Helen (00:00):
Welcome to the Socialize
Strategy. Happy Friday. It has
(00:03):
been one heck of a week overhere, having returned from Vegas
and gotten back into the thickof things. Wow. What can I say?
I gashed my lip open and havefifteen stitches in my bottom
lip, if you're watching. Mybottom my lower left lip area.
And what happened is I got up inthe middle of the night, felt
(00:23):
some severe back pain as I wentgot up to turn on the air
conditioner because it was hotin the room. And as I was going
back into bed and I felt thisback pain, I got lightheaded
thinking about, what am I gonnahave to have back surgery or
something? And just gettinginside my head, even since
childhood has always been athing where I got like a little
lightheaded and didn't get tothe bed quick enough, and next
thing I know I was on the floor, but I had gashed my lip open on
(00:44):
the edge of the bed.
So that's the story, and it hasbeen an adventure. So I have
stitches, so I'm gonna be takinggetting them taken out on
Saturday. All is well. I'm fine.Nothing's wrong with my head.
People were very concerned aboutthat when I posted on my
Instagram story, but it's reallyjust something that has always
been with me since childhood. When I used to get blood taken,
(01:05):
would get lightheaded. Sometimesif I would get hurt on the
playground, I remember gettinglightheaded. So those things,
that's always been a part of me.So this was the same kind of
thing.
I just started thinking backsurgery, and I just got
lightheaded and, boom, down Iwent. I've really gotten better
about getting blood taken thoughsince chemo. That fixed me. But,
that's what happened, and I amdoing fine and recovering. But
(01:26):
before we get into the topic fortoday, I did wanna do two
unsponsored by topics becauseone of them I'm wearing and one
of them I'm sharing.
And I this the one I'm wearingis definitely a topic on TikTok.
So if you know cakes, the brandcake spotty, it is basically
these, like, rubber nipple coverthings that you put on your
(01:48):
boobs if you don't wanna wear abra. Okay? But the way they
marketed this to me on TikTok,I'm telling you, I it was like,
lift your boobs. They you don'tneed a bra like, hello.
I'm here to tell you, they donot lift your boobs. Okay? They
do not lift your boobs. I'mgonna tell it to you a bunch
more times. They just don't.
(02:09):
They do what they claim to do,which is nipple coverage. But
I'm telling you, the the ads andthe people promoting this on
TikTok would put them on andlift the boob up under a shirt
and be like, look at thedifference in one boob's down
here and one boob's up here.Like, no. Okay? I'm here to tell
you no.
It doesn't work like that. Donot get yourself sucked into
those ads thinking that theseare gonna be the answer to
(02:31):
lifting because even with noteven big boobs like mine are not
that big. It's not gonna worklike that. Alright? So that's
the honest review.
I'm gonna show you one rightnow. Take one off so you could
see. It just in case you don'tknow about it. It just sticks.
It's it's very comfortableactually on.
It just kind of adheres to yourskin without it being sticky.
There's nothing sticky here atall. It just the way the heat, I
(02:53):
guess, goes on your skin. Andthen this side, they say, oh, it
attaches to the fabric. And thenwhen the fabric the fabric will
lift your boob.
Yeah. No. You put that in there, and you're gonna do that. It's
not staying there. It's notlifting.
Trust me. It is not. The end. Sothat's my honest review of of
cakes, and they're good for whatthey're what they meant for, but
(03:14):
not for what a lot of people aretalking about on ads. Next.
My next thing. I'm not evengoing to call it. It's
unsponsored by I don't know howI haven't even talked about this
brand before because look whathappens when I show you what's
on my desk. I'm raising up mydesk right now. It's a standing
desk.
Lifting it up, and I'm going toshow you how many oh, hold on.
Let me fix that. I wanna showyou how many of these things I
(03:36):
have. This is the Aloha brand.Okay?
Look at one, two, three, four, five, six. I have seven
different sizes. I also have onereally big one that's at the
beach. I am obsessed with thisbrand. I love that I love that
they are these are just likepouches in all different sizes,
(03:57):
so you can use them foranything.
You can use them for wires andcords and, here, nail polishes.
Okay? Medicines, toiletries forwhen I travel and I just want a
lightweight, if I want just anovernight bag, lightweight
toiletries for my short trips.Hold on. Jewelry, okay?
