Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to another
thrilling episode of this Sugar
Show, and today we're divingdeep into a topic that's really
close to my heart what to lookfor in quality body sugaring
education and how to findyourself a really good trainer.
Whether you are a newbie that'seager to embark on your sugar
journey, or you're a season proaiming to take your skills to
(00:23):
new heights, this episode is foryou.
It is packed with valuableinsights to guide you towards
excellence.
So let's jump right in to thesugary goodness.
Welcome to this Sugar Show.
I'm Shannon O'Brien, bodysugaring expert and licensed
esthetician, who's taken my ownskincare business from zero to
multiple six figures and hashelped over 3,000 students learn
(00:47):
how to do the same.
Now let me tell you it wasn'tall that long ago that I lacked
the time, budget and knowledgeneeded to grow my small business
as a body sugaring pro.
If we were to press rewind, you'd see the many failed
attempts and lessons learnedthat have helped me build the
profitable business that I havetoday, one that runs on its own
and gives me the lifestyle andfreedom that I only used to
(01:09):
dream of.
I created the Sugar Show tohand you my secrets and give you
the simple, step-by-stepstrategies to help you do the
same.
So if you're a cosmetologist oresthetician or wax professional
who's looking to fill yourbooks, make more money in your
business and enjoy greaterbalance between your work and
(01:29):
home life, you are in the rightplace.
Let's dive in.
Okay, so, when it comes tochoosing the perfect body
sugaring certification program, there's really a few things that
(01:52):
you need to consider, becausenot all programs are created
equal.
Gosh, when we started this in2014, we started as iSugar
University and it was we werethe only online sugar
certification course andeveryone said, oh, you can't
teach sugar online.
And nine years later, we haveproved them wrong and now lots
(02:14):
of people have followed the path.
So really, it's about how tofind the right program for you,
and I want to go over a fewthings about that.
So, first of all, there is adifference I want to be very
clear between completion andcertification, so I want you to
hear this really closely.
(02:34):
So, if you complete a courseonline we're talking about
online and you have just watchedthe course to the end and you
completed the modules, youwatched it and it just shows
that you've watched all thevideos and you get an automatic
certificate at the end.
That is not certification.
(02:56):
A certificate of completionmeans you just completed the
class.
It is a paper of finishingcertificate of completion, okay,
so, as those of you know thathave been doing this a really
long time, it is critical to getgood education.
Proper technique, understanding,theory, understanding hair
(03:18):
growth is critical to yoursuccess, right?
So you need to make sure thatyou find a program that actually
certifies you, and what thatmeans is they have taught you
the skills and witnessed thedemonstration of those acquired
skills.
Okay, so for a basiccertification program, you
should be able to demonstratethe mold inflict on at minimum a
(03:46):
large body part and then usingyour one finger, say on a brow,
to get into tight spaces.
Now, this does not mean you area master sugar pro, but you
should be able to mold and flickthat pays safely on a model
client before you receive thiscertificate.
So the certification will onlyvalidate your skills but also
(04:12):
help you stand out in thecompetitive job market.
So if you are someone who'sshown and demonstrated your
skills to an instructor and thatperson says, yep, you're ready
to continue training and move on, then that is when you get a
certification.
And please, please, please, donot skimp on this, because
really, it's about making surethat you have the skills before
(04:35):
you go into that treatment room.
We want to make sure that youunderstand theory, that you
understand the technique and whywe sugar the way we do.
So, no matter what company yougo through, make sure that that
program is comprehensive andlet's talk about that.
So a good quality online bodysugar certification education
(04:57):
should offer a comprehensivecurriculum that covers all
aspects of the technique.
So, again, I want you to belearning theory, history, hair
growth, contraindications and Iwant you to have practical
training where they're showingyou from different angles the
way you hold your hand, becausewe all know it is so critical to
(05:19):
have the proper technique oryou can hurt a client.
You know we talk about all thetime like, oh, sugar doesn't
hurt anyone.
Well, it hurts people if you'redoing it wrong and it really
makes the client uncomfortable.
And I've heard so many studentswhen I go to schools and I'll
say, okay, raise your hand ifyou have been sugared, and the
students will raise their handOkay, raise your hand if you
(05:40):
like sugaring and half of themlower their hand because they
did not have a good experience, because the technique was wrong
and it was someone who justtried to learn on YouTube or
learn with a program, that wasjust a couple of videos and they
felt like they got certified.
So do yourself a favor and yourclients a favor and get a
proper certification.
