(02:13):
I've linked it in the show notesfor you, and I can't wait to
meet you inside the group, myfriend.
All right, mama.
Let's take a couple moments tobe honest here.
Self care and positive selftalk, they are not always going
to be the confidence boosterthat sticks with us, especially
when life gets hard, right?
(02:35):
When life throws lemons, theself care routine, the positive
self talk, those are usually theones that gets knocked out first
beacause doesn't stay in ourmind.
I used to wonder why I feltgreat when things were going
good and I was saying all ofthese positive affirmations.
But when I came acrosschallenges, my confidence was
(02:55):
nowhere to be found.
So as I was saying, I amcapable, I am worthy, I am
happy.
All of those things that I wassaying, didn't stick because in
that situation when I didn'tfeel capable, when I didn't feel
worthy or happy, all of thatwent out the door.
I'm saying all of this to saythat no matter how much of a
(03:16):
wonderful self care routine Ihad or how many positive
affirmations I read andrepeated.
It never really filled me withthe peace that I was desperately
searching for.
I know it probably comes as ashock for those of you who know
me in real life and grew up withme, especially since you know
that I've competed in pageantsand I created a following on
(03:37):
social media where I sharedbeauty content because I was in
front of the camera and evenbefore all of that, I was more
outgoing than I was in thisparticular season of my life.
So the question is whathappened?
Well not to sound cliche or toblame anyone or anything but I
(03:57):
became a mom and then I gotsick.
stuck.
I didn't know what to do anymorebecause my life was changing
faster than I was ready for itto happen.
And you can say that self doubttook over and I had realized
that my confidence was shakenand there was the pressure of
trying not to let it show, right?
It was living in the mentalityof fake it till you make it.
(04:18):
And it seemed that no matterwhat I did, at the end of the
day, I kept circling back tothis question.
How much longer do I keep doingthis until the confidence I want
sticks with me?
It can be hard to navigate thisseason, especially as you become
more serious about growing yourfaith and relationship with God.
So this episode is definitelygoing to be your faith building
(04:42):
episode because we are going toturn our attention to Jesus.
Before I dive into today's Bibleverse, though, I want to briefly
talk about why the commonconfidence boosters don't stick.
Now, I talked about how I had aself care routine and I
practiced positive self talk orreally positive affirmations,
(05:02):
but I circled back to how longdo I do this until it sticks?
words simply felt empty and themore I thought about it, the
more I noticed that these thingsdidn't stick because they were
very self reliant.
And as a Christian who wants togrow stronger in your faith And
build a relationship with God,it didn't make sense anymore to
(05:23):
rely on self, which is wherepositive self talk stems from.
It is from the reliance of self, instead, the focus should be
learning to depend on God.
The self care routine was formomentary feel good feelings,
And it was for creating thisimage that I wanted to present
(05:43):
to the world.
Before we move on I want toclarify that there is nothing
wrong with having a self careroutine because hygiene is so
important, but it should not bewhere you draw your confidence
from.
so now we talked about some ofthe reasons why confidence
boosters don't last long Let'stake a look at what to do
(06:03):
instead.
Jesus says in Matthew thatanyone who hears his words, by
the way, I'm reading fromMatthew chapter seven, verse 24
and 25, and I'm pretty muchsummarizing it, but you are more
than welcome to flip there ifyou want to and read along.
We are actually going to befocusing in Luke today, but this
(06:25):
right here kind of sets up whereI'm headed to.
So in Matthew, Jesus says thatanyone who hears his words will
be like the wise man who builthis house on the rock.
He then goes on to say that therain fell and the floods came
and the winds blew and beat onthat house, but it did not fall
because it had been founded onthe rock.
(06:46):
Again, that was Matthew chapter7, verse 24 to 25, but I want to
bring your attention to Lukebecause we're going to be
focusing the majority of today'sepisode in that passage.
I'm referring to Luke chapter 6verse 47 through 49 and I'm
reading from the EnglishStandard Version.
Jesus is still speaking here andit is from the same message.
(07:08):
So Jesus says, Everyone whocomes to me and hears my words
and does them, I will show youwhat he is like.
He is like a man building ahouse who dug deep and laid the
foundation on the rock.
