(00:37):
Hello everyone, Welcome back to The Victim's Voice.
I am your host, Laura B. This week we will conclude the
case of Lindsay Clancy. Last week we discussed what
happened on the night of January24th, 2023, some of the things
Lindsay had been going through prior to that night, and the
devastation that her husband wasfacing last week.
(00:58):
Well, actually two weeks ago, weleft off with Lindsay in the
hospital. She was not awake yet, so no one
had gotten a chance to talk to her at that point, even though
the DA had already decided that she was going to be charged for
the murder of her children. Then on Thursday, January 27th,
Lindsay opened her eyes, but shecouldn't speak.
She was also paralyzed from the belly button down because of a
(01:21):
spinal transaction. The doctor said she may recover
some, but would most likely not recover fully.
Some people thought that when she woke up she would realize
what she had done and the reality of her actions would be
so unbearable and overwhelming that criminal charges may not be
the right thing to do. Because if she had been in a
(01:41):
state of psychosis when she did this, then once she realized
what she did, that would be punishment enough.
However, what Lindsay did when she woke up in that hospital bed
shocked everyone and made some of the people who were
supporting Lindsay second guessed themselves.
After Lindsay regained consciousness, she was handed a
whiteboard. She took the marker and slowly
(02:02):
wrote 5 words on it. Those words were Do I need a
lawyer? This is one of the things that
makes me wonder if this was something she planned.
She obviously knew what she had done and knew it was wrong.
Otherwise why would she ask if she needs a lawyer?
If she was in a state of psychosis like a lot of people
thought she had been, then she most likely wouldn't have
(02:25):
remembered what she had done. And if she did remember she
would have been crushed at what she had done to her children
that she loved so much. But neither of those things are
what happened. Lindsay didn't seem upset when
she asked if she needed a lawyer.
She seemed the opposite, eerily calm.
By the end of January, Lindsay had in fact obtained counsel and
was working on her defense. Her attorney, Kevin Redington,
(02:49):
said that Lindsay had been the subject of, quote UN quote, a
horrific medication overdose. He stated that she had been
prescribed 13 different medications between October of
2022 and January of 2023. He told Boston 10 quote, she
continued to see the doctor. She continued to complain about
(03:10):
the effects the medication was having on her.
These are the medications that Lindsay was prescribed during
that time period. Ambien, which is a sleeping aid.
Klonopin, which is for anxiety or can help you sleep.
Valium, the same Prozac, which is antidepressant.
Lamerotrigine, which I'm not sure what that is.
(03:32):
Ativan, which is also for anxiety or to help you sleep.
Remron, Zoloft, another antidepressant.
Seroquel, which helps you sleep.Trazodone helps you sleep.
Hydroxyzine, Amitriptyline, Buspar, which are
antidepressants. Regen stated.
(03:53):
Quote This family was on the road to hell and unfortunately
is not coming back. End Quote.
Lindsay and Patrick had gone to the doctor on more than one
occasion asking for help and telling them that either the
medications weren't working or the side effects were
unbearable. Just the week before the
incident happened, Patrick had told the doctor that he was
(04:14):
turning Lindsay into a quote UN quote zombie, but instead of
adjusting doses, they would justadd on more medications to try
to counteract the effects of theother medications.
On February 3rd of 2023, ten days after Lindsay had killed
her kids, a hearing was held viaZoom.
Lindsay's attorney asked to havea forensic psychologist evaluate
(04:36):
her for any evidence of a postpartum mood disorder.
The assistant DA requested a third person to be in the room
during the evaluation, but the judge denied that request and
said that it could be done in private.
During that hearing, the judge also made the ruling that
Lindsay was allowed to have her parents call her, but she was
not allowed to make any outgoingphone calls.
(05:00):
On February 7th of 2023, LindsayClancy was arraigned.
Even though it was more like a preliminary hearing, there were
details that came out that made people wonder if this was due to
a mental illness or if this was actually planned.
That is when the world started to become divided on how they
felt about Lindsay and her actions.
The first thing that the Assistant District Attorney did
(05:23):
during the arraignment was go over the day of the incident and
here's what we learned. On the morning of January 24th,
2023, Lindsay took her five yearold daughter, Cora to a doctor's
appointment. The receptionist, the nurses,
and the doctor all reported thatthere was no indication at all
that anything was wrong. Later that morning, she took
(05:44):
five year old Cora and three-year old Dawson outside
and played in the snow and builta snowman.
