I am a young wife.
I am the host of the Ever Bepodcast, which is a faith and
lifestyle podcast.
I am a Catholic content creator.
(01:33):
On Instagram you can find me atat maricwagner Been doing that
for like the past six years.
What else?
I'm also the founder of thepopular Catholic lifestyle brand
West Coast Catholic Co-founder.
Actually, I started it with myhusband, trey, so shout out to
(01:54):
the hubs there Could not bedoing anything without him.
So I wear a lot of hats, butit's super fun and basically in
everything that I do, the wholereason why I do everything is to
help people liveChrist-centered lives.
That's it.
That's my mission in life.
(02:15):
That's my goal to help peoplelive Christ-centered lives.
And I do this because I grew upfeeling pretty alone in my
faith and, even though I grew upCatholic, I didn't really know
what it meant to live out yourCatholic faith or to really like
follow Jesus.
Besides going to mass onSundays, that's all I really
(02:37):
knew growing up.
And it wasn't really until I dida college summer internship,
actually with Focus back in 2018, where this all really changed
for me and I began to beintroduced to this like whole
new perspective of what it meantto follow Jesus, so much more
(02:58):
than just going to mass once aweek.
And that summer was completelytransformational for me because,
for the first time ever, I metother women my age and men of
course, there's both men andwomen that were on this
internship.
But I grew in friendship withother women my age who were
(03:18):
actively seeking Christ andactively trying to live a
Christ-centered life.
And, honestly, you guys, if I'mbeing completely honest, when I
started this summer out as anintern in this internship, I
remember like hearing you knowthese other like college
students talk about like howthey prayed every day or how
(03:40):
they lived virtue, or how theydidn't, you know, sleep with
their boyfriend or go get drunkon the weekend or whatever, like
all these things you commonlyfind on a college campus.
I remember them talking aboutlike just the ways they were
just trying to like activelypursue christ in their life.
Do you remember thinking like, yeah, they thought I'd like kind
of be like stretching this, like just to like get the
(04:01):
internship, like maybe they saidthis all in the interview
because they're trying to get ajob at the catholic organization
, but I'm gonna figure it out.
You know like, let's be realhere.
There's no way college studentsout here are like actually
practicing sobriety and chastityand excellence and prayer and
faith and like all thesedifferent things.
(04:22):
And I kind of remember likechatting with, uh, some of the
women interns at the beginningand just being like no,
seriously, you can tell me likeI'm not gonna tell anybody like
seriously, like is this actuallylike the way you live on a
day-to-day basis?
Like actually do you not dothese other things?
Like actually, are you, are youactually like making time to
(04:44):
pray every day?
And are you actually going todaily mass, you know, during the
week, and do you go toadoration and all these other
things?
Are you in a bible study?
And and the answer was yes.
Like these, these women, youknow, bless their hearts.
They were so patient with meand I was very fresh in my
reversion and they were just sogentle with me and they're like
(05:06):
yeah, mari, I'm actively tryingto live a Christ-centered life
as a young 20-something incollege and it's the best and
life has never been sofulfilling or whatever, so
joyful.
They didn't regret it, they hadno complaints about the way
(05:26):
they were living and reallyencountering these women was
what began to transform me fromthe inside out, and seeing their
courage and how they lived aChrist-centered life began to
give me the courage to change mylife as well, began to give me
the courage to change my life aswell.
And these women are so sweet, Ilove them dearly to this day
(05:49):
and they basically discipled meall summer.
They taught me how to pray, they encouraged me to live a
life of virtue.
They taught me just differenttruths about the Catholic faith
that I didn't know.
I mean, there's so muchrichness, so much beauty, so
much to learn in our Catholicfaith, and I just didn't know a
lot.
You guys.
Like I said, I grew up on theWest Coast in Washington.
(06:10):
It's not a very like religiousstate and so I felt lonely in my
faith a lot of the time, and sobeing in community with other
young Catholics was what Ineeded to kind of light a fire
within me and then give me thecourage to live it out.
(06:32):
And I think that's part of thereason why SEEK was one of those
super pivotal moments in mylife where I felt a deeper call
to follow Christ life, where Ifelt a deeper call to follow
Christ because so this wholereversion started happening my
sophomore year of college.
Summer after sophomore year waswhen I did this internship and
(06:52):
I met these you know thiscommunity of young Catholics
that were also interning with meat focus.
