Helen (00:00):
Welcome to the Socialized
Strategy. Happy Friday and happy
(00:02):
April. And we are coming up uponApril 5, which is when TikTok
was supposed to be banned again, which doesn't look like it's
gonna happen. So nobody's reallyeven posting the the fearful,
like, goodbye posts like theywere the for the last ban. But
it is likely now that the appmay be bought right now, today,
as of today, as of me recordingthis, they're talking about
(00:23):
Amazon potentially buying it,and we surely hope it doesn't
turn into just an Amazon salesshop tool.
But, you know, that potentiallycould happen. We're gonna have
to wait and see. We canhypothesize all we want.
Everybody can write their, youknow, their predictions and
their articles, but nobodyreally knows. It's really we're
at the mercy of, well, let's seewhat's gonna happen and let's
see if the algorithm is gonnachange and if we're gonna like
(00:44):
it and if we're gonna stay or ifwe're gonna move somewhere else.
I think we'll just we're allkind of waiting and and seeing.
And that's what I'm gonna bedoing, and I will be sharing in
the newsletter all the updatesthat we we find out as this as
this weekend passes, and we findout what's happening with the
app itself. But let's move on tothe topic for today, and also I
(01:05):
wanna mention that I'm gonna beanswering a lot of questions at
the end of this episode. Sostick around for question
answerings for for sure. Buttoday's topic is how to maximize
music on social media, and thisis going to cover you no matter
what social media app you'reusing.
We're gonna talk about thebenefits of using music and and
why to do it, the different waysto work with music, and how to
(01:27):
maximize it to help your contentget optimized. Alright. The
first the first topic is theobvious one. When you use
trending music, you have abetter chance of being seen on
the for you page, on the for youfeed in Instagram. Same thing
with YouTube.
If something's trending, hop onit because that's how you're
gonna get more views. Does thatmean those viewers are gonna
(01:48):
turn into followers? That reallydepends on the type of content
you put with the music. Thatdoesn't just depend on the
music. So the music trendinggreat doesn't mean you're gonna
get followers from it.
What it does do is it's definitethat these trending musics, the
ones that are popular andtrending for whatever reason,
whether artists are payingcreators to post with it,
because of course that's a wholebusiness. There's a lot of
(02:10):
reasons music trends and some ofit is just suddenly random.
Somebody will post somethingwith an old eighties tune and
the next thing you know, aFleetwood Mac song is trending
with an ocean spray guy on askateboard drinking some ocean
spray. And that is more of a arandom trend versus music where
it's being pushed because anartist is paying now to have
creators using their new musicon their album and they're
(02:33):
trying to get views. So there'sa lot of nuances of the music on
these apps just that you need tobe aware of.
But the idea of using trendingmusic is to put yourself in a
better position to be seen.Okay? And the problem, of
course, with some of these musicis that some of the music is
that if you're a businessaccount, we'll talk about that
as we get through it, but someof these tracks are not
(02:54):
available to use for businessaccounts. We're gonna talk about
that. But so let's get to thenext part, which is when you put
music on your video, you wannabalance it so that it's not
overtaking your video becausethat will cause terrible
engagement on your video.
If someone's scrolling andyou're talking and your music is
so loud that you can't be heard, nobody's sticking around to
listen to that video because itbecomes a strain on the viewer
(03:17):
to try and hear what you'resaying. I mean, it's a fact.
It's not gonna I I hear itsometimes and I'm like, oh my
gosh, I can't even hear whatthey're saying. Scroll. It's
just not a good idea.
So you definitely want to makesure, and this is where I say it
is such a lower percentage thanyou even think. When you scroll
that bar down to lower thevolume on the music, you wanna
be under 10% on the music. That's how low you need to be in
(03:40):
order to be successful and to beheard. Not to be successful, but
to be successfully heard. Youneed to be low on the music.
You can't it's it's almostbetter to be too low than too
loud. It's definitely better tobe too low than too loud, not
not almost better. Definitelybetter. Alright. So think about
that and make sure you'relowering that level.