This one has, I think, just likelip lip stuff, lip organizing
(04:21):
stuff. This is like travel nailfiles and stuff, like literally
have, I think I probably havemore of them. I just pulled out
as many as I could to share withyou. I'm obsessed with this
brand. The name is Aloha, and Ihave I have nothing bad to say
about it.
They they make purses and allsorts of things, but when it
comes to a pouch a pouch system, they have my soul because I love
(04:44):
that they don't add any extraweight, and I like that they're
all differentiated. Like, I knowimmediately that this one is my
nail polishes because I have itin my head. I this one is my
medicines. So color coded, whatever. This is a nice brand.
I like it. Go investigate, andthey have all different sizes.
Okay. That's my one of my faves.Let's get into it for today,
(05:06):
tips for creating high qualityvideos.
And the reason I wanna talkabout it is because in my
studio, a lot of people haveasked me what are my camera
settings. And because I shootfor brands, I'm going to be
shooting for Secret, Deodorantnext week. Because I shoot for
brands, they often ask me, oh,what are your camera settings?
And I always shoot with the samecamera settings even for when I
(05:27):
even when I work on projectswhere I'm hired to do it. So I'm
gonna tell you why I choose mycamera settings, and of course,
are there better quality camerasettings than the ones that I
use?
Yes. But they take up so muchdata on your phone that if you
shoot consistently like that, you're gonna run out of storage
on your phone, and you're alsogonna have trouble transferring
(05:49):
those shots to another device.Like, the airdrop thing is gonna
take forever get them off, andyou're gonna have to be doing it
manually plugging in into a harddrive. It becomes debilitating.
So there's I always like to finda balance between good quality
and manageable data, and thatthat's where I find my sweet
spot.
So we're gonna talk about it.Yay. Okay. Now I don't even know
(06:13):
if a lot of people know they canadjust their camera settings,
but if you go into and I'll walkyou through the steps because I
do think it's always important,so I'm gonna do it as I talk it.
So if you go into settings andjust scroll down the main page,
right to below general, you'regonna see camera.
You tap it. I'll hold it up forthe people that are here. So you
can see there's lots of optionsif you're watching. You can do
(06:34):
recording at ten eighty p at 30frames per second. You can do
seven twenty p at 30 frames persecond.
You can do high HD at 60 framesper second. I'll tell you what
the difference is with that, andthen it goes up to four k. So
I'm gonna start with telling youthat four k is incredible. The
fact that our phones can shootat this quality, if you're gonna
make a feature film and youwanna use your phone, you're
(06:56):
gonna use four k because it'sgonna go on a gigantic screen in
a movie theater, and you needthe highest definition that you
can get. So if you are producinga feature film with your phone,
you're gonna wanna go with fourk.
Now considering most of us arenot producing or directing or
filming feature films on ourphone, they are films, they may
(07:16):
be features, but they may bejust viewable on a computer or
on a or on another phone device, you don't really need that high
quality because what it's gonnado is make every file so big.
And I recently I was asked to doit for a couple of shots at a
shoot recently, and it tookforever for that. I think the
company was also shooting four kwith their phone, and they
couldn't even get the data, thevideos out of their phone quick
(07:38):
enough to get it to a harddrive. Just really slowed the
process down. So if you'replanning to do something like
that, you wanna be mindful ofyour time to transfer these
files to get them out.
It's also going to eat thestorage on your phone very
quickly, so you have to makesure your phone storage is
optimized so not so thateverything isn't saving locally
and completely eating your data.Okey doke. So that's the thing
(08:01):
about four k. Now the differencebetween ten eighty p at 30
frames per second and ten eightyp at 60 is that 60 frames per
second, if you were to put itinto an edit app and tell it to
play it back in a project thatis running 30 frames per second,
it is going to give you a slowmotion effect, and it will be
(08:21):
much cleaner video in slowmotion versus filming at 30
frames and then slowing it downto half speed because then
you're going to take those 30frames and be spreading it
across the double length of timeinstead of having double the
amount of frames to work with.So it's just a matter of quality
(08:42):
if you so okay.