And when a flood arose, thestream broke against that house
(07:28):
and it could not shake becauseit had been well built.
Now I'm going to pause here andshare that on this particular
verse, the footnote says somemanuscript says founded upon the
rock.
Verse 49 continues to read, Butthe one who hears and does not
(07:49):
do them is like a man who builta house on the ground without a
foundation.
When the stream broke againstit, immediately it fell, and the
ruin of that house was great.
I want you to take a moment tojournal out what your thoughts
were after you heard this or asyou were reading along.
(08:10):
What stuck out to you?
Write down the Bible verse ifyou want to don't be afraid to
ask questions.
Write down any questions thatyou might have because this is
going to be a great opportunityfor you to gather your thoughts.
It's also a great way for you tocome back and answer the
questions that you wrote down sothat you can begin to have more
clarity as you are reading theBible and building your
(08:33):
relationship with God.
As you're doing this, pause meif you have to.
Alright, so I hope that you wereable to spend some time to
journal out thoughts andanything that stuck out to you.
As we are reflecting on Luketoday, Jesus points out a couple
of things.
(08:53):
Well, he points out a lot ofthings, but for me, what stuck
out in this particular Bibleverse that I shared is The word
dig deep, and when you thinkabout digging deep, what comes
to your mind?
It probably sounds like it's alot of work, right?
Digging deep actually teachesyou a few things.
(09:14):
Physically, it shows you whereyour limits are.
And that's not always a badthing because as it brings to
your attention what your limitsare you have the choice to
decide if you're going to stopthere or if you're going to
continue to become stronger andgrow.
Emotionally, it's going to tellyou what your intentions are.
It's important to assess how youare approaching God.
(09:37):
Are you going to him only whenthings are hard but not inviting
him fully into your life?
And then spiritually, it teachesyou to set aside immediate
relief as you wait on the Lord.
I believe it is also why Jesustells us to dig deep because
he's already said in this world,we will have trouble to begin
building lasting confidence, youhave to let go of the quick
(09:59):
remedies that's going to giveyou that confidence boost that
you're searching for when lifegets hard or when you feel like
you're just not enough, if youdraw your confidence from these
things like self care andpositive self talk, what happens
when it gets taken away or whenyou go through hard times?
Your confidence will waver andthat's not the goal when you're
(10:21):
building lasting confidencethat's centered in God.
So think about what your go to'sare when you need a little boost
of confidence.
Is that a self care routine?
Is it positive affirmation?
Is it buying an outfit that'sgoing to make you feel good or
look good as you look atyourself in the mirror?
(10:42):
As You're thinking about whatyour go to's are when you need a
little confidence boost It isgoing to bring you awareness of
your actions Then think aboutwhy you're going towards the
thing that you want.
If it's for immediate relief, Iwould encourage you to replace
that with a prayer, a very shortprayer, asking God to intervene
(11:05):
in that moment or spend thattime with God instead of going
to do the thing that you wantfor that immediate confidence
boost and allow him to satisfyyou instead.
digging deep is you putting yourhope in Jesus.
In the passage of Luke that weread, Jesus also says, lay the
foundation, right?
(11:26):
Digging deep and laying thefoundation down.
Laying the foundation is whereyou set your boundaries.
We talked about that last week.
I'll link it in the show notesfor you if you missed it, but
the healthy boundaries are goingto Be what keeps you within the
parameters of getting lastingconfidence because we are
(11:46):
fighting against the flesh atthis point.
And in order for you to buildyour house, you need to place it
on the solid rock.
It is more than profound.
Fessing your faith.
At this point, when Jesus talksabout digging deep and laying a
foundation, he's implying thatthere is work that needs to be
done, and that work can only becompleted by you.
(12:09):
You cannot expect to havelasting confidence by simply
wishing for it, although a lotof us probably wish that we
could do that and it would be somuch easier, but if it was
simply that easy.
Everybody would be doing it.
So to grow your faith even more, you have to put in the work,
take the time to build arelationship with God, take the
(12:31):
time to read the Bible and getto know His good and awesome
words.