(04:00):
All of the music apps have theoption for you to tap on audio
and then adjust levels. OnTikTok, you tap on the word
volume. On Instagram, I think itsays I think there's music
notes, and you tap on it, andyou can lower the volume. I
forget what the actual icon is,but it's doable on the apps for
sure. Same with YouTube shorts.
Alright? So use those musics, balance them down, lower them.
(04:24):
Now let's talk about use usingthe type of music for your
videos if you are speaking. AndI'm a big proponent of saying to
you, don't use music with lyricsif you're putting it under
yourself speaking. Music withlyrics on b roll videos or music
videos where you're showing yourhometown or you're showing
scenery on a vacation, lyrics,go for it.
(04:47):
But if you're speaking and thenyour video has music with with
lyrics, so there's another voicespeaking. It's like someone's
talking over you if you thinkabout it. So don't kind of get
away from that. I try to reallypay attention to the music that
I pick, not having lyrics, orhaving a nice instrumental
opening section before thelyrics hit so you can use that
(05:08):
part of the music for yourvideo. It's really believe it or
not, it's it's an a subconsciousthing that the viewer is gonna
be trying to hear the words tothe song and then missing
completely what you're saying.
Even if you do lower itproperly, it we, as creatures,
we recognize a song and thelyrics might come into our head,
and then all of a sudden we'renot listening to what the
(05:29):
speaker is saying in the video.Alright? So think about that.
Make sure that you're picking asong where the lyrics if you're
talking. Lower the instrumentaldown and make it a nice support
thing so that it doesn't have tobe blasting in your ear or
playing another audio thatsomeone has to focus on.
Because I find myself when Ihear a song with words, I'll be
(05:52):
singing the words in my headversus listening to what the
person is saying. Next one isbeing careful about copyrights.
So as we know, of course, thisis problematic, when you're a
business account, you don't evenhave the rights to use some of
the trending sounds because themusic artists are they would
need to get paid for you to bepromoting products using their
(06:14):
music, which makes sense. Justlike a commercial, you can't as
a producer, I can't put, youknow, a Meghan Trainor song on
my TV commercial and run it onTV because Meghan Trainor should
get paid for the rights for meto use her song. So it's the
same thing if you're promoting aproduct and you're making money
from a product on TikTok becauseyou're selling something.
Of course, the artist should bepaid because that artist is
(06:37):
helping you promote yourproduct. So because that because
the artist isn't getting paidfrom you, they block all of
those musics from businessaccounts so that you can't use
them. And that can be veryfrustrating for business
accounts because there's trendsthey wanna do and they can't do
them. And then the Applesuggests a music, and of course,
(06:58):
it's a terrible track comparedto the one you wanted to pick.
So it's very frustrating, andthis is one of the things that
we try and do in the studio ishelp business accounts to
understand what type of contentthey they can create that
doesn't necessarily requiremusic but could be trending.
And so there's ideas that aretrending that you can do that
(07:18):
have nothing to do with music oraudio. There are also some
audios that are usable. Eventhough they're parts of songs,
the way the trending the personwho has uploaded it, the way
they have uploaded it and madeit like an original sound for
themselves makes it availablefor you to use. So it's always
worth tapping on sending yoursif you have a business account,
(07:40):
sending that audio to youraccount and seeing if it's
usable. Like, just do a littletap on it and see if it allows
you to use it because some ofthem are, believe it or not.
Even though it seems like theywouldn't be, some of them are
even though because of the waythe creator has uploaded that
sound. And I wanted to addressthis a little bit, unofficially
(08:01):
because we didn't put this intothe newsletter, but there are
some DJs and some creators whoseem to get away with putting
music from shows on theirvideos, and they don't get
flagged. Typically, the app isgonna flag any video that has a
sound on it that you didn't addin app. I mean, that's typically
(08:25):
the case. If you do play musicin the room when you're
recording a video and that musicis picked up when you post your
video, your music your audioyour video is gonna get muted,
typically.
It's like the sound won't beplaying, and you might even get
a violation. So I don't knowwhat the kind of the code to
crack on how some people areable to upload music and not get
(08:49):
flagged for it. It's possiblethat there's a creator group.
There's DJs do it, and they cando it maybe because they're
official DJs. Not quite sure whysome people get away with it.