That said, I do not have mycamera set to record at 60
frames per second. I have it setto record at 30 frames per
second because in in the end, that's gonna be better for my
95% of my videos. Very rarely amI gonna take a video and do it
and slow it down. But for thetimes that I do, I know that my
(09:03):
quality is gonna be a littleless than it could be if I was
filming at 60. If I knew aheadof time, I'm gonna I wanna use
this shot and I wanna do it andhave use it in slow motion,
instead of filming in slowmotion, what I do is I will then
change it to 60 frames persecond because it'll be better
quality when I slow it down.
Okay. I'm I'm going slow becauseI don't want people to get lost
(09:26):
with a lot of technical jargon. But I'm gonna now talk about
seven twenty p, and that isdefinitely lesser quality. So if
you have less storage on yourphone, less space, and you're
desperate to shoot more video, then going to seven twenty is
fine. It's going to be great forjust online video content.
But for my druthers, ten eightyp is solid, and you can always
(09:50):
go export and go down inquality. You can never go up in
quality. When once you export, once you film, you can't
increase the quality. So you'rebetter off shooting at nice full
ten eighty p high def. That wayyou have everything that you
need.
You're never gonna be able toget it to go up to four k. It's
never gonna look as good as fourk, but it's gonna be so much
cleaner than doing it at seventwenty. Okay? So what are your
(10:13):
settings? What should they be inthe at the end of the day?
Ten eighty p HD at 30 frames persecond. That is my
recommendation. And then if youwant to be covered for slow
motion, you can do it at 60 FPS.60 f so ten eighty p HD at 60
FPS, and that would get youbetter quality if you were to
slow those videos down after thefact. Now let's just speak
(10:37):
quickly about slow motion.
There are two options in yourslow motion settings. One is one
twenty FPS, and one is two fortyFPS. Two forty, higher the
number, slower the video. Higherthe number of frames per second,
slower the video when you playit back. I have mine set to one
twenty.
I don't think I ever reallyneed, like, a teardrop slow
(11:00):
motion like quality, which wouldbe two forty FPS. Actually, a
teardrop dropping is usually athousand FPS on a fancy high end
camera, but I just go with onetwenty. And I will say, the
higher your number of frames persecond, the more light you need
to have good quality video. So Idid a video at one point, I
said, oh, I'm gonna shoot it inslow motion because I was gonna
(11:22):
do a bunch of jumping things andthen add them together, and I
wanted to not have to slow itdown after the fact. That video
bugs me to this day because thequality is grainier.
I didn't have enough lightcoming in the window to really
offset the fact that it needs somuch more light in the in the
lens to get that to be goodquality. So I don't I don't
(11:43):
really recommend shooting inslow motion. However, if you
like doing that, you'recertainly welcome to do it when
you when you want to. And thenwhen you and then when you
export it or when you're playingwith it, can always change where
the slow motion starts andstops. But if you shoot it in
your regular camera, you canalways change where you want it
to go slower and faster inCapCut.
(12:04):
CapCut has so much so muchadvanced, like, settings of time
and, speed where you can tap it,and then you can have it make a
curve where it goes fast, slow, fast, slow. Like, it has all
these curve options. You candouble, triple, quadruple the
speed, or you can slow it downso tremendously. So you have a
lot of leeway in the CapCut app.Instead of trying to shoot it in
(12:27):
slow motion in your phone, Ihighly recommend just shooting
it at regular speed and thenputting it into the app where
you wanna slow it down.
That's just my personalrecommendation. Alright. Then we
have this cinematic setting. Dowe care about this cinematic
setting? If you're a filmmakerand you wanna make a even if
(12:48):
you're not a filmmaker, let'ssay you wanna make a spoof film.
You're a content creator and youwanna make a spoof film. This
this camera is for youpotentially because you can do
dramatic, like it it throws thebackground out of focus a little
bit, and it keeps only theforeground in focus, so it looks
very filmic. And it also givesyou the option to do 24 FPS at
(13:09):
four k. So you're again, we'retalking about higher data,
higher frames per more more, taken up on your phone, more
data. So therefore the files aregonna be bigger because they're
much better quality.