That completely like encouragedme to transform my life and
then went back to college, actually studied abroad the
semester after that internship, which was amazing, not because I
(07:13):
was in Europe, but becauseactually I think the Lord is so
intentional I went abroadwithout any of my friends I
didn't really have a lot of likepeople that I knew in my study
abroad program and it gave methe opportunity to kind of start
anew, to kind of just likestart this new life that I was
living over the summer of prayerand virtue and seeking the Lord
(07:38):
in a much more intentional wayin my life.
I think that I would have goneto college, like back onto
campus, right after that summer.
It might've been really hard todo so because I would have just
gone back to my normal ways andI think the Lord intentionally
gave me like four months rightafter this internship, away from
(08:00):
my normal day-to-day on campus,to just give me a whole new
fresh start and an opportunityto live into this, not even new
Mari, but this like more Mari, right, like more of myself, more
of the daughter God created meto be on this.
Yeah, this semester that I wasabroad because I didn't have
people around me that alreadyreally knew me and expected me
(08:23):
to be a certain way or to act acertain way it was just a whole
new, fresh start.
And then, after that semester, right, you've got Christmas
break and then it's January, which means it's Sikh season,
and this was my very first Sikhthat I went to.
So just, let me just take youback.
Okay, let me take you back tomy very first Sikh experience
(08:46):
back in 2019.
I was a junior in college at thetime and I was still very new
to this amazing Catholic worldlike I'm, you know, sharing and
I really had just started divinginto my faith as my own, really
began practicing all these youknow good habits as a Catholic
and putting Christ at the centerof my life and really just
(09:08):
learning what it meant to livefor Christ as an adult, what it
meant to be Catholic and to havemy life reflect that.
And so I was going into thisconference like pretty jazzed to
have another experience where Icould be encouraged in my faith
, kind of like that summerbefore.
But I also was kind of unsureof what to expect because I'd
(09:29):
never been to like a bigconference like this and I'll
never forget that first day, like walking into the convention
center seeing all the peopleand like checking just kind of
nervously like what is going on.
There's so many people, I don'tknow what to expect, and then
(09:52):
walking into the arena and justseeing like literally tens of
thousands of people mostly allcollege students like me at the
time, for the same reason.
They were all there for thesame reason to be set on fire
for their faith and to followChrist more closely.
It was amazing.
(10:14):
I mean it was truly one of themost pivotal moments in my life
and it gave me a renewed senseof courage to follow Christ in a
deeper way.
Because going to SEE seek mademe realize that I wasn't alone
in my walk of faith, specifically in the Catholic
faith too, because I had otherChristian friends, even though
(10:37):
they weren't super practicing, like I feel like it was more
normal to hear about, you know, people being non-denominational
in some way, but I didn't have alot of like boldly Catholic
people in my life and to knowthat Sikh was Catholic and that
there were tens of thousands ofpeople there who were there to
be set on fire, who were thereto be encouraged in a radical,
(11:01):
counter-cultural way of livingand to just like be with Jesus,
to worship Jesus, to followJesus, was amazing.
I mean, it was truly.
I look back on it and it wasone of the most inspiring times
of my life and I mean since thenI've been to seek every year.
(11:23):
Actually, I think there was oneyear I missed it, but I was in
the Holy Land, so it was apretty good excuse.
But other than that, I've beento Sikh every year.
I think I've been like five orsix times, but nothing compares
to that very first Sikh I meanevery Sikh, you guys, I kid you
not is so hype and I'm recordingthis right now, in November,
(11:46):
and I'm so giddy for Seek tocome around this January.
I think after you go your firstcouple times and you know what
to expect, it's just awesomebecause it's kind of like a
little reunion of heaven.
It's like you start to seepeople in the Catholic world
that you've known from differentgroups or maybe different
(12:07):
retreats or organizations orwhatever.
And it's just like this bigcommunion of heaven and even if
you don't know a lot of people,it kind of feels that way.
It kind of feels like you'rejust like stepping into heaven
and just like you're justsurrounded by the body of Christ
.
You're just surrounded bypeople trying to be saints.
Like what other environmentgives you that uh, like culture,
that feel?
(12:27):
You know?
Um, but nothing compares tothat verse, zeke Like you're
just like a sponge, just likesoaking it all up and so giddy.
