Speaker 1 (00:00):
Success.
It's a word that meanssomething different to each of
us.
Sure, we all walk in control ofour schedules, more time with
our loved ones and the freedomto pursue our passions, but what
about the big goals that we'retold to set?
Well, they're unique to each ofus, and that's okay.
So today we're going to talkabout how we can define our own

(00:21):
success and achieve it bysetting our own rules, without
getting caught up in society'sdefinition.
Welcome to the Mind, your TimePodcast.
I'm Shannon Baker, your hostand coffee aficionado.
Whether your goal is toincrease your side gig income or
scale to six figures, you're inthe right place.

(00:42):
You will learn about the tools, actionable strategies and
tactics you can use to take backcontrol of your time and life.
I specialize in helping purposedriven women like yourself work
smarter and tap into the growthpotential their business holds.
So if you're ready to make abigger impact and achieve
business growth without beingtied to it 24 seven, then stick

(01:06):
around.
Let's dive into today's topic.
Well, first of all, I'd like tosay welcome back If you've been
tuning into the podcast for awhile.
Thank you and hello if you're anew listener.
This episode is the first one ofthe new year and I'm really
excited about the possibilitiesthat this year holds for me.

(01:26):
I'm really happy that Iachieved my priority goal last
year, which was to build mybusiness income to the point
that I could actually leave mypart time job, so I am
officially a full timeentrepreneur.
Yes, and I must say it's a bitscary, but I'm doing it scared I
made a pivot in my life almostfour years ago and basically

(01:49):
started over in my business, which is why I went back to work
part time.
I'm one who has never had aproblem with working, so that my
husband didn't have to shoulderthe responsibility of caring
for the family on his own and, honestly, I'm not the type of
person who can maintain theirsanity without having something
to work on.
Now, over many years, I've hadseveral different businesses,

(02:13):
but I've only gotten comfortablewith doing business wide my way
and ignoring the naysayers, andI'll say the past five years or
so.
So the idea for today's episodecame to me as I actually
reflected on the things I wasable to accomplish last year.
Some things I tried went welland other things didn't.

(02:35):
Some others went better than Ieven imagined, but the truth of
the matter is that's just theway life goes in general, and it
definitely works that way whenyou're an entrepreneur.
But let me tell you, my friend,if you're a perfectionist in
recovery like me, then Iencourage you to Keep doing
scary things.
I found out that those are thethings that seem to work out the

(03:00):
best, and the best part is, Iset the bar for myself, and you
can too.
Before I made the decision toleave my job, my husband and I
sat down and we crunched thenumbers, and that number is just
the starting point for mybusiness.
It's not the final number thatI want or the final number that

(03:20):
I'm making plans to reach, butguess what?
I didn't let social media oranyone else convince me that my
number needed to be 6 figures.
Spoiler alert to hit thatnumber, I would have to be
working way too hard right nowand missing out on way too much
in life, and that's not my goal, and I don't want you to live

(03:41):
that way either.
That's why I want to talk aboutthis concept of defining
success on your own terms.
It's a journey that requiresself-reflection, confidence,
being intentional, and itdefinitely requires a shift in
your mindset, thanks to socialmedia and the advancement of
technology when it comes tomarketing, success is often

(04:01):
defined by your ability toacquire certain material
possessions, but in my personalopinion, true success goes
beyond external measurements.
It's about finding fulfillment, balance and alignment with your
core values, and I have afeeling that you agree with that
, or you wouldn't be tuning intothis podcast.
So let's go beyond societalexpectations and talk about

(04:26):
defining what success means toyou.
Then you might be wondering howdo I even start to define my
own success?
Well, the first step is toreflect on your personal values
and priorities.
What truly matters to youthat's what you need to know.
Is it making a positive impact, building meaningful
relationships or having aflexible lifestyle that allows

(04:49):
for personal growth andenjoyment?
Take the time to identify yourcore values and then let them
guide your definition of successand how you're going to achieve
it.
About a year ago, I waslistening to an episode of the
Boat Money Revolution by TaraNewman, and she was talking
about creating an ownerstatement.

