James J. Braddock grew up in Hell's Kitchen, NY and NJ in an Irish family. He spent his childhood dreaming of playing football for Notre Dame and eventually becoming a fire fighter. However, in his late teens, he discovered a love for boxing.
During the late 1920s and into the 30s, James became one of the hardest hitting light heavyweights in the world. However, his life came crashing down soon after the great depression. He lost everything, including his boxing title.
However, Braddock wasn't through yet. He found work at the docks and worked odd jobs when he could. He finally got his break and worked his way back up to the top where he earned the heavyweight title.
Listen to this story of audacity, hard work and persistence that inspired millions during the Great Depression.
