Welcome back to the podcast.
If you are new here, I'm Rae.
I'm a somatic coach andbreathwork facilitator, and if
you aren't new here, welcomeback.
I'm so glad that you're hereand that you're tuning in for
today's episode and that we getto spend some time together.

(01:06):
Some things behind the scenesthat I've just been up to in
life.
I'm currently reading Worthy byJamie Kern Lima, and it's all
about feeling enough, and shealso shares her story throughout
the book, which is really cool.
So she has this example of whenshe was younger.

(01:27):
She grew up watching Oprah andthen, throughout her adult life,
she ends up selling hercosmetic company, it Cosmetics,
to L'Oreal and it's like thebiggest acquisition and she is
also the first female ceo thatthey acquire acquired a company

(01:47):
from.
So it's really interesting andshe ends up, obviously.
She ends up being verysuccessful and she ends up
running in in the same circle asoprah and she realizes in her
adult life that she doesn't feelworthy of being Oprah's friend
and she creates this.

(02:08):
She goes on this journey overthe over four years and she
creates this book, kind of in areflection of her life and how,
throughout her whole life, therewere these moments where she
was seeking worthiness andenoughness outside of herself
instead of inside, and I justthink it's really great.
So I'm about halfway throughand I'm really enjoying it.

(02:31):
So I figured I'd share it withyou if you want to check it out.
I've also been watching Suits onNetflix, so I'm on season eight
.
I can't believe that I'malready on season eight.
That's like a lot of catchingup on Netflix.
So me and my husband have beenenjoying that and we're curious
to see how it ends.
And if you've watched it.
It's so good.

(02:51):
And then another thing thatI've just been excited about is
I am planning to create a littleporch garden, so a little
container garden on my porchthis year, and I'm going to make
some tomatoes and cucumbers andjust have fun with it.
I've never created a gardenmyself, and so I'm excited to

(03:13):
just, yeah, create an amazingthing.
It's going to be awesome.
So today I thought it would benice to chat with you about
debunking some myths that comeup in the somatic world,
breathwork world, coachingspaces, and some of these I
believe to be true at one pointtoo, and over time I learned

(03:35):
that they were simply not true.
So the first myth that we haveis in the breathwork space, and
it's that the harder or deeperyou breathe when you're doing
breathwork, the greater thetransformation.
And this is not true.
This is not true.
So I use a trauma-informedapproach when I'm teaching

(03:58):
facilitating breathwork, andwhat that means is really
working at the pace of your body, so finding that rhythm that
feels good for you, that depththat feels good for you, and
manipulating your breath in away that feels supportive for
your body.
So there's, of course, timeswhere you're going to want to

(04:20):
push through some discomfort,but it should never be like
painful or anything like that Ican share.
One time I went to a breathworkclass where the instructor had

(04:45):
like so much fire, energy andwas just like really pushing us
to breathe like really deep andreally hard and I actually
pulled a muscle in my chest.
So I was so like mad at myselfbecause I'm a facilitator.
I was like how could I let thishappen?
I need to listen to my body.

(05:06):
It was just, oh, it was sofunny.
So what you can do is breatheat your pace, listen to your
body, and what not to do isbreathe so deep and so hard that
you pull a muscle in your chest.
You don't want to do that.
And our second myth is more inthe coaching space and it's if

(05:28):
you experience anxiety, thenthere's something wrong, you're
broken and you need to be fixed.
So this could not be furtherfrom the truth.
I used to believe this one formyself.
Actually, from the truth.
I used to believe this one formyself.
Actually, I had this beliefthat if I was experiencing
anxiety, that I was just ananxious person and that I

(05:50):
wouldn't be able to changesomething like that and what I
learned over time through doingbreathwork and through doing
somatic healing, is that thereis absolutely nothing wrong with
me experiencing anxiety.
It was simply an emotion that Iwas feeling and a sensation
that I was feeling in my bodythat I actually had no

