Today is our weekly trends and content ideas episode.

Before diving into trends, a few thoughts and observations from the past week.

Topic 1: Algorithm Mistakes

Misleading Advice on Following Niche Accounts

  • Many people advise following accounts in your niche to grow your audience.
  • This advice can be misleading and counterproductive.
  • Following similar creators may lead to constant comparison, stifling creativity.
  • Risk of unintentionally copying content instead of developing original ideas.
  • Instead, follow accounts that inspire you in different ways.

Why This Matters

  • Watching varied content fuels unique perspectives and creativity.
  • Helps prevent unintentional mimicry and allows creators to carve their own space.
  • Followers should be people who need your content, not just fellow creators.
  • Engage with a wider audience to grow authentically.

Helen (00:00):
Welcome to the socialized forecast. It is Tuesday,
February 25 and I'd like tostart off before I get into the
weekly trends as we know that'swhat Tuesdays are for, trends
and content ideas. But before Iget started, I wanna silence my
phone and also talk about a fewother things that have come to
mind. Things that I usuallynotice sometimes on the weekend

(00:20):
and then I'm like, I just make amental note and think that's
what I'm gonna kick off thepodcast with next time. So I
have a couple of topics, buckleup and let's go.
The first one is algorithmmistakes. And this might sound
like I know everything, the insand outs of the algorithm, but
nobody really knows that. Butwhat I have understood about the
algorithm, I have learnedthrough trial and error on my

(00:43):
own content, watching otherpeople, how they've succeeded or
not on their content. And so alot of this just I have a
natural ability to assess. I'm atroubleshooter by nature.
I like to figure out, okay, check that off. We tried that.
Check that off. We tried that. And that's how I operate.
So when I see things and peopleadvising on certain things, it

(01:04):
gets me I don't know. It gets mea little upset because a lot of
innocent scrollers coming alongand learning on social media and
then they hear someone and thenthey take that advice as gospel.
And then that might not be goodadvice. So I wanna talk about
this one thing that I hear a lotof people say, and that is you
should follow the accounts thatare in your niche if you want to

(01:25):
grow your niche, if you wannagrow your account. And I cannot
I can't really even say how muchI disagree with this.
I don't wanna sound like, anopposer to the idea because if
you are, for example, a foodcreator and you love your foodie
and you love to watch foodvideos, of course, you should
follow the accounts that youenjoy consuming, that you enjoy

(01:48):
watching. That is an importantpart of your viewer experience.
That really in my mind doesn'tdirectly correlate to the
viewers you are going to thefollowers you are going to get
on your account. Hear me out onthis because I just think it's
so frustrating when I hear thistype of advice and I'm like,
these people now think they'vegot to follow, you know, like a

(02:10):
tutorial person now thinks that, you know, if they're gonna teach
how to do something in a certainarena, they gotta follow every
other person that's doing thesame thing. And I would say to
you that that's probably theopposite of what you should be
doing for a couple of reasons.
And now let me see. Not in anyparticular order. I'm gonna
share what those reasons are. One, just because this is top of

(02:31):
mind. If you are following thetype of content that you are
also creating, you will haveless Number one, you're gonna
have, I don't know, copy notcopycat syndrome, but you're
gonna wanna you're gonna alwaysbe thinking, oh, that video was
so much better than mine oryou're gonna be in constant
comparison.
That's the word I'm looking for.Constantly comparing yourself to

(02:51):
all these other creators you'rewatching and how can I do it
like them and how can I be likethem? And it's like, you don't
wanna be like them. The wholepoint of you being on social
media is to find your people, tobe like you, to be authentically
yourself, not to copy what thatperson is doing. So, okay.
So that's number one. And numbertwo is inevitably, if you are

(03:13):
following someone and you areconstantly looking at their
content, you are going to end upcopying them and maybe not even
on purpose, but something aboutwatching that over and over will
start will have you believingthat it was your original idea.
And then you're gonna be doingexactly what you're gonna hate
when someone does it to you. SoI'm gonna try and say this in
the nicest way because it'shappened. I see people doing it

(03:37):
with my content and it's like, what?
You're obviously watching, liking, commenting, and then
you're remaking the same contentthat I make. And it's like
you're never there's a couple ofthings about that. Number one,
you're never gonna really curateyour own vibe because you're
gonna be so busy watching what'sin front of you and constantly
playing catch up that you won'tever ever find your real space