I know that it can be soincredibly hard and confusing
when you're reading the Bible, especially if you're new into
your faith journey or you justdon't fully understand what
you're reading But I wouldencourage you to not give up and
to continue to show up and read.
(12:53):
Pray before you read that theHoly Spirit would give you eyes
to see, ears to hear, and aheart to receive God's words.
personally, I like to look atStrong's Concordances.
It is a book and it isexpensive.
It might be out of your budgetright now, but if you don't have
that, don't let that discourageyou from wanting to understand
and really be engulfed in God'swords because there are other
(13:16):
resources that you can use.
Blueletterbible.
org is a really good one that Istill to this day use as well.
By the way, this is notsponsored or anything.
I'm just simply sharing with yousome of my favorite resources.
The last thing I want to pointout here is that Jesus says the
word immediately in the lastverse or the last two verses.
(13:38):
It implies that there is goingto be an instantaneous result.
It tells you that there is asense of urgency involved.
Because no matter what, you'regoing to be facing storms, and
when these storms come, it'sgoing to feel really heavy.
The word immediately also servesas a warning for you to urgently
(14:01):
build your house on the rock.
And I have to pause here andaddress all of my mamas with a
perfectionist mindset.
You do not have to come perfector come healed to build your
house on the rock.
As a matter of fact, I think themost growth that you get is when
you go to God broken.
You don't have to haveeverything that you think you
(14:23):
need because God is alreadyproviding for you everything
that you need.
So if you're living in theperfectionist mindset and you
think that you have to have allyour ducks in a row before you
can dig deep, lay at thefoundation and go to God, my
friend, I want you to pause, scratch that thought and just go
to Him as you are because youare going to be changed.
(14:46):
Yes, there is work that needs tobe done on your part, but allow
him to transform you and renewyour mind.
Jesus says at the end of verse49, when the stream broke
against it immediately it felland the ruin of that house was
great.
It's not just a tiny scratch inthe house, my friend, but a
(15:06):
great ruin.
I think about the time where Icontinue to let self doubt creep
into my mind and destroy everylittle bit of confidence that I
built.
But That was my fault too.
I have to admit because I wasrooting my confidence in the
things that made me feel good inthe moment.
Now I know that as you'renavigating, building God
(15:29):
centered confidence, that it canbe all so confusing because
you're fighting against yourflesh, but mama, don't get
caught up in the distraction.
Don't get caught up in theperfectionist mindset.
Don't keep running towards theshiny object that promises
things and it doesn't withstandthe storms that come your way.
(15:50):
Instead, keep your eyes on Godand continue to go to him, read
his word and renew your minddaily.
Allow that to transform yourwhole life, your mind, your
body, your soul.
It is so life changing.
Now, before I wrap up and signoff, I just want to take a quick
moment to recap because I knowwe talked about a lot.
(16:11):
If you're sick of confidenceboosters not working, it is time
for you to try something new.
New.
We were in Luke today to remindus and set us on the right path
of renewing our mind.
We talked about digging deep.
That is putting your hope inJesus and resisting the
temptation to go for animmediate relief when you're
wanting a boost of confidence.
(16:33):
Jesus tells us that in thisworld you're going to have
trouble, but put your hope inHim and not in the world.
Replace the temptation for aninstant boost of confidence with
prayer or a moment to truly bewith God and allow Him to
satisfy you instead.
We also talk about how Jesusinstructs us to lay the
foundation down.
This is where you setboundaries.
(16:55):
There is work to be done whendoing this.
Setting boundaries, laying downthe foundation, digging deep,
all of it requires work.
So build a relationship with Godand take time to read the Bible
and understand it.
It's going to make such adifference in your faith journey
and also in how you get Godcentered confidence.
(17:16):
And then the last thing wetalked about is that Jesus warns
us there's going to be animmediate fall.
It tells you that there's asense of urgency involved
because no matter what you aregoing to face storms.
You and I cannot predict when wewill face the storm.
It will be wise to continue todig deep and lay the foundation
down.
I know that it can be incrediblyhard, especially when the world
(17:39):
gives you so many solutions forall your doubtful thoughts.
But my friend, trust in God'swords and remember, you can do
hard things.
Thank you so much for hangingout with me today.
I had such a wonderful time.