She sent pictures of this to Patrick and her mother, who both
said they had texted her back and talked for a bit and
everything seemed normal. At 4 O 2:00 PM, Lindsay used her
phone and searched for kids Miralax.
This is when things got weird. At 4:13 PM, eleven minutes after
(06:07):
searching for the kids Miralax, Lindsay searched for take out.
3V3V is a restaurant that her and Patrick had eaten at many
times, so she knew exactly whereit was and how to get there.
Yet she used Apple Maps to find out exactly how long it would
take to get to the restaurant from their house.
The whole round trip came out tojust a little under 30 minutes.
(06:31):
At 4:47 PM, Lindsay got on the CVS website to get their number,
then called the store to see if they had the kids Miralax that
she had been looking for online. The manager said that they
didn't have that brand, but theyhad some medications that were
similar and told her what they were.
The manager later stated that Lindsay hadn't sounded under the
influence of anything, that she didn't slur her words or sound
(06:53):
drowsy at all. He said it was just a normal
conversation. At 4:53 PM, Lindsay texted
Patrick, who was downstairs working in his basement office.
Her text read. Quote any chance you want to do
take out from three? VI didn't cook anything.
It's been a long day. End Quote.
(07:14):
The assistant District Attorney said this was unusual for the
Clancy's. When they got take out they
normally went somewhere closer to the house, however it was
only a 12 minute drive and it was somewhere they had been
before. Patrick said yes to Lindsay's
text about doing take out so shetold him to look at the menu.
At 5 O 6:00 PM, Patrick texted Lindsay back and asked her what
(07:36):
she was going to get. She texted him and that she was
going to get the Mediterranean Power Bowl.
Patrick told her he would take the scallop and pork belly
risotto. A few minutes later, at 5:10 PM,
Lindsay called 3V and placed a take out order.
The Hostess that took the order said that Lindsay sounded fine
and that there was nothing unusual about the call.
(07:58):
Around 5 minutes after Lindsay placed the order at 5:15 PM,
Patrick left the house to go pick up the food.
Not long after he left, Lindsay texted him asking him to go by
CVS and pick up some Pedialyte liquid stool softener for Cora.
At 5:32 PM, Patrick just caught on surveillance cameras walking
(08:18):
into CVS. He walked directly to the
children's medication aisle, andwithin one minute of being
there, he called Lindsay. She didn't answer the phone when
he called, but she did call him back a minute later.
The call only lasted 14 seconds.Lindsay told him exactly what he
needed to get, then got off the phone.
Patrick stated later that duringthat call, Lindsay sounded
(08:40):
distracted, like she was in the middle of something and her mind
was somewhere else, but was otherwise calm and sounded
normal. Patrick paid for the medicine
and left CVS at 5:54 PM. He arrived at 3V to pick up
their dinner. At six O 9:00 PM, Patrick
returned home to the silent house.
(09:00):
He called Lindsay's phone to seewhere everyone was.
That's when he went upstairs to the master bedroom to find the
door locked. Once he got inside the room, he
saw the blood under the mirror and Lindsay on the ground under
their second story window. While Patrick was still on the
phone with 911, he asked Lindsay, who was conscious at
that time, where the kids were. That's when she told him that
(09:22):
they were in the basement. He stayed with his injured wife
until help arrived, but when theEMT's got there, he left him to
deal with Lindsay while he ran off to find his kids.
We've already talked about what he found when he entered the
basement. Patrick began to take the
exercise bands off of the kids necks as he screamed for help.
When officers got to the basement, all Patrick could do
(09:43):
is scream. She killed the kids.
Throughout the search of the house, officers found journals
and notes on Lindsay's phone detailing her life, her
children's lives, her mental state and what medications she
was taking. Her writing was clear, precise
and articulate. It never indicated that she was
suffering from hallucinations ordelusions, according to the
(10:04):
prosecutor. In last week's episode, we
discussed that Lindsay had voluntarily checked herself into
a mental health hospital from January 1st until the 5th.
