Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to the potty ology experience with your host
Marcus Prentice.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Hey party, people Marcus here, and I'm here again
today with Emma Dijon, thegrooviest funkiest party, animal
of Melbourne general manager offeel-good events.
How's life going, Emma.
It's wonderful.
It's wonderful.
That's good.
Yep.
That's good.
What's been happening in yourlife, anything exciting?

Speaker 3 (00:33):
I think just planning, weddings and parties
and all the fun stuff, you know, organizing warehouses and yay.
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Oh, during Corona.
Great good stuff.
All right.
In today's podcast, we're goingto talk about a style and
choosing a style or a theme, um,depending on which way you want
to go.
This is something we know a fairbit about being event, party,
decorators and winning.
So we can talk about it for daysand days and days, but we won't
bore you with all that stuff cango on.

(01:00):
So we're going to talk about thebenefits of choosing a
particular theme or style.
Um, and I guess one of the, or Iknow one of the key benefits of
choosing a theme and it can, itdoesn't necessarily have to be a
particular theme.
It could just be a certain lookor a certain color scheme.
Is this going to make yourplanning whole lot easier from

(01:23):
the very beginning?
So if you can come up with thispretty soon, like in the
planning, um, even potentiallybefore you even choose your
venue, it may even help withvenue choice.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
She helped with venue choice.
Yeah.
It's amazing to know that

Speaker 2 (01:37):
If you know, you're going to have your party at
home, obviously that might be inyour head from the very
beginning, um, knowing then whatsort of style or theme you want
to do.
Um, and it doesn't matter whatsort of event even weddings have
a certain style or themes inEmma's case, getting married
next year, you've got a theme ora tropical style, I guess, for
that.
So yeah, even weddings now havestyles and it just makes life a

(01:58):
whole lot easier.
So if you know, your wedding isgoing to be in Emma's case,
tropical, everything you thinkof is going to be tropical.
If you know, some people don'twant a theme, they might just
want pink or blue, or it mightbe a first birthday and it's a
boy's first birthday andwhenever the blue or a girl's
first birthday and they wanteverything pink.
So just, yeah, it just makeslife a lot easier.

(02:20):
Um, choosing a particular theme.
So maybe a Hollywood or winterWonderland or Arabian, or those
types of themes or so willreally help in your planning
because it gives you an end goalof what, uh, what do I want to
achieve

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Easier to plan with those that's right.
And

Speaker 2 (02:35):
As we say, sometimes if you haven't picked a venue
yet, but you know, you want todo a beach party saying,
choosing a venue, maybe downthat looks over the beach might
be obviously an obvious choice.
Uh, whereas if you didn't knowthat you might choose one out in
the Bush and go, well, itdoesn't really matter.
Um, but it depends on how muchof the theme you want to get
into.
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
Yeah.
I guess if you select the venuefirst and not the theme, you
might go pick the ballroom, let's say, and then you're like,
I want to do, I want to dorustic.
And you're like how I'm going todo to get these things.
And then you have to change yourwhole thought process to do a
whole nother theme because youhaven't picked the right venue.
So pick the theme first.
I think that's the key

Speaker 2 (03:15):
And that could end up costing you money, extra money,
because you need to spend moreon decor as well.
So yeah, a lot of people quiteoften, you know, they have
chosen their venue and thenrealize there's twice as much
work to decorate it

Speaker 3 (03:29):
And the money, it might be cheaper the venue, but
it costs you more to decorate.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
That's right.
Yeah.
And there's amazing how manypeople hire venues and actually
don't like the look of itbecause they've got in mind,
they're going to change it allanyway.
And you're like, well, yeah, maybe you could have chosen a
cheaper venue for that reason.
Um, so one of the best, some ofthe benefits, Emma, you think of
choosing a particular theme orstyle.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
Well, as we've just touched on it, it does make the
planning process a lot easier.
You said it sort of flows.
So you can select all the decorfor the room entertainment.
You know, you look atentertainment and find what's
going to suit that theme.
So if you're having a 1920 same,a jazz band at the start, so
more relaxing sort of music, andthen maybe some dances that a

(04:10):
1920s letter on so much easierfor everyone to go across the
board.
If you've got multiple peopleorganizing a function, let's say
it's a corporate, everyone'squiet across it with a theme.
That's right.
If you haven't got a theme or astyle, you're sort of all over
the place, it's sort of like, there's no sort of like
direction.
So having a theme is reallygood.
I think in regards to makingsure that the whole process is

(04:31):
quite easy for you.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
That's right.
And, and if you're going thefull on theme, you can then get
people to dress up, which justadds to the theme even more.
And, and you may think are, butpeople don't want to dress up.
I know when we've organizedfunctions, we quite often do a
theme because that's what we do.
And we do say to people, we'dlike you to dress up, but we
also make it optional as well.