And then when you that wholeproblem of sending it and
getting it transferred toanother device, it's gonna take
longer. But when you shoot at 24frames per second, you're
(13:30):
getting more of a film vibe, andthat's what that lens is
designed for. So when you recordin cinematic and you go to that
four k and you suck it up andsay I'm gonna kill my data and
shoot at 20 frames frame 24frames per second, you're gonna
get more of a feature film typeof vibe. Alright. That's what
the cinematic is for.
I rarely use it because youcan't zoom. So the minute I know
(13:53):
that I'm accidentally in acinematic is when I'm trying to
zoom in and I can't zoom. I'mlike, I'm in the wrong thing, so
I gotta switch back to regularvideo. So on your camera, in
case you're not aware, thebottom settings, oh, it's hard
to see it so far away, but youhave videos, photo, and then you
have cinematic. So if youaccidentally choose cinematic,
you won't be able to zoom in.
(14:14):
So that just be aware that inorder to zoom, you have to be
not in cinematic because thatlens will not let you zoom. I do
say I like I like that there'sall these options with the
settings because it gives us somuch power in the palm of our
hand to be creative and makemore more, I don't know, higher
end videos. Like, you have theoption here. Even though I'm not
(14:36):
gonna use this option to make afeature film, I like that the
option is here, and I like thatI would occasionally, if I
wanted to record something andmake it feel like cinematic,
like some kind of, you know, Icould do a trend where it's like
Taylor Swift running the therunning on the beach trend.
Shooting that at cinematic wouldbe gorgeous, and it would feel
like a music video.
So that those are the types oftimes that you might want to
(14:58):
consider using the differentlenses. Alright. So that
hopefully explains a little bitabout the settings. I went in
deep, way deeper than I did inthe newsletter, so that's why
you're here, hope. Okay.
Now if you don't use some ofthose camera settings, don't be
distressed. Like, there's alsotime lapse, but you don't have
to shoot time lapse. You can,you know, shoot something and
(15:20):
then speed it up and or you canedit it to chop out parts to
make it feel faster. So youdon't have to use all the
settings on your phone. It'sjust it's nice to know that
occasionally, you know, it'sit's an option for you.
Like, you you have them. I I dothink being aware of what is
needed to make certain camerasettings be more effective, like
to have to to know the simplefact that you need more light to
(15:42):
shoot better slow motion. Bingo. That's a hot tip. Here's another
hot tip.
Don't shoot slow motion inflicker in lights, like store
lights, because it'll flicker.Everything will flicker. So lit
places that have lightinginside, stores, hospitals,
restaurants, like that. A lot oftimes when you shoot in slow
(16:04):
motion, you'll notice aflickering, and that's what is
what is causing it is the speedof your lens versus the speed of
the lights. I noticed thisheavily when I was in Croatia
because my camera settings werenot in sync with the Croatian
light system.
So all of my lights wereflickering in my videos, which
was crazy because I'm shootingat 30 frames per second, and the
(16:26):
lights in Croatia would be at 25frames per second, the
frequency. Listen, I don't knowthat much about the lighting
frequencies, but I just knowthat PAL versus NTSC is a
difference, 25 frames per secondversus 30 frames per second, and
that makes a difference in a lotof times you'll see glitching in
certain videos when they're notrunning at the the right speed.
(16:50):
That is more high endfilmmaking. Sorry to get into
that, but onward we go. Alright.
Said it before, good lighting, very important. So I'm gonna
skip over that section because Ireally got into lighting well
into lighting already. This is abig one now that Julie
constantly gets on me about, andI figured out why, so I'm gonna
tell you what the issue is, andI'm gonna tell you what she
(17:11):
thought she was seeing, and thenthe reality. Okay? Clean your
camera lens because a lot oftimes you don't realize that
your phone's in your pocket, your phone's in your purse, your
phone's wherever it is, and thatyou might have a phone protector
on, but the lens is usuallycover isn't always covered on a
lot of those phone protectors.
So your lens could be smudgy, and you could be filming, and
all of a sudden, oh my gosh, Ihave, like, marks on my lens.
(17:33):
Now I'm gonna tell you whathappened to me. When I zoom out
to point five, something happensin my iPhone where the lens gets
blurrier. It happens I can seeit. My shot's clear.
