I've I finally gotten thegroove recently?
There's enough stuff to talkabout and people to talk to a
lot of the episodes that Iwanted to do earlier this year
spin-off.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Uh, the alien show, yeah, exactly yeah, the the ice
age, the fifth, uh, fifth insertin the ice age franchise, I
think think, eric, before youcame out, I told him it would
have been really hilarious if hecame in and he was just on a
bike, but on the Riverside app,but like while biking.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
I wouldn't expect anything less, if I'm being
completely honest with you.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah, so one time in the future, corey, you will have
to join us via again some trailin the middle of Florida.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
Oh, I'll do it.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
But another guest returning.
He was here on the Wait for itpodcast.
For what did I miss last year?
The leader of said short boxnation bought, and one half of
the amazing team at the GPUbought her.
Thank you so much for joiningus.
It's good to see you.
Like you said, we tried to makethis happen last month, but we

tonight.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Hey yo check it out, motherfucker, I'm Tupac, thank
you.
Thank you, phil, for thatamazing intro.
It's a pleasure to not only beon the Wait For Podcast again,
but to also be counted among thefellow Weight Watchers, which I
learned today is what you callyour patrons, which I think is
the best name for a Patreoncommunity ever.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Yeah, and also a new perk, BJ Glizzy's coming pretty
soon.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
If you mail me a BJ Glizzy from BJ, you can keep it.
That's a perk that I think I'llskip on.
No, it's part of the.
Just take my money.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
It's part of the merch package now.
Sorry, I don't know what totell you.
It is yours, but, yeah, veryexcited to be hanging out with
everybody here this evening.
If this is the first timeyou're listening to this
particular podcast, well, youpicked a hell of an episode to
join, because this is prettycarefree and just meant to be a
whole lot of fun, which is whatwe are going to do here tonight.

(04:00):
But before we get into it,botter, I do want to give you
the opportunity because, I mean, eric and I have talked about it
here in the last few weeks.
In terms of podcast camp, itwas an incredible success.
The feedback that we havegotten from people that attended
was fantastic.
So, please, for anybody youknow, I just want to hear from
you, like, what's it been like, just kind of basking in the, you

(04:20):
know, the afterglow of podcastcamp, putting it all together
and, like, you know, how are youfeeling now and what have you
heard as far as feedback?

Speaker 3 (04:28):
I feel like I am just now relaxing after that event.
I mean the build up to theevent you're planning for, the.
I mean it was the first of itskind.
You know, the Jax podcast camp.
It was a brand new event thatwe threw and it will for sure be
a returning event.
Based on the feedback we got,the outpouring support, the

(04:50):
amount of people that showed up.
I mean it was very successful.
So happy that all of the hardwork that went on behind the
scenes paid off the day of andPhil, eric, I got to give you
guys huge props on helping outwith the event.
You guys host a panel, or wereyou a part of a panel?
Part of a panel, right?

Speaker 2 (05:06):
yes, part of one, part of a panel and you guys
hosted the q a, that's right,which I will absolutely admit.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Uh was a big reason why I decided to finally pull
the trigger and become a weightwatcher, because I was, because
I was like you know what I'malways talking about supporting
podcasters.
And what other podcasts shouldI support than you two that are
always working so goddamn hard?
I mean, look, you guys know aswell as I have.
There's been a lot ofpodcasters that have come out to
our events that you know aren'taround the next day or aren't

(05:35):
still podcasting now, and Ithink you guys are a testament
to I'm bright the year.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
You mean Corey?

Speaker 4 (05:42):
You mean like our friend Corey, who opted out of
the podcast camp?

Speaker 3 (05:47):
No, no, no, corey would have absolutely been there
had he still been in chat.
Hell, I mean, corey's actuallydriven from Tampa to, I think,
one of our last events.
So Corey is an exception.
He's a great guy.
Phil and Eric, you guys look, Iam so impressed by how long you
guys have, you know, kept thewait for a podcast going and
growing.

