(00:27):
valuable resources andinformation that empowers you to
take bold action towards yourhealth goals.
Before we dive in, make sure youfollow or subscribe to my show
wherever you're listening so younever miss an episode.
Ready?
Let's go! Hey everybody.
Oh my gosh.
It feels so good to be backrecording a podcast.

(00:51):
It's been a little bit.
I took a break.
I took a step back.
And you know, this last, youknow, six to nine months has
been a really big pivot year forme.
Pivot six to nine months, Iguess.
Just.
Towards the middle of last year,I had it on my heart that
something needed to change.
I was feeling a lot of pressurewith running ads and all of that

(01:14):
that came in it.
Keep in mind, I'm a dietitian.
I went to school for nutrition.
I am not an Instagraminfluencer.
I'm not an advertising ormarketing agency.
My love is truly with workingwith people and helping them
feel better and seeing thembecome more vibrant versions of

(01:35):
themselves as they start to feelbetter.
You know, as they're, you know,it's like a flower blooming in
the sun.
I love seeing people bloom.
They feel better, theirconfidence increases, their
relationships with their lovedones improve, their job
satisfaction improves.
That's my love.
And we get to do that throughnutrition and lifestyle changes.

(01:58):
And I just think that is so Ithink it's so cool that you can
change what you eat you know, and completely change up how you
show up in the world.
You really are what you eat andchanging up those inputs,
whether it's food and drinks orit's, you know, emotional inputs

(02:20):
or the people that you'resurrounding yourself with, it
yields to a different output.
Right.
And so I love watching thattransformation happen with my
patients.
And so I felt like so much of mytime and energy was just spent
focusing on trying to so Iwanted to tell people that I'm

(02:42):
good at that and get you guys totrust me because there's so many
people on there on there, on theinternet that honestly have no
business doing what they'redoing with their work.
You know, maybe they're notreally qualified, but they're
really good at marketing.
And so a lot of people have beenburned before, were, you know,
just were not trusting of themedical industry in general.

(03:05):
And me constantly feeling likeYou know, I wasn't really
connecting with people on adeeper level like I like to do
with my patients.
It was just service and youknow, really trying to get
people to believe that I couldhelp them.
It was just really exhausting.
So I shifted things up.
I changed some things.
I took a big slowdown to getsome things in order.

(03:28):
And so that's what I've beenworking on for the last six
months.
nine months really.
And so yeah, if you know alreadyyou may know I'm going to give
you guys a drum roll.
I don't know if you guys canhear this or not.
My microphone is actually reallygood at drowning out background
information, but here's the drumroll.
You can do it too if you can'thear it.

(03:49):
I am now in network withinsurance.
Awesome.
And Like, let me, let me explainthe magnitude of what that means
for you guys, okay?
I'm a network with Blue CrossBlue Shield, UnitedHealthcare,
and Medicare.
Many of you guys who havebenefits and insurance benefits

(04:13):
with these insurance character, carriers, characters, carriers,
they are characters sometimes, carriers, will pay zero.
So, zero dollars to get helpfrom me if we use your nutrition
benefits.
How amazing is that?
It was such a process for me toget credentialed with them and

(04:36):
to get contracted with them.
It was such a process for me tolearn the systems and the
billing and all of that.
that.
But I've gotten it down.
I've actually been acceptinginsurance for a few months now.
I think about November iswhenever October, November is
whenever it all started to cometogether.
I started this process lastsummer just for reference.

(04:59):
So I've been doing it a fewmonths now.
People are loving the benefitsgetting to use those benefits.
I think it's really unfortunatethat this benefit of getting
nutrition counseling for 0 forfree is not advertised to you
guys.
Y'all are paying.
so much in insurance premiumsand you have no idea that this

(05:21):
is a benefit that you'regetting, that you're, that you
have as part of that premiumthat you're paying into.
The reason it's 0, it's not,it's not 0 for every single
person.
Let me be very, very clear.
Every single policy is verydifferent, but I would say about
80%.
I would say 90 percent of mypatients right now are paying

(05:41):
zero, who are using theirinsurance benefits, are paying
me zero dollars.
I'm getting reimbursed from theinsurance carriers.
And the reason that is, is withthe Affordable Care Act,
nutrition counseling falls underthe preventive side.
Is it preventive or preventativeside of your benefit plan?

