Dad (00:00):
Hey, Nora,
Norah (00:01):
dad,
Dad (00:01):
what are we gonna talk
about this week?
Norah (00:03):
we are going to talk
about music.
Dad (00:17):
Welcome back to the Nora
and dad show.
I am as always dad.
I am here as always with Nora, which makes sense since the show
was called the Nora and dadshow.
And it would be weird if I washere with Fred or Jane since
that would be false advertising, but it's good to be back with
everybody.
as Nora said, we are gonna talkabout music this week, which is
(00:38):
weird to me that we're now Ithink 15 episodes into our
podcast and music.
That is an important part ofboth of our lives is something
that we haven't we've touchedon, but haven't really talked
about in detail.
Norah (00:51):
I think, well, we talked
about it on another podcast that
might have been why.
Dad (00:55):
So when we did rock in the
suburbs, which is the kind of,
what gave us the idea to do thispodcast to begin with, our topic
was concerts.
So yeah, we did talk about musicon that, which is a music
podcast.
you've been making music sinceyou were at seven years old.
Norah (01:11):
That is true.
Dad (01:12):
You were actually in what I
would call like a fairly
successful local end.
Would you agree?
Norah (01:20):
I would say it was fairly
successful.
Dad (01:23):
I mean, you were.
Um, given that a, you were onlywhat, 11 to 13 years old when
this band was going on.
Um, and I think the oldestperson was two years older than
you.
So 15, when the band ended, youguys, you guys had a fair amount
of success, at a pretty youngage and pretty quickly, right.
Norah (01:45):
uh, it was relatively
quick.
Yeah.
Dad (01:47):
Yeah.
So the, so the band, fake ID,you, how many times did you play
Ohio bike week
Norah (01:54):
twice,
Dad (01:55):
which was awesome.
that is what it says.
It is.
It's a biker festival.
in Sanduski Ohio.
and there you were at like what,11 years old on stage rock music
for a bunch of like really, really drunk and stoned.
Bikers, which was awesome.
Um, you were, you were best ofCleveland 2019, is that right?
Norah (02:17):
It was here for COVID so
yeah.
Dad (02:20):
So 20 best of Cleveland,
2019, which is the Cleveland
magazine every year publishestheir best of Cleveland issue.
And.
In the fall of that year or inthe summer of that year,
actually in 2019, we got like aFacebook message saying that
your band won best of Cleveland.
And did you wanna play at thebest of Cleveland party at the
rock and roll hall of fame?
And I kind of thought it was ajoke that somebody was pulling
(02:43):
our leg, cuz like, why would, Imean,
Norah (02:46):
Rude.
Dad (02:46):
I think you deserved it,
but no, I think you deserved it,
but did didn't you think it waslike some kind of scam at first?
Like could this possibly bereal?
Could
Norah (02:54):
tell me until you thought
it was real, so,
Dad (02:57):
Oh, okay.
I thought it was a scam until Idid a little bit of
investigation and it wasactually, it was actually legit.
And so you guys, I'll, I'll linkthe story in the show notes, but
best of Cleveland, 2019, thebest, unexpected rock stars was
that the
Norah (03:13):
uh, yes.
Originally it was best coverband, but then we asked if they
could change it, cuz he wantedto not just play covers at the
rock hall.
Dad (03:22):
You wanted to do original
music.
and that came with its own dramabecause right after you found
out that you won, two guys quitthe band.
Norah (03:30):
Oh Yeah.
I forgot about that.
Dad (03:34):
Yeah.
Um, your original, one of youroriginal guitar players and your
bass player, quit the bandwithin like a week of committing
to play the best of Clevelandparty at the rock and roll hall
of fame.
and, that performance was indoubt, for a little bit then, uh
Ian, your, your original bassplayer who had.
(03:57):
Moved with his family or hisfamily moved.
And he went with them since hewas a teenager, to Phoenix,
agreed to come back and playwith you guys
Norah (04:04):
Yes.
Very thankful for that.
Dad (04:06):
the, and kind of yeah.
And kind of save the day.
So Ian, if you're listening, welove you dude, and we all
appreciate it.
And then the rock off in 2020,the high school rock off, which
is again at the rock and rollhall of fame and is one of, I
think the biggest high schooltalent.
Like rock talent competition inthe country.
Norah (04:22):
it's not just rock.
Dad (04:24):
right.
There's rap country and highschool battle of the bands.
How's that?
Norah (04:30):
That is more accurate and
that's going on right now too.
And we have a friend who's init.
That's cool.
Or I have a friend
Dad (04:38):
You're well, so the former,
the former drummer and the
former, and one of the formerguitar players from fake ID have
another, have subsequently putup fake ID.
