Here are my takeaways:
At 16, moving to a different country, learning a new language and having to say goodbye to all your friends, your family and everything familiar can lead to struggles getting through high school.
The Ontario school system and the structured learning environment is not designed well to welcome and help nurture newcomer youth.
A creative soul Ali’s choices were architecture, film studies and photography. He studied photography in university and graduated with a BA. He wanted to do what he loved and make money, but soon realized that photography is an intensely competition field.
While traveling in South Asia he fell in love with teaching, and returned to Canada to get his B. Ed and then his M. Ed.
He values the “accidental discoveries” that can happen once we get past our fears.
His journey took him to Pond Inlet in Canada’s north where he discovered how the beauty of the Inuit people.
He is proud of his friendships with his Inuit friends, and proud of his choice to follow a vegan diet out of respect for animals. He is proud of being service to others, and after realizing that he was starting to lack the energy needed to be an elementary school teacher, decided to work in the non-profit world – all while getting his Ph.D.
Ghandi is his role model and a motivational quote “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in service of others”.
See, I told you – he is a lovely human being. And I am so lucky to work with him, and also his beautiful wife Pantea.