And I think it's also random.Sometimes the app misses
flagging it, and then it goesviral. And so then tons of
people are using that thatcontent, and then it it doesn't
(09:11):
get muted. So there's a littlebit of, I guess, mystery to why
some people are able to use someof these copyrighted things on
their videos and not getflagged. But, haven't cracked a
good code answer on that foryou, so I don't want to tell you
go ahead and do it because I cantell you that you're going to
get flagged if you do it.
If you put a copyrighted audioor a copyrighted video on there,
(09:34):
you're gonna you're gonna end upwith a violation. So I don't
want that to happen to youbecause I'm the mothership, and
I gotta take care of you. Theother thing I get asked a lot,
and I mean, if I could if I hada dime for every person that
asked me this question in mycomment section, how do I use
multiple songs on my TikTok? Iget that all the time. And now,
of course, how do you usemultiple songs on Instagram?
(09:54):
Same question. Multiple songs ona YouTube. Short. The answer is
you legally cannot, and that'swhy they don't allow you to do
it on the app. That's why theydon't make it very easy.
They won't make it possibleeven. It's not easy. They don't
even make it possible to to addmultiple sounds. But you can in
CapCut put multiple sounds, andthen you could you could take
your chances. You could uploadit and, you know, put your
(10:16):
multiple sound video and see ifit gets flagged, and you can
certainly do that and try it.
But typically, when I suggestyou, use music in an edit app
and then you put music on there,I I always suggest to replace
the music when you put it ontosocial media. This way you don't
get flagged and you don't getmuted, because I don't want you
to do something I tell you to doand then your account gets a
(10:38):
copyright or gets taken away orsomething like that. So the
legitimate legal way to putmusic on is you add it to your
CapCut project. You can makeyour edits to the music, make
the video the way you want it,but when you export and upload
that over to your TikTok or yourInstagram, that you add back the
music. So this way, you you getthe credit for the music that's
(11:00):
on there, that's on the app, andyou don't get flagged or have
your video taken down.
Okay? Okay. The next thing ismoving a section of the song.
Here's another question I get alot. The song that I my video is
a minute and the music's onlyfifteen seconds and I want to
make it loop.
(11:21):
Okay. And I want to make itlonger. Okay. I wanna find a
different section of the music.Okay.
So the answer is all of thesethings are dependent on if the
music that you choose, thelength of what is available
because on TikTok, sometimes youonly have fifty seconds fifteen
seconds of the music, and that'sall they negotiated as an app to
(11:43):
have the rights to. So there isnot a one minute version, so
you're stuck. You can't loop themusic. They don't let you do
that. So you've got to findmusic that is longer than your
video in order to adjust thesection.
So let me say that again. If youhave a video that is fifteen
seconds long and you choose amusic track on TikTok, for
(12:06):
example, and it's a minute longmusic track, you can then tap
the little scissors and you canslide the part of the music you
want to use. But if the video isfifteen seconds and the music is
fifteen seconds, you can't makeany adjustments. That's it.
That's the fifteen seconds thatthe app is allowing you to use.
Okay? If it's a twenty secondvideo, your video is gonna have
(12:28):
five seconds of silence. You getit? You can't adjust the music
if the video is wait a minute. You can't adjust the music if
the video is longer than themusic.
You can adjust the music if thevideo is shorter than the music
that is available. So music isshorter okay. Hold on. If the
(12:52):
video is shorter than the music, then you can slide the mute part
of the music and find adifferent section of it. It's so
hard to explain this in words.
It's much easier to show this ina tutorial. But hopefully, I got
the point across. Okay. The lastthing I'm going to say about
music actually came in as aquestion. And now I'm going to
(13:15):
go into answering a bunch of thequestions that we've got over
the past two weeks, I think.
These are some of the questionsthat have come in to the
newsletter. So thank you forsubmitting your questions. I
love I love having theopportunity to answer them. And
please do submit questions. Ifyou hear this, go to the
newsletter today and drop aquestion in, and I will be happy
to answer it next Friday.
Alright. The next quest thefirst question is about music.
(13:36):
Should you always add music evenif you lower all the volume all
the way? Like, should you putmusic on a video? So if you
don't wanna have music playingin the background, the question
is should you add it anyway andlower the volume all the way?