(04:52):
Cause we don't want people notto show up just because they're
not dressing just because theydidn't want to dress up, but we
find what 99% of people willdress up.
And a lot of those will go allout.
And the good thing about certainthemes, whether it be Hollywood
or say it's a, a beach party orsomething like that, people it's
the people's interpretations.
So funny watching them allarrive.
That's right.

(05:13):
So we, when we did a sixtiestheme party, everybody dressed
up very different.
Some went crazy and all that, and others were a lot more
subtle, but it really makes adifference.
So just seeing everybody dressedup, even before you've done any
decor or anything else canactually add energy and fun to
the room.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
I think people come, they don't even look like
themselves.
So they don't even care whatthey look like.
They're more relaxed as theywalk in, um, being something
else or someone else than theyare when they walk in the door.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
That's right.
They lose their inhibitions andthey're already in a, in a
different party member.
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
They're there putting themselves at black coming in an
actual dress up anyway.
So they're already,

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Yeah.
And it's amazing how the clothesand choosy aware can affect how
the party can go.
And a lot of people wouldn'tthink about that, but I've seen
it happen many times, especiallywith theme parties.
Yeah.
It really does make a bigdifference and get add to the
party energy in the party fund.
So something really important,um, to think about, um, key

(06:09):
thing of, uh, uh, styling avenue or, um, decor is, um, it
stimulates a guest five senses.
Now we've talked about thisbefore.
Um, but the way the room lookswhen people walk in can have a
big impact on the function andthe guests experience, which is
what the most important thing ishere.
So, um, if the room is fullydecked out so that it's fully

(06:31):
transformed and is, uh, youknow, a full beach party or a
full Hollywood theme or winterWonderland theme, whatever it is
, uh, really makes a differenceto how people feel when they
walk into that space.
Um, if you have the budget forit, the more you can do the
better.
I don't think you can overdo itin when it comes to themes.
Um, and obviously budget willdetermine how much of that you

(06:53):
can do, how far you go down thatroad.
But sometimes, you know, andI've seen a lot lately special
on Instagram.
There's, um, a lot of, I guess,more of a, like a photo backdrop
or a display and people spendall this money on that, but it's
only a display.
It's not, uh, it doesn't reallystimulate the guests sensors.
They walk in and go, Oh, thatlooks nice.
It's pretty.
But yeah, but it's not really animmersive theme that makes

(07:16):
people feel a certain waybecause the whole room is
transformed.
Yeah.
Um, so yeah, decorating yourspace, you know, to as much as
you can.
And sometimes it's about, youknow, being creative and having
an imagination.
It's not about spending more andmore, more money.
Um, if you've got lots of money, you might be able to spend lots

(07:37):
on props and that sort of thing, but even things like balloons,
balloons, garlands, and allthose sorts of things are super
popular at the moment, a huge,um, they will add atmosphere to
the space, but again, it's onlya certain part of the atmosphere
that they're going to add to.
So visually they're going toimprove that, but you've still
got to think about those otherfive senses to be stimulated as

(07:58):
well.
Um, so that it creates a greatexperience, not just visually,
you know, it's great to see it.
Um, but it doesn't sort of domuch else.
So, um, yeah.
So, you know, decorating yourspace in a certain theme is
definitely,

Speaker 3 (08:14):
Yeah.
Well it, for example, your 40thbirthday, having that jungle
theme, we had all the reptiles, they asked, we had black liberal
crocodiles and frogs and, andjust everyone just watching them
during the night, go over tothem and touch them and take
photos with them and interactwith them.
They would just, it was just, everyone was so blown away by
walking into there, having allthat there, as well as how
awesome it looked at the sametime.

