Helen (00:00):
Welcome to the Social
Media Strategy. I thought it
would be appropriate to kick offthe episode wearing my dental
lab coat because of theunsponsored by products that I'm
going to share with you today. Ithink it's so funny. I have this
lava coat because when I work onprojects with doctors and
dentists and things like that, and I make the rough edits for
(00:22):
the clients to see the type ofcontent we're going to shoot, it
helps for me to look like thecharacter I'm portraying. So I
ordered this, I think, $10dental coat off Amazon to make
those videos, and that's why Ihave it.
I almost got rid of it, but thenI realized I've used it multiple
times, so it's going nowhere. It's a staple in my closet now.
I'm gonna take it off, but Iwanted to kick it off with that.
(00:44):
So the products I wanna talkabout today in my unsponsored by
series are two things that I useevery single day. That is a
theme, and I went deep intoteeth at this point.
I forgot to bring in my floss, but okay. Hold on. So the
products I wanna talk abouttoday, yes, they are teeth
(01:04):
related, and I'm gonna bringthem in now. Sensodyne. Now, if
you know, you know.
I work on Sensodyne, I work onthis brand. I'm not being paid
to talk about this on thepodcast. I am paid by them to do
shoots for their social mediaand their content. I don't I
don't put myself in the content. So this is I shoot their
content.
So I'm not getting paid to talkabout this now on the podcast.
(01:27):
But I will tell you, sinceworking on the Sensodyne
commercials, which has beensince 02/2008, I have realized,
because I talk to dentists allthe time and I hear the
interviews, I'm interviewingthem and asking them the
questions and everything, I havelearned so much about sensitive
teeth, what causes toothsensitivity, how you can prevent
(01:48):
it, what are the differentthings, the different triggers,
etcetera. And so through theyears, I've learned so much. But
when on my first shoot, I'llnever forget when I heard the
dentist talking about, you know, taking a sip of cold water or or
eating ice cream, and I waslike, that happens to me. Never
did I realize that toothsensitivity was something that
(02:08):
actually could be addressed witha toothpaste.
Like, I thought, I just havesensitive teeth. That's the way
I'm wired, and I'm just gonnahave to learn to live with it.
But lo and behold, I literallyafter the shoot went out, got
myself some Sensodyne, becausethey didn't even give us any
free at that point. Got myselfsome Sensodyne, and it has been
game changing to my life. I usedto go running, and if I'd
(02:29):
breathe in a cold air in thewinter, it would be pain.
Ice cream, pain. Popsicles, pain. Brushing my tooth with and
rinsing with cold water, neverhappening. I was always like the
room temperature water or giveme the hot water. I don't care.
It's not gonna or warm water, not gonna be hot or cold. So I
am now a proponent of thisbrand. I am behind this brand so
(02:52):
hardcore. That's why I thinkthat's probably why they've
stayed in my life all theseyears as a client because it's
not just a fly by night thing. For me, I'm committed to the the
brand.
And I am so excited to tell youthat for a while, when I was
doing the Pronamel commercials, which is also by the makers of
Sensodyne, so Sensodyne andPronamel. Sensodyne is for tooth
(03:12):
sensitivity. It's more more ittreats the sensitivity more
hardcore, whereas Pronamel isfor when you're enamel when you
have eroding enamel, and that iscaused by acidic foods, brushing
your teeth right after you eatacidic foods when the enamel is
soft, and then you're brushingthe enamel right off. This is
what I learned from the dentist. You need Pronamel re hardens the
(03:34):
enamel, so that way it puts ittakes it combines with the
saliva to re harden your enamel, and then you don't brush the
enamel off your teeth.
But because I my teeth are sosensitive, I would lean towards
the Sensodyne more than thePronamel as a rule. For a while
there, I would brush withSensodyne at night and Pronamel
in the morning and vice versajust to try and reharden my
(03:54):
enamel, but also address thesensitivity. Pronamel does
address sensitivity, but not ashardcore as Sensodyne. So that's
why I was leaning towards this. But anyway, recently, one of the
shoots was Sensodyne sensitivitygum and enamel.