Now here's my suggestion tothat. I don't think every video
has to have music. I thinkthere's a lot of videos and many
(13:56):
that go viral that have no musicat all. So you're not obligated
to use music. There is a theorythat if you put music on and you
lower it all the way, your videowill get sent out to people on
the For You page who are likingthat audio track.
But the odds are if the personwho's listening to your video is
listening to it because it cameup on the with the music they
(14:19):
like, they will not hear musicand they will likely scroll. You
get it? So it's not a guaranteethat someone's gonna get your
video and then all of a suddenwatch it just because it
happened to have trending musicon it. Because number one,
they're not hearing the music. And number two, maybe that video
maybe they wanted to see music avideo with that music, but they
(14:41):
wanna hear the music.
And so your video doesn't havethe music, so they're gonna
scroll on. So I don't think it'sa must, and I don't I do think
that a lot of creators are verysuccessful making content with
no music on their on theirvideos. The other advantage to
not having music on their videosis think about when in when was
this? About a year ago when thatthing happened with the music
(15:02):
where a bunch of the music gotmuted on TikTok. Remember that?
Okay. You know what happened? Alot of people who had talking
videos who happen to have musicunderneath, if it was trending
music, all their mute talkingvideos got silenced. So what a
relief that on many of mytalking videos, I never added
music. And so mine were mytutorials were still there.
(15:22):
But a couple of tutorials, on myshorter ones, I might add a
music piece back there to justhave some music playing, and
they got muted. So an advantageto to not adding music is the
fact that if ever the musicsever got muted again, you would
have a video that would still beheard. So that's a little
advantage to the to thatanswering that question. So you
don't have to always add music, but you can once in a while if
(15:44):
you wanna stick one on there. But it's definitely not
mandatory.
Okay. On to other questions.First one is, is there a
replacement app for CapCut if itgoes away again? There's a lot
of replacement apps. A lot ofoptions for you.
But I have tried these threepersonally, and so I will share
them with you. One is very, verysimilar looking to CapCut, and
(16:07):
it's spelled m as in Mary, e I tu. Mietu or Mitu, I think is how
it's spoken. So Me Too is a redicon. It is also Chinese owned,
so who knows, maybe it'll goaway if things other things go
away.
But I really like it becauseit's very similar to CapCut.
It's free. It's easy to use. Thefeatures are all very similar,
so it'll look familiar. Thesecond one I have tried that I
(16:31):
like a lot is Videoleap.
Although, in my opinion, it's abit expensive because you have
to pay an annual fee for thisapp, and it's like a hundred
it's over the over the hundreddollar mark for but it's an
annual fee. Maybe it's even 200.But over the course of a year,
if you edit a lot, it's worthpaying for because it's a really
nice app. It's very userfriendly, easy to learn. And I
(16:53):
was really gonna suggest it as,like, the backup to CapCut,
quite frankly, cause it has allof the features, and it's very
easy to see where those featuresare.
Well presented. The other one isInShot. I'm not a fan. I used it
a little bit, and I thought, this isn't as intuitive. And it
might be because I'm so CapCuttrained, and Videoleap mirrored
it a little better, so Iimmediately liked Videoleap
(17:15):
better.
But InShot is an option, and youcan try it, and yeah. There you
go. Those are those are somethree choices for you. And
there's plenty more, so scopearound. You might like iMovie.
I don't really like using iMoviebecause it's better for
horizontal videos, but give yougive it a whirl and see what you
think. And next question. Can wepreschedule TikTok posts? Ta ta
(17:39):
ta ta. You can, but you gottause the desktop version of
TikTok.
You can go to TikTok.com. Youcan log in. You can upload your
video. You can add music.There's not a there's I wanna I
thought there was somelimitations with the TikTok
desktop.
I don't even know because Idon't do the pres I don't do
prescheduling myself. I just putthings in drafts, I release them
(18:02):
as I want to. But, yes, you can. There is a scheduler in the
TikTok.com on your desktop. Soyay to that.
I know a lot of social mediaagencies use it. Alright. Now
this one is interesting. Isthere a way to answer a comment
in an Instagram Reel? Yes.