(06:07):
I like to me and blife, like tosay you guys are like our
number one example of like, hey, this is what you should do as
podcasters, you know so yeah, yeah, we're coming for that
folio award, that's right nolook, that's right little, do
you know we're just lurking inthe shadows.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
Have it, man.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
I don't go nearly as hard as campaigning for the best
of awards.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
We forget about it every year and then it's like
vote for your.
And then by that time we'relike, well, it's too late to
stuff the ballot box.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
They're like the last day is a week from now, and
you're like shit.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
We always forget about it.
It's a week from now.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
And you're like shit, we always forget about it.
I think I just got a littledisillusioned.
I was like, oh wait, I thinkLarry's Giant sub won one year.
And I was like, wait a minute, they're not even vetting this
shit, it's just you know.
Anyways, anyways, you guys aregreat in my eyes.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
So no award needed.
Well, you did give us awards, actually.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Actually, I'm going to need those awards back
because we need to recycle themFor the 2025 volunteer.
Hey look we don't make no moneyoff of Jack's podcast.
Wait for it.

Speaker 4 (07:11):
Podcast on it.
You can't give it.
Is this going to be like afantasy football?

Speaker 2 (07:19):
league where we hold a trophy for a year and you just
recycle that around.
What if I started picking at itLike this is a sticker.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Is this going to be?

Speaker 4 (07:28):
like the.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Stanley Cup, where that you just add.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
You just put 20, 25.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
Right.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
There is a reason why all of the events for Jack's
podcast United is free, allright, we struggle in here.
We got to make ends meet.
Oh, that dog even understands.
He's like you're right.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Brenda's dog even understands.
Even he feels he's like.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
You're right, butter's great brenda's home and
mabel is letting me know.
But uh, yeah, but again, podcast camp was great and I
can't wait for uh for next year, come back around.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
So if you missed it this year, uh, you know, like
phil, you want I'm sorry, philyou won't even have to wait for
another um event, because, intrue butter fashion, it's
already off to the next um wherewe're doing the Jack's Podathon
in December.
It'll be the third year thatwe're throwing this event.
We're hoping to make it biggerand better.
You guys know us.
We're always looking to improveour events.
So if you're listening rightnow and you're an aspiring or

(08:17):
even a veteran podcaster, that'sin the Northeast Florida area,
or if you don't mind driving tonortheast florida, jacksville
specifically uh, check outjack's podcasters, unitedcom.
That's where we, you know, uhpost our events.
We're doing another event ondecember.
I want to say it's december10th, it's like the second
wednesday in december, butjack's podathon it's coming this
year.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Be on the lookout there you go, cory, uh, so yeah,
yeah, well to to continuetalking up the jpu thing, yeah

Speaker 1 (08:47):
didn't, uh, didn't y'all have people from orlando?
Oh my god, yeah, yeah, uh allright.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
So jack's podcast cam .
I want to say we had a.
I wish I knew their name on thespot right now, but we had a uh
podcast duo, a wife and ahusband and wife duo drive from
Atlanta just for Jack's podcastgame and they drove back that
same night.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Which uh you know that's a crazy drive back to
them.
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
Uh, we've had folks from oh, we've got a Mr Nuke, Mr
Whiskey, uh, from, uh, Savannah.
He always drives down fromSavannah to attend the event, to
talk podcasting, which I thinkspeaks to the, you know,
podcasters.
Man, we love hanging out andtalking with our people.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
Yeah, speaks to the value of that networking and
that community.
So yeah, as it continues togrow.
So it's been fantastic.
But, eric, I think it is timefor us to for it to return.
If I recall correctly, obviously we didn't do it last
month it was just the two of usAt one point we did dice.
Do it last month, it was justthe two of us At one point we
did Dice because it wascompletely.
This episode was completelyhacked by our guests.

(09:48):
Oh yes.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
So we have to bring in the return of your favorite
part of the episode, one of thegreatest resources to us Brokey
podcast.
Gotta love it, gotta love it.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
I use this at what's the name?
Electric Dough the other day topick a pizza.
So I use this at what's thename Electric Dough the other
day to pick a pizza.
So.

