Norah (00:01):
Hey Nora.
Dad (00:02):
Hey Nora,
Norah (00:03):
Hey dad.
Do you know
Dad (00:06):
do you know why I don't
like German sausages?
Norah (00:11):
Because they're
Dad (00:12):
Cuz they're the worst.
Norah (00:17):
Okay.
Dad (00:18):
How did, how did that
Norah (00:19):
one of your better ones.
Dad (00:21):
did, how did one of my
better ones?
I thought so too.
Did you see there was a.
Norah (00:28):
that said
Dad (00:29):
said that, um, that dad
jokes, uh, help kids develop
into healthy
Norah (00:35):
sent it to me.
Yeah, I know.
Dad (00:38):
Yeah, I know.
Did you see that though?
Did, did, did you read
Norah (00:40):
read it, but I saw it.
That,
Dad (00:43):
that, um,
Norah (00:44):
fathers
Dad (00:45):
fathers, this is what the
study concluded, that fathers
who embarrassed their childrenwith unfunny jokes teaches'em
how to overcome awkwardness andshow your children that
embarrassment isn't fat.
Norah (00:57):
you definitely,
Dad (00:58):
How do you like that?
Norah (01:00):
yeah,
Dad (01:04):
How you like them apples?
Norah (01:05):
don't know, what are we,
uh,
Dad (01:09):
are we, um, what are we
gonna talk about this week?
Norah (01:11):
about exchange students.
Welcome back to the
Dad (01:27):
Welcome back to the Nora
and Dad Show.
Uh, it's been a bit since werecorded because, uh, why has it
been a bit, since we recorded,um, a new episode?
I guess we stink and aren't asreliable as we thought.
Norah (01:41):
Yeah,
Dad (01:41):
to be, but,
Norah (01:42):
But I guess
Dad (01:43):
but I guess since this is
free and no one's paying us to
do this, I guess at the end ofthe day, you know what the heck
we're gonna record when we, whenwe wanna record and bring you
new episodes when we havesomething to say.
So, and this week we havesomething to say.
Um, welcome back to the Nor andDad show.
I am as always, uh, dad and I amhere with, uh, the lovely and
(02:06):
talented.
What's happening, Nora?
Norah (02:10):
much.
It is spring break.
I am happy.
Dad (02:14):
Yeah.
How's your, how's your, how'syour spring break going?
You, you're blessed with notjust one week of spring break,
but two weeks of spring breakevery single year.
They give you two weeks off forspring break, which is crazy
unheard of.
Norah (02:28):
I'm okay with it.
You're okay
Dad (02:31):
you're okay with the
spring, with the two weeks of
spring break.
Norah (02:34):
though in comparison to
other schools.
I think.
I guess
Dad (02:39):
I guess so this, this year
is kind of a boring spring break
Norah (02:43):
we went to Philly.
Dad (02:44):
gr gr Well, yeah, we don't
have grand vacation planned
because we're doing our grandvacation when school's out in
June, um, for Portugal.
But, um, uh, but yeah, we, wedid just return from
Philadelphia, which was a nice, which was a nice.
Norah (03:00):
It was, it was great.
Yeah.
Not a
Dad (03:03):
Yeah.
Not a super long visit with thegrand per, with the
grandparents.
Um, but we crammed a lot in, in,in like two
Norah (03:11):
did.
We,
Dad (03:13):
We, what did we do?
We went down to the Reddingterminal market to get, um,
Norah (03:19):
get
Dad (03:20):
uh, to get food primarily
for your brother because he's
gluten-free and they have thisstall there with the gluten-free
corn dogs and funnel cakes thathe really can't get anywhere
else.
And so he was very, very, veryhappy,
Norah (03:35):
I was happy with my meal
too.
Your lobster,
Dad (03:39):
your lobster mac and
cheese.
Norah (03:40):
Mac and cheese.
Yeah, I have a Turkey
Dad (03:42):
Yeah, I had a Turkey
sandwich.
That was fantastic.
You accidentally fructoseyourself.
Norah (03:48):
Yeah, it's okay.