(06:01):
So when we talk about theory,y'all went to beauty school so
you know what theory is, butit's really to understand the
history of sugar and the sciencebehind the ingredients, like
how do they make it, why do theymake it, what is happening when
we're taking that hair out.
I want you to understand hairgrowth cycles and ingredient and
(06:24):
product knowledge.
Whatever company that youdecide to choose that is going
to provide you with sugar andpre and post products, make sure
you know the ingredients thatare in there.
Take a look, turn the bottlearound and make sure that those
ingredients are specific tosugaring and reducing an
(06:44):
inflammation, hydrating the skinand really providing the proper
pre and post experience foryour clients will make your job
a whole lot easier.
So learn about it in thebeginning.
Ensure as well, obviously, thatthey offer demonstrations, that
you have tutorials and that youhave practice sessions.
(07:05):
Don't just blow through thevideos and think that you're
just going to complete it and beable to start sugaring because
it really is.
We make it look easy it'sharder than it looks and make
sure that you are with a programthat is keeping in touch with
you along the way.
Okay, let me back up and explainmy experience with quote
(07:27):
certification so that you canunderstand where I'm coming from
and actually why we startedLove to Sugar in the first place
.
It started at iSugar Universityand then it just grew with the
podcast and the app and all ofthe things that we do to Love to
Sugar.
But before Love to Sugar, before iSugar University, I had
moved to this little town, folsom it's now a bigger town
(07:50):
and I knew no one and we weregoing through a recession.
If you have not heard thisalready, go back to my how Sugar
Saved my Life episode.
We'll put that in the shownotes.
But before all of that, I wentto get certified.
I'd gotten sugared by someone, absolutely loved it and said
okay, I need to set myself apart.
So there was no certificationhands-on classes in my area.
(08:14):
So the girl that sugared me wasan educator for one of the big
sugar companies a great nameSugar Company and she was a
master educator with them.
So I had to get the peopletogether to join the class.
So I got a couple of myEsthetician friends to join us
(08:36):
for this two-day hands-on classand what we did was we read the
manual and we didn't really talkabout it, we just read the
manual together and then shedemonstrated and I tried to do
it and by the time the day twowas over and we took a little
(08:57):
quiz and I'm really good atmemorizing, so I memorized all
the stuff.
I left there feeling like andthis was $1,000.
And I left there feeling like Iwouldn't want to sugar anyone
because I was terrible.
But I stood there with mylittle certification in hand and
was ever so proud of myselfthat technically, I could offer
(09:20):
this to clients now and I reallydid myself a disservice by not
doing more research.
And my gal, she just took off,she moved to Canada and I never
saw her again.
So here I was, trying to learn, trying to get to be the best I
could be, finally found someeducators and finally found
(09:41):
people that could help me and awhole lot of practice and a
whole lot of models that I feelso bad that I just oh, I was bad
in the beginning, but anyway, Ikind of created it myself and I
really thought to myself youknow what we have got to make
sure that in this industry, weare working together to provide
the best education, the mostsolid curriculum.
(10:02):
And now we have done for thelast nine years I can't believe
I'm saying that 2014,.
For the last nine years we havebeen gosh we're going on almost
10, but we have been teachingeveryone proper theory, proper
technique.
You have to send in your videosand there's no judgment, but we
have to be able to see thesesugar pros from all over the
(10:25):
world or students that want tobe sugar pros, and we help you
every step of the way.
And so if you are thinkingabout a certain online education
program that's not ours, that'sfine, but make sure that when
you vet that educator a littlebit and vet the program a little
bit to make sure that they dooffer a proper curriculum, that
(10:46):
they do check your techniquebefore you get that certificate,
because you don't want to walkout the door and not like me and
not be able to sugar, and Ifelt in the beginning like it
was a waste of my money.
I would have wasted the $1,000if I didn't keep at it.
So I want your educator to teachyou about proper sanitation.
I want your educator to teachyou about client consultation.
(11:07):
I want your educator to teachyou about safety protocols,
because we want to make surethat we're creating a safe
environment that's healthy andhappy for our clients, because
they're going to go tell theirfriends and we do not want them
to say that sugar is dirty or wehave bad experience, right, or
the person knew nothing aboutwhat they were doing and they
just slapped some sticky stuffon my parts, right?
(11:28):
We want to make sure that youare absolutely ready to go when
you get into that treatment room.
Okay.
Now the other thing is thatsugaring is just not a technique
, one and done type thing.