COVID kind of killed your band.
Uh, unfortunately, but the twoof them put another band
together and they, they were inthe finals of the rock off, but
two years ago, the last time therock off was held fake ID,, made
(05:00):
the finals of the rock off.
30 or 30 or 32 bands, whateverit is, play over a number of
rounds and judges vote.
And then, they pass bandsthrough to the finals and then,
um, somebody wins and they getprizes and whatever, and, and,
your band did not win ultimatelythe finals, but, uh, but still
got through, which is a hugeaccomplishment.
(05:20):
And that was, that was a blast.
And that was like, that was likeright before COVID.
Norah (05:25):
I'm kind of glad we
didn't win.
Dad (05:28):
Why is that?
Norah (05:29):
Well, I don't know.
I just feel you wouldn't well,because like, I, I mean, We,
broke up during COVID, so likewe weren't playing shows or
anything.
And the band that did windetention, like.
I felt bad for them because Ididn't get to do anything.
Luckily they got to do it theyear after.
Um, and they're, they're doingvery good now, which is nice,
cuz they're all very lovelypeople.
Dad (05:48):
We, I hear them on serious.
Norah (05:50):
I know.
It's so cool.
Dad (05:51):
of like the, the punk
channel and I'll put the radio
on and I'm like, I know whothose guys are and they're, um,
and there they are on
Norah (05:57):
very talented.
Dad (05:58):
is really cool.
And you've done music stuff onyour own.
Do you, do, do you miss being ina band?
Norah (06:07):
Uh, yeah,
Dad (06:08):
You've done your own music
thing since that band broke up,
um, you've recorded a songyou've, You've played solo gigs,
kind of all over town for thelast couple of years.
but you said you miss
Norah (06:19):
Okay.
I do prefer playing solo gigs.
Dad (06:22):
why is that?
And don't say it's cuz you getto keep all the
Norah (06:25):
that's not what I was
gonna say.
That is a nice bonus, but, um,when I make mistakes, I don't
like it.
Doesn't mess anybody up.
And I'm the only person thatknows that I made mistakes,
which is nice.
Dad (06:38):
got it.
Understood.
Norah (06:39):
Um, what else?
It's also cool.
Well, it's a lot less time toset up and then I get to make my
own set lists.
So at least some fake ID, we allhad very different music tastes,
which caused not issues, but noteveryone wanted to play the
exact same songs.
So it's nice to be able to makemy own set list.
Dad (06:59):
I would say your music
taste is indie.
Is that a fair,
Norah (07:02):
Yeah, I just kinda listen
to
Dad (07:04):
indie alternative?
Norah (07:05):
just, I, have been quite
a Radiohead fan right now.
That's not really Indy,
Dad (07:09):
I'm gonna ask you about
that.
So put a, put a Thumbtack inthat one.
Don't let me forget to come backand ask you about the bands you
like.
Cause I wanna, I want to ask youabout that, but I wanna finish
talking about like, like, sowhat is it about being in a band
that you miss and what is itthat you liked about being part
of like a group instead of justlike normie the solo artist?
Norah (07:30):
Friends.
I like rehearsals a lot andplaying with'em.
It's really fun.
Dad (07:36):
like, the hang of being
Norah (07:37):
Yeah.
I prefer that.
Like, okay.
Like playing music was fun, butlike we got to goof around.
That was more fun.
um, yeah.
I mean, I met a lot of coolpeople, so I'm still friends
with'em.
So That's cool.
One of them is, my boyfriendnow, so that's pretty cool.
Um,
Dad (07:57):
That's is, is is he sit, is
he sitting listening to us
record?
Norah (08:01):
and he's headphones on?
Dad (08:03):
Oh yes.
Okay.
So he is there everybody
Norah (08:04):
no, he said he didn't
wanna spoil it for himself.
Dad (08:09):
I see.
Okay.
So yes, but you are now dating,um, the, the, the, not the
guitar player that quit, butthe, the, the original, the
other original guitar playerfrom fake IDs, your is your a
bow.
Norah (08:23):
Um, let's see, what else
do I
Dad (08:24):
Did that sound did, did
that, did that sound weird?
Norah (08:28):
I was just gonna skip
past it.
Um,
Dad (08:31):
sorry.
Norah (08:34):
uh, what else?
songwriting was fun.
It was a
Dad (08:37):
Songwriting.
As a group.
Norah (08:38):
yeah, well, it was
interesting.
I, we all very different ideas.
Oh, I've been in another band.
I was in social cues as well.
Dad (08:47):
Social cues with your yes.
That also played
Norah (08:50):
rock off we did not get
to the finals.
Dad (08:53):
The other cool thing about
the rock off fi getting to the
rock off finals was that fake IDgot to go into the studio and
cut a song.
