SPEAKER_00 (00:54):
Welcome back to the
Punchline Podcast, a show about
the perils and pitfalls ofstarting a business.
And today we're talking aboutmarketing, but not just any
marketing.
We're talking about the geniusthat is Cowboy Carter.
Because this time going around,Beyonce did not come to play.
(01:18):
Beyonce created business.
a cultural phenomenon that is anopportunity, if you will, for
all entrepreneurs.
So if you've been payingattention, especially with the
drop of her new merch, herSacred line and then her Sir
(01:43):
Davis line, all of that has beenincorporated into her show now.
So we're going to talk about itand if you're an entrepreneur
and you're not taking advantageof these marketing opportunities
when Beyonce comes to your city, then what are you doing?
(02:04):
You're missing out on a lot ofcoins that you're leaving on the
table and we're going to talkabout it today.
Let's get into it.
So Beyonce, she didn't just dropan album.
She gave us a cultural moment.
And now that Cowboy Carter isbasically galloping worldwide to
(02:27):
a city near you, we're going totalk about that for just a
little bit.
We're going to talk about thefact that she started her tour,
I believe at the beginning ofMay, and it's going to go all
the way to the end of June.
And she is traveling.
She started in LA.
She's doing five days in LA.
She's going, she came toHouston.
I'm in Houston, by the way.
(02:47):
I just went to her show and thisis what inspired me to make this
episode about the marketingbecause I saw so many phenomenal
opportunities for people like mewho are entrepreneurs who need
to be taking advantage of theseopportunities.
So we're going to talk about it.
(03:07):
But She's going to be, she wasin LA.
She's been in Chicago.
She's good.
She's in Houston and she's goingto Atlanta.
She's doing five days inAtlanta.
She's going to DC.
She went to New York and shewent to Paris and London.
And then she's going to end inVegas.
(03:29):
All of these opportunities forpeople who live in these cities
are endless.
And we're going to talk aboutthat.
We're going to talk about howyou can turn her presence or
other opportunities like thisinto a profit for your business.
And I think it just goes withoutsaying that these are things
(03:53):
that these are opportunitiesthat if you ever wanted to know
how to market yourself, yourbusiness, your product, Take
some notes from Beyonce.
Take some notes from the CowboyCarter tour and also other
opportunities, even, well, we'llget to that.
(04:16):
I'll talk about that in just afew minutes, but we're going to
use Cowboy Carter tour as ourpoint of reference.
So I'm going to just give youguys some tips and information
about how you can take advantageof Of the fact that she's coming
to your city.
(04:36):
Okay.
So first off, with Beyoncecoming to all these different
tours, the marketing in yourcity, that's just going to set
the stage.
for opportunities that are goingto be available to you.
(04:59):
You need to start off with ageo-targeted content.
That means that Beyonce in NewYork or Cowboy Carter in New
York.
These are your hashtags, ofcourse, but that's how you
target your audience for thepeople who are going to be
interested in what you'reselling I think that is the most
(05:22):
important thing that needs to besaid and understood, that
Beyonce has created your targetaudience for you.
All you got to do is study them.
You know that Beyonce fans donot care about cost.
They don't care about rain, snow, sleet, or shine.
(05:45):
They're going to support becauseshe has a loyal fan base called
the Beehive.
So you need to be marketing tothe Beehive.
You need to be thinking aboutevent partnerships that you
could take advantage of in thatcity.
You need to consider pop-upplacements.
And I'm going to tell you aboutthings that happened in Houston.
(06:08):
In Houston alone, everything wascreated around Beyonce's coming.
Luckily, Two things werehappening.
It was quite a few thingsbecause Pride was going on in
Houston as well.
There was a Pride festival.
But also, Houston, there was avery popular DJ called DJ Screw,
(06:33):
and there is a DJ Screw Day inHouston.
It is June 27th.
Well, Beyonce was coming June28th and then 29th.
That's Saturday and Sunday.
On Friday, was DJ Screw Day.
So if in fact, you know thatBeyonce is coming during this
time, this is the time that youcan create events and
(06:56):
opportunities.
If you have a restaurant, youneed to have a Cowboy Carter
night, day, event, menu, drink, something that commemorates the
fact that Cowboy Carter iscoming to town.
And that is Just your marketingshould be all around that.
(07:18):
And then you need to, if youhave a restaurant, of course,
you need to have a specialdrink.
And you need to, if you have SirDavis, you need to incorporate
Sir Davis.
You need to have Sir Davisthere.
And these are things thatBeyonce did at the concert.
That's what makes it even moreamazing.
(07:39):
Let's say you want to have anevent for yourself.
The number one thing you need todo is build your community.
This is a way that you're goingto.
And if you haven't alreadycreated that community, loyal
fan base, this is the time youdo it.