(05:10):
That's a statement thatidentifies the purpose that you
are really in business, your why, and it helps you put up the
right boundaries that help youmake the right decisions.
I'm going to put a link to thatin the show notes so you can
check it out.
But I'm going to share my ownerstatement with you and, let's
be clear, this does not replaceyour mission statement or your

(05:30):
vision statement, because youneed to combine all three to
really be clear on what youshould and should not be doing
in your business.
So here's my owner statement.
It's to build a business that'sin service to my spirituality,
while creating wealth for myselfand others.
And I'm not talking aboutmaterial wealth only.

(05:52):
I mean mental health, emotionalwealth, physical wealth.
And, yeah, material wealth isgreat because, let's be honest,
money is a tool that helps us tofocus on the other areas.
But the point is, this ownerstatement aligns with my core
values and allows me to stick tomy priorities, which are faith,

(06:15):
self and family, in that order.
Once you have a clearunderstanding of your values and
your priorities, you can startto set goals that align with
that.
Remember, success is not a onesize fits all concept.
It's unique to each and everyone of us, so don't compare your
goals or your progress toanyone else's.
Focus on your journey and whatbrings you true happiness and

(06:38):
fulfillment.
For example, if you want aflexible lifestyle, your goal
should be to create a schedulethat allows for regular
self-care and quality time withfamily and friends.
So you need to set a smart goaland create a plan to make it
happen.
But here's the catch mydefinition of a smart goal is a
little different than whatyou're used to hearing.

(06:59):
The S still stands for bespecific, but you need to decide
what you want to achieve and bespecific in determining what
that means.
And then I suggest you pick oneor two positive affirmations
that will help you staymotivated and focused, because
your mindset matters.
The M stands for mind yourbusiness.
Don't worry about whateverybody else is doing.

(07:22):
They only post the good stuffon social media.
Their lives could be inshambles behind the scenes.
So, again, focus on the goalthat you picked and what you
need to do every day to reach it.
A is for appropriate.
Is this the right time for thatbusiness goal?
That is determined by what'sgoing on in your personal life,

(07:46):
and we'll talk about that alittle bit more later.
R goes hand in hand.
You need to be realistic.
Be realistic in yourexpectations based on the season
your life is in.
Give yourself some grace, because things happen.
So it may take you more than 90days to reach your goal and
that's okay.
Just keep working on it.

(08:06):
And then T treat yourself asyou make progress, because small
steps matter.
I have a wall of wins in myoffice, but the point is to
recognize and celebrate yourvictory, small to big.
So start by writing smallvictories on a sticky note and
put them where you can see them.
If you journal, write it inyour journal.

(08:28):
Just make sure you track yourprogress and celebrate all the
wins so that you stay motivatedand keep moving forward.
Now I actually recently did anepisode on setting smart goals
for success and in that episodeI share three questions that you
have to answer, because theywill help you pick the right
goals that you need to create astrategic plan, and you need a

(08:53):
strategic plan to achievesuccess on your own terms no
more winging it.
So make sure you're gonna checkthat episode out after you
finish this one.
Of course, I'll put a link toit in the show notes, but this
is very important, so importantthat I actually created a
resource for every woman insideof the mighty society membership

(09:14):
To help them not just withsetting their goals, but
creating a detailed action planthat will help you achieve your
goals.
The 90-day goal settingworksheets will help you align
your personal and your businessgoals so that you can identify
the offers that actually go withyour goal and Visualize what

(09:34):
life will be like when youachieve it.
There are also a month, onemonth, two month, three
marketing action plans that youcan use to create your strategy.
So, basically, the goal settingworksheets are like the secret
sauce for achieving thegreatness you want.
They're created to guide, motivate and support you every
step of the way on your journey, and they're just one of the

(09:55):
many resources inside of themighty society, membership Not
to mention.
I'm building a community ofpurpose driven women like you
and would love to have youinside, so go to the Shannon
Baker comm for slash membershipto find out more Now.
Another vital aspect of definingyour own success is embracing

(10:16):
the power of learning andProfessional growth, because
success is an ongoing process,it's not a destination.
So you need to maintain an openattitude in all ways.
Increase your knowledge.
Instead of seeing challenges asroadblocks, view them as
opportunities for growth andself-improvement.
Trust me, this mindset is goingto open doors for you that you

(10:39):
never knew existed.
To help you with this, I reallyencourage you to attend
workshops, conferences, takecourses, join professional
organizations and again connectto a supportive community.
But word of caution Only choosethings that support the goals
that you set and, if possible, find a mentor, accountability

(11:01):
partner or a coach who can guideyou along the way.
Remember, it's not just aboutprofessional growth, but it's
also about your personal growth.
Now, when you're learning, you're gaining more confidence
and more than likely, you'regoing to discover new passions
and with that confidence, youtap into the power you have
within you to overcome anyobstacle.