So, once you have yourcertification, look for a
program that also will teach youhow to market your body
(11:49):
sugaring services and help youto run a successful business.
To be honest, because there'slots of tips and tricks that you
might be using too much sugar, for example, you might be using
too much product pre and post,or just a little couple of
sprays or a little dollop willdo you.
If your company helps you getto that next level with their
(12:11):
products, then you are in theright hands.
So really do your homeworkfirst, okay.
The next thing I want to talkabout is interactive learning.
So, if your educator does notallow or do, follow up live
webinars, discussion forums, maybe virtual training where,
(12:33):
even if you have like flown to adifferent city to learn sugar
from this master educator, arethey still available for you
when you're really just in a jam?
Do you have a tribe of sugarprofessionals that you can call
them and say what do you do whenX happens?
Don't put yourself on an island.
Learn from the best company youpossibly can and get a demand
(12:58):
follow up right, because you canhave in person classes all you
like, which is awesome, thetraditional hands on class,
which you absolutely should do.
But nowadays, it's verypossible for your educator to
continue communicating with youand everything can be done
online, okay, as you know.
So look for programs that offerthat.
Make sure that the program thatyou're looking for hands on
(13:22):
online whatever is flexible andreally aligns with your schedule
, so that you're not having towait three months to get another
class in or you're not havingto wait to ask your questions.
Make sure that they offermobile friendly options and that
you have the ability to pull itup on your smartphone and
(13:43):
remind yourself quick what to dowith that pregnant client or
what to do with those eyebrows.
Alright, the next thing isprobably the one that people
struggle with a little bit, which is cost, and while cost is
an important factor, it shouldnot be the sole determinant of
your choice.
Consider the overall value thatyou're getting from that
(14:06):
program.
Do you need to spend a couplethousand dollars to learn how to
sugar?
Absolutely not.
Do you know?
Does a free online tutorialhelp you?
Absolutely not.
Should you pay 50 bucks to justwatch a video and then pay more
and more and more and more downthe line?
No, it should be acomprehensive program that
(14:28):
really provides qualitycurriculum that can lead to
better skills, which ultimatelylead to higher earning potential
.
Right, so we're talking longgame, not short game, all right.
So the last but not least thingI will say is check reviews,
check testimonials, payattention to what people are
(14:50):
saying before you make thatfinal decision.
You know, do some research byreading reviews and see what
previous students are saying.
Their experiences will providevaluable insights into a
program's quality andeffectiveness and really,
support is key, not only fromthe company that you go to, but
(15:11):
from their educator as well.
So take a look at reviews andtestimonials.
Inside our Facebook community, people are always giving
positive compliments todifferent educators.
Take advantage of that.
We're always about positivityin that community.
So you're not going to see meallow people really bashing on
an educator.
But if you're not hearing a lotabout an educator and how much
(15:32):
success people have experiencedwith that person, it's probably
likely that there's not a lot ofgreat things to say.
Or maybe that person is newbecause y'all we make it look
really easy.
And even if you've beensugaring a long time and you're
trying to really get a moreadvanced technique like one of
our girls just learned Manzilianshe's been sugaring for a
(15:52):
little bit and she wanted tolearn about how to do outside
parts and so if she didn't havethat video to watch and get her
prepped, she wouldn't be readyto do that service and would
really do a disservice to theshop, the reputation of sugar
and to the client mostimportantly.
So make sure that you arereally vetting, reading reviews,
(16:15):
reading testimonials.
If they have a brick and mortarshop, make sure that the brick
and mortar shop is getting greatreviews.
Look and see the cleanliness oftheir space and the depth of the
education that you're getting, because nowadays I mean back in
the day, like I said we were thefirst to do it there wasn't
many others that did.
There was a lot of hands-oneducators, but there wasn't a
(16:37):
lot of people that were doingonline.
And if we are not demandingthat those educators are high
standard as well, just aboutanybody can video themselves
sugaring and charge money andtake your money from you.
So please, please, please, becareful and if you have any
(16:57):
questions about an educator or adifferent company, you can
always reach out to us via DM oremail and we will help you
select a really good educatorfor you and it could be with
another company, which is great, especially if they're in your
area.
So we highly recommend that youfind someone that's close by so
that you can have them at yourfingertips.
So really, it's about Makingsure that not only you find a
(17:24):
company that is very strong, butyou seek out an educator that
is strong.
So there have been over theyears I absolutely love the
professional sugar supplycompanies and, to be honest,
over the years they've made somepoor choices on who they've
hired and those folks don't workfor them anymore.
