Today, we’re talking about the downside of going viral – a topic not often discussed. While going viral brings excitement, it can come with unexpected challenges.

  • The rush of virality: Watching views and comments flood in is exciting, and it feels like a dopamine rush. But the flood of activity also has negative consequences.
  • Clogged comment feeds: With viral videos, it becomes impossible to keep up with comments. The feed becomes flooded, and the sheer volume makes it difficult to stay connected to older posts or important messages. Business owners might miss comments related to their actual product or services because the viral video steals all the attention.
  • The impact on communication: It’s frustrating when you can’t see or respond to comments on older videos. The viral video often clogs everything up.
  • A case example (Nicola @made.with.mud on TikTok): A viral video might not always benefit your business. For example, a clothing line video went viral for a potter, overshadowing her pottery-focused posts.
  • Follower numbers and video content value: Stats show that a viral video with less value (e.g., quick tips) generates fewer committed followers compared to videos with more valuable content, even if the views are lower.
    • Example: A 700,000-view tutorial gained 11,000 followers. A 5-million-view video only gained 9,000 followers.
    • People tend to follow when they see long term value and get invested in your content.
  • Engagement insights: It’s not just about views. Forwarding and favoriting a video hold more weight than likes or comments for algorithm engagement.
  • The importance of content value over views: The key takeaway is that the quality of engagement matters more than the quantity of views. Followers are less important than getting your content in front of the right people.
  • Closing thoughts: Going viral can be a double-edged sword. It’s crucial to focus on creating valuable content that keeps your audience invested in you.

Helen (00:00):
Welcome to the socialized forecast, Tuesday, March 11.
We're gonna start off with atopic that I have to say is
probably not a common topic. Idon't hear about it a lot, but
I'm going to dive in because I'mgonna tell you firsthand that
I'm somewhat suffering from itand I just want to shed some
light on it. And that is thedownside of going viral. Not a

(00:23):
lot of people talking aboutthat.
Everybody wants to go viral.Everybody wants to have the
videos with all the views. And Ifeel that it's my duty and my
place right now to tell you whatthe bad side of that is. And I
think it's important. I think weall need to know because one day
you're gonna go viral and you'regonna say, oh my god.
She did mention that. And I wantyou to be prepared for it

(00:45):
because even though there is arush and an excitement and like,
oh my god. And you're watchingthe numbers and it's like
watching a a slot machine likego up and up and up and it feels
so exciting. So that is the goodpart and that is the fun part.
And you get lots of peoplecoming in and in my case, they
were like, thank you.
Thank you. This is the mostamazing video and oh my god. I

(01:06):
needed this. And so you get somuch dopamine from the love. But
no one really talks about theother part of it which is I'm
about to I'm about to break itdown.
Alright? So this is this is whattoday is. I don't even know if
I'm gonna get to the trends. You're gonna have to go to the
newsletter for the trendsbecause this is gonna this is
gonna take me some time toexplain and I feel it's
important. The first thing thatis a bummer about going viral is

(01:30):
that you suddenly lose track andyou are not able to keep up with
comments.
Now, mind you, I still am notable to keep up with comments on
a normal day because I have alot of videos moving with a lot
of content. I have a lot offollowers. So I already am a
little inundated with commentsand I do my best at night. I sit
for like an hour and I powerthrough. I usually do it where I

(01:53):
look at the activity feed and Ican see what people are
commenting on.
So sometimes it's much oldervideos where I'm getting
comments. And sometimes thosecomments are really
enlightening. They're alsofunny. And they're also
indicative of somebody who mightneed more help and might be
interested in my services. So Iwanna make sure that I can
respond to the comments evenwhen they are on older videos.

(02:13):
A lot of times mine are on anolder tutorial where I'm
teaching something basic or Iget somebody to comment
something like, oh, I wish youcould I wish I could hire you to
help me. And I have to be ableto respond to that and say,
actually, you can hire me tohelp you. So I don't like to
miss those messages. I don'tlike to miss those comments. So
I use click on the activity andthat's how I look at my comments
first.

