Speaker 1 (00:00):
It seems like the word self care has really become
a bit of a buzzword, but thetruth is it's something we
really need to give attention toas business owners, and I'm not
talking about just treatingyourself to a spa day Although I
could use one myself.
I'm talking about the kind ofself care that really feeds your
mind, body and soul andempowers you to get stuff done

(00:22):
in your business.
So today we're going to diginto this topic a bit more, but
I'm going to specifically talkabout some proactive things that
we can do to help us navigatethe ups and downs of
entrepreneurship.
Welcome to the mind your timepodcast.
I'm Shannon Baker, your hostand coffee aficionado.

(00:44):
Whether your goal is toincrease your side gig income or
scale to six figures, you're inthe right place.
You will learn about the tools, actionable strategies and
tactics you can use to take backcontrol of your time and life.
I specialize in helping purposedriven women like yourself work
smarter and tap into the growthpotential their business holds.

(01:05):
So if you're ready to make abigger impact and achieve
business growth without beingtied to it 24-7, then stick
around.
Let's dive into today's topic.
I'd like to welcome you backand If you turned into last
week's episode, then you know Iam just coming out of hustle

(01:25):
mode in my business.
So, needless to say, I am longoverdue for a whole lot of self
care and when this episode goeslive, I will be wrapping up a
week of self care.
That really is why this topicwas chosen as a follow-up
episode, because self care iscrucial for us as entrepreneurs,
but oftentimes we skip caringfor ourselves because our minds

(01:49):
are always focused on what weneed to do next.
In a client meeting the otherday, we did an icebreaker
exercise because there are twonew team members and the
question was what do we like todo in our spare time?
We all actually chuckle likespare time.
Who has that?
But we also talked about thefact that we have to make time

(02:12):
to pour in our into ourselves ona daily basis, even if it's
just for five minutes.
We need to do something thatfills up our proverbial cup
every day so that we cancontinue to be of service to
others and to care for others.
And this isn't the first timethat I've talked about self care
on this podcast and I guaranteeyou it won't be the last.
I actually did an episode lastyear that was focused on the

(02:35):
importance of self care inMaintaining sustainable business
growth and how neglecting itcould really lead to burnout.
I'm going to put a link to thatin the show notes.
Taking care of yourself canreally help you avoid burnout,
and that way, you have thestrength, the power, the energy

(02:56):
that you need To build a solidfoundation in your business to
support the long-term successthat you desire, and that's what
I want to talk about.
That's why I want to talk aboutsome practical strategies that
can be used to help us Navigatethe ups and downs that come with
being an entrepreneur, because, honestly, they can't be avoided
.
Those changes come from mindsetshifts to building resilience,

(03:22):
and we're going to talk abouthow you can confidently navigate
these changes and transitionswhile staying true to your
vision and achieving your goals.
As someone who successfully grewa side gig into a full-time
business, I've learned a thingor two about navigating the ups
and downs of thisentrepreneurial journey.
I've juggled raising a family, working the day job, my

(03:43):
volunteer work, running abusiness, managing client work
and trying to still enjoy life alittle bit.
Does that sound like you?
Now, in this new phase of myjourney, all the things that
were on my plate before arestill there, except for the day
job, and that has actually beenreplaced by me needing to give
more support to my aging parents.

(04:05):
So, in essence, I have moreresponsibilities, but now I have
more control over my time toget things done.
So I have to be veryintentional with how I use my
time so that I'm not working allday, every day, including the
weekends.
Now I'm about two months intothis new phase and I'll be
honest, it's been a struggle.
Anytime your schedule changesor has a major shift, it

(04:29):
actually takes a little bit oftime for you to find a new
rhythm, and that's what I'mgoing through right now.
Are you having a similarstruggle?
You know whether you can relateto one of the phases I've gone
through on this journey or not.
Every single one of us gothrough transitions.
That can be from shiftingbusiness models to entering a
new market building or scalingyour operations.

(04:49):
No matter what it is,transitions are an inevitable
part of this journey.
But the good news is, with theright mindset and strategies,
you can navigate those changesand transitions with confidence
and come out strong on the otherside.
But keep in mind that doesn'tmean you won't have any meltdown
moments along the journey.
I've had many of those and I'msure I'm going to have many more

(05:10):
, but the key is to push throughthose moments and continue to
move forward.
So how can we do that?
Well, that's where mindsetshifts come in.
As busy female entrepreneurs,we wear a lot of hats in our
daily lives and in ourbusinesses and we face numerous
challenges along the way.
So the first mindset shift weneed to make is to stop viewing

(05:33):
those challenges or transitionsas roadblocks.
We need to start embracing thefact that change is constant, so
we can start learning from ourfailures, and we need to look at
those transitions, changes andchallenges as opportunities for
growth and innovation.
This was a lesson that Ilearned when I decided I didn't

(05:56):
want to be a virtual assistantanymore.
I was terrified and hesitantabout making such a big change,
even though I know it was neededand not to toot my own horn but
I was good at what I did and Ihad some great clients, and some
not so great sometimes too, butthe thing is, one of them is
still with me today, over 10years later.