And I mean I remember in everytalk I had my journal and pen
and I would furiously take notesat every single talk to try and
soak up all the goodness andhang on to every single word
(12:49):
that Father Mike Schmidt said, and all the other speakers, of
course, they were all amazingand I remember I felt like I
left that first seek feelinglike I wasn't following Jesus
alone and that was everything tome at the time, wasn't alone in
(13:11):
this fight, in this battle, inthis walk to give my life to
Christ was so encouraging andmaybe it felt like I was alone
sometimes, even after Sikh.
You know, maybe you encounterhardship or obstacles in the
journey, but I knew deep inside, like I now knew of this entire
(13:34):
generation of young Catholicsthat were also fighting to make
Jesus the center of their livesand fighting to live
counter-culturally and live outChristian values of sobriety,
chastity, excellence, you know, virtue, prayer, piety like.
Being Catholic is brave, youguys.
(13:56):
Living counter-culturally inthis way is brave.
In today's modern world, beingCatholic is brave.
It takes courage.
Like being boldly Catholic andoutwardly standing up for your
faith and actually living outJesus's teachings is brave,
(14:20):
which is why I freaking lovethat this year the patron saint
of Sikh is Saint Joan of Arc.
I couldn't think of a morefitting example of somebody who
courageously answered Christ'scall to follow him, regardless
of what came her way.
If you don't know a lot aboutthis incredible saint, I will
(14:44):
gladly fill you in, because it'spretty amazing what the Lord
did in her life and just herstory.
Honestly, just life, um, andjust her story, honestly, just,
yeah, just who she is.
So, basically, saint jenna bark, um.
At the age of 13, she beganexperiencing mystical visions
pretty crazy and hearing thevoices of none other than saint
(15:09):
michael the archangel, saintcatherine of alexandria and
saint margaret, catherine ofAlexandria and Saint Margaret
yeah, pretty casual.
They told her that God hadchosen her to save France.
So she's like this Frenchteenage girl and God's literally
like you're going to save yourcountry and basically like the
(15:32):
mission was to support CharlesVII as the rightful king during
that time period.
And I just like I mean I readher story and it literally
sounds fake to me.
I think that, like, I oftenthink of Saint Joan of Arc as
this, like amazing saint, but Idon't think of her being like a
real human being in the way thatI think of, like Saint Therese.
(15:54):
You know Saint Therese, knowSaint Therese, just like she's
so sweet, she talks about allher littleness and ways that she
needs Christ and everything, and I think both saints are
incredibly amazing examples forus in different ways.
But I hear of Saint Joan ofArc's story and I'm like for
reals, like was this girl realRight?
Like at the age of 17, saintJoan of Arc led her troops to
(16:20):
several victories for France andeventually led to the crowning
of this king, charles VII, whichfulfilled her divine-inspired
mission that God gave her, andit's just insane to think of a
teenage girl doing this Like at17,.
I was not doing stuff like this, okay, I bet you weren't either
(16:42):
.
In battle, actually, shecarried a banner that had the
names of Jesus and Mary on it.
Okay, I mean, homegirl was full, sending it with such faith
that it gave others courage todo the same thing and they
freaking won right.
(17:03):
They like won the victory.
And what is what's, you know, the most impactful part of her
story is not just that right.
Even though she got thevictories in war, sadly her
story didn't end in glory onEarth.
She was captured and put ontrial for heresy and then,
(17:23):
unfortunately, was burned at thestake.
So she was a martyr at just 19years old, which is a pretty
harsh yet holy end there.
But as she faced her death andwas burned at the stake, her
final request was to see a crossraised high.
(17:44):
So she literally wanted to seeJesus on the crucifix through
the flames while she was beingburned alive.
And her famous quote is raisehigh the cross so I may see it
through the flames.
Like, are you kidding me?
Raise high the cross so I maysee it through the flames.
Like I'm sorry, but like evenjesus right, uh, in the agony of
(18:08):
the garden was like god, whydid, why is this the plan?
Like, even on the cross, god,why has you forsake.
Why have you forsaken me?
And St June of Arc was giventhe grace and the courage to be
in her cross right and say letme see Jesus through the flames
(18:32):
so that I can die with courageand with faith.
St Joan of Arc's story isextraordinary.
It's extraordinary, but I justlove that.
Her courage can inspire us inbig ways.
But we can also take thiscourage to inspire us just in
our everyday lives.
I'm all about right.
Christ-centered living is allabout bringing the faith into
(18:54):
every part of our life, and justthese different things that we
can learn about the saints, these different ways that we can
model our lives after them, canbe implemented in small ways in
our everyday life, because thereality is most of us won't be
called to lead an army or die asmartyrs, but we will face
moments where we're called tostand up for our faith right.