So if your educator is jumpingfrom company to company and your
(17:45):
company is probably a reason Ifyour educator is not associated
with a company.
There's probably a reason Ifyour company is not really
promoting this educator orthey're brand spanking new.
Pay attention to the reviews.
Okay, prioritize those withextensive industry experience
(18:09):
and hands-on experience, so notjust somebody that's been an
esthetician for a year or two.
They learned how to sugar, theyfeel like they're pretty good
at it and they want to make acouple of bucks right.
You want to make sure that it'ssomebody that has ownership
experience, that has experienceas an employee, that has really
kind of built their business onsugar, because those are going
to be the people that are yourmentors and help inspire you.
(18:32):
So they might be really good atbody sugaring, but are they
good educators?
Because being able to sugar isone thing very amazing skill to
perfect, right and if someone isa really good body sugar pro,
awesome for them.
Their clients will be happy.
But if that person cannotcommunicate and be able to
(18:56):
enunciate and articulate thecourse that you need, that's
going to take you to the nextlevel.
You've just wasted your money.
Okay, so do a littleinvestigating and really I like
that they have a website If youcan go get sugared by that
instructor.
If they're too far away, likesome people, I would love to
(19:18):
have sugar in here.
In fact, we're expanding ourshop in here so that we're going
to be doing some hands-onclasses, because so many people
have asked to work with myselfand my other educators.
So come get sugared by them.
If you are near Sacramento, come get sugared by me.
If you're near one of the othersugar professional companies
and like if you're in WalnutCreek, go get sugared by Sweet
(19:40):
and True.
If you're in SouthernCalifornia, run at Myrat.
Like, go get sugared by Tapiraon the East Coast, you know,
have Mabel sugar you or one ofher staff so that you can see
the professionalism that isthere, experience their touch
and I promise you it will be nobrainer to, whatever the cost is
(20:01):
, to make sure that you get theright education.
Okay, again, teaching is notjust doing.
I have a teaching credentialfrom Chickas State University
and I learned about how to buildcurriculum.
This is not just okay, everyoneget around that table and you
(20:23):
know I'm going to.
I'm going to show you what I doand hopefully you can get it
when you are stuck and you don'tunderstand that educator needs
to be able to think quickly intheir mind.
Which which way that you learn.
Do you learn by hands and bydoing?
Do you learn by hearing?
(20:44):
Do you learn by reading?
Do you learn just by sight?
Because some people only canlearn if they put their hands on
it.
For some reason, their brainjust doesn't click with their
hand and if your educator can'tthink of different ways to teach
, you might completely miss thewhole lesson, like I did in my
training.
So make sure that your educatorscan break down complex concepts
(21:07):
If they are online, they willbe able to do that as well and
that they can provide step bystep instructions to really help
you when you're frustrated.
They should possess excellentcommunication skills, a whole
lot of patience and, like I said, the ability to kind of adapt
their teaching styles.
Check out their social mediaand see if there's examples of
(21:28):
them educating, see how manypeople they've educated and
really take a look at and digdeep into what type of an
educator they are and whether ornot they can communicate that
to you.
So if you if a good idea is tolook at their social media and
see their hand movements, see, take a look at the back of the
(21:53):
room?
Is their room a mess?
Is their product and powdereverywhere?
Do they?
Do they use a technique that'smore wiping?
Are they using a lot of product?
And that's really just to makeit look pretty.
Really, truly, it's whether ornot those people can demonstrate
(22:14):
their skills to you will bereally helpful along the way.
So the other thing that I reallylike to see in an educator is
someone who is accessible.
Someone is around for questionsand guidance and support, both
during your training and afteryour training.
So, for example, my educatorwas very sweet.
(22:35):
Never heard from her again.
She was very kind but didn'treally care that I couldn't
sugar when I left.
She was just there to make themoney and again $1,000 that I
paid for basic certification.
They should encourage that youcommunicate with them and they
(22:55):
should be totally open toproviding feedback for your
skills.
And if they are not and you'recoming up with kind of some
blockades on that look forsomebody else.
Look for someone who's going toreally take the job as mentor
seriously and probably even hasmore advanced trainings to offer
you as well down the line.
So if they have a Brazilianclass, if they have a
(23:20):
troubleshooting class, myexperience with hands-on
educators is that, if it's twodays and done, you're not going
to be able to be a great sugarpro without a lot more education
.
So start from the beginningwith a comprehensive program and
I promise you, even if it's acouple of bucks more than the
other guy, it's worth everysingle penny because you will
(23:44):
just get to the next level everso much faster.