So they finally combine theproducts in a sense. So this one
addresses the enamel loss aswell as the sensitivity. I sound
(04:15):
like an ad. This is crazy. Butthis is what I've learned from
being on these shoots.
I've spoken to dentists. I'velearned so much. I know exactly
what the foods are, how ithappens, and I even know how
this works. It goes deep insidethe tooth and it forms a barrier
because the nerve what'shappening is the cold water hits
the nerve deep inside the tubuleof the tooth, and this creates a
(04:38):
block from that tubule so thatwhen you drink the cold water,
it doesn't trigger the nerve.Listen, I know how it works.
I probably should be in thecommercials. Anyway, I just need
my dental license to to do that, and I have to go back to school.
But anyway, that's the story. And so if you don't know about
Sensodyne, you should. And ifyou have any type of tooth
(05:00):
sensitivity, there's so manyoptions.
You've got the the quick the onethat's rapid relief. There's so
many skews, but I lean towardsthe ones with the toward the
ones with sensitivity gum andenamel because occasionally,
I'll get my gums will getsensitive. Alright. So I'm gonna
stop talking about it. I'm alsogonna tell you I floss like a
religion, like it's a religion.
I floss every single night. Andmy teeth have my dental
(05:22):
appointments are amazing. Inever have to I very rarely have
to have a deep cleaning becauseI'm a flosser. I didn't bring my
floss here, but I like Glide.Flossing is where it's at.
So if you're not a flosser,you're gonna you're setting
yourself up for failure and fornot great gum health. So even
with all of those things, Istill add on to the party with
my Sensodyne toothpaste. Andthat's what I have to say about
(05:45):
that. But my next item goes handin hand, and it's completely
different, sort of, not really,my toothbrushes. I'm sharing,
and I'm pulling them up here.
I'm adding it to the partybecause if you are using a hard
bristled toothbrush, you'rebrushing the enamel right off
your teeth. And I've never felta toothbrush quite so much like
(06:08):
this. It's like butter on thegums is what it's called. Guru
Nanda. I happened upon thisbrand when I when I got into
trying oil pulling for a shorttime where oil pulling was a
thing on TikTok, and I'm like,I'll try that.
And these toothbrushes came withit. Actually, the ones that came
with it I've already used, so Ihad to order another pack of
them. I love these. Soft, notanything like any soft
(06:30):
toothbrushes that I've bought ina drugstore. I am a huge fan of
this.
The brush of choice by the oilpulling people is the brush
brush of choice by themothership. So if you don't want
to do oil pulling, skip it. Getthe toothbrushes though. You
won't be sorry. There's one forevery color in in the family,
and they are so soft.
They are literally like what itsays, butter on the gums. It's
(06:52):
so gentle, and so this way, you're not brushing the enamel
off your damn teeth. Okay? Okay.Enough about teeth.
Let's get to the topic at hand. Can you tell I'm well versed in
in, everything related to to,dental health, oral care? I've
I'm so well versed in it. Ithink I should be grandfather
(07:13):
claused into dentistry. So whatare we gonna do when social
media is making you spiral?
And you might think, oh, Helen, you never spiral. You're always
creating. You're always upbeat. You're always ready to go.
You're always camera ready, dada da da.
And you might be kind of rightabout that because I am pretty
much always camera ready. Ialways, like, always like to
(07:35):
think, even when I look crappy,I'm like, if I have to film
myself now, it wouldn't beterrible. So I think that I
started living my life that waywhen I became a content creator.
I'm trying to think if I waslike that before. And if I'm
really being honest with myself, probably not.
I didn't dress for the camera. We're gonna talk about that next
episode. I wasn't ever thinkingabout, like, the colors I was
(07:56):
wearing or how I presented oncamera ever. It would be like if
I was going side or in public, maybe I'd make sure I looked
good, I guess. I don't know.
But now, I'm always pretty muchprepared that if I have to pick
up a camera and recordsomething, I'm good to go. But
that doesn't always mean I'm ina really good mood to record
content. It's a very differentthing. And I also have times
(08:17):
where I'm like, ugh, I'm noteven in the mood. I can't think
of any ideas.
I don't even know what to make avideo about, and I'm looking at
what tutorials next. And I willtell you, there's strategies
that you need to use to resetyour energy when that happens.