(19:16):
We will face moments where Godis calling us to follow him more
deeply and maybe to stand outin front of you know the crowd.
So maybe it's speaking truth ina difficult conversation with
your friends.
Maybe it's choosing to livecounterculturally on your campus
.
Maybe it's simply sharing yourfaith with somebody who needs it
, who has never heard the gospelInviting someone to mass.
(19:38):
Maybe being brave and tellingyour friends where you're
actually going on a Tuesdaynight to Bible study.
Maybe it's choosing to stopgetting drunk or stop sleeping
with your boyfriend orgirlfriend.
Maybe standing up and beingpro-life is what the Lord's
calling you to do.
There are just so manyopportunities we have to
(19:58):
courageously live our faith intoday's world, because being
Catholic in today's world is notthe status quo.
But we can learn a lot fromSaint Joan of Arc.
She teaches us that courageisn't about being fearless,
right, because living this way, like living boldly Catholic in
(20:19):
today's world, especially on acollege campus or maybe in the
workplace, can be reallyintimidating, and so it's not
necessarily about like having nofear.
St Joan of Arc teaches us thatcourage is about trusting God
enough to follow him, even whenwe're afraid.
(20:39):
Right, trusting that, after all, we're not just following a
religion for the sake offollowing a religion.
We're following a person.
We are following Jesus Christand his.
In his wisdom, you guys, in hislike fatherhood and in just this
gift, right, in wanting to giftus with goodness, he gave us
(21:02):
the church to be able to do sowell, he gave us the church to
be able to follow him well, andwe are proud of that.
We are proud to be Catholic, weare proud of our religion and
that's why I feel like thisyear's theme of Seek, follow Me
(21:22):
resonates so deeply with St Joanof Arc's story, because she
said yes to God to follow him inwhatever he called her to do,
not knowing where it would lead,in whatever he called her to do
, not knowing where it wouldlead, but ultimately just
trusting that he had a plan, ultimately just trusting in who
he is and saying yes because heis God.
(21:44):
So just take that as yourencouragement to say yes to God
in whatever he's calling you toin your life right now.
Right, even if that starts witha little yes to follow Christ,
those little yeses add up andturn into big yeses, because the
more we give the Lord ourhearts, our lives, our choices,
(22:06):
our everything, the more he'sgoing to invite us to follow him
more deeply, which usuallymeans, like taking a little bit
of a bigger step next to it.
It'll require a little bit of abigger yes in some ways, but
it'll start small first, right?
Like don't be afraid to startsmall.
It doesn't have to be all ornothing, like God might just be
(22:27):
asking you to take, maybe, anext step in your faith life.
Maybe it's going to adorationlike for the first time, or
maybe it's like going toadoration once a month or once a
week, if you can.
Maybe it's committing to a fewminutes of daily prayer, to
spend time with him in prayerevery single day, maybe just
five or ten minutes a day first, and then you build up.
(22:48):
Or maybe it's inviting Jesusinto a part of your life that
you've kept closed off, thatyou've sort of just kept hidden
from him.
Maybe there's fear of what willhappen if you let him in.
Maybe it's going to confessionfor the first time in a while.
Whatever it is, you know whatit is that the Lord is putting
(23:11):
on your heart, like right now,in this moment.
If you were to think about it,is there anything that's like
slightly like burning on yourheart?
Maybe that's what God's callingyou to say yes to you right now
.
Or maybe that's what God'scalling you to let go of so that
you can say yes to more amazingthings that lead you to him.
(23:32):
Saint Joan of Arc reminds usthat saying yes to Jesus
transforms our lives.
It's no small things.
It's transformational, and itnot only transforms our lives,
but it also gives others thecourage to follow him as well
and to transform their lives.
It's a ripple effect.
(23:54):
You guys, it's a ripple effect.
You guys, it's a ripple effect.
I mean the fact that Catholicismstarted with Jesus and 12 guys
and we are here now.
I mean, like a bajillion peopleare Catholic.
Sorry, I don't know the realnumbers, but, like you know,
millions of people.
Okay, fine, I'll look it up onGoogle.
How many people are Catholic inthe world as of okay?
(24:20):
It says as of 2022, 1.3 billionbaptized Catholics in the world
.
That's a lot of freaking people.
And it started with Jesus and12 guys that followed him.
So that just shows us the powerof how our yeses can transform
(24:41):
our lives, set us aflame, andthat flame is contagious and
brings other people into thefold.