Uh, bass ice
Dad (03:51):
uh, Bassett's ice cream,
which is really like super, it's
like the, the original likecraft ice cream in the us Like
it's, before there wasMitchell's or Jenny's or any of
the other like super craft icecream places, there's was
Bassett's that's been aroundlike forever.
Um, and who would've thoughtthat they would put high
(04:12):
fructose corn syrup in their icecream?
But you fructose
Norah (04:15):
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, and then,
Dad (04:19):
and then
Norah (04:21):
yeah, that was Friday
Dad (04:22):
Friday and then Saturday
your mom and I took a ride in
the very damp and cold rain togo watch your cousin, uh,
Robbie, who's at the NavalAcademy, um, Roe, he's on the
rowing team.
And, uh, we went up to Princetonto watch him row.
Um, you hung back, uh, withgrandma and grandpa and then.
(04:43):
Um, the gluten-free food Festcontinued with, um, with
cheesecakes on, uh, Saturdaynight with, from a place in, uh,
not far from grandma and grandpain Langhorn, pa.
Um, I think it was called, Ithink it was called Jay's.
Does that sound right?
Norah (05:00):
uh, yeah, it was Jay's
joint.
Yeah, Jay's,
Dad (05:05):
yeah.
Jay's like Jay's joint steak andHogans that not only has
gluten-free cheese steaks, but Ithink they have like a, an
entire separate.
Norah (05:13):
like an entire
Dad (05:14):
an entire separate
gluten-free kitchen that does,
uh, everything on the menu.
You pretty much was gluten-freefor the most part.
And, um, they had this enormous, like gluten-free pretzel roll.
It must, it must have been an 18inch, it must have been
Norah (05:28):
It was huge.
Dad (05:29):
But your, your, your
brother, he ate the whole thing
and he was in an absolute glory.
So, uh, big, uh, I'll, I'll dropa link in the, um, in the, In
the show notes to Jays, but itwas, I, I had a full gluten
cheese steak and it was alsoreally, really good.
So if you're in the Bucks CountyPA area or find yourself passing
(05:51):
through, uh, I give Jays uh, twobig, two big thumbs up.
Your brother gave it two, tworeally big thumbs up.
Norah (05:58):
their wings are really
good too.
Dad (05:59):
to Jays.
We.
Norah (06:00):
Yeah.
Yeah.
Dad (06:01):
Yeah.
Yeah.
Kudos DJs.
We appreciate you.
Your wings look good.
The fries were, I mean, nothingthere was, I mean, it wasn't, it
wasn't what I would call healthyfood.
Norah (06:11):
They had, their salad was
good.
Dad (06:12):
and, uh, your, your brother
hasn't eaten in two days since I
don't think he's been superhungry.
after he stuffed himself withthat giant sandwich.
Uh, but yeah, but we were, the,the food was, I, I, no, no
complaints.
Big, big thumbs up.
Uh, big thumbs up to Jay, so Ihave to call and find out where
they get those gluten-freepretzel rolls from.
(06:33):
We're not, if anyone knows, sendus an email, um, at, uh, uh,
noran dad show gmail.com.
But, um, we, um, Would love tofind out where they get those
pretzel rolls from and eitherbuy them off of them or have
them shipped to us or something.
Cuz they were, I tried it, itwas really, really good.
Would not have known, it was nothave known it was gluten-free.
(06:55):
So like most trips into Philly,it revolved around food.
Um, I got to take grandpa.
I got to take grandpa to hisradiation.
That was really cool.
I mean, for him it was a coolexperience for me, not for him,
cuz he had to go throughradiation, but, um, a, a cool
experience for me to get to takehim, um, and Tamara's his last
treatment.
So, uh, I know they listened.
So, um, yay Grandpa, we love youand we're glad that your
(07:18):
treatments, um, are over and I'mglad that I got to at least, uh,
have the experience of takinghim to one of
Norah (07:24):
and I got to go prom
dress shopping with.
So when you came
Dad (07:28):
When you did go prom dress,
you, you went successful prom
dress shopping with grandma.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Very successful.
So the,
Norah (07:35):
There will be no
Dad (07:36):
there will be no pictures
shared until said prom in
Norah (07:39):
Yeah.