Okay, next one is an ethical andclient-centered approach.
What does that mean?
Well, make sure that youreducator is demonstrating
ethical practices and theyshould emphasize, for example,
(24:06):
the importance of client safety,of hygiene, the comfort of
those who are receiving theservices.
So, for example, if you aresugaring with an educator and
they're working with you andthere is sugar everywhere and it
is not clean and they're notcleaning those implements in
between services, guaranteedthey're not doing that with
(24:27):
their clients and they're notteaching you proper technique.
Make sure that the way that youlearn from the beginning is
from someone who values theprinciples in your treatment
room.
So if it's someone who's justlike, yeah, I know how to sugar,
you know, give me 500 bucks andI'll teach you how.
(24:47):
That is not what you want.
You want someone who has aclean treatment room, who
understands client protocols, who understands what to do with
different types of skin, isalways concerned about the
client's safety and comfortfirst and can in turn bring that
to you.
And if they cannot answer thosequestions or they really don't
(25:09):
talk about it when you talk tothem and you get to know them at
first, pick someone else, okay.
The other thing is there's alot of people that have been
sugaring for a really long timeand they have not taken their
business to the next level.
They've kind of stuck in a rut.
I would like to throw out therethat the best educators stay up
(25:34):
to date with the latest trendsand techniques and products.
Seek educators that arecommitted to their own
professional development and canintroduce you to innovative
practices that keep youcompetitive in the field.
For example, if you are someonewho's a really good sugar pro
but you do not have any sort ofknowledge on oncology aesthetics
(25:57):
, I highly recommend that youfind a quality program and if
you need to know one, let meknow and we'll get you set up.
If you are someone who hasalways kind of used the same
sugar and really doesn't deviateand doesn't realize that
there's amazing new productsthat have come on the market
that can really benefit yourclients.
You're not someone who's goingto take my business or my
(26:21):
students business to the nextlevel.
You really want to look forsomebody who's done their
homework and they are a studentas well.
I can't tell you how many timesI go in to learn how, to teach
someone how to sugar, and I'mlike I never thought of that.
Look at that tool or look atthat technique and really it
makes me a better sugar pro, itmakes me a better esthetician
(26:44):
and it definitely reflects in mypay at the end of the weeks and
months and years.
So investing in your educationand them investing in their
education is critical.
So, taking your final decision,do some research on your
educators reputation.
I have seen a few differenteducators that get on social
(27:06):
media and they're cussing orthey are showing you their
personal life, which is maybe alittle bit more colorful than it
is what they're hanging theirhat on.
(27:31):
And if you want to make sureyou dive a little bit deeper and
find someone who really justaligns with you, you'll have a
much better experience.
So you're going to read thereviews, read any testimonials
and ask your peers.
You know, pull someone asideand say hey, I'm really looking
for a great educator.
(27:51):
You know who did you learn from?
Because a well regardededucator with a history of
satisfied students is a strongindicator of quality.
That's a lot, I know, and I'msure your head's spinning a
little bit.
If you're new, if you are anadvanced sugar pro and you're
(28:12):
looking for that person at thenext level, these all apply to
you.
This is not just certification, but really selecting the right
body sugaring educator is acrucial step in your journey to
become a skilled and successfulprofessional in the beauty
industry.
This is not just in sugar, thisis also in skincare as well.
(28:33):
So look for educators, like Isaid, who possess industry
expertise, have relevantcertifications, see how long
they have been certified.
Certifying people haveeffective teaching skills and a
commitment to ethical practices, and by choosing a quality
educator, you will not onlyenhance your own skills, but
(28:56):
you'll also contribute to theoverall standard of excellence
within the body sugar profession.
We need you to be amazing sothat the reputation of sugaring
continues as a really great one.
So invest in your educationwisely and you'll be well
prepared to provide top notsugaring services to your
clients.
(29:18):
So here we have folks.
If you are someone who's reallyready to get started.
We have all kinds of resourcesfor you.
There is just a treasure troveof information and advice just
that we are available for insidethe community, inside the sugar
tribe, inside our app.

(29:39):
for you.
So are our educators, and yourpeers are there for you as well,
to really empower you in thequest for the best education
program and really for the besttrainer in the body sugar
universe.
I hope that you felt inspiredand well equipped to take your
sugaring skills to the nextlevel, and the right education
(30:01):
and training are the sweet pathto success in this profession.
So until next time, stay sweet, keep sugaring and be fantastic.