Speaker 4 (10:07):
I use this website all the time.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Okay, oh my God, you are like an evangelist for this
website.
Yeah, absolutely no for sure.

Speaker 4 (10:13):
Now, wheels are our thing, and especially on this
episode.
So if you don't know the drill,I'm going to break it down
right now.
Botter Corey, I'm going tocount down Three, two, one, and
then all of us are going to tryit the same, say the same thing
at the same time spin that wheel.
So in that cadence three, two, one, spin that wheel.
The last time we did do it itdid go very well.

(10:37):
So I can only imagine I don'tknow, I've looked at Aaron.
I don't think so.
Aaron was the oh, maybe not.
No, has it ever gone?
Well, that's the real question.
One time, let's go for two.
We're going to count down Three, two, one, spin, spin, spin.
That was.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
There's always got to be one Win it's a win.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
There's always got to be one Win.
It's a win, there's always gotto be one, all right, we got
Corey up first.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
Straight off the bat.
Really exciting.

Speaker 2 (11:13):
What did we miss in August?

Speaker 1 (11:15):
Yeah, and July because it's a two-parter.
Oh shit.
They're connected, though, so Iknow that everyone here is an
avid listener of the short boxpodcast.

Speaker 4 (11:27):
Hey.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
I like that show.
Everyone who's listening is anavid listener.
But in the beginning of Junebought a release, an episode
interviewing IDW comic editorJake Williams to talk about the
Godzilla upcoming Godzillaseries of the Kaisei era, which
is an officially licensed canon.
I don't know what the wordcanon means to Toho, but sure

(11:51):
we'll just say that it'scanonical.
But at the very end of June andJuly and then beginning of
August we got issue one ofGodzilla and issue 1 of Godzilla
and Issue 1 of Godzilla Escapethe Dead Zone.
So first entries into this newera.
I don't know how many comicswe're getting total.

(12:11):
Actually I have the IDW comiclist for the rest of the year
and it looks like there's goingto be I think six of Godzilla,
maybe five of Dead Zone and Idon't know how many of Starship,
but at least two um.
So it's really cool, it'sexciting.
They're chunky, they're 32pages.

(12:32):
I think the average comic is 24or maybe fewer um.
So they're, they're thick, uh,they're, I think, five bucks
each, which is pretty good for a32 page comic.
I want to say there's no ads upuntil the very end, just kind
of letting you know what's tocome.
So it's a great start to a newera.
It's big Godzilla news.
It is fun to have something Ifyou are in a comic shop right

(12:57):
now.
We are living in an extremelystrange time Because today I
picked up VR Troopers and speedracer from the comic shop.

Speaker 3 (13:09):
Dude it's like it's like no property, no show.
No, uh, you know a franchisefrom your childhood and I'm
specifically talking to likefolks our age, right, like
nineties babies.
None of that shit is safe fromthe comics, uh, uh, it more than
likely.
I mean to cory's point.
There is a, a, a swat catscomic series that was announced.

(13:31):
There is a uh, what was that?
Cowboys of moo mesa.
You guys remember that show.

Speaker 1 (13:36):
I might have oh yeah, no, getting a comic series,
yeah it's insane the time we'reliving in yeah, you can go by
gotcha man right now they'redeep into that.
Yeah, it's wild, but theGodzilla stuff's really cool.
The artists are cool.
I got to meet one of the coverartists at Tampa Bay Comic Con.
He was directly across fromIvan, so it was like my third or

(13:59):
fourth time talking to Ivan.
I turn around and just happento see Godzilla covers behind me
.
It's like, oh shit, what's thisguy doing?
Um, yeah, so he was one of theseveral cover artists, but no,
it is.
I think that's one of thecoolest things.
It's something that's tangible, that you can go out and buy
right now.
Um, there are a couple ofthings I'll bring up later
that's less tangible, less timed, but, uh, right now is a good

(14:22):
time to you know, if you want toread something that's really
interesting, an interesting takeon the godzilla franchise, on
kaiju, because it isn't strictlygodzilla.
Um, go, go, grab the godzillanumber one and godzilla escape
the dead zone number one.
But I am most looking forwardto starship godzilla, because I

(14:44):
don't know what they're gonna doand I, I want that insanity in
my life very apropos topic forcaptain kaiju there yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
So for for the uneducated of us, me and eric,
what could?
What is the rundown of godzillaescape the dead zone?
Because I did look it up andit's something that I'm not
super familiar with.
So, like, what's going, what'shappening?