(03:59):
for yourself. Alright? That'sone way to say it.
The other thing is I mean, forthe person who like the
opposite, like I'm not watchingother people that are teaching
things. As a matter of fact, sometimes I think I probably
should watch a couple, but Idon't like to see what other
people are doing in my space. Ilike to put the blinders on and
not get sidetracked by orinfluenced by, oh, that person

(04:23):
taught that lesson. I should dothat too. Or, oh, that person
showed that feature.
I should show that too. I don'tthink that is a productive way
to operate, at least not if youwanna be original. It's gonna
put you in a place that you'realways behind and copying versus
leading. So I want you to justpercolate that for a minute

(04:45):
because I do think a lot ofpeople are thinking I have to
follow the same accounts. Andthen I'm gonna take it now a
step further because we didn'tthere's more to this.
That that was just like partone. I wanna get to part two
now. Part two is that if you'reonly watching that type of
content and then you mightenjoy, let's say, like myself. I
love to watch dog videossometimes. I just think dogs can
be funny and so that entertainsme.

(05:07):
I'm always sending Julie dogvideos. Lately, I'm getting a
lot of baby content becausemaybe because I'm watching them
now that I have a cominggrandkid on the way,
granddaughter on the way.Whatever it is. Those things
interest me. They have nothingto do with me teaching
tutorials.
They are not going to, help meto teach okay. Wait. How am I
saying this? Not that they'renot gonna help me. They're gonna
help me enjoy my experience onsocial media, but they're not

(05:31):
going to, necessarily elicit,followers.
And the next part of this isthat if you are only following
accounts that are similar toyourself, you're not gonna find
people who need what you'reoffering because probably those
people are already creating thetype of content that you're
trying to create. The people inthat person's comment section

(05:53):
are interested in that creator. So they're not necessarily
looking to find other foodcreators to watch. You're
almost, like, in someone else'sclassroom and then trying to be
the teacher in a weird way.Maybe that's a way to I'm trying
to relate it to something inreal life.
Just think about it. If you'reat someone's party, that person,

(06:15):
those are all their friends. Youdon't come into their party and
then try and pull people andhave them come over to your
house. Not you know what I mean?I like to say like think of it
as real life and I'm sorry thatI'm rambling today.
But this has just beendisturbing me because the more I
see people telling people to dothis, the more frustrating it
gets for me to watch because Iknow this is like This is the

(06:37):
opposite of what you wanna do.You wanna find people who need
you for your unique thing. Notthey need you because you're
another one of like somebodythat they're already following.
Oh my goodness. Did I say itokay?
So that's number one for today.I want you to think about it. I
want you to think about who youfollow. Follow for the joy that
you get from the content thatyou watch. And also, you would

(06:59):
be inspired potentially.
For my situation, if I wasfollowing other tutorial people
and that's all I was watching, Iwould not know the things that I
wanna teach because I'd onlyknow, oh, that person taught
that lesson. I better teach thatlesson. I don't even look at it.
No. I watch content I like.
I love alpha transitions. Iwatch them and I'm like, that I
can teach. I don't even know ifsomeone else is teaching that

(07:20):
lesson. I don't care if anyoneelse is teaching that lesson.
You get it?
I just I wanna teach the thingthat I enjoy. So when I'm for
example, recently, I just did aa video where I showed how to
use voice effects because I wasworking on a project for work
where I was giving thesecharacters voices and I thought,
oh, this would be a fun lesson.I didn't teach that lesson
because I saw someone elseteaching that lesson. You get

(07:42):
it? I taught that lesson becauseI was working on a project.
I was inspired by watching othercontent where animals and things
had voices. And I was like, oh,I should make a voice on this
animal. And then I'm like, oh, Ishould teach that lesson. Okay?
So it's a different way ofgetting creative.
It's being inspired by thingsyou watch because you enjoy

(08:02):
watching them, not becauseyou're watching that person
that's doing that thing and nowyou're gonna do that same recipe
because that person did thatrecipe. No. How about you're
watching restaurant, videos oryou're watching somebody who's
doing like a house, a housething and you see something in
their video and you're like, oh,I should teach how to do that.
Or maybe you're at an event andyou enjoyed some particular

(08:23):
food. Oh, maybe I'll make avideo about that.
You don't have to make a videoabout something that someone
else in your niche just made avideo about. Oh my god. I think
I've made my point and now I'mmoving to the next topic. Are
you ready? The next thing is, onFriday, my dear friend Grace
McCarrick who is a contentcreator in the culture CEO

(08:44):
space, she does a lot ofadvising on companies about
company culture and how tomotivate people.
And she's just amazing. Justamazing. But what she has done
for me personally aside from ourwork relationship, she has
helped me deal with something insocial media that is not my
specialty which is dealing withnegativity. I don't do it well.