(02:34):
And then when I feel that I'mtoo buried in that, I will go to
my most recent videos and then Iwill go through the comments on
the most recent videos so that Ican keep up with at least be
able to respond to a bunch ofthem, like some of them, read
them, enjoy them. All the thingsthat are great about having a
having any viral video or anyviews whatsoever is being able
to enjoy your comments. So whathappens when you go viral is the

(02:58):
feed gets incredibly clogged. Sowhen you're in that section
where you tap activity and thenyou are scrolling to see
comments, it is in it's endless. And it's endless comments, but
you are not able to get throughthem all because they're coming
in so fast.
Like, I get through the 10 andthen there's, like, 20 more.

(03:19):
It's just that's how crazy thisvirality was. Like, to have
almost 5,000,000 views on thisvideo is just like flooding my
feed. Crazy. And I know maybethis sounds like, oh, really?
I should have such problems. ButI need to explain it because
it's it's important. When thefeed is clogged like that, I
can't even tell when people arecommenting on an older video.

(03:40):
And now when you start pickingup followers from a viral video,
it's typical that people will befed your other videos and
they're probably commenting onthose videos. But now, because
the feed is clogged, theactivity is all about this viral
video, you can't even get to anyother comments on any other
videos.
I'd have to go through hundredsof comments to find one that was

(04:00):
posted on another video. So Ilose such track of the comments
and it's like a little bitdamaging to my communication
abilities. I like to be able togo and see what other videos
people are commenting on. And Ican't possibly know that when
the activity feed is all aboutthis viral video, like flood,

(04:20):
flood, flood of and I love it.People are so grateful.
They're like, thank you. Thankyou. This is the best video I've
seen all day. And it feels sogood to read those comments. But
you cannot keep track now of anyother videos that are getting
comments that might be importantcomments.
And let's think about a businessowner. They have a crazy viral
video. Okay. I'm gonna useNicola. I'm gonna use you you as
an example.
But she has this video of her, wash line, her clothing line

(04:43):
outside where she's finally it'sthe the sun's out and she could
finally use her outdoor clothingline to dry her clothes. This is
what went viral for her. Butshe's a potter. She's a she does
pottery. So having all these newfollowers flood in and all these
comments on this video about aclothing line outdoors in The UK
is not gonna help her business.
So now these comments that areflying in on this viral crazy

(05:06):
video, she's missing commentsthat might be helpful on her
other videos that where she'sactually selling products.
That's a really good example.So, Nicola, I hope you don't
mind that I had to use you forthat. But I'm telling you it's
nobody nobody talks about thedownside of going viral and when
it's especially the wrong video.And it's great when you're a
business and the right videogoes viral because woohoo, you

(05:26):
know, people are clicking onyour links, they're buying your
products.
And that's not always what'shappening. So that that's number
one. It clogs up the feed. Thecomments come in so fast, you
can't keep track of them. Theother thing is this I've noticed
and I hadn't noticed this beforeever.
But I was I said, well, let meat least try and look at all the
comments on the viral video asmuch as I can. There's

(05:47):
thousands. I I'm trying to seehow many thousands. I mean, to
have a video that viral is is Ihaven't had one in a long time
that's that crazy viral. But letme just see how many comments,
for example, Just for areference point.
I think it's important. Let'ssee. So I have 10,000 11,000
comments. 10,900 comments. Nowif I even wanted to read them

(06:07):
all, which, you know, would takeme hours, I'd go through and
see.
It get I get to the bottom andit says pull up to load more,
like, you know, how you canrefresh. Nothing loads. It gets
to a point where the commentsdon't even load. So now there
might be some really clever, fun, interesting, funny,
entertaining comments in that10,000 and I'm not seeing them.

(06:30):
I'm barely seeing maybe 2,000 ofthose comments because the feed
the, video won't refresh andshow me new comments.
Okay? So that's that might be mymost number one most annoying
thing if I'm gonna pick one. Butthat that's pretty annoying
because I wanna read thecomments now. I'm like, oh, this
video is so viral. Let's go.
I'm gonna read and see what thecomments are. And I can't. I

(06:51):
can't. They won't load. I don'tknow if that's an app problem.
I don't know what that is. Butthat's the learning. Now the
next thing I have so much to sayabout this. It's sad. The next
thing is previous to this4,900,000 viewed video, previous
to that, I had a viral videothat was going pretty good and
it was at a half a million viewsand now it's at 700,000 views.

