People are going to have opinions about us.
About who we are.
About what we're doing.
About what they think and feel about that.
And in our career or business, this can become a distraction.
Certainly we need to present ourselves to our stakeholders and communities in a way that isn't off-putting or offensive. In a way that is sensitive to others.
But if we're not careful, we can become too fixated on what other people think about us.
And when we do that, it holds us back.
It keeps us from putting ourselves out there.
It keep us from speaking up in the meeting.
It keep us from saying what we really think or from doing what we really want to do.
And here's the real truth of it.
When we modify our behavior to try to influence how or what people think of us, it never works.
People are going to have their opinions no matter what.
So my advice is to shift your focus from other people's opinions to yourself.
On what you think.
On what you want to do.
And go do that.
Let other people think what they will.
Let them be wrong (or right) about you.
And let it not matter which way it goes.
That's what we're talking on the podcast.