And I find myself using thestrategies when I was reading
them. I didn't even realize it.These are Julie wrote this
(08:38):
newsletter, and she comes upwith the strategies all the time
because she is the queen oflogistics and strategy.
And when she shared the ideaswith me, was like, oh my god,
yes. These are the things that Ido all the time. So let's take
it from the top, shall we?First, take a break. Take a
break.
No one's gonna miss you for aday or two. You know what I
(09:00):
mean? You could take a break fora month. I mean, depending on
your following and how much yourviewers are watching you every
day and looking forward to theritual of you posting every day,
which happened to me. I wasposting every day, posting every
day, and then, oh gosh, June2022, I went blind and I
couldn't post.
There were were people saying, you okay? Is everything okay? So
(09:21):
there will be that if you havean audience that is waiting for
you and looks to you every day.But if not, you can take a whole
month off. No one's gonna it'snot gonna tank your account.
It's not gonna wreck your thing. You have to start over.
Whatever. It's not gonna dothat. People can sing you
whatever song and dance.
When I take even the littlestbreak because I'm busy with the
(09:42):
shoot and I don't have time topost as often, as soon as I get
back, it's like things lightright back up. So if you're
doing it constantly, of course, you're showing the algorithm
inconsistently. I'm talkingabout you post, post, post
consistently, and all of asudden after a few months,
you're really just fried out andyou need a break. You just take
a month off. You know?
(10:02):
You don't have to feel bad aboutit. It can be a lot. It's just a
lot. So feel free to do it. It'sjust that the issue we have when
we're a small business or weknow being consistent is
important for our personalbrand, for if we have been
monetizing from it, you have toyou have to keep going.
So there's a difference betweendoing it for fun and then just
(10:23):
like, I'm off the trail for alittle bit, and building a brand
because you wanna be takenseriously. And so because you
have to find that balance, I'mnot taking a month off. Even if
I'm in the crappiest damn mood,I'm not taking a month off. I'm
just gonna think of somethingdifferent to do. I'm gonna
change it up for a minute ortwo.
I'm gonna say, okay. I'm gonnachange my content. I'm gonna
(10:45):
hello. I'm gonna read out of ajournal one day. I just did
that.
I just read a journal entry, andit was, like, seven minutes
long, and people watched itbecause it was something
different. So I'm gonna that's abig one for me that I'm starting
with before I even take youthrough the newsletter points is
sometimes the reset can happenfrom going completely off the
(11:06):
rails onto something differentand making yourself feel like,
this is new because new thingstend to excite us more. When
we're in a routine, a lot oftimes you don't get excited.
Maybe go to a new exerciseclass, you have a new book
you're reading, and you getexcited about something new. So
the newness can help you jumpstart.
(11:28):
Alright. Now let's get to thepoints in the newsletter that we
covered. The first one is tofocus on your content. Like,
take a step back, look at yourvideos, and assess them a little
bit. Just look at which ones didwell.
Why did that do well? Did itstart off a certain way? Did you
look a certain way? Did you havea vibe that you were portray you
were your aura was a certainway? What really made that fun?
(11:53):
What made it engaging thatpeople stuck with it? And and
then also be critical. Whatcould be better? How could I
like, take notes. Audit yourselfand take notes.
Because this way, if you'regonna take get new renewed and
refreshed, you kind of come intoit with, alright. I'm gonna fix
that. I'm not gonna pause solong before I start talking. Oh,
I noticed on all my videos, Ialways, I do a lot of this. I
(12:17):
don't know why.
So now when I focus on myvideos, I'm trying hard to lose
the jersey that I do. So that'ssomething that gives me
something else to focus on. Nowyou're going to hear it. I
should probably have not calledit out, but here we are and we
are all friends here. But I do.
I don't know what it is, if it'sa jersey thing or what, I have
the little in between. I got toclean it up. I cleaned up my
(12:42):
ums. I tried to clean up mylikes, but those are harder. The
next thing is to focus onaccounts that you love.