Norah (08:58):
Yes, that was very
Dad (09:00):
so there is, so if you go
on the old Spotify or the apple
music search for fake ID, thesong was called good times.
It's a.
Awesome.
I, one of my favorite songs
Norah (09:11):
Well, you're biased.
Biased.
Dad (09:13):
I, know, but it's, but it's
also like you wrote it about
your deceased grandparents andit's just a very, it's just a
very lyrically.
I think it's just a really, justa really, really cool, it's a
really cool song that has a lotof a me meaning behind it that
I, that, that is part of my lifetoo.
So, um, so I love, I just lovethat song and I still listen to
it.
Probably all the streams of onSpotify are probably just me.
(09:36):
For for the last, probably like12 months.
Okay.
So you mentioned Radiohead.
Norah (09:42):
Oh, I love Radiohead.
Dad (09:43):
Let me ask you this.
And I'll, I'll give, I'll givemy list too, but if you were
like on a desert island and youhad your phone with you.
And wifi somehow.
but you couldn't call anybodycuz that would defeat the
purpose of being on a, you hadan old
Norah (09:59):
No, no.
You had like a, a, a, a, a CDplayer with, and this is like
your, your mix tape.
Dad (10:07):
Okay.
Even better.
If you could only listen tothree bands for the rest of your
life, what would those threebands be?
Norah (10:14):
Okay.
Probably adult mom.
I've very much so been intotheir, their rat up right now.
Um, they're cool.
So all the songs, just veryemotional and I like very
emotional music.
So
Dad (10:30):
Okay.
Norah (10:31):
Radiohead, um, I like
Radiohead ed for all of those.
Don't know my guitar teacher.
We're we're just gonna likelearn every song on this one
album.
Um, cuz it's fun.
So, so and what else?
I think probably the whitestripes.
Dad (10:53):
Interesting.
Norah (10:54):
just, I don't know
something about them.
Just vibes differently.
I'm a big fan.
Dad (10:59):
They're on my list too.
Yeah, they're on my
Norah (11:01):
I just feel like I know
so many of their songs.
I would have a very fun time.
Just like chilling.
Dad (11:06):
the white stripes are on,
are on my
Norah (11:09):
I I bet I could guess
your
Dad (11:11):
are, go ahead.
Norah (11:13):
On Monday sevens
Dad (11:15):
Old 90 sevens, definitely
on the list.
I could, I could listen to oldnine.
You know, me very well.
That would be my top three wouldbe old 90 sevens, white stripes.
And Peter Gabriel Give me a bandthat you've discovered that
probably no one else listeninghas heard of that you think
(11:35):
people should know and
Norah (11:36):
Oh, my gosh.
Okay.
Well, I've only listened to.
a couple songs from this band, but they have like 300 monthly
listeners on Spotify.
Um, they're called state house
Dad (11:45):
Well let's well, let's,
let's, boost that.
Let's boost that number up.
What are they called?
Norah (11:51):
house.
Dad (11:53):
State house.
Okay.
Norah (11:54):
music, but it's really
fun.
And I like it.
Dad (11:57):
How did you find them?
Norah (11:58):
Um, I just found this one
playlist actually, when I had my
own, my, Uh, Until Minecraftphase last year, one of the, um,
YouTubers I watched, she made aplaylist of songs that she
really liked and one of theirsongs is on there and I really
liked it.
So I add it to my playlist andthen I decided to check out more
of their music.
Dad (12:19):
Interesting.
State house.
Okay.
So when, when, um, when wepromote this, I assume that I
assume they're on the oldInstagram.
So when we promote this episode,we can, we can tag them and try
and try and get them some
Norah (12:32):
Oh, they're so nice.
They they're just like vibes, just like straight up vibes.
They're so fun.
Dad (12:37):
Where are they from?
Where, where are they from?
Do you know?
Norah (12:39):
they from?
Ryan's on my phone right now.
I'm need my phone.
Dad (12:43):
Oh, I got my phone.
Let me see.
Norah (12:45):
let's see.
Dad (12:45):
This is so exciting for the
listeners.
As I, as I Google a band.
It's the very visual, the veryvisual art of me typing
something on my phone on apodcast is awesome.
Norah (12:55):
they are from Boston.
Dad (12:57):
Okay.
State house band.
We make music and also live inBoston.
Well, that is a hell of adescription on the band camp.
Norah (13:06):
Yes.
Dad (13:07):
Oh, they're like kids.
Norah (13:08):
They're in college.
Dad (13:10):
All right.
I am gonna check out the statehouse because I think you, I
think you have really good tastein music and I'm gonna venture
to, I'm gonna venture to betthat I'm gonna, I'm gonna vibe
on state house as well.