(11:22):
That goes Well, that comes yourway.
I know you've got this, butremember there's no finish line
when it comes to investing inyourself.
Take time for self-care,self-reflection, set goals and
keep pushing yourself, and don'tbe afraid to step out of your
comfort zone and embrace newExperiences.
They're actually the secretingredients to a journey of

(11:46):
success.
Now let's talk a little bitabout work life integration.
Society pushes the idea thatsuccess requires you to
sacrifice other aspects of yourlife, like spending quality time
with your family and friends orjust taking care of yourself.
But remember you have the powerto define what success means to
you without compromising Worklife integration, work life

(12:09):
balance or your quality of life.
The goal is actually to createa synergy between your business,
your day job if you have oneand your personal life, and if
you want some tips to help youachieve this work life
integration, I did an entireepisode on it to help you get
started.
A link to that will also be inthe show notes.

(12:29):
Now the last thing I want totalk about is the fear of
failure, because it can hold youback.
We live in a world that isfixated on the need to broadcast
our success really everythingthat you do so none of us are
immune from getting caught up inthe window view of the success
that someone else posts online.
I've had this happen to me aswell.
The catch is we don't knowwhat's really happening in their

(12:54):
lives behind the scenes.
So always remember everythingthat glitters is not gold, and
because of this societalpressure, it's really easy to
view failure as a setback.
But, my friend, let's changeyour mindset.
Failure is not the opposite ofsuccess.
It's actually a stepping stonetowards it.

(13:15):
So, instead of playing it safeto avoid failure, look at
failure as an opportunity forgrowth, learning and course
correction.
Look at those mistakes asvaluable lessons that bring you
closer to the desired version ofthe success that you want.
I mean.
Think about it.
We're always getting updates tothe software on our Our devices

(13:36):
or different apps.
Why?
Because the updates either fixsomething that's wrong or give
us a new feature to make itbetter.
So when you try something andit doesn't work out, assess what
went wrong and try again Now.
If the results that you getafter that never improve, though
, then maybe whatever that ideais, or whatever you're trying to

(13:59):
do, isn't a good idea and youjust need to move on.
But whatever the case may be,learn from each attempt and
celebrate what goes right.
So let's do a recap of whatwe've talked about today so you
can achieve success on your ownterms.
The concept of success and howit's a personal journey is
unique to each and every one ofus.

(14:20):
I've talked about my ownexperience of making the
transition from workingpart-time and building my
business on the side to becominga full-time entrepreneur, and
hopefully, my experienceemphasizes the importance of
doing things scary, especiallyif you are recovering
perfectionist like me, and wealso talked about the societal

(14:41):
pressure to conform to externalmeasurements of success, like
getting more materialpossessions.
My challenge for you is to lookbeyond that.
I talked about the idea ofcreating an owner's statement,
which will guide your decisionsand help you set boundaries that
are in alignment with yourpersonal values.
Then we talked about theimportance of setting goals that
align with your values andpriorities and the fact that

(15:04):
success, again, is not aone-size-fits-all concept.
So I talked about my view ofSMART goals and talked about a
resource that's available insideof the Mighty Society
membership to help you set thatSMART goal and also create the
plan to achieve it, and that'sthe 90-day goal setting
worksheets.

(15:25):
Then I started to wrap up bytalking about the importance of
work-life integration, and Ichallenged the traditional
notion of work-life balance, because I want you to focus on
the finding success withoutsacrificing your quality of life
.
And, last but not least, talkedabout the fear failure.
We need to reframe it as astepping stone towards your

(15:46):
success, an opportunity for youto grow and learn.
So, in essence, success isabout defining your own version,
aligning it with your values, setting meaningful goals,
embracing continuous growth, integrating work and life
harmoniously and viewing failureas a catalyst for improvement.

(16:07):
Remember, your journey isunique, so focus on what truly
brings you happiness andfulfillment.
Keep pushing yourself, celebrate your victories, big
and small, and don't forget toembrace new experiences along
the way, I want to thank you forallowing me to kick off the new
year with you.