(08:36):
Yeah.
It does really add to theatmosphere.
It's just another touch pointfor people to be like, that's
what people remember.
He had crocodiles

Speaker 2 (08:45):
Who does that Mark's Prentice desk.
And then just to be different,we had Michael Jackson
impersonator as well, which Ithought it didn't really go with
the jungle party, but it was hisdances.
And

Speaker 3 (08:56):
You know, that that party went off.
Like it was a really good spaceand size of space and, you know,
just all those touch points, touch a huge difference.
You know, having candles, we hadfood like, and all the food was
quite stimulating with all sortsof, you know, candy jars and
things people could touch.
So it does make sense.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
You'd hope I'd be able to throw a half some party
if you, yes.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
It's a, it's a good one to remember.
They're good touch points forthose five senses

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Then sort of leads into another thing that, uh, we
quite often talk about andthat's novelty having something
that's different or unique.
Uh, and people love novelty.
Um, if you, I, I don't know ifyou've noticed in society in
recent years, but$2 shops andcheap shops are kicking goals
because there's lots of littlethings.
You never know what you're goingto find in there.

(09:40):
And maybe because it's cheap aswell, but it's like a, it's like
a kid in a candy store.
You go into these shops and evenBunnings is got novelty to a
large degree.
Like you go in there and it'slike, what am I going to find
today?
You go in there to buy one thingand buy 10 different other
things because it's exciting.
So it's the same with parties.
Like you want to createsomething that people aren't

(10:02):
expecting, so maybe crocodilesor dancing girls or, um,
whatever it is, something that'sdifferent and unique that people
may not have seen all the time.
It might be something as simpleas a lot of dance floor.
Now, not a lot of people seethose, every functional party.
So it's something fun andsomething a bit different as
well.
If you've just got the same oldstuff that everybody else has,

(10:24):
then it's going to be an averageparty like everybody else's.
And as we've said before, ifyou're going to go to the effort
of organizing a party, all thestress and time and money and
everything else, think, youknow, if you put a bit of time
in, into the thinking of whatcan I do to make it a bit
different, um, you know, itmight be just you, you're doing
a 1920 steam and you've got anold movie playing in the
background and you know, it canbe something, you know,

Speaker 3 (10:47):
Even that expensive, it's just the little things that
make a difference.
Like you might find a cave, people don't dress up, you just
have at the door, um, you know, pills like strings of pills that
people can put on.
So they feel like part of theatmosphere, if they're not
dressed up for just littlethings like that, you know, if
having a fluoride theme, getthose really cool sunnies, you
can get that a bright, fuller, and you know, people can wear
them while they're dancing.
And there's so many things youcan do that are fun.

(11:08):
And just add this anotherelement to add.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Yeah, that's right.
So novelty is a big thing andsomething that we try to
encourage as much as possible,um, because it will make your
party unique and it will give agreat party story to tell.
I went to this party on theweekend and they had crocodiles,
or I got bitten by a snake orthat'd be really what that, but
yeah, that's right.
And so, yeah, novelty big things.

(11:30):
So, yeah.
So yeah, lots to think aboutwhen it comes to style and
theming.
But if you think about thesethings earlier in the, in your
planning, then it's definitelygonna help, um, you know,

Speaker 3 (11:41):
Make things a bit easier.
Yep.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
Yep.
So think about your guestsexperience.
What's going to help, uh,improve that and make it better
and choosing a style or a theme,as we say, even if it's just a
color scheme will make your lifea lot easier.
Yep.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
That's an easy one.
I think that's really quite apopular one for 21st and that
sort of thing at the moment thatpink theme or they'll have, Oh,
I love Tiffany blue or somethinglike that.
Yeah.
I think a lot of people aredoing the colors.
Cause I don't want to do aHollywood theme or went to
Wonderland.
They're not, that's sort of notwhat they're thinking at that
age.
They want us to, Oh, I love pinkor I love red or I love green.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
That's right.
And it's easy to make it, youknow, it's quite simple to use
lighting and stuff like that tocreate that sort of atmosphere
and look yeah,

Speaker 3 (12:21):
Because everyone will come, let's say, they said, Oh,
let's everyone come dressed upgrain.
And then the person's birthday, they then wear bright red or
something.
That's becoming quite a popularsort of thing as well.
So yes.
Yeah.
It's still a style.
It's still a theme for you towork towards, but it's nothing
too.
Yeah,

Speaker 2 (12:35):
That's right.
And the way, even if it is justa color scheme, so pink or blue,
um, it changes the way peoplefeel.
So the color of the space makespeople feel a certain way.
Yeah.
So if it's blue, they'll feelblue.
No, not necessarily

Speaker 3 (12:47):
Red.
That was all very happy.
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (12:49):
Oh no.
So yeah.
Look, you know, the colors

Speaker 2 (12:56):
Do enhance, Hey, people feel when they walk into
the room, you know, maybe evenbeing able to change those
colors can make a big differenceas well.
So hopefully guys that will giveyou some ideas on choosing a
style and theme.