After her stay in the facility, there was no more writing about
harming herself or the kids. In her journal, Patrick told
detectives that she seemed to bedoing better, or so he thought.
(10:25):
He said she had started socializing with her friends
again, and she and Patrick wouldhave date nights and go to
restaurants or museums. She had even stayed at home
alone with the children several times, which for a while,
Patrick wouldn't allow her to do.
Everything seemed to be going well and their lives seemed to
be back on track. 10 Boston alsolearned that two nights before
the crime, Patrick and Lindsay had been at another couple's
(10:47):
home for dinner, and those friends told investigators that
Lindsay seemed fairly normal, mostly quiet on her phone and
keeping to herself. The weekend prior to the
incident, Lindsay's parents cameto see her and the grandkids.
They said everything seemed fineand there was nothing out of the
ordinary that they remembered seeing or hearing in regards to
Lindsay's behavior. On the 22nd, Lindsay texted her
(11:10):
mom asking how their ride home was.
During the conversation, Lindsay's mom told her it was
nice to see her doing better. But on January 23rd, the day
before this all happened, Lindsay made a note on her phone
that she had a touch of postpartum anxiety about
returning to work and that her psychiatrist prescribed her
medication to help her cope. The District Attorney made a
(11:32):
point that there was no one who had contact with Lindsay in the
days leading up to the incident that said she seemed off or was
zombie like. Even the day of the incident she
was said to have seemed normal and Patrick had said it had been
one of her best days lately and that she was smiling and happy
all day. That leaves you to wonder
though, could she have been in such a good mood because she
(11:53):
knew what she was about to do and she felt some sort of relief
that her responsibility as a mother would soon be over.
Lindsay had kept a detailed log of her medications and any
problems that she had had with them.
When she had any issues she would let her doctor know and
they would stop the meds or weanher off and try something new.
They were trying to see which ones worked for her and which
(12:15):
ones did not, but it was a trialand error kind of situation.
I've been through this mess myself with my son and his ADHD
and trying to find a medication to work for him.
Different meds work for different people.
What works for one may not work for the next.
So sometimes it does take a while to find one or a
combination that works and to get everything balanced out.
(12:37):
All of her notes were precise and detailed, with no sign of
anything being off. The assistant District Attorney
cited Patrick when she told the court that Lindsay was never on
more than four or five medications at a time.
When the incident happened, she was only on three medications.
Redding stated that Lindsay knewhow to keep a medication log
because she was a nurse and thatbecause she knew how to take
(12:59):
notes in a journal, it doesn't mean she wasn't suffering.
The assistant District Attorney also stated during the
arraignment that on February 5th, the psychiatrist hired by
the defense allowed Lindsay to use their personal cell phone to
call Patrick. The judge had said that Lindsay
could not could receive a call from her parents but that she
could not make any outgoing calls and I'm sure the phone
(13:22):
that she was receiving calls from her parents on was most
likely recording the conversation.
The psychiatrist who decided to do whatever he wanted and not
listen to the judge's orders should be held accountable for
his actions. The first call Lindsay made to
Patrick was unanswered, but she left a voicemail telling him she
loved him. The very next day on February
(13:45):
6th, said that the psychiatrist let Lindsay use their phone
again to call Patrick. This time he answered.
He stated that Lindsay told him she killed the kids because
after he left that night, she heard a voice and had a moment
of psychosis. Patrick asked her what voice she
had heard and she said it was a man's voice that told her to
kill herself and the kids because it was her last chance.
(14:09):
Patrick told authorities that Lindsay had never heard voices
before that he knew of and had never used the word psychosis
with him before either. So the first time she used the
word psychosis, she was with thepsychiatrist that was hired by
her defense team while she used the psychiatrist's personal cell
phone. ADA then read a note that
(14:30):
Lindsay had put in her phone on October 25th of 2022, three
months before the incident. Here is what she wrote.
Quote. I think I kind of resent my
other children because they prevent me from treating Callen
like my first baby and I know that's not fair to them.
I know that I was feeling so depressed last evening when Cora
(14:51):
and Dawson came home from school.
I know it run runs off on them. So we had a pretty rough
evening. I want to feel love and
connection with all of my kids. End Quote.