(06:11):
connection to.
So we spend so much time in ourminds, especially with anxiety,
that we can feel disconnectedfrom our bodies, and so there's
nothing wrong if you'reexperiencing an uncomfortable
emotion like anxiety, grief,dread, sadness, jealousy they
are all part of the humanexperience, and what breathwork

(06:35):
and somatic healing helps you dois metabolize those emotions.
So breathwork can help youshift your state.
It can support you in holdingspace for yourself, so like
being in your own energy, and itcan also help you with
releasing any stored trauma thatmight be in the body.
And then, with the somatics, itcan help you to understand an

(06:56):
emotion from an entirelydifferent perspective than our
minds.
So we can try and outthinkourselves out of a feeling like
oh, maybe I'm anxious because ofthis or maybe I'm sad because
of this, or whatever the casemight be.
And what somatics does is thatit helps you bring the voice of

(07:18):
the body and like how thoseemotions might be being felt in
the body into the conversationand there's so much wisdom to be
discovered in when you bring inthat new perspective and then
from there you can move forward.
And our third myth that I'd loveto share with you is that being
grounded and at ease is theonly way to be regulated, or

(07:44):
that's the ultimate goal ofnervous system regulation, and
this is false.
This is false, my friends.
So sometimes you need to moveoutside of your window of
tolerance, and that means beingin a dysregulated state, and
sometimes you need to do that tostay safe, to set a boundary,

(08:06):
to practice your no or just tohave a normal response to
something that's happening inyour environment.
So I know for myself when I,when I started doing breath work
, I was really anxious and ittotally changed the landscape of
my nervous system because myanxiety started to disappear and

(08:30):
what my baseline was of wheremy nervous system normally laid
like when I woke up in themorning, was different, and I
was.
It wasn't that it wasnecessarily better or more right
or wrong or anything like that,it was just different.
It was like I had done enoughbreathwork that my nervous

(08:50):
system was staying at a like,its baseline was at a different
place, and so it's notnecessarily that you always want
to be grounded or you alwayswant to be at ease, because it's
just unrealistic, right?
We're humans.
We're always going to be, youknow, bumping up against

(09:11):
different things in our livesand it's normal to have
different responses to thingsthat are happening.
So you do not need to be in agrounded state to be regulated.
You'll want to find whatregulation feels like to you in
your nervous system and in yourbody.
So a good example of this that Ican share is that when I have
caffeine, sometimes I'll be likeoh yeah, I'm going to have like

(09:32):
a tea with caffeine or like youknow, iced coffee or something,
and I don't have like a coughcaffeine or like a coffee every
morning or anything like that,or that's just not something
that I've done, but sometimesI'll have some caffeine.
And so I went to a little teashop with my mom for brunch I
think it was like two weeks agoand they, they have all.

(09:56):
It's a super cute placeactually.
They have like all like littletea sandwiches and, um, what are
those things?
Scones.
Oh my god.
The scones were literallyamazing.
And so I decided oh yeah, I'mgonna have, uh, like a black tea
or it's like a chai tea orsomething, and it was so good
and we shared like a whole pottogether and instead of just
having one cup, I had like fourcups of this caffeinated tea,

(10:21):
and I don't usually do that.
So I went from being in a superlike grounded place to just
being really dysregulated.
And that was just from caffeine, so it doesn't always need to
be you know, this like a bigthing or like something doesn't
always need to like happen.
Sometimes it's just like ourbody gets in a dysregulated
place because of you know,something we ingested.

(10:43):
So just a fun way to bring itback together that you don't
always have to be grounded or atease to be considered in like a
regulated state, and that's notalways the goal.
And then our fourth myth is thatsomatic healing and breathwork
is only for someone who hasexperienced a significant trauma

(11:04):
, and that is false.
So somatic healing, breathwork,that's for anyone that is
looking for a greater sense ofself-awareness, maybe to shift
your energy or release somestress.
If you're looking for moreemotional resilience, or really

(11:24):
just anyone that's looking forpersonal growth, then breathwork
and somatic healing could be agood fit for you and for me
personally.
I always incorporate like atrauma-informed approach.
So we're so used to being inour heads right, like we are
always thinking.
We're always with our minds,and in our mind is where all of