(09:05):
I don't like it.
I I rather just like put my headin the sand, ignore it. Or when
I get negative comments, a lotof times I just I just let them
sit there. I ignore them.Whatever. I also don't go back
at people with negative commentsbecause I think that's giving
them attention.
So there's a lot of differentthings, but she has helped me
get in my head space correctlyabout the negativity. And she

(09:26):
had so many pearls of wisdomsfor me through the course of my
content creation journey. Andshe just posted something on
LinkedIn today and I was like, what? That is brilliant. Five
years of content creating andthat had never come into my
mind.
So I'd asked her if she wouldcome on the podcast on Friday.
So we are going to record itlive on Thursday and it's in the
newsletter and I'll put the linkin the show notes. If you wanna

(09:48):
attend live, you can putquestions into the chat. We're
gonna do it like webinar styleand we're gonna record the
podcast like that. And I have somany great topics that we're
gonna talk about with as whichare related to it.
So one of the things she hadtalked about on her LinkedIn
post was how people can comeinto your comments section and
they're they're almost likebanking on your audience to get

(10:08):
attention on their thoughtsbecause they don't have their
own page or community that theypost on. It was just such a wake
up call for me. And so I'm like, wait, Grace. We have to talk
about all these things. So Iinvited her and she said, yes,
and we're doing it.
We're doing it this Friday. Socome on Thursday at 11:30 was
when we're gonna record it,11:30 Eastern. Sign up. It's
free. You can come and listenin.

(10:30):
Very excited. And the thirdthing before I I move on to
topics of trends, well, I'malmost getting there, is that
I'm going to host a New YorkCity meetup where I'm gonna do a
social media workshop in NewYork City. And I'd love to know
if you are in the area, wouldyou be interested in something
like this? I need to get a vagueidea of not even a head count.
So this is not a commitment.

(10:51):
Just an idea of who might beinterested so that I can decide
what size venue I need to getbecause there's a few different
studios I'm looking at. And I'mlike, I don't know how big of a
space I need or how small of aspace I need until I gauge the
interest. And I'm just into itbecause this lunch and I did
last week in Connecticut was soamazing. I met the most
inspiring women. It was sofulfilling for me to be there to

(11:12):
teach and I really want to do itto do one for myself where it's
like my event that I'm hosting.
So me and lovely Benita, KosbosMarket is her handle. That's
with a k, Kosbos Market. We areputting together an event in New
York City and she's a foodperson. She does Lebanese
cheese, Mediterranean cheese. That's her expertise and she is

(11:33):
a, aside from that, she's awonderful person.
We get along really, really welland we decided we're so
complimentary in our skill set. We're gonna put an event
together. So hooray to that andI'd love to know. Just no
commitment. Just click on the onthe little link and say, yes,
I'm in New York City area.
Yes, I'm interested. And we'dlove to know just get a sense of
it. And we will be either Ilikely will be doing that at

(11:56):
April. So stay tuned for that.Alright.
This week in the studio, we aredoing a content review. I'm
pretty pumped because todaythat's where we're meeting
today. We always meet once aweek on Zoom. And today, what
I'm doing is reviewing those whoare going to be in attendance.
I'm gonna look at their accountsbefore the meeting and then I'm
gonna come with, like, here'sone thing you're doing great.

(12:16):
Here's one thing you canimprove. Very basic because I've
got, like, a bunch of peopleattending. I wanna make sure I
get to everyone. So it's gonnabe, like, looked at your
content, here's your thing, andhere's your thing. And that's
what I'm gonna do today in thestudio, plus we're gonna have
our usual q and a.
And we every week do haveprivate Zoom meetings where I do
something different every week. The next one, I think we're
gonna cover editing tips.Although, if this content review

(12:39):
thing goes well, I may follow-upwith another one of those soon
because I think when people thataren't can't make it today are
realizing that they missed outon that, they're probably gonna
want that. So I may I may foldthat into more often in the
studio. So if you're interestedin that, come and join.
Okay. My goodness. We're halfwaythrough and I haven't even
gotten to the trends yet. So I'mgonna keep it short on the
trends. But I wanna just, saywhen it comes to the trends,

(13:03):
when you're looking at a trend, think about the trend and how
you're going to make it betterfor yourself.
So it's gonna be relevant toyour style of content or your
niche or whatever. I'm gonnagive you an example. So for the
first one, it's tomorrow I willbe an expert. And this is for
someone who loves to pick up ahobby and then they think they