(06:17):
But by shifting my mindset andviewing those transitions as a
chance for me to learn andevolve, I was able to
successfully navigate thetransition and fast forward to
today.
I'm still here.
My business has evolved and Ilove my business.
Making that pivot actuallyopened up opportunities for me

(06:38):
to expand my knowledge andexperience so that I can be even
better at serving my clientsand providing the support and
guidance that they need to grow.
How did I do this?
Well, one I did have a mentorthat helped me start to make
this shift in my mindset.
This process really requiressome self-reflection, because

(06:59):
it's really easy to get caughtup in the daily grind of running
your business and then you losesight of the big picture.
But when you make time forself-reflection which you need
to do if you wanna gain clarityon your goals and utilize your
strengths but this also allowsyou to figure out ways that you
can compensate for yourweaknesses, because we all have
them.
But this really means you needto ask yourself some tough

(07:23):
questions.
You need to answer honestlyabout where you are and where
you want to go.
So, whether you're thinkingabout rebranding or launching a
new service or some other majortransition, before you dive
headfirst into that process, make time to pause and reflect
and ask yourself these questionswhat are my strengths, what are

(07:45):
my weaknesses?
What lessons can I learn frompast experiences?
By taking the time to answerthese questions honestly and
reflect on the answers, you'llgain valuable insights that will
guide you through thetransition with confidence.
And trust me when I say this isa part of the process that you

(08:05):
cannot skip.
It's vital if you want to makesure that you set smart goals,
but my definition of smart goalsis a little bit different than
what you're probably thinking oryou've seen online.
But this process is key tosetting the right goals at the
right time to get the successthat you want.

(08:27):
I actually did a three-partseries last year on business
strategy and goal setting, because a big part of the
process means you need to createa strategic plan.
Strategic planning is crucialif you want to navigate these
transitions effectively.
It's about setting clearobjectives, identifying action

(08:50):
steps and staying focused onyour goals.
Goal setting is just a smallpart of the equation.
You can set all the goals youwant, but if you don't have a
plan that you can execute, you're not gonna reach that goal
.
So I'm gonna put links to allthree of those episodes in the
show notes for you and you cancheck them out later.
Now I don't wanna sound like I'mbeating a dead horse at this

(09:10):
point about goal setting, butgoal setting and creating the
plan it really determines yoursuccess or failure.
You remember that saying if youfail to plan, plan to fail.
And this is really important, which is why I created
worksheets for members of theMighty Society membership to

(09:31):
guide them through this entireprocess.
Not only will those worksheetsor do those worksheets help them
set realistic goals, but itincludes pages for weekly
planning using time blocking.
We all know time management andtask management is vital if you
want to get things done, andthe way that I built out the

(09:53):
Mighty Society membership isreally to help entrepreneurs, no
matter what phase of thejourney they're in, get access
to the resources and knowledgethat they need to build a strong
business foundation withsystems to support their
business growth, and you canfeel free to check that out at
dshannonbakercom.

(10:13):
So what's next?
Well, once you've picked theright goal and you've created
your plan of action, you needsome resilience building
practices.
As busy entrepreneurs, we're nostrangers to setbacks and
challenges, but buildingresilience is about bouncing
back stronger, more confidentand more determined than ever.
It's really about developingsome coping mechanisms to help

(10:35):
you navigate those ups and downsof entrepreneurship that you
can't avoid.
You know I've faced severalsetbacks over the past 12 years
and that I've been in business, and some of them are pretty
major.
But instead of throwing in thetowel, I focused on building up
my resilience.
This was very important duringthe pandemic, so I started

(10:56):
practicing more self-care daily.
One of the things I did wasestablish the morning routine.
I started taking walking breaks.
I started having more coffeedates with my girlfriends.
I really also leaned into womenin my community online for
support, and that really helpedme stay focused on my goals.

(11:16):
As a result, I was able toovercome the setbacks I
experienced and, on the otherside, I was more confident and
stronger than I was before.
This really shows theimportance of being a part of a
community that can relate toyour struggles and aspirations.
We can't do this alone.
Having a strong support networkcan make all the difference

(11:38):
when you're navigating thesetransitions and challenges.
Whether it's seeking advicefrom mentors, connecting with
fellow business owners online orin person, or joining
professional communities, havinga support network can provide
you with valuable guidance, encouragement and different
perspectives, because, let's behonest, sometimes we need a

(11:59):
different perspective to help usget out of our own way, and
some of you are probably like medon't have a mate that's even
remotely interested in being anentrepreneur.
I mean, don't get me wrong, myhusband is very supportive, but
we can't talk shop.
So I have a small circle oftrusted women that I can
brainstorm with, getencouragement from, and we cheer

(12:22):
each other on.
That's the type of globalcommunity I am looking to build
inside of the mighty societymembership, one where we're all
comfortable with defining whatsuccess means to us individually
and achieving it.
So if that sounds likesomething you want to be a part
of, feel free to join us inside, because I would love to see you
there.

(12:42):
So there you have it.
These are just a few simplestrategies that you can
implement to navigate thetransitions that you're going to
encounter on this journey as abusiness owner.
Whether it's shifting yourmindset, practicing
self-reflection or self-care,building resilience, strategic
planning or just finding asupportive community, these

(13:02):
strategies can help you navigatethe changes with confidence and
again, when you push through it, you come out stronger on the
other side.
Now, before I wrap up, I want tolet you know about an
incredible resource that'savailable to help you take the