(11:47):
our fears live, all of ourdoubts, and then when we start
to step into somatic healing orbreathwork and we start bringing
that voice of the body online,it can be, like you know, pretty
alarming and strange to be like, oh, I actually feel connected
to my heart, or oh, I feelconnected to my root chakra, or

(12:08):
just simply like being in ourown energy, like really pausing
and being in our own space andactually being within emotion.
Like for myself, I always useanxiety as the example, but
something like even grief orsadness, like being with that
feeling, can be pretty alarmingand strange.

(12:29):
So I know for myself, I alwayswork with someone that has a
trauma-informed background and Imyself am trained in
trauma-informed practices andthat's because you'll be moving
through these new experiencesand sometimes things can come up
that maybe you know previouslyyou didn't have awareness around

(12:53):
, and that's okay.
I also make sure that I don'tever want to put someone that
I'm working with on a pedestaland that includes myself as well
.
Like any practitioner, anyhealer, any therapist, any coach
, all of us.
We are not perfect, and that'sbeautiful, right, like you're
with this person, whomever youchoose to work with, because of

(13:14):
the energy that they bring,because of the space holding
they provide and they're notalways going to get it right,
and nine times out of 10, theymay have also been through
something similar to you, and sothey're going to be able to
share from a perspective ofsomeone that may have already
forged like, walked on that path, and I don't think it's always

(13:34):
necessary to have that in common.
I think there are so manyhealers out there and therapists
and coaches that can helppeople in spaces that they
haven't been in.
I think that that's absolutelypossible.
When it comes to the coachingspace, it is very common for
people to kind of have theirniche, so to speak, be in a
place where they've specialized,because it's something that

(13:58):
they have lived themselves.
So, just to wrap that one up,somatic healing and breathwork
is not only for someone who hasexperienced significant trauma.
So, just to wrap that one up,somatic healing and breathwork
is not only for someone who hasexperienced significant trauma.
It could be for anybody that islooking for personal growth and
healing.
And then we have number five.
So somatic healing only focuseson the body.
This is false.

(14:21):
So somatic healing includes thebody in the conversation.
So somatic healing includes thebody in the conversation and
this can lead to understandingwhy you move into thought
spirals, so having a strongerconnection between your body and
your minds.
It can lead to feeling moregrounded, feeling more regulated

(14:42):
in our a way that feels goodfor you.
It can lead to having a greatersense of the present moment, so
being able to stay present withwhat's happening in the moment,
being able to pause beforemoving into a thought spiral.
It can help with yourrelationships, because you

(15:02):
become more present and maybe amore attentive partner, rather
thanfixating on the past orhyperfixating on the future.
It can also help you toidentify what your needs are and
how you communicate those needs, because with somatic healing,
you're getting a new perspectiveand you're getting to know
yourself in such a different anddeeper way.

(15:24):
Those needs and how tocommunicate them become easier
to do and you get to know thembetter, and it can also help you
to build a more compassionaterelationship with yourself.
So this happens when you startdoing parts work, you start
understanding having a lovinginner parent, a loving inner

(15:46):
father, a loving inner mother,and how to work with your inner
children.
So really being able to meetall parts of yourself with
compassion and love and how thattranslates into other areas of
your life is incredible.
And that was all five myths fortoday.
So the first myth was theharder or deeper you breathe

(16:08):
when you're doing breathwork,the greater the transformation.
The second was that if youexperience anxiety, then there's
something that needs to befixed.
The third was being groundedand at ease is the only way to
be regulated.
The fourth was that somatichealing and breathwork is
something that's only forsomeone that has experienced

(16:29):
significant trauma.
And then the fifth was thatsomatic healing only focuses on
the body.
So I thought that this was afun way to you know, share more
about what breathwork is, whatsomatic healing is,
trauma-informed approach moreand a little bit more about what
I do, and I hope that youenjoyed it.