(13:24):
wanna go from zero to doing itreally well in the first day.
That's me.
I am that person guilty ascharged. I I think I talked
about it. There's a woman, thethe the content we shared here
is a woman with a sewing machineand she wants to become an
expert in the day. The joke isas a child, my mother gave me a
sewing lesson and I wanted tomake a full dress in the first
day. And she was like, you needto learn how to hem first and I

(13:45):
was not happy with that.
But I am that person. I wanna gofrom zero to I'm an expert. So
this would be a great one, butit's also a great one for
someone who doesn't dotransitions well. So I could use
that to tell somebody, like, tomorrow you'll be an expert and
you will be an expert because Iyou you're in my good hands and
I'm gonna teach you how to be anexpert. So I could spin it in

(14:05):
that direction if I wanted to.
That's why I'm saying you whenyou look at these trends, you
can take them so literally oryou can completely turn them
upside down and make them howyou wanna make it. And maybe
that becomes like another spinoff of the trend. Alright. The
other one for TikTok is this endand this is showing what would
save you if you were in asituation and you weren't really

(14:27):
happy at the moment. What wouldactually make you feel happy?
Like thinking about that. Andthis was a creator showing off
how being on vacation andgetting with all getting ready
with friends for dinner in oneroom, Looking at the beach could
save her. So she had a view ofthe beach even though it was
like probably chaos in the room.Alright. This Instagram one is
very funny because it's, oh, apiece of candy.
So you could be following atrail of something to, like,

(14:49):
what would how would somebody beable to kidnap you? And it's
like, what would what trailwould you follow and allow
yourself to be kidnapped? And inthis case, it was a creator who
loved beauty products. So, ofcourse, she'd following she's
like, would be easily kidnappedby following a trail of her
favorite beauty products. So youcan you can use that for
anything.
And, honestly, you don't evenhave to make it about being
kidnapped. You could just belike things I love. Oh, this.

(15:10):
Oh, that. I mean, you don'treally have to follow.
I always say trends are greatbecause they're trending, but
you don't have to do it justlike the same way. You could hop
on that because the audio istrending and do something
completely off the cuff. I mean, there's no, there's no, you
know, you can't really peoplesay, I did the trend wrong.
Whatever. There's no doinganything wrong on social media.
You could do whatever you wantas long as you're not hurting

(15:31):
anyone. That's what I think.Just try and have some fun and
enjoy it. And that's that's thethe whole thing in a nutshell.
Alright.
Let's get on to the next one, which is show me your camera
roll. This is such an old trendfrom way back. But for some
reason, it's trending again onreels. And it's like, give me, a
hacker saying give me 5,000 orI'm gonna leak your camera roll,
and then your camera roll isfull of pictures of your animal,

(15:54):
pictures of your get readyroutine, pictures of your
favorite, content tools, whatever, but tripods, pictures
of your favorite water bottlesif you're a collector or you're
or you like to collect littleturtle ceramic turtles, whatever
it is. So that's a really funone and it's so easy to do.
You can do it you can do it witha pet because most people with
pets have tons and tons ofpictures of their pets. You

(16:15):
could do it with your baby andthat's a fun one. Nice and easy.
Alrighty. Next up, let's talkoriginal content ideas.
And I just think we we try andgive you these because a lot of
people think trends are the onlyway to go. And I would say I
don't even do that many trendsmyself. I pick, like, one or two
a week, and the rest of mycontent is usually original

(16:37):
content. And it's eithersomething I'm doing in my life,
something I'm teaching in thestudio, something I've, you
know, just think about on socialmedia and I wanna share. So you
don't have to think so hard ontrends and that's why we give
you the original content ideas.
Like think of somethingdifferent like today, walk and
talk. So we talked about holdingup your camera and keeping it
eye level. And so practice that.Do a walk and talk video and see

(16:58):
if you can keep your camera at agood space at a good height And
try it. Whatever.
And sometimes when you'rewalking and talking, the,
interesting things come intomind. You feel more relaxed and
sometimes you have really goodcontent when you're doing that.
I find that when I'm walking inthe city, I I I think of things
and I'm like, this is so good.I'm gonna do it right now and I
pick up the phone and I recordit. So just take advantage of

(17:19):
the moment you're feeling it andrecord.
Alright. Now let's the next oneis to remind people of other
ways to find you. I'm so bad atthis. I really gotta take a page
out of my own advice book here. But since we don't know about
the future of TikTok, whateverwhat always happens to people is
we're always running that racethe last couple of weeks when