She also wrote that she eventually wanted to have more
kids. At the end of her testimony, the
ADA said that Lindsay didn't take advantage of the situation
(15:12):
at night when Patrick left the house to pick up their dinner
and medication. She said that Lindsay created
the situation using Apple Maps to make sure she had enough time
to carry out her plan. The defense also was able to go
before the judge at the hearing and stated that women with
postpartum health concerns aren't taken seriously or given
(15:33):
the help they need. But Lindsay did seek help and
was receiving treatment and had been admitted to a psychiatric
facility and then was doing a 5 day a week postpartum depression
clinic. She also had a lot of support
from her family. Lindsay's probable cause hearing
had been scheduled for May of 2023, but it was postponed to
July 25th since in May she was moved from the regular hospital
(15:57):
to Tewksbury State Hospital where she would get extended
mental health treatment. In September of 2023, Lindsay's
case went before a grand jury and she was indicted on all
counts. There was also another
arraignment hearing in October of 2023 where Lindsay pled not
guilty to all charges. During this hearing, we learned
(16:19):
some new details that doesn't look good for Lindsay's defense.
Lindsay was not present for thishearing via Zoom as a court
clinician interviewed Clancy prior to the hearing and stated
that Clancy had little to no emotion or expression and that
she experienced ongoing daily thoughts of suicide.
It was recommended that Lindsay received further
(16:41):
hospitalization. Lindsay's blood was drawn for
testing While in the hospital, it was discovered that the
levels of some of the medications she was on were on
the low end of expected levels. Two other medications showed
peak level at the time, which prosecutors say is an indication
that they were taken after the killings.
(17:04):
Prosecutors also talked about Lindsay's wounds, stating that
they were superficial and not life threatening.
They had stopped bleeding altogether by the time Patrick
had gotten back the evening of the incident.
It was also discovered that she had hung onto the window ledge
before losing her grip or letting go.
It's unknown which one happened. So was she really trying to kill
(17:26):
herself if she was holding on tothe ledge?
That makes me think that maybe she wanted it to just look like
she had tried to kill herself, when in fact she was trying to
get as low to the ground as she could before letting go so that
she didn't get hurt that badly. If you were really trying to
commit suicide, wouldn't you just jump?
I don't think you would try to lower yourself down, which is
what it looks like she might have been trying to do.
(17:50):
Another piece of evidence that was discovered is probably the
most damning of all. Lindsay had searched ways to
kill and can you treat a psychopath online before the
killing of her children. This pretty much speaks for
itself, the fact that she was having these messed up thoughts
for some time. What I don't understand is if
(18:10):
she really didn't plan it, but she knew she was having these
thoughts, why didn't she go somewhere, do anything she had
to do to remove herself from being around her kids so that
she didn't hurt them? On December 15th of 2023,
Lindsay had another court hearing.
This hearing had to do strictly with document sharing and
timeline planning for evidence discovery.
(18:33):
Clancy's appearance at Plymouth County Superior Court in
Plymouth at the hearing would have had to have been from the
Zoom Internet video conferencingservice because she's still
being held without bail and on an extended stay at Tewksbury
Hospital. The logistics of hearings from
the hospital are difficult as the privacy of other patients
(18:55):
there is paramount, as discussedat the October hearing.
And so Clancy's attorney, Kevin Reddington waived her appearance
in court on December 15th of 2023, and at that time waived
her appearance for the next court date on January 17th of
2024. On January 17th at 9:00 AM at
the other Plymouth Superior Court location in Brockton,
(19:17):
Lindsay's legal team was in court again.
At this hearing, a motion for a DNA bucal swab was allowed,
which is when they scraped the cheek lining inside your mouth
being it's a good source for DNA.
Another court date was scheduledthen for discovery motions.
That date was March 26th of 2024.
(19:38):
Lindsay also waived her rights to be at that court date and
that's the last update that there was.
I will keep you all updated as new updates come in on this
case. No one will ever know the entire
truth of what was going through Lindsay's mind that night except
for her, and she's going to haveto live with that the rest of
her life. All I can say is I want to end
(20:00):
this by reminding every one of the three children who had their
lives taken away so tragically. Cora, Dawson and Khaled, they
are what matters in all of this.Jump on over to the Victim's
Voice Facebook page to see photos from this case and come
back next week where we will discuss a new case.
(20:20):
Until then, peace out.