You start planning your eventand you start creating FOMO
(08:02):
around that event to the pointto where, one, people do not
want to miss and they are notgoing to forget and they're
going to sign up, they're goingto follow, and they're going to
get involved.
You need to have some type ofevent interest.
You need to create somethingthat gets the people interested
so that they want to come toyour event And you could do that
(08:25):
with some type of theme, whatever your theme is.
Cowboy Carter could be yourtheme.
Okay, so now that you knowyou're going to start
geo-targeting, you're looking atpartnerships within your city
for Beyonce or it could even beChris Brown concert, the Boy's
(08:52):
Mind Tour is coming.
You should have something.
You should be working onsomething.
And you got plenty of time toplan that.
That's all the way in a fewmonths.
So you could be thinking aboutwhat you're going to do.
Even for Essence, if you'regoing to Essence Festival, you
need to have something ready.
(09:12):
to get people interested inwhatever you have going on if
you're in the city of NewOrleans.
It should be Essence FestivalNew Orleans, and you should be
telling people where to eat, where to go, what to wear, what
to bring.
You could be telling them wherenot to go.
You could be telling them...
(09:36):
about places that they shouldavoid, all those type of tips.
You should have reels createdaround that and videos and all
type of content that you cancreate regarding Essence
Festival.
If you're going to be in EssenceFestival, you need to be telling
people.
You need to tell them thatyou're coming.
You need to tell them where theycan find you and what you're
(09:59):
going to have.
And you should be Telling themthat you have a limited edition
something that they can only geteither for Cowboy Carter,
Essence, or the Boy's Mind Tour.
That's how you create Thecommunity that you're in for
(10:21):
people to see what you have andto test it out.
You need a QR code for yourstuff and you need something
that you're going to give them.
You need to be thinking.
And I think what a lot ofentrepreneurs forget, and this
goes along with networking aswell.
(10:42):
What reason does a stranger haveto connect with you?
If you're offering them nothing, you have to have a mutually
agreed upon item for, I mean, inorder for a mutually agreed upon
situation to occur, you need tohave something that's going to
(11:07):
entice the people that you wantto try your stuff.
If you don't have that, whatreason do they have to try your
stuff?
They're not going to beinterested unless you have some
type of phenomenal product thatyou can just say, hey, come over
here and try this.
You're going to love it.
I mean, and they may try it, butto get them to come and try it,
(11:28):
you need to at least give themsomething.
So with these pop ups, too, there were different pop ups in
the city.
For when Beyonce came toHouston, her show is going on
right now, the Sunday nightshow.
Then she's leaving and she'sgoing to her next city.
(11:48):
But y'all need to be ready inthe next city.
Whatever city she's going tonext, and I think it's D.C.,
y'all need to be ready.
Beyonce, you should already havean activation, a product ready.
Even if you're introducing aproduct, you need to introduce
it with some type of CowboyCarter theme.
(12:12):
Come get this so that you'll beready for Cowboy Carter.
If you're going to the show, youneed this.
Whatever the case may be, thisis your opportunity to market
whatever it is that you have.
So I want to encourage you.
Get that together.
And it should be a limitededition drop.
It should be something thatthey're going to get here.
(12:36):
You need some type of travel kiton the go.
People are traveling in.
So many people were coming to,you know, since Beyonce is in
Houston and she ain't in Dallasthis year.
Dallas had to come to Houston.
She's not in New Orleans thisyear.
So New Orleans had to come toHouston.
(12:57):
And other people from Louisianahad to come to Houston.
So travel kits for those peoplethat are traveling in.
There were people that weresaying they were coming from New
York and D.C.
and all these places, which iscrazy because there was a New
York show.
But then people have differentreasons why they travel and do
(13:19):
these things.
But I'm here to tell you thatyou really need to consider what
it is that you're going to offerfor these activations.
So I would say...
That, um, this is the perfecttime for your merch.
(13:39):
Beyonce has her merch drop, butI'm gonna tell you some of their
merch is very expensive.
So why would you think of likesome other t-shirt?
Of course you can't usecardboard Carter cause there's
trademarks, but maybe you coulduse something else that is
catchy.
That would get people'sattention.
Um, For a cowgirl or a cowboy, those are generic words and
(14:02):
terms that you could use.
And you could put on a cutet-shirt and sell those for a
little bit cheaper.
And you probably would get somepeople who don't want to spend
$50,$60 on merch or$100 onmerch.
Some people do.
They don't care.
But some people just needsomething.
Like me, when I saw the prices,I thought I was going to get me
(14:25):
a$25 t-shirt.
And when I saw them merchprices, I was like, oh, no.
I was looking.
I was at Walmart looking for mejust a Houston T-shirt.
You need to find a way howwhatever it is you're selling,
you can connect with somebodyand partner with them so that
(14:50):
you guys can work together tomarket those products to get it
out.
influencers, differentinfluencers.