(17:41):
all of a sudden it's looming.
And, oh my god, why didn't Ispend some time getting people
to one of my other platforms? And, you know, then you're
scrambling and then everybody onthe Internet on this whatever
the app is is trying to tellpeople to follow them somewhere
else. You know? And though thatdoes get a little annoying where
everybody's trying to push yousomewhere else. So do it while
no one else is doing it.
You know? Think of a way to getsomeone over there when no one

(18:02):
else is doing it. I recentlydid, a video where I only posted
it on YouTube. And I said, oh,if you wanna watch that video,
you can watch it on my YouTubechannel. Okay?
The other thing, if you're game, you could set up a separate
email address and tell peopleyou can, email me and I'll send
you the link to a thing. Youknow what I mean? If you wanna

(18:23):
go that far where you'remanaging emails. I know a lot of
people don't wanna deal withthat, but I don't mind. I I
really don't mind that.
I feel like then I find my coreinterested people that those are
the ones that will take the timeto send me an email. So I like
it personally. So if you wannaemail me, go right ahead. You
can reply to the newsletter oryou can email me
hello@mothership.com. Mothershipwith a u.
Love to hear from everybody. Ialways, reply to my emails and I

(18:46):
try hard to keep up andsometimes they go to spam. So So
if you don't get a reply, it'susually because then I have to
dig through my spam at somepoint. Okay. The last idea for
today is the the green flagthing.
So maybe how everybody was like, this is a red flag or I always I
one time did one about my sonwhen he was at his bachelor
bachelor party, and they wereplaying music at piano and

(19:06):
guitar. And I'm like, this ishis bachelor party? Like, this
is hilarious. And I wrote, like, green flag, my son's bachelor
party, and they're all singing.I don't know.
I thought it was funny. Anyway,so if you have something in your
life, your business, or whateverthat causes you to think, oh,
this is a green flag. This is,like, a really positive thing
about something. Maybe make avideo about it and share your

(19:27):
green flag for your industry, for your hobby, or for your
niche, for your life, orwhatever. And so as Julie would
say, our green flag for socialmedia, for socialize, is when
users nail their transitions.
Yay. Because you know nothingmakes me happier than when I
teach a lesson and someone nailsit. So excited. Hopefully, by

(19:50):
the next newsletter, I will havein my next montage because we
did a really nice lesson ofclothing flying on and
everyone's doing their videosnow. And so I'm going to be
sharing them in a nice montage.
So I'm very pumped. Alright. Thetutorial for today is how to add
a voice effect which I mentionedearlier. And that is if you
wanna give your pet a voice, give an animate object a voice.

(20:10):
You can give anything a voice.
You can put like the eye effecton here and give this a voice.
So much fun. You can do theeyes, lips, and have yourself
talking as like the eyes andlips on this thing and then give
it a voice effect. Super fun. What's funny about doing a voice
effect, and I just did it on avideo, is I had the the my
animal, my pet, my stuffedanimal thing talking about me.

(20:31):
Like, I wasn't there. So it wasvery easy. I could have my
stuffed animal say, you shouldfollow her and you should go to
her website. She's really good, which sounds absurd coming from
me. But it was funny coming fromthe voice of my pet.
You can use it to sellsomething. I mean, that's a
great idea because it's a lot ofa soft it's a much softer sell.
Next is just a reminder that Iam going to be in Montego Bay,

(20:53):
Jamaica doing a women'sconference. I'm excited about it
because it's entrepreneurial. And when I go to these
entrepreneurial things, that'swhen I meet the most interesting
women doing cool businesses.
I kinda love it. So I can't waitto find out who I'm gonna meet
there. Not only gonna am I gonnameet them, I'm gonna be hanging
with them for the weekend. That's gonna be fun. From the
first to the fourth, there willbe networking.
There will be dancing. Therewill be business tips and

(21:16):
coaching. There's gonna be a lotof fun things in Jamaica. So if
you're interested, hop on theJamaica thing. It's the
LinkedIn.
It's linked in the show noteshere. It's linked in the
newsletter. Yippee. Yippee yay.It is gonna be fun.
Alright. Last thing before Ileave you is a reminder to sign
up for the live broadcast of theFriday podcast. So you can sign
up for that linked here in theshow notes, linked in the

(21:37):
newsletter where I'm going tohave a nice conversation with
Grace McCarrick about haters, negativity on the Internet, and
how she deals with, in general, the culture of social media
because that is really where herexpertise lies. And when I have
things that come into play in mymind, I often call I immediately

(21:58):
think of her and I'm like,Grace, do you have a minute for
this one? Because I just have totell you.
And she's really, reallyhelpful. She has such cool

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