Like brings other people intothis, like amazing journey of
following Jesus and gives themthe courage to shed their old
life and accept Jesus as thecenter of their life as well.
(25:03):
And we want to reach the wholeworld.
There are so many of ourbrothers and sisters that don't
know Christ yet, or maybe thatare lost or distant from their
faith, and you don't know theimpact you could have in other
people's lives just by youchanging yours, just by you
(25:23):
making Jesus the center of yourlife.
And if you're listening to thisand you're like, yep, mari, I
am with you, I want to do thisLike I'm all in.
Maybe you've said that beforeand you just like continually
find yourself like not actuallygoing all in.
Maybe you've said that beforeand you just like continually
find yourself like not actuallygoing all in.
Let this be the time when yougo all in.
Okay, let this be the push thatyou need to go all in.
(25:48):
I'm all about new beginnings, you guys.
Okay, I'm a Monday girl.
I'm a start a new habit in anew month kind of girl.
You know what I mean.
And so something I love aboutZeke is that it's in January,
it's the start of a new year, and it feels like a fresh start,
like a new beginning, cleanslate.
So if you, for some reason, just like need an excuse to
(26:09):
start over, if you're like Ican't just start over on a
Wednesday, fine, although I'lltell you you can, okay, and I'm
talking to myself as well.
But if, for some reason, you'relike, no, I just, I just need a
fresh new start.
January seek 2025.
Let that be your new start.
As we approach the new year, prepare yourself Okay.
Start asking the Lord right nowhow do you want to change my
(26:33):
life in this coming year?
What do you want me to let goof?
How can I follow you moreclosely?
How can I make you the centerof my life?
Start praying about it now.
If you're not ready to do itnow, start praying about it now
so the Lord can speak into yourlife this next month and a half.
I'm recording this in, you know, end of mid to end of November,
so that, as we approach the newyear and as you get into seek,
you can kick off the yearfollowing Christ more fiercely.
(26:57):
Whether you're going to seek ornot, this message is for you
okay.
Even if you're not going toseek, let this be a time to
start a new chapter where Jesusis truly Lord of your life.
Like what does it mean forJesus to be Lord of your life?
It means that he comes firstover everything.
(27:17):
There is not a single thing inyour life that takes priority
over Christ and his teachings.
Let this be the time where youallow him to be Lord of your
life.
And just take a second to askyourself what is one way I can
say yes to Jesus right now.
Not in January right, but rightnow, today or this week.
Maybe it's spending more timein prayer.
(27:38):
Maybe it's finally joining thatCatholic Bible study or small
group.
Maybe it's stripping your lifeof a sin that just is keeping
you enslaved and away fromChrist.
Or maybe it's just being moreintentional about living out
your faith in small, everydayways or just noticing how God is
actively blessing you in yourday-to-day life and actually
(27:59):
acknowledging his presence inyour life more, wherever you are
in your journey.
I want to encourage youfollowing Jesus is the most
courageous, fulfilling andbeautiful decision you will ever
make, and that's just a fact.
And that's what I'veexperienced in my life.
That's what I experienced backwhen I did that internship and I
(28:22):
completely you know leaned intothis Catholic life that these
girls and these Catholic men andwomen that were interns with me
were showing me.
That's what I experienced whenI went to seek for the first
time in 2019.
That's what I experienced in2020, when I became a focused
missionary and began to dedicatemy life to leading others to
(28:44):
Christ.
And that's what I experiencedtoday, right In 2024, as someone
who, in every part of her life,is striving to bring people to
him and to root my own life inChrist and to live a
God-centered marriage.
Like I experience the mostcourageous, fulfilling,
beautiful, joyful and freeinglife that I could ever have, and
(29:08):
it's all thanks to Jesus, it'sall thanks to the grace he has
given me to follow him and thebold decision to put him first
in my life.
Friends, we could talk all day, because this is like my favorite

(30:31):
just as St Joan of Arc did.
May we be bold in our faith, unwavering in our trust and just
, relentless in our pursuit ofyou, and we pray that you give
us the grace to do so even inthe face of hardship, even in
the face of feeling like we arethe only one doing so, you know,
(30:53):
in loneliness, in our faith, even in the face of our society
and our culture that is sodifferent from the way that you
called us to live.
God, just give us courage tofollow you and to be brave like
St Jonah of Arctur.
Amen, in the name of the Father, son and Holy Spirit.
