On the latest edition of “The Parting Schotts Podcast,” Daily Gazette of Schenectady (N.Y.) sports editor Ken Schott opens the show with a tribute to legendary Philadelphia Flyers goalie Bernie Parent, who died Sunday at the age of 80. The Hall of Famer Parent helped the Flyers win consecutive Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975.
The Union women’s hockey team opens its season Friday against Franklin Pierce in the first college hockey game to be played at M&T Bank Center. Schott has interviews with Union head coach Tony Maci and players Stephanie Bourque and Karianne Engelbert.
Gazette associate sports editor Will Springstead comes on the show to talk about Union College football. He looks back at last Saturday’s win over SUNY Morrisville and previews Saturday’s Liberty League opener against St. Lawrence.
Schott talks New York Rangers hockey with Jim Cerny, executive editor of Forever Blueshirts. They also reminisce about their years covering the independent baseball Northeast League. Schott covered the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs, and Cerny was the radio play-by-play announcer for the New Jersey Jackals. They also talked about Cerny’s broadcast partner Kevin Burkhardt, who is the lead NFL announcer for FOX Sports.

Cardiac Cowboys
The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