Norah (13:19):
It's just like indie,
math rock, alternative college
rock.
Dad (13:25):
So here's the homework for
all the listeners go to band
camp or go to Spotify or go toapple music or wherever you get
your tunes.
check out state house, and then, either find us on, send us a
message on Instagram at no anddad show or on Twitter at Nora
and dad show.
Or email us, Nora and dad showgmail.com and let us know what
(13:48):
you think of Nora's music pick.
Oh,
Norah (13:52):
What's your music pick of
the week.
Dad (13:54):
Um, I am really digging the
new Frank Turner album,
Norah (13:59):
Ooh.
Dad (14:00):
I think is amazing.
It's by far his hardest, likemost punk album he's done, I
like Frank Turner cuz he writeswith a lot of, I like artists to
write with a lot of emotion andI'm really into like lyrics.
Norah (14:13):
like that too.
Look at that.
Dad (14:15):
I don't even at look at
that, so even if I don't dig.
I have to dig the music, butI'll, I'll over, I'll overlook
some shotty music.
If the song has really coolmeaning behind it.
And I dig the lyrics, FrankTurner happens to have both, but
he always writes very personallyrics.
but this, this album, just thisalbum just rocks it's really,
(14:38):
really, really good.
So if you don't know,
Norah (14:41):
band too.
Dad (14:42):
God, God.
Norah (14:44):
Well, if you have any
French listeners, um, there's
this one band called and theymake really cool music.
I think it's just like a do it'seither a do or a trio and they
just make cool French music.
So.
Dad (14:59):
There you go.
And I will also say while Idon't think that she's certainly
not.
She'll, she's someone thatpeople probably would've heard
of by now, but, um, I've beenlistening to, to Phoebe Bridgers
Norah (15:10):
You are a Farb
Dad (15:13):
What is, is that what her
fans
Norah (15:15):
yeah.
Dad (15:15):
FARs.
All right.
Well, I'm happy to be a Farb Ithink she's, I think she's
awesome.
Norah (15:20):
you have like the music
taste of a teenage girl.
Dad (15:23):
wonderful,
Norah (15:23):
maybe, maybe all my
friends just have the music
taste.
Dad (15:28):
All your friends have the
music taste of a 49 year old
guy.
Music is gonna keep me young.
It's fine.
I mean, I remember growing up.
Grandma would always play theold station in the car.
And it was always like musicfrom the fifties, which is fine.
Like, I can, I can appreciatethat now.
I didn't really, as a kid, I canappreciate it better now.
(15:49):
and I still like the music Ilistened to when I was your age,
I was into like the who and pinkFloyd and Genesis and all like
the, kind of the classic raw.
and I still very much like that, but, music is gonna help keep me
young by, by discovering newartists and, and Getting in
touch with kind of what's newand what people are just, people
(16:10):
are discovering on their own andit's, it's gonna help keep
Norah (16:13):
Need to get on the tos.
Dad (16:16):
so I am not getting on the
tos, but I, I am, I will
happily, I will happily callmyself a Farb.
at 49, I had not heard thatphrase yet, but
Norah (16:25):
Well It's because it's
because Nicki Minaj calls her
fans barbs.
So phoe BBER Phoebe calls herfans barbs, or maybe, maybe
that's what the fans callthemselves.
I'm not quite sure
Dad (16:38):
well, either way far me up,
baby, I'm happy to be a farm I
don't know what to do with thatat
Norah (16:50):
thank you everyone for
listening.
Um, you can find
Dad (16:52):
Right.
This has, this is,
Norah (16:54):
at Nora
Dad (16:55):
been a great episode.
Norah (16:57):
Um, and if you wanna
listen to my song, wish I was
your guitar.
It's on Spotify.
Um, as father mentioned earlier, you can listen to good times by
fake ID also on Spotify.
Um, Dad, where can they findyou?
Dad (17:16):
They can find me at Jon
Hyman or apparently, maybe far
behind men.
I don't know.
No, they can find me at JonHyman all over the place.
this was Should we, um, this wasan episode.
Should we play out with a littlebit of good times?
Norah (17:32):
Sure.
Dad (17:33):
You don't sound convinced.
Norah (17:35):
Sure.
Why not?
Dad (17:36):
Let's we'll play out with a
little bit of good
Norah (17:37):
0.0, zero, zero.
Something of a penny.
Dad (17:40):
There you go.
great talking to you as alwaysNora, we will see everybody next
week.
Thank you for listening.
Love you,
Norah (17:48):
Love you too.
Dad (17:49):
This is good times by the
band, formally, and I guess
they're still known as, fake ID.
Enjoy everybody.
We'll see you next week.