I go point five, and all of asudden, it gets like a haze over
it. So what she thought was mynot clean camera lens is
(17:56):
actually some kind of a weirdglitch in both of my phones. And
I thought I don't know if it'san iPhone 14 problem in general
or just a problem with the phoneor a problem with, the operating
system or the camera itself. Butwhen I'm filming along the way
here, shooting, shooting, shooting, I'm at one. I'm at
one.
The minute I tap point five, everything gets a haze over it,
(18:20):
and it looks like a filter, likea hazy filter. And the minute I
go back to one, it's clearagain. So there's a glitch, and
I don't know if it's in all ofthe phones. I'd love to know if
you have this happen to you.Open up your camera, and then
make sure you're on, like, regular, pointing not on your
selfie camera, the one you know, you're filming something else.
(18:42):
And then tap point five and seeif something comes like hazy on
your phone. So frustratingbecause my next tip is to use
the back camera and use thepoint five, yet I'm having this
severe problem every time I goto the point five lens where I'm
getting a haze over it. And alot of times I'll notice it's
only indoors from outside, andmaybe it's just because it's
better lit outside. I don'tnotice it as much. But when you
(19:05):
it's a good idea to take yourphone, point it at something,
you're on point one, then tapthat little on the on the
settings right underneath, rightabove the record button.
You'll see point five one. Whatare the options? Let me see.
Point five it says point fiveone x and then two and three. So
go to one, hold up your camerato point it at something, and
(19:27):
let it focus on something.
God forbid it could focus onsomething right now. Now
everything looks hazy. What'sgoing on with my phone? Hold on.
Let me film you.
Okay. This is looking good. I'mfilming you right now. So I've
got this one x. Everything isclear, crystal clear.
I could see myself, my phonehere. I go point five.
(19:47):
Immediately, haze goes over thescreen. Weird. And then as soon
as I zoom in slowly, slowly, slowly, I hit a point where it
gets clear again.
I don't know what's going onwith it. But take a look at your
phone and see if you're gettingthat haze and just be careful
because I do think the pointfive lens is so cool. I use it a
lot for taking pictures. I tapthat point five, I turn it
(20:10):
around, and I snap a selfie, andthen I'm not getting just my
face in the selfie. I'm gettingthe whole scene behind me.
So I highly recommend using thatpoint five lens. Just be aware
of this weird glitch that somepeople are having where when
they go back to point five, itgets a little fuzzy and weird.
Don't know what to say aboutthat. But I I was thinking about
(20:32):
upgrading to an iPhone 16, somaybe the time is now. We'll
see.
Soon enough, I have to do it.I'm gonna have to bite the
bullet at some point. But I dolike using the back camera. I
also think it takes practice toknow where to look in the back
camera because when you'refacing it, you think you're
pointing it right at you, butyou're more pointing it at the
person next to you potentially. So just do some practicing, take
(20:54):
a few shots, and find out theangle, and and you'll remember
it.
Like, just take a look and go,okay. Over here, it was I was
too far to the right, so I'mgonna tilt it a little bit this
way. And just play around withit until you get that knack.
They also make little mirrorsfor the backs of the phone. So
you can put a little mirror backhere, and then it'll show you
what the lens is seeing.
(21:15):
I don't know how accurate that'sgonna be because if the mirror
is not actually on the lens, butJulie uses it, and she thinks
those work well. So it gives hera sense of where she is in the
frame. Okay. That is it fortoday. I am talking way too
long.
I think I kicked off with thecakes. I got into it and the
bags. This was a long one. Ialso shouldn't be talking so
(21:39):
long with my lip in the currentstate that it's in. So I'm going
to sign off.
I'm going to leave you twohaving a wonderful weekend. I am
going to be traveling next week, you can follow along with my
adventures always on myInstagram story, which is where
I usually share more of my dayto day updates. If you have any
questions, anything you'd liketo talk about in a podcast, I
would love to hear from you, honestly. And I read all the
(22:01):
comments. If you leave it on theYouTube channel, if you, you
know, wanna respond to thenewsletter, however you wanna
get the comment to me, thefeedback to me, I'm always open
to it because I I love to knowwhat topics you might wanna hear
about in these strategy sessionsso that we can tackle it all
together.
Lastly, I'll just leave youwith, if you're not in the
studio, I hope to see you theresoon. Bye.