(07:14):
So I'm gonna look at the statsbecause this is the other thing
I wanna talk about. The stats onwhat happens when you have a
viral video. So let's compare700,000 viewed video with a lot
of value. It was a full lesson, how to do a split screen. It was
really clear.
It was so good for beginners andall of the things. And on that
video, I got 11,258 as of rightnow, more followers. So 11,000

(07:38):
followers came out of a videothat had 700,000 views. Remember
that stat? Now I'm gonna tellyou 5,000,000 views, 4,900,000
views.
How many followers do you thinkI would get from that? Probably
more. Right? Because 700,000versus 5,000,000. On the May

(08:00):
video, I got 9,000 followers.
Mic drop. That's ridiculous whenyou think about it because the
video didn't have as much valueto the audience that were seeing
it. It was a quick like a quicktip. It was like boom boom boom.
It was a quick tip.
It wasn't an in-depth valuablelesson. So there's some learning

(08:24):
right there That when you'resharing something with an
audience that sees incrediblevalue in it, even if it's not
the most viral video, it couldbe way more successful for
people committing to you in yourcommunity. To people joining
with you for the ride andsaying, oh, I'm gonna stick with
this person. Instead of5,000,000 people viewing a video

(08:47):
and only 9,000 of themcommitting because it wasn't
elaborate enough. It was a quickiPhone tip.
It wasn't enough. And it wasshort by the way so I didn't
make any money on it. That'sanother drawback. I didn't think
that was I didn't make thatvideo long enough. I I didn't
let it go to a minute.
Maybe it wouldn't have goneviral if it was a minute long

(09:08):
anyway. It was a quick, like, forty second, thirty second
video, quick demo of how to dosomething on the iPhone. I guess
I should have mentioned that inthe beginning. The video that
has 5,000,000 views is about howto fix the email in your, on
your iPhone with the update. Howto fix it.
So Nicola, once once again, getscredit for part one because she
told me, oh, tap the three dots. And as soon as that happened and

(09:31):
I fixed it on my husband'sphone, he's like, can't you get
rid of these icons too? And thenI did some real digging to find
out how to get rid of thoseicons. And then I made the
tutorial like, here's how tochange the get rid of the
folders. Here's how to get ridof the icons.
So the two of them get fullcredit for me having a viral
video right now. But it was soquick and it was so short and
not a lot of welcoming into whatI do. It wasn't me showing my

(09:55):
skills. It was just me showingyou a quick tip on the iPhone.
That wasn't a lot of value topeople.
I did get followers and theywere like, thank you, immediate
follow for helping me with this. But think about the percentage.
9,000 versus 5,000,000 versus onthe other video, 700,000. And I
got 11,000 followers from thatbecause it was way more

(10:16):
valuable. It was way moreinvolved.
It kept people people it gavetime for people to get invested
in me and what I was sharing. Sotake this learning. Let's like
let's really take this learning.I'm gonna write all this stuff
down because it just it provesto me that it's not the number
of people that see your content. It's who's seeing it and how

(10:37):
you've gotten them to stayinvested in what you're doing.
So huge, huge learning. I alsowas looking at some of the stats
on the short viral 5,000,000video. 38,000 arrows forwarded.
It's 38,000 people forwarded it,that means. Right?

(10:58):
The arrow. But on the 700,001,only 6,000 people forwarded it.
But 26,000 favorited it. So Idon't know. Forwarding versus
favoriting?
Maybe forwarding has the highestvalue of all? I know people like
to to make fun of the, engagefrom the bottom up because
whoever made that up is is likea pain in the neck that they

(11:21):
created whatever that is. Engagefrom the bottom up. But what it
what they're trying to say isthat the most valuable thing you
can do with a video is forwardit or favorite it, and then next
up, comment on it, next up,like. So the bottom up, even
though it's like a bogusstrategy, it's based in a

(11:41):
sequence it's based in ahierarchy hierarchy of what is
the most important in terms ofgetting something more views.
So I even though I hate the ideaof it, like, oh, that somebody
made that up, like engage fromthe bottom up. It's that's a
clever little way of saying themost important thing is
forwarding. The next importantthing is favoriting. The next
important thing is commenting. And the next important thing is

(12:04):
liking.
So it is quote from the bottomup because that's the value that
it has to the algorithm. I knowthis is a lot but I I just feel
that it warrants a deepdiscussion because I just don't
think people realize the thevalue of, somebody being
invested in you more than justfor that moment, for that fly by
night funny I've seen lots offunny videos of like a funny dog