So when you are starting tospiral and you're getting like,
oh, I can't even be on socialmedia anymore and I don't even
feel like looking at it. If youget to that point, that's when
you wanna go, wait. Let mereally pay attention to and
curate my feed better. And soplease have some discipline. If
(13:06):
you see something and you go, Idon't wanna see more of this,
scroll quickly.
Quickly, quickly. Don't sit onit even for two seconds. I get
in it sometimes with an airportdrama, and I'm like, why am I
watching this? And of course,I'm gonna get five more airport
dramas. I don't wanna watchairport dramas.
But sometimes it sucks me in andI'm like, what is this lady
doing? I haven't I've have Iever seen her at the airport?
(13:28):
Because I travel a lot. So I getin it. But the thing is you have
to you have to just like engagein some discipline.
What I tend to do when thathappens is I'll go to a
creator's page. I'll go even toJulie's page and I'll start
watching a bunch of her videosand say, oh, maybe I'll get
comedy or something. I try hardto curate it back to where it
should be, where it's more fun.But on TikTok, you can just go
(13:50):
to your friends following feedand follow the and watch the
people that you know you wannasee, and that helps keep things
in the right place. And thenmake sure you skip the ones if
those people are doing somethingout of the norm or they're not
it's not the energy you wannafeel.
Scroll past it. On Instagram, you're gonna stick to the same
thing. Do the following or theclose friends. Follow accounts
and pay attention to accountsthat aren't draining you of your
(14:13):
energy even more. It's so tough.
It's just tough. I every timesomething happens in the news,
we're in it. And we're in it,and it's like, my god. Our our
social media's wrecked again.Yet again, we're in a horrible
downward spiral of currentevents.
(14:33):
And it's so hard. I I'm sittinghere telling you that, you know,
when those things happen, Iactually have to take a break
because I'm like, just I can'teven I feel thankful that I can
focus on other things. And I'mlike, you know what? Today, I'm
not even gonna post anything.I'm gonna go for a run instead.
Today, I'm gonna go see if I canvisit the baby and get some some
(14:57):
cuddles in. We all need mentalhealth check ins for ourselves.
And so I know this is going alittle bit down that place, but
you gotta take a break. Andsometimes you gotta unfollow
people that make you feel bad.If you feel bad unfollowing on
Instagram, use the mute button.
It's a little easier on TikTokto ignore people, just pass
(15:20):
their videos so that you don'tget more of them. But on
Instagram, you can use the mutefeature. They don't even know
that you're muting them if youdon't wanna hurt their feelings
or whatever. It is so importantso important to rise up when
things are going down, you know?I don't know.
(15:40):
This is when I so this issimilar to what I just said
about like taking a break or gofor a run or whatever. Try a
habit swap. So if you thinkyou're reaching for your phone
and you're gonna startscrolling, go, you know what?
This time, I'm gonna go to mybook app or I'm gonna do a
puzzle game. I'm gonna scroll onsomething else on my I'm gonna
find something else that's moreinteresting.
(16:01):
And whatever that might be foryou, I mean, to me, it might be
even something as funny as goingback to Snapchat, which where I
use just for my family. So thatis very much more personal. So I
can just share Snapchats todayto make myself feel better
because it's just more familycontent. And you can do you can
really break the cycle byreplacing that habit with
(16:22):
something else for real. It'sjust worth it.
Now if we wanna stay in thesocial media zone, and you don't
wanna go like, oh, I don't wantmy engagement to go down, and
it's too important to me. I havea business to run. I need to
keep sales going, etcetera, etcetera, Then maybe consider
going live instead of scrollingand instead of creating. Go
live. Spend more time goinglive.
(16:42):
By the way, I went live a coupleof times in a row last week
because I was practicing, things. I wanted to learn things
about live to talk about in thestudio, and I was digging a
little deeper in the lives. Myvideos got a lot more engagement
in general that week when I wentlive a lot. So I do think
there's something to be saidthat going live does help your
(17:05):
gives you a boost in thealgorithm, I think, because it
happened to me. I even said toJulie, I think my account's lit
up really well, and I it mightbe because I went live, like,
three days in a row.
So try going live. Try that andsee if that helps you. And then
the, the other thing oh my gosh.I won't say the last thing, but
I'll say one more thing is thatyou can set the time limit on
(17:27):
your phone so that you're notspending too much time in those
in those apps. And do I do it?