(06:02):
Okay So like you go in and getyour check up once a year your
well check.
It's zero dollars That's thesame the nutrition counseling.
Okay.
And with a lot of these plans, especially like a lot of the
Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO plansyou get unlimited visits with me
too.
There are some limits on some ofthe plans as to how, how many

(06:25):
times you can use that benefitin a year, in a calendar year.
It normally resets either inJanuary or whenever your policy
renews.
But y'all, it's huge news, and Itake care of the billing.
I'm not seeing patients everysingle place right now since I'm
doing one on one nutritioncounseling again.
It is what we call medicalnutrition therapy versus just

(06:47):
nutrition coaching.
So anyone can be a nutritioncoach, right?
Like, anyone can makesuggestions or recommendations
on things to do.
To generally eat healthier food, but if you have a disease state
or a condition and you'rereceiving you know personalized
nutrition recommendations forit.

(07:08):
It's falling under the medicalnutrition therapy side and only
registered dietitians areallowed to do that legally.
So, if you are seeing a healthcoach or a nutritionist who's
not credentialed with anythingfor diabetes or something like
that make sure that they'recollaborating with somebody,
right, who has the propertraining and everything.

(07:30):
So not seeing patientseverywhere, but the state laws
right now, so this may changethey are actually working on,
it's like a pact where they'retrying to do like equal so each,
so there's a, let me speak,sorry, there's a national board
that makes people registerdieticians, it's the Commission

(07:51):
on Dietetic Registration, butthen each state.
has its own licensure law, ormaybe they don't.
Some states don't have anylicensure laws, but some states
do.
And they're all different.
And so they're trying to come upwith a pact between states where
it's like, hey, I see yourlicensure laws, and I recognize
them, and they're similar tomine.
So like, If they're registeredin your, in your state, they can

(08:14):
see patients in my state andvice versa.
That's in the works.
It's been in the works for awhile, so no idea whenever it's
going to be done.
So this, this list willhopefully grow whenever that
gets passed.
But right now, Texas,California, Colorado, Virginia,
Arizona, Georgia, and Indiana.

(08:35):
If you're in one of thosestates, and you're needing some
support, and you have Blue CrossBlue Shield, United, or Medicare
and you're wanting to use thosebenefits.
reach out to me and let's have aconversation.
I have on my website which isdown in the show notes like a
list of questions.
I have all my patients do thisbefore their first session so

(08:56):
that there are no surprises.
to verify your benefits.
But before you book a session, you can also do it.
There's a list of questions onmy website.
You need to call the number onthe back of your card and I tell
you exactly what to ask them asfar as coverage.
So you can know exactly whatkind of benefits you do and
don't have before you evenschedule a session with me.
Like I said, I, I require all ofmy new patients to do this just

(09:19):
so.
Everyone is really clear aboutwhat's covered and what's not.
It helps me bill appropriatelyand making sure that, you know,
you're not surprised you know, down the road.
So.
That's great news.
What happens if I'm not, if I'mnot in network with your
insurance carrier?
So say you have Aetna or Cignathat's okay.

(09:42):
Or if you don't have insuranceor, or like us, so Joe and I,
we, you and our family, we use aChristian health sharing
organization.
That may actually have somecoverage.
I'll speak to that here in justa minute.
And if you're with one of theseother carriers that I'm not in
network with I still haveaffordable cash rates I'm not
going to say them here becausethey may change and I don't want

(10:02):
to have to rerecord this Butthey're on my website as well.
Okay, they're they're reallyclear on my website So let me
know if you guys have anyquestions There's a contact me
form on my website all mycontact information is on my
website.
I'm open as a book reach out Youknow, let me know what questions
you guys have so with theChristian Health Sharing
Organizations Joe and I are bothself employed and insurance is

(10:26):
really expensive.
And so many years ago now golly, probably almost a decade ago, we
switched over to ChristianHealth Sharing Organization.
We actually were with onecompany and then a few years ago
we switched to a differentcompany.
And with this current companythat we're at it's Samaritan
Ministries.
We've had a wonderful experienceand I've actually had a patient

(10:49):
with them.
able to get some of her serviceswith me reimbursed through
Samaritan Ministries.
So that is a possibility.
So if you are using one of thoseChristian health share
organizations, reach out to meand I'm happy to provide
whatever information they needto get you reimbursed.
I think with, with likeSamaritan, Per like condition or

(11:11):
disease diagnosis, right?
So if you've been diagnosed withIBS from your GI doc and they
refer you to me You know forhelp with that It would you know
kind of fall under that healthneed if you will But we can you
know double check with them andmake sure before before we see

(11:32):
each other.
So that's what happens if, ifyou're not with Blue Cross Blue
Shield United or, or Medicare.
Medicare, I'll also say like, just to be really candid their
insurance coverage is fornutrition counseling is not the
best.
They only cover kidney disease.
Not on dialysis.
I'm not a dialysis dietitian.

(11:52):
That, that, you need to seesomebody who's very specialized
in that.
But like the, you know, earlierstages of kidney disease and
diabetes.
Those are the only two thingsMedicare will cover.
So if you don't, even if youhave a supplement, it's still
just those conditions forNutrition counseling.
I'm really hopeful that thatwill change in the future
because it needs to change Butright now that's the case.