It's gonna be a surprise.
Dad (07:41):
s.
S.
So we don't ruin the surprisefor, uh, for the boyfriend, uh,
who you wanna surprise with thedress.
But I, I saw the picture and youlooked, I mean, you're, I mean,
you're my daughter.
I think you always lookbeautiful, but you looked, you
looked beautiful in the dress.
It was, it was a really, it wasa really, really good dress for
you.
So I can't wait to see, uh, seeit on you, um, uh, officially.
(08:03):
Uh, at prom or at prom, promnight.
Anyway.
Norah (08:06):
Yeah.
Dad (08:07):
Yeah.
So, but that's, um, that'swhat's been going on with us.
But the big news in the Hymanfamily is that we're, um, we're
adding a child.
Norah (08:20):
Don't say it like that.
What you think like that?
I dunno.
I feel like that sounds weird.
Dad (08:26):
We're, we're, we're adding
a child where we have decided to
embark on an experience with anexchange student for the, uh,
upcoming school year for the2023.
Uh, right now, just the fallsemester 2023, um, school year.
Um, she is, well, let's, let'sback up.
(08:50):
We, this will not be our firstexchange student experience.
We, uh, had this experience nineyears ago.
You were in second grade.
Norah (08:59):
Right?
Mm-hmm.
Dad (09:00):
Right.
Um, with, um, our, our Germandaughter, Sarah, who we, uh,
loved to death and had, uh, anincredible, um, Year with her,
uh, uh, living in our home andwe have since been to Germany to
visit her.
And she's been back here tovisit us and mom was over in
(09:24):
Europe for work a couple yearsago and connected with her and
her family.
And so we have done a really, really good job over the last
nine years of keeping thatrelat.
Uh, keeping that relationshipgoing.
And, uh, when I say that I loveher, like one of my own kids, I,
uh, that's not an exaggeration.
I, I mean it from the bottom ofmy heart.
(09:46):
I really do.
I do think of, I think of her asmy third kid.
Um, and we decided when she leftus nine years ago, that we
weren't gonna do an exchangestudent experience again.
That she was, it was too good ofan experience that we didn't.
We didn't wanna risk having abad experience, and we also
(10:07):
didn't want to, we really didn'twanna be disloyal to her by
doing it again.
Um, and so we, for the last nineyears, even though the school
has asked us, I think onceyou're on the list, you're on
the list and the school's askedus, uh, numerous times if we
would take another exchangestudent.
Um, we have consistently saidno.
Norah (10:28):
and then
Dad (10:29):
and then we started
thinking about it.
Um, maybe a year ago we startedthinking about it, whether we
wanted to have that experienceagain.
But with Covid, we weren't quiteready to take someone into our
home.
Um, but now we are.
They, uh, uh, we saw an emailthat came through from the
school a couple weeks ago
Norah (10:51):
with a list
Dad (10:51):
with a list of, uh,
students.
Uh, you know, they give you liketheir first name and a bunch of
information about them, and onekind of struck both your mom and
me as someone who would be agood fit for our family.
So we decided we were gonna, wewere gonna jump in with both
feet and do this again.
So are you, are you excited tohave a, another
Norah (11:15):
I'm very excited cause I
get to be the older sister this
Dad (11:18):
Yeah.
Norah (11:20):
Oh, that's right.
Dad (11:21):
right cuz the, the, the
student that we're, that we're
taking on is in 10th.
She'll be in 10th grade.
You'll be a senior.
Norah (11:29):
know.
Yikes.
Dad (11:30):
Yikes.
Um, your brother will be afreshman.
So we'll have a ninth grader, a10th grader, and a 12th grader
all in the upper school.
Um, yeah, you will be the, youwill be the older, the older
sister.
That's way different cuz therewas a,
Norah (11:45):
gap
Dad (11:47):
A huge, a, a huge age gap.
There was a, an eight year agegap, um,
Norah (11:52):
yeah.
Eight year age
Dad (11:53):
yeah, an eight year age gap
between, um, you and Sarah when
we lasted the exchange studentthing.