Absolutely not. I don't. But Ialso can be very disciplined at
times, and I can say, alright, when the I set a timer on my
phone, just like when the timergoes, I wanna be on to my next
task, something like that. I'mtrying to do that more in my
work day, so I so I set times upwhere I know, okay, that's gonna
(17:51):
be my social media time, andother than that, I'm not picking
up I'm not going to those appson my phone. I really try and do
it.
It's obviously a little harderwhen so much of my business
involves social media, so it'snot gonna be me putting my phone
away for a week and not going onthe apps. It's not gonna happen.
I'm just telling you right now,it's not gonna happen. I also
don't find that they drain me asmuch. I very I am controlled
(18:14):
about what I watch, so itdoesn't take me down.
But if I have moments where I'mjust in a lull, I don't feel
like it today, then sometimesI'll scroll and I'll look for a
fun trend to make myself smile,do something silly, do a funny
effect, do one of those cap cuttemplates where you get taken
away by aliens. By the way, wanna do that one so bad, but
it's saying my cap cut has to beupdated. And when I go to
(18:36):
update, it's telling me that theapp was purchased with a
different Apple ID, and I can'tget the damn app to update,
which makes no sense, but that'smy technical problem to solve.
Anyway, I can't do the alienstaking taking me away one
because it's mostly animals, aliens taking the animals away.
I wanted the aliens to take themothership, you know?
Thought that would be cool. Sothat would be a fun one. But
(18:58):
that's what I tend to do is Itend to look for something fun
and silly, like melting. Thatwas a funny one. And I did the
audio from the Wicked Witch ofthe West, like, I'm melting.
So I thought that was funny. ButI get my kicks out of taking
myself out of what I have to do,the chores or the tutorials or
(19:20):
the constant information that Ihave to put out there, and I go,
I'm gonna do something so silly,and I don't care. And that's
then I usually get people thatgo, this is what I love about
your page. It's always soquirky, and you never know what
you're gonna do next. And I'mlike, you're welcome because I
can't I don't even know what I'mgonna do next.
I just try to have fun. That'sit. I even say that at work.
(19:42):
People are like, oh, the shoot'sgonna be so stressful. I said,
we're gonna have fun.
Don't you worry. Oh, I did thething. Did you hear it? We're
gonna have fun. I'm gonna callout all my quirks now.
Anyway, final thoughts. If youwant to channel that energy into
something positive, if you wantto feel better about making
content, and you wanna come tothe studio and come to a
(20:03):
meeting, you will always leavethe meetings feeling good. I
promise you that. And I leavethe meetings feeling good every
time because I get energizedfrom the studio members, and you
will get energized from eachother and from me being happy
because I love to be there, andI like to share and help and all
the things. Okay.
(20:25):
That's it for today. That is awrap. I have a big shoot coming
up this week, so here we go, bythe way. It's a new product
coming from Sensodyne. Not thisone, but a new one.
And I will be filming, so youwill probably not even I don't
know when I'm gonna get to golive or whatever, but I wanna be
able to go live and do some getsome do some more of that
(20:46):
because I think that really doeshelp, and I wanna keep my
account lit up. So that's mygoal. Join me on the ride, come
to the studio, and hang out. Wehave our first Saturday meeting
because I had to move the Fridaymeeting to Saturday. So if
you've been hesitant becauseyou're like, oh, the meetings
are during the week.
I can't ever make it. Try it outthis week, and you could see us
(21:06):
on a Saturday, and it's 11AMeastern time. We'll be hanging
out on a Saturday to just kindof get together and talk about
community building, moreengagement. We're gonna review
Instagram live because I justposted that lesson in the
studio. They I did post lessonsfor TikTok Live and Instagram
Live, a behind the scenes lookat what it looks like to be live
(21:28):
from the creator's perspective.
These are not tutorials that Ihave shared on my page. These
are tutorials that are onlyavailable in the studio. Okay.
That's it. That's a wrap.
Have a wonderful week have awonderful weekend because it's
Friday by the time you listen tothis, and I'll see you next
week. Or else maybe I'll see youtomorrow at the meeting.
