Welcome to the New Heart for Life podcast hosted by Dan Williams. Dan is honored to share Ty Brown's final interview that was recorded when Ty was a masters track and field legend, with five world records to his name. He was set to compete in the World Championships in September 2018 in Malaga Spain with his ultimate goal of setting the world record in the 80-meter hurdles.

Sadly, Ty's life was cut short and he did not get to realize his dream.

However, his legacy continues through his track meet, The Ty Brown Masters Invitational, which will be held on June 25th, 2023, to honor his memory.

Please join us as we remember Ty's dedication and passion and strive to continue his legacy through this event.

And now, here is Ty, in his own words, recorded in June 2018.

"I never really thought of retirement until that one day I did decide to retire, and I had to be at work at seven o'clock, so it was about five 30. They sat on the edge of the bed, and for some reason, it dawned on me that I had been working 50 years of my life.  I said, oh my goodness. 50 years of my life at that exact moment.

It was the moment that I decided I was gonna retire.

My name is Ty, Ty Brown. Ty is for Tyrone, and I'm 73 years old. I was born and raised in Washington, dc. When I went to high school, I knew nothing about hurdles, but the first time I went over the hurdle, I felt real comfortable. I just didn't know what I was doing. I became the city champion in high school.

I spent two years at Alan Hancock College. I made all-conference in track and field after graduating and I completed my, uh, athletic endeavors at the University of Maryland.

When I turned 55, I laced up my track shoes and I haven't stopped since then. Okay,  now I'm preparing myself for the World Championships, which are coming up in September. I'm competing in three events, the 100 meters, and 200 meters, and my specialty, the hurdles, the 100 and the 200 is gonna be really tough to make the podium for my specialty.

That is my main focus to win the. 80-meter hurdle championship of the world. During the course of that, I hope to break my current record. I have, well, I did have five uh, world records. Probably the most important record that I broke was the 60-meter dash seven.

That is a world record.

The fact that I broke the world record was one thing. Everybody in the final heat were either a world champion at one time or certainly a Hall of Famer. And the fact that I. Beat them was a tremendous feeling. And then to have the world record to boot, oh, it was just it. It was overwhelming.

As long as I am physically able, I will compete. I love what I do. I do. I love what I do. How long will I do it? A hundred, maybe more. I mean, that's my, that's my vision. That's my vision."