Speaker 1 (15:07):
So it's the dead zone .
I don't think they've quiteexplained.
They visualize what the deadzone is in that issue, but the
dead zone is an area where kaijuare more frequent to attack.
There are a lot of mutatedpeople in the area.
Or imagine living in aradioactive zone.
It's not strictly thateveryone's there dying of

(15:29):
radiation, because this Godzillaisn't radioactive, but dead
zones are all over the world andthe people in there are
affected by something to somedegree.
So it's going to look like crud.
The people are going to lookkind of weird.
The main thing of the dead zoneis that one of the people there
is part Kaiju.
It's not really a spoilerbecause it's on issue, I think

(15:53):
like cover a of issue number one.
But this is running concurrent.
I think it's not confirmed, butI think, based on the Godzilla
issue issue one and dead zone, issue one, that we have
concurrent storylines that willintersect because they're issue
one they talk about the deadzones it's clearly the same time

(16:14):
period and issue two.
You know it completely ignoresall the stuff that happened in
issue one, but it's like thestory leads me to believe that
these two things have toconverge.
But yeah, it's the the deadzone me to believe that these
two things have to converge.
But yeah, it's the.
The dead zone specifically, isa shitty area.
There is still regular world.
But are you gonna?

Speaker 3 (16:29):
say something.
Oh, I was gonna say uh, uh, toadd to what cory said, just for
the uninitiated, the whole kaise era um initiative that's
being published by idw is islike an umbrella term for like
this series of books and cory'salready done a great job of
explaining like each one.
You got the mainline godzillastory, um, you got godzilla, uh,
dead zone and then godzillalost in space and they're like

(16:51):
just different flavors, different takes on like, uh,
certain genre books.
Like the mainline godzilla bookuh follows a superhero team who
is tasked and tracking downgodzilla and, and you know,
killing kaijus and things likethat.
And it follows a centralcharacter that basically gets
like the powers of Godzilla.
He gets the kaijus energy, which they're dubbing the same,

(17:12):
they call it kaijus, the sameenergy that Godzilla has, for
lack of better terms.
And then Dead Zone is more likea horror kind of a feel to it,
slash like post-apocalyptic, youknow genre.
So if you're into that type ofstuff, you know that that'd be
the series.
And starship godzilla follows aragtag team, so things like
guardians of the galaxy in space.

(17:32):
Their ship is mecha godzilla, which I think is so badass, um,
and they get into like spacehijinks with like space kaijus.
So you know, they're exploringlike these different corners of
this universe.
To cory's point, it's like ashared universe, but there's
like just they're just tacklingdifferent corners.
You got space, you got like themainline stuff and then you got
like the dead zone area ofthings like that.

(17:54):
So, even if you don't know muchabout Godzilla, I think all of
the first issues do a reallygood job of like explaining what
the deal is, very good, jumpingon points and IDW speaking to
the editor, uh, they're veryexcited about this.
They've worked really closelywith toho and the fact that toho
is like hell.
Yeah, do what you guys do.
You know, like you got ourblessings.
It's official.
Um, I think it's a huge deal,uh for them to have like a

(18:16):
continuing series like this.
You know, like this built-inworld.

Speaker 2 (18:19):
Uh, I think it's pretty exciting yeah, well, eric
, you know, as somebody who has, like you know, a small affinity
to Godzilla's I have like fiveGodzilla's within, oh my.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
God, look at this little sleepy one.

Speaker 2 (18:33):
I don't have my ducky Godzilla, eric.
I think I may have found my wayinto picking up some comics.

Speaker 4 (18:39):
finally, yeah, no, that's amazing.
I might not be doing that, buthey, I really am enjoying kaiju.
Number eight, season two.
So for what that's?