(12:28):
thing and millions of views onsomething. And the person barely
has like a thousand followersbecause that video isn't value
valuable enough to the viewerfor them to want to follow.
There has to be a trigger, especially now when the
algorithms are so smart that ifyou like a dog video, you're

(12:49):
gonna see a lot more dog videos. So you don't even need to follow
it.
It's gonna follow you. It'sgonna find you. I promise you
that. So that's why I think mostpeople now are not following.
And Julie sent me this reallyinteresting video from Gary v.
And I do think some of thethings he says are very, very
valuable. And this one waspretty interesting because it

(13:12):
talked about how followers arenot the important thing anymore.
Content views. Getting yourcontent in front of people is
way more important than how manypeople are following you. So I
kind of wanna wrap it up withthat idea because I want you to
really sit with it and thinkabout it for a minute because it
made so much sense.
As soon as he said it, I waslike, it makes so much sense.

(13:36):
The algorithms are so smart. Thealgorithms know what to send you
for content. It's not dependenton you following necessarily. So
the value of a follow has to beso much higher now.
It has to be like the personjust doesn't wanna lose you. You
have to be offering something soincredibly special that the
person is like, I need thisperson in my life. I gotta

(13:57):
follow. Versus, oh, that wasfunny. That entertained me.
That made me laugh. I watchedit. That's not gonna prompt to
follow as much because thatperson watching knows you're
gonna get they're they are gonnaget delivered more content like
that. They don't have to followto get more of the same. You get
me?
I hope you do. I just found thisso it's like higher level

(14:21):
enlightening in a way. And itwas like it all came flooding in
when I saw the stats and thecomments and the lack of
following. I couldn't evenbelieve it. And on the one video
that I said go here to that hadthe less views, and I said go
here to join my email list.
I mean, I even got people on myemail list from that versus this

(14:42):
mad viral video. Nobody didnobody bother to click my links
in the profile? No. Because theyjust got the hot tip that I
delivered and they moved on.It's you you need to get people
more invested in your content toprompt the follow or make the
sale or get them connected andcommitted to you and loyal to

(15:03):
you so that they become investedin what you have to offer in
your personal brand, in whatyou're sharing online.
It's just so much bigger. It'sso I'm gonna say guys. I am
because it's so much bigger, guys. I sound like a YouTuber,
but it is. And sometimes it'slike poof when I think of these

(15:26):
things and I'm just like, Igotta talk about this.
Like, I gotta explain this. AndI'm not always the best with
words. You might find that funnyfor me to say as a as a person
who's podcasting and makingcontent. But I do get tongue
tied a lot. I don't feel like II don't feel like I express
myself as clearly as a lot ofthese people who are so eloquent
on their, social media contentand YouTube content in general.

(15:49):
But I know I have a lot in herethat I need to get out. So
that's why I'm here doing it. Soif you ever think I'm not as
concise or I'm not as, clear orI can't I'm not as able to
communicate, I mean, just lookat me. I mean, I'm doing it. And
I'm not even feeling like I'mgreat at it.
I just enjoy it enough so itpushes me past my self doubt.

(16:13):
Okay. That was fun. So go to thenewsletter today for the trends.
That's what I have to say aboutthat.
And there's a tutorial in there. There's music suggestions.
There's content ideas for theweek, all of the things. We even
have a little quick question inthere about what you're enjoying
the most in the newsletter, andI would love to know that.
Because when I send out thesenewsletters, I'm like, do am I

(16:35):
wasting my time pulling in, youknow, content ideas original
content ideas?
Does any everybody just want thetrends? We just really would
like to know. So if you wouldn'tmind just hitting the little
click, pick one and let us know. And if you're interested in
learning about how to edit thisweek in the studio, I am doing
a, well, first we're doingcontent reviews in our meeting
tomorrow, which is gonna be fun. That's a content review day

(16:58):
where I do quick, audits.
And the other thing we're doingis practicing making content
right in the apps so that youdon't have spend time editing.
So if you have a really roughweek and you're like, I'm not
gonna have time to edit or makecontent, quick ways to edit in
app is helpful. So I'm doing Idid a quick lesson on that for
everybody, a little challengefor the week. And next week,
we're gonna get into quick cutHow to do quick cutting videos

(17:21):
to make your content moreviewable and more people get to
suck people in a little more.Suck them in.