You need to create some type ofphoto op.
I don't know.
For those of you who don't know, there's a new mural of Beyonce
here in the city and it's atthis club and this club has this
(15:12):
great happy hour on Fridaynights.
Well, they created a photo opfor Beyonce.
the beehive to come over there.
And do you know, it created anopportunity for those people
after they took their photos, they could go right into their
club if they wanted to getdrinks and or food or just hang
(15:34):
out or whatever the case may beat that event.
That's what I'm talking about.
And they had a mechanical bulloutside of there.
All of those photo opopportunities so that people can
create Instagram Instagrammablemoments and also photo reels for
(15:54):
their social media.
These are opportunities guysthat you don't want to miss.
And when Beyonce comes to yourcity this is your chance.
This is your opportunity tocreate opportunities some type
(16:14):
of product just for this group.
This is your, your target marketis the beehive.
All you gotta do is study thebeehive and you gonna know what
it is that they're interestedin.
Besides Beyonce, you can look atwhatever it is that they're
(16:36):
need.
That's how products are created.
You find a need in the market.
You feel it and then sell it tothe public.
So I'm here to let you guysknow, basically, let me see, if
(16:58):
you're not, if you are not Ifyou're an entrepreneur and
you're not looking for anopportunity where you can sell
to a specific group, and itcould be somebody else's group,
so you can make some money, thenI really don't know what to tell
(17:19):
you.
This is the perfect opportunity, and Cowboy Carter did not miss.
They did not miss.
The merch from the merch.
To Sacred.
To Sir Davis.
Which was all at her show.
And.
I forgot to tell you this.
(17:39):
At the.
Her cinematography.
In promoting her stuff.
I mean that's the whole thing.
She gives you this visual.
It's her visual storytelling.
That is phenomenal.
But all these commercials.
She never breaks.
But all these commercials.
with her product placement allthroughout her stuff.
(18:04):
She has these salon chairs thatare set up at the place.
And then she has this commercialfor Sir Davis.
It's just an opportunity thatis, it's an opportunity.
She saw her, the best marketingis at her shows.
(18:24):
So I say this to say, If youhost an event, event marketing
is my thing because that's how Igot started with my business.
I hosted an event years ago andI didn't capitalize on it the
way I should have.
If I did, I would have made surethat I had all my product
placement in just the rightplaces.
(18:45):
And then I would have told youand sold you on that all
throughout the event.
That's all I'm saying that youshould do.
If you have an event, you needt-shirts for your event.
You need some type of signage topromote there.
But then also it should be withlike some type of flyer.
(19:06):
Brochure should accompany itthat you could give it or some
type of bracelet that you couldgive people.
Anything that reminds them ofyour product.
Don't miss that opportunity.
Have a special drink at yourevent that is a theme based on,
(19:29):
I mean, that is a name that'sbased on the theme.
So, I mean, people could comeup, you know, people come up
with all kinds of things.
The Beyonce brunch, and then youhave a special cocktail at the
brunch or whatever the case maybe.
I'm just making up stuff now.
You sell candles.
You need to have a specialBeyonce candle.
(19:50):
Give those people their specialcandles that they'll have and
they'll remember forever.
And it's a limited editioncandle.
If...
What else?
Makeup.
If you sell makeup, I mean, ifyou do makeup, you need to have
some specials going and runningjust for Cowboy Carter.
(20:11):
These are things that you justneed to have.
And you need to have, if yousell products, there should be a
special product drop.
And you got to promote it thewhole week so that people don't
forget.
They have to be talking aboutyour product and then trying to
get to you and your product.
And then make sure you rememberto tell those people to tag you
(20:34):
while they're trying your stuff.
So I just want you to knowwhether you sell skincare,
candles, lashes, or lip gloss,it doesn't matter.
This is your moment to sell withpurpose and intentionality.
Beyonce brought the energy.
You got to bring the brand.
That's your job.
So don't watch from thesidelines.
(20:56):
I mean, this Cowboy Carter erais here to stay.
It's not going anywhere.
Your inner mogul needs to comeout and come to the stage.
It needs to be front and center.
So that's all I got for youtoday.
And I hope that this helps.
And I hope that you will takeadvantage.
(21:17):
And this is your chance and yourtime to shine.
Remember all the tips that Itold you and use them to your
advantage.
I just don't understand howanybody can miss this
opportunity to promote underthese circumstances.
So I hope I've helped you.
(21:39):
And if you like this episode, please like and share, follow,
subscribe.
And if I missed anything in thecomments, please add any
information that you would like.
to add to this that would help.
And just give me some feedbackalso.
(22:01):
I have a text link where youcould text and send your
comments.
But I hope I've helped.
And I would just ask for you tostay tuned for more.
Coming soon.
Bye.