Speaker 2 (18:50):
worth, I was gonna say.
When I saw the cover for thisfor the deads, I was like man.

Speaker 4 (18:53):
It does remind me of kaiju, number eight all I heard
was cory say that someone's akaiju.
I was like, oh yeah, I watchedthat show.

Speaker 1 (18:59):
Yeah, I know that yeah, it is, it's very shonen.
And to to botter's point, thegodzilla, the self-titled
godzilla, is very shonen, uh,and the main character is
definitely the dude from kaiju, number eight.
Um, but if you were 20 yearsyounger, uh, I was gonna say

(19:20):
also going through a midlifecrisis not yet.

Speaker 3 (19:24):
that'd be a little bit on the nose.
Going through a different kindof crisis, yeah.

Speaker 4 (19:27):
But I think Corey mentioned, like you know how
canon is stuff Like that's beenthe thing that's always like
stopped me from like exploringGodzilla outside of like just
the movie medium.
Honestly, that's been mybiggest thing.

Speaker 2 (19:39):
I think you just don't like Godzilla.

Speaker 4 (19:41):
I love Godzilla minus one.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
That's like one of my favorite movies.

Speaker 4 (19:47):
Love that movie, but you don't like the fun ones yeah
, the Americanized ones, becausethey're not that fun they're so
much fun?

Speaker 1 (19:52):
They're really not.

Speaker 2 (19:53):
Okay, so, unless you forget, Kong used a little
monkey as a bat A big monkeytook a little monkey, I hear
what you're

Speaker 4 (20:01):
saying I can watch those clips and be like, well,
that was cool.
A big monkey through a rockVersus watching a two and a half
hour movie about the conflictitself, which is the least
interesting thing about it.
Come on now.

Speaker 3 (20:14):
Can I say that really quick.
You know, I feel like there'sbeen a trend lately of
especially AMC but I think justmovie theaters in general, where
they're re-releasing a lot oflike movies back in theaters,
like right now I we're recordingtuesday, august 26th I think
the tmnt movie the first teenagemutant turtles movie has been
uh is in theaters right now theyre-release in theaters I guess

(20:36):
the yeah, yes, so jaws isanother one.
Dang, shin godzilla is back intheaters.
I don't know if it's alreadypassed, but I I have been
wanting to watch Shin Godzillafor a while.
So I think it's a cool way ofbeing like oh, I've been wanting
to watch this movie for a while.
I missed it in theaters when itcame out, or I just couldn't go
watch it in theaters.
Now I have the opportunity toget that movie-going experience

(20:58):
for an old new movie, I don'tknow.

Speaker 2 (20:59):
It's kind of cool Corey's going to tell you that
we didn't like Shin Godzilla.
Yeah, he's waiting, he'swaiting.
It doesn't really help thedefense of the I don't like
Godzilla thing, except there'sreally not a lot of Godzilla in
there.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
It's just a lot of conference rooms, so enjoy that.
And I've gotten that talk fromCorey as well.

Speaker 4 (21:21):
I think when we recorded our minus one episode.

Speaker 3 (21:22):
he told me all about it.
Yeah, I think when we recordedour minus one episode.

Speaker 4 (21:24):
he told me all about it.
Yeah, I think going in with theright expectations is the right
thing to do.

Speaker 2 (21:31):
There are going to be some really cool scenes to see
on the big screen.

Speaker 4 (21:33):
So I definitely see the appeal yeah, 100%.
So I think some of those moviesit's a great opportunity to go
back in there and maybe watch itfor the first time.
It's also great for people thathave seen the movie to see it
again on the big screen if theymissed it, like I saw revenge of
the sith earlier this year atthe theater oh yeah great time
great time they're re-releasingthe spider-man uh, the raimi
spider-man films oh, in a coupleweeks.

(21:54):
In theaters earlier this year wedid that was so fucking good so
there's some credence there, like getting these older movies
coming to theaters is great foreverybody, both new and
returning.
But, corey, what were you goingto talk about?
Shin Godzilla?
I'll give you, I'll give youthe floor.
Oh, it's super quick.

