesn't matter what themarket's doing.
You say you know what.
Each month I'm going to invest, let's say $150.
And I'm going to split thatacross these stocks or these
mutual funds or whatever thesebonds, these ETFs, and what that
does.
If you just remain consistentand persistent in this, okay,
(05:25):
you're reducing your overallimpact of price volatility and
you're lowering your averagecost per share.
It's fundamental guys.
So for people out there who aretrying to time the market and
trying to get rich quick, thatnever works.
For the one guy that does, itdoes work.
There's probably 99 of themthat doesn't.
But if you dollar cost average, you're super intentional about.
(05:46):
You know what?
I want to be in the market eachand every month.
I want to invest and I believein these securities, whatever
they are, and you have to figureout what that stuff is on your
own, but if you're justconsistent in that, that's a
beautiful way to build wealthand that's what it's all about
being a good steward of what Godgives you.
Okay, now, self-tip I want youto think about this Carefully
(06:11):
correct your kids Carefully, notcarelessly, okay.
So I'm going to tell you rightnow, guys, we have to be careful
, because if you focus on thatword care, care actually you
know to actually uphold, toactually have some value and
want to help the person, thatwill change everything.
(06:31):
Because the words we say, particularly as men know we
speak to a lot of men here toline with Dennis the words you
say your kids make an impact.
Now you hear me say all thetime there's more cost and tall
and yes, actions are superimportant.
There's more meaning aboveactions.
But as men, our words, man, youcan tear up, you can tear down
(06:51):
just in the swoop of a hat.
You can do it, fellas.
So be careful.
You don't want to be that dadwho all you're doing is tell
them how jacked up your kids are.
Like can you ever do anythingright?
Or why do you always screw up?
You don't want to do thatCarefully correct, I'm not
saying you never correct, because we do want to help them
grow and teach them.
(07:12):
That's all.
The Bible is very clear aboutbeing a biblical dad and
teaching our children.
So don't get me wrong there.
But be careful with how you doit.
Choose your battles, choose theareas that you want them to
focus on, choose thecharacteristics that you want to
draw out of them and focus onthat.
Hey, I see that you'reexhibiting some really good
(07:34):
leadership skills here.
I know you're trying to do yourbest job.
You think about how can you dothis task in a way that's going
to actually serve you.
It's going to help the familybe creative, but carefully
correct them Instead of justcoming in hard with the hammer.
Be quiet.
I don't want to hear you talkabout this anymore.
So you got to be careful, guys.
(07:56):
I'm talking to myself here.
So it's very easy for us tolower our octave and get jacked
up.
Don't do that.
Don't do that.
Choose or just be calm.
You got to step away.
Step away, get yourself, getyour thoughts and then carefully
correct your kids, all right.
So your health tip, well-tipand self-tips Again that health
(08:16):
tip.
You got to extract thatbitterness, fellas.
Get that out of your life, I'mtelling you, because the
bitterness is doing nothing butharming you.
It's not helping anyone, okay,so get that bitterness out.
Wealth tip Okay.
Dollar cost averaging If you'venever done that before, it is a
great way to get started in themarket and if you are already
investing, this is a great wayto stay consistent and prolific
(08:40):
in building your wealth.
I'm telling you this is a greatway to do it.
And the self-tip I want you tocarefully correct your kid, not
carelessly where it could be.
Kids if you have multiple, likeus, we have a whole zoo here,
but anyway, that's a wholenotepad.
Guest.
All right now for your book ofthe week this week.
Guys, I don't have it with herewith me, but I am reading it
right now and I thought this wasa really good one to kind of
(09:01):
align with what we talked aboutthis week.
It's called Crazy Love, overwhelmed by Relentless God.
Because ultimately, god is love, right, and when he's thinking
about God, he's got that crazy, relentless, all-powerful love.
And sometimes you gotta wonderare we missing it?
So it's not crazy to thinkabout this stuff, right, we have
the God in the universe.
He's put this all stufftogether, everything, and he
(09:24):
loves us with radical,unconditional, self-sacrificing
love.
And I'm telling you, fellas, wehave to respond.
We have to respond to this andI'm not just responding like the
normal people say well, I justgo to church or sing this.
No, no, we have to actually dosomething.
And what we're gonna do, whatthis talks about here, is
actually showing you how you canactually take this love and
(09:46):
adapt it and utilize it in yourlife to make his love, your love
, the love that others can see.
I'm telling you, if you justtake that one word love and you
put it into action and you startwalking that out, it's gonna
change things about everythingit is.
It's gonna change the waypeople think about you, how they
(10:06):
come to you, how they respondto you, how they speak about you
to others.
It changes everything.
But that word love, it's acrazy word and when done
correctly, forgiveness oh man,it's available.
I'm telling you and that's whatwe talked about a lot this week
, about that forgiveness ofothers.
Okay, so check that book out.
(10:27):
We'll have a link in the shownotes where you guys, if you
wanna check out one out my bigshout out to my brother, michael
Pottz, who hooked me up withthat, as I was.

All right, dad joke.
Number one what's the differencebetween black eyed peas and
chick peas?
One can sing a song, the othercan only hum us.
(10:50):

.
Number two my friend recentlyquit his job to pursue a career
in miming.
I haven't heard from him since.
So let me know which one youlike best, guys.
(11:13):

eyed peas and chick peas?
One can sing a song, the othercan only hum us.
And number two my friendrecently quit his job to pursue
a career in miming.

So the question of the week wetalked about all week is how do
you love your enemies?
Cause it's so easy just to sayI'm all about my enemies, but
(11:59):
actually to walk that thing outis a lot different when you
start walking out versus justsaying the words.
So how do you do it?
How do you actually put thatinto action?
And here's the key, guys.
Here's the key, the answers inthe question love, love, caring
for others and putting theirknees first and actually having
(12:20):
that heart full of love.
If you have that heart full oflove versus heart full of
bitterness, I'm just telling youthe Holy Spirit is gonna do
some incredible things.
So hopefully that helps youguys out.