You just press the comment, andthen you can tap reply with
(18:26):
video. I'm gonna look at my Ihaven't done this in a while on
Instagram, so I'm actually gonnalook at it while I'm talking to
you. Let's see if I wanted toanswer answer a question with a
video. Tapping on a comment.Okay.
I tap reply, and next to to thefar left where you type the
reply to the comment, there's alittle camera icon. When you tap
(18:48):
that camera icon, it will allowyou to make a video or upload a
video. So it's very easy to do,and it looks really nice.
Actually, here's a comment, andthen I would just make a video,
right, just right like that, orI could pick a video in the
bottom corner. So that's how youdo that.
Fantastic. Hopefully this helpsthe question asker. And the next
(19:09):
question, and I'm gonna makethis the last question for
today, is what is a media kit?So a while back, I made a news
we did a newsletter and I made apodcast about, how to get brand
deals and how how peopleapproach that, the different
ways you can monetize bybecoming an influencer. Joining
some influencer platforms ormaking a media kit and then
(19:32):
reaching out to individualbrands on your own, and the
person asks what is a media kit.
And that is very simply a onesheet. Think of a sales sheet.
Like you go into a store andyou're going to buy a bed and
they give you a flyer. And theflyer shows you the specs of the
bed and the size and the ding dada ding, and it gives you all
the highlights of why thismattress is good and why the box
spring is good or whatever. It'sa one sheet.
(19:53):
A media kit is a one sheet thathas your photo, your handles,
your it's your resume. That'sanother way to say it. It's like
your resume, but in a differentway because a resume is mostly
just words, and a media kittypically will have some photos.
So example photos of maybe acouple of your videos. It might
have some kind of it's more alittle more pretty and graphic,
(20:14):
like a flyer versus a resume, which is just really words and a
list of your your job as in yourprevious jobs.
Okay? So think of it as mediakit equals a resume for your
social media highlights. Andthat is where you can put your
stats, your analytics, how manypeople are following you, and
you put all the information onthere so that when you send that
(20:35):
to a brand, they can evaluate isdoes this person have the type
of following? You might wannaput, you know, the demographic,
like, if you mostly have, youknow, women over a certain age
as your demographic, you wannaput that on there because these
brands wanna know who is youraudience and who is your loyal
audience that they're gonna beable to get in front of, and
they wanna make sure it's a it'sthe right fit for their
(20:56):
business. Okay.
So that's a wrap for today. I'vehad a week. I'll just get a
little a few personal things onthe back end of the podcast I'll
throw out to you. I was inPortland, Maine shooting for a
supermarket up there calledHannaford Supermarkets. So much
fun.
A social media shoot. We hadsome really kind of we had some
(21:19):
fun talent that I got to direct, and I was able to bring in a
lighting kit with an actuallighting guy who brought a big
umbrella light. So we had somefun making very pretty phone
shot content for the brand, andI really had a good time. I
really I like doing thoseshoots. I have a good time with
(21:39):
the people that I'm workingwith, seeing the local flair,
getting a sense of, the type ofcontent they're looking for,
shooting my own behind thescenes.
I really do enjoy it. And I havea few more of these coming up,
so I'm excited. And I'll betalking about them as they book,
as they firm up. Right now, twoof them are pending. But I do
have my last call for you beforethe April 5, actually, is the,
(22:04):
entrepreneur weekend in Jamaicabecause they're gonna be closing
the sign up.
There's also an online version,so you can click and you can
book just the online. So if youcan't if you don't wanna spend
the money to travel or you don'thave the ability to travel at
that time, but you wanna attendall of the things in the
conference, there is an onlineversion of it. So maybe you
(22:26):
wanna do that if you wanna learnabout, how to make sales and do
better with your digitalpromotions. There's some really
great speakers that I am I amjoining at this conference. So I
encourage you to take a look atit by just pressing on the link.
And now I have Jonathan callingme, so I told him that he can
call me right at this time, andhe's like clockwork. If I give
(22:47):
him a time, he's calling meright on that minute. So I'm
gonna sign off on the podcast, and I will see you next week.
Have a good one. Thanks forlistening.
I really appreciate you.