So, um, so you are, are, are youready to show someone the ropes
of what it's like to be a, ahigh school student in America?
Norah (12:06):
hope so.
Um,
Dad (12:11):
Um, yeah, so it's, it's
really exciting.
We haven't met her yet.
The, uh, representative fromthe.
Norah (12:19):
uh, school
Dad (12:20):
school slash exchange
agency.
I think she pulls double duty,uh, was here last week to take
photos of the house.
Um, while we were on our trip toPhilly, I saw that our
application status had movedfrom.
Or like applicant to approved orpending to approved or whatever.
So I think it's now, I thinkit's just a matter of connecting
(12:43):
us, uh, officially with her sowe can, um, like Zoom or
FaceTime with her.
So we get to actually meet herand talk to her.
Um, and, uh, and then before youknow it, the summer will be over
and.
We'll be, uh, waiting at thebottom, bottom of an escalator
at the airport, uh, to meetsomeone in person.
(13:04):
So, I'm, I am, I am really superexcited for
Norah (13:08):
I'm more.
you're more excited
Dad (13:11):
You're more excited to have
a, to have a sister.
Norah (13:15):
it, it it
Dad (13:16):
It, it it is, it is
actually, it is actually really
cool for you because you'll be,um, able to do like activities
together at school.
You'll be, you, you'll be ableto, I mean, really have someone,
you know, close to your age toshare that high school
experience with, um, that alsolives in our home, I think, or
will live in our home.
I think it'll be really, reallycool for you.
Norah (13:36):
I'm excited They,
Dad (13:39):
they, uh, uh, she's only
committed for a semester.
Uh, what we were told was that alot of times they only commit
for a semester because they'renervous about coming overseas
and they don't want to commitfor a year not knowing what,
what the experience will belike.
And so I am, uh, but last yearor this year, for example, they
(14:01):
had three.
Students that committed for asemester and
Norah (14:06):
No, only with.
Dad (14:08):
semester.
Norah (14:09):
Oh, only two.
I
Dad (14:10):
Oh, only two.
I thought I heard.
I thought I
Norah (14:11):
no, one of them was my
advisor and he's not here
anymore.
Okay.
Well,
Dad (14:15):
Okay.
Well, two outta three.
Two outta three ain't bad.
As the song goes, so.
Norah (14:20):
All right.
So,
Dad (14:21):
So, um, all right.
Well, hopefully, uh, it's a, agood experience for her and she
wants to come and, and stay an
Norah (14:32):
I think we're pretty
Dad (14:33):
see how it goes.
Norah (14:34):
Yeah, I
Dad (14:35):
Yeah, I think so too.
Maybe, maybe we'll have to haveher on as a guest on a future
episode.
Norah (14:40):
I mean, we don't, we're
not, I don't know.
I feel like we're not thatdifficult.
Dad (14:46):
No, we're not.
I don't, I don't think we'rethat difficult at all.
I think we have a very nicewelcoming and open home for
people to come visit and or livein for.
Uh, For four or five months is,um, cuz her bedroom is the, or
the room that will be herbedroom is, is the guest
bedroom.
(15:06):
Um, and so that's, it was, um,we've called it Sarah's room
since she lived here nine yearsago.
Uh, we'll probably have to scrapthat name at least in the short
Norah (15:15):
no, it's Ryan's room,
Dad (15:17):
is that, yeah, that's where
Ry, that's where Ryan stays when
he's over.
Is he prepared to give hisbedroom up for a half a year or,
Norah (15:24):
just gonna move the, the
couch down to the basement and
then I'll sleep in the basement.
Dad (15:29):
And he'll, he'll, he'll
have to sleep in the basement
Norah (15:32):
Watch
Dad (15:33):
and watch Donovan play his
video games until three o'clock
in the morning.
Norah (15:36):
No.
He says we need to get blackoutcurtains for that room though
before she comes because he'sbeen making
Dad (15:43):
Oh, we can
Norah (15:44):
curtains to be able to
sleep.
Dad (15:45):
No, no, we can, yeah, we
can definitely do that.
We have the lights that lay thatfa, that that room faces the
front of the house.