(12:15):
That's where we're at.
That's what we've got So if youdon't have diabetes or kidney
disease, you would just bepaying me those those cash rates
that I mentioned before.
And then I wanted to speak togut health for just a minute,
too.
So a lot of you guys found methrough Instagram about gut
health, you know, all of that.

(12:37):
I've done so many episodes onhere about gut health and that
was another reason I wanted todo insurance.
And, and step back a little bitfrom all of the social media
marketing, I felt a littlehemmed in with what I could talk
about.
I, I chose to go into the fieldof, of like the specialization

(12:57):
of gut health because it impactsthe whole body, right?
If you're struggling to loseweight or you have an autoimmune
condition you know, or somethingelse that doesn't seem to be an
obvious like GI symptom.
If you don't address gut healthand if it's a problem like it is
for most people, your resultsare going to be really limited.

(13:21):
But trying to explain that tosomebody in an Instagram post
gets really tricky, right?
It's like, I, why are youtalking about gut health?
I'm trying to lose 30 pounds, you know, like, I think, okay,
maybe that connection is alittle bit well established now,
but you, you get what I'msaying.
Like it's, it's not there reallyapparent need or apparent reason

(13:43):
for, for seeking support from adietitian.
And so I felt like, you know, kind of all I could.
to is this like IBS type symptomsituation and really so many
more people benefit from guthealth.
So with my patients now, whetherthey're coming to me for some
weight loss or an autoimmunecondition or something like

(14:04):
that, like yes, we are lookingat doing some specific
interventions for their goals.
That's always my MO, likepersonalized nutrition is what I
do.
I don't do like a protocoltemplate that I push out to
everyone.
I don't have every singlepatient start on the same 28 day

(14:28):
diet or anything like that.
I don't have every single persondo the same elimination diet,
and I know there's a lot ofpractices out there who do it.
I think they have legitimatereasons for doing it.
That's not how I practice, okay?
I'm a hundred percentpersonalized based on your
goals, your needs, your desires, your bandwidth to make changes.
We do all of that together.
together.
Okay.

(14:48):
And so, you know, we're, we'relooking at gut health as I
create your personalized plan.
That is going to be aconsideration, right?
Just like sleep and exercise andwhat you're eating and, and
water hydration status andstress.
Gut health is kind of another.
thing that we have to look atbecause if it's not working

(15:10):
right, if it's inflamed, if, youknow, those good organisms,
those good tummy bugs aren'tmaking the things that they need
to make that help support yourgut lining and the nutrients
that they make, the rest ofeverything else is going to not
work.
It's the same thing as like, Youknow, if, if someone is trying
to lose, let's go back to that30 pound example of someone's

(15:31):
trying to lose 30 pounds andthey're eating, you know, a
whole foods diet and all ofthat, but they're getting four
hours of sleep through sleep atnight and their stress is
through the roof.
They're not going to lose thatweight, right?
It has to be all of thedifferent things, or maybe they
do.
And then more some, right?
Then you hear about people likelosing too much weight because
they're so stressed out.
So they're, but they're notgoing to achieve their health

(15:52):
goals, right?
If, if, if they're not havingthe whole picture, the whole
package.
So while you may not see mespeaking only about gut health
going forward It's still a bigpart of what I do with every
single patient.
I just don't want to feel likeI'm confined to only to only gut
health, right?

(16:13):
Because our bodies have a lotmore greater, deeper needs for
nutrition.
Gut health is a huge part of it,but it's not the only reason,
it's not the only people withgut symptoms aren't the only
people who can benefit fromworking with me.
Does that make sense?
Cool.
So that's my big announcement.
That's kind of what's been goingon over here.

(16:35):
I'm not sure what the frequencyis going to be on this podcast.
I'm kind of trying to figure outwhere I want it to go, what I
want to do with it.
I may just do like somequarterly updates.
I may do once a month episodes.
I don't think it's going to beweekly, honestly.
I'm, I'm seeing a lot ofpatients and so my time is very
limited.
But I would like to keep itgoing, so it may just be kind of

(16:56):
as things come up, as topicscome up that I think y'all would
benefit from hearing, maybe Irelease an episode.
So anyways, next steps.
Contact information is below.
Head to my website to check outyour insurance benefits and
verify what would be covered.
Reach out to me with anyquestions.
And of course, you can go ontomy website and schedule an

(17:16):
appointment.
And like I said, you're going tobe filling out one of those
verification of insurancebenefits forms anyways.
So you're going to have a reallygood understanding of what's
covered before we ever evenmeet.
So, that is all for now.
Thank y'all.
so much for your support.

(17:36):