And we have the, since, um,since Russia invaded Ukraine,
we've had blue anda lights outfront illuminating our house in
support of, in support ofUkraine.
So, uh, we'll have to the, the,the lights aren't going
anywhere, so we'll have tofigure out a curtain situation
(16:07):
for that room.
Norah (16:07):
curtains work cuz Ryan,
Ryan makes
Dad (16:09):
All right.
Norah (16:10):
ones with sheets.
So,
Dad (16:12):
Uh, yeah, I noticed, I
noticed that when I was cleaning
a couple weeks
Norah (16:16):
Otherwise you can't sleep
Dad (16:19):
Uh, well,
Norah (16:21):
Such is
Dad (16:22):
such is life.
So that's the, that's the big, that's the big news that's going
on in our house.
We'll, uh, update everyone, Iguess as we move through the
process.
And maybe we'll have a guest,uh, a, a guest with a German
accent on at some point, uh, atsome point in the future
episode.
So, All right.
(16:45):
Um, as far as the rest of yourbreak is concerns, uh, we're
going college, college shoppingtomorrow?
Norah (16:53):
Yeah.
Dad (16:53):
Yeah.
College shopping.
Well, I guess to by, by the timethis airs it'll be today,
Tuesday.
We're going college
Norah (16:59):
I'm excited.
Yeah.
We're gonna go
Dad (17:01):
Yeah.
We're gonna go look at where, where, where are we going to
look?
Norah (17:04):
State in the morning, in
Bald Wallace in the afternoon.
Right.
Dad (17:08):
Rights.
And then we'll do someout-of-town visits later on in
the spring, um, at some otherschools.
And so that's, that's Tuesday.
Uh, you have a gig Thursday at,uh, your,
Norah (17:21):
guess, place of
employment,
Dad (17:23):
um, your y your play, I was
gonna say like your home bar,
but like your, your, your homebase, your place of employment
at the old wine cellar.
Um, and that's the first.
Like many
Norah (17:33):
mm-hmm.
And then the week after
Dad (17:34):
go to
Norah (17:35):
um, at the Front Street
Social in Bura.
Dad (17:39):
Front Street Social where
you played a couple of
Norah (17:43):
they asked me back
immediately,
Dad (17:45):
Yeah, you had a, you had an
encore and then were immediately
asked back to come play anothergig.
So that was a super successfulnight.
Um, and then gigs kind of allthroughout the summer, so go to
Normy Music.
Dot com slash gigs for all ofthe information where you can
find, uh, miss
Norah (18:06):
some on the east side,
some on the west side,
Dad (18:08):
Yeah, all over.
All over Northeast.
All over northeast Ohio.
Um, yeah, this summer, eastside, west side.
Uh, if you got the side, she'sgot the guitar and the amp to
give you music.
So,
Norah (18:20):
okay.
Dad (18:20):
uh, all right.
anything anything else you wannaadd?
Norah (18:25):
Um, not particularly.
All right.
Dad (18:30):
All right.
Well then, my dear, uh, we'regonna call it an episode.
Uh, I'd say we'll see everyoneback in two weeks, but at this
point, I mean, who the heckknows?
It might be two weeks, it mightbe three, it might be a month.
We're gonna, we're gonna give itthe best shot.
But it might be, you know, Ithink when we, when we feel like
we have something to say, Ithink we'll be, we'll be back to
say it.
And maybe we're not gonna tryand force an episode every two
(18:52):
weeks if we don't have, um,
Norah (18:56):
talk about.
Yeah.
Fair.
Fair.
All right.
Dad (19:00):
All right.
Um, everyone have a great week.
We'll see everyone back, uh,
Norah (19:06):
whenever.
Yep.
In the,
Dad (19:08):
um, in the, yeah.
In the meantime, Nora, where canpeople find
Norah (19:12):
You can find me at Nora
Marie Music, nor with and h and
yeah.
Now you can find
Dad (19:20):
Uh, you can find me at John
Hyman, no, h j o n h y m a n.
And, uh, we'll see everyoneback, uh, whenever.
Love you,
Norah (19:29):
you too.