Speaker 1 (22:11):
Yeah, I'm not going to go into much other than I
think it's the 31st.
They're supposed AMC issupposed to be releasing the
Shin Godzilla Ortho, which isthe black and white version, and
I've never seen it in black andwhite.
Uh, I think the the blu-ray Ihave, I want to say it's the
japanese edition and they hadn'teven made the black and white

(22:33):
version yet, so I have neverseen it.
So I'm really hyped to go seethat because I wanted to support
sunray, since we have them now.
The it's's at Sunray Stole them, took it from you.
Goddamn right, they did.

Speaker 3 (22:47):
I'm happy for you.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Hey, yo them glizzies them Sunray glizzies.

Speaker 4 (22:52):
I got to tell you just as good as the day I last
saw them.
It's the BJ glizzy I willmention.
Since we're talking about ShinGodzilla, I'll fit this one in
because there was a lot of stuffin August, like Phil mention.
Since we're talking about ShinGodzilla, I'll fit this one in
because there was a lot of stuffin August.
Like Phil, I'm going throughthe discord roundup for later
and I'm gonna have to cut, sothere's too much.
I'm gonna have to filterthrough this.
So I'll throw this in herebecause we're talking about it.
If you don't happen to see ShinGodzilla in theaters, it is

(23:16):
coming to HBO Max alongside aton of anime classics, from your
Name to Perfect Blue, uh,starting in september I think.
Throughout the year going intonext year, there's gonna be a
ton of releases.
I don't know exactly when shingodzilla is releasing, off the
top of my head, but it is comingto hbo max, uh, sooner than
later.
So there you go, pretty coolthere you go, there you go.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
well, I'm pretty happy.
We talked a lot about godzilla,so, uh, that's a good way to
start the episode, but, eric,Mm-hmm.

Speaker 3 (23:48):
Let's bring it back, that MF and wheel.
You guys know the drill.

Speaker 4 (23:55):
Let's go ahead and count it down.

Speaker 3 (23:56):
I'm a baby, all right , I'm coming to play again.

Speaker 4 (23:58):
We're going to do a three a two, a one Spin, Spin,
spin, spin Spin.

Speaker 3 (24:04):
Spin Glizzy Wheel.
Who said glizzy Come?

Speaker 4 (24:08):
on kids.
Could have been anybody.
Could have been anybody.
Oh my God, damn All right.

Speaker 2 (24:15):
There he is.

Speaker 3 (24:16):
I invited the biggest blabbermouth and I have to be
patient.
No wait, my turn.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
Eric, you are up.
What did we miss?

Speaker 4 (24:28):
Oh, eric, you are up.
What did we miss in?
Oh my god, there is.
There is so much to talk about.
I'm gonna go with the one thatI'm just probably the most
passionate about, as as iseverybody, because it doesn't
matter that this movie has beenout for long enough where we
should have moved past it, itdoesn't matter that the music is
catchy and it's just toppingthe charts.
You already know it, phil.
We're going to talk about K-pop,demon Hunters, and we're going

(24:48):
to just talk about the state of,I think, international and
maybe animated films in general, because just this past weekend,
not only did K-pop DemonHunters enter theaters as a
sing-along, mind you, aftertaking the world by storm on
Netflix, in addition to that, alittle film called Nezha 2,
actually released as well, distributed by A24 in English

(25:09):
dub, to a little bit of fanfareas well, a movie that, if you
did not know, a Chinese animatedfilm that is in the top five
highest grossing films ever, notjust the highest animated
grossing film films in periodperiod Avengers game, titanic,
avatar you got to put this filmup there with it now, while a
lot of those sales haveobviously been from the chinese

(25:31):
market, these two movies inparticular, coming back to
theaters.
I watched them as a doublefeature on this past sunday from
recording and I couldn't helpbut just feel a lot of the love
for just something different.
Here in the States, like whenwe talk about animated films and
the ones you typically go to,you'll think about the minion
craze the last year, like whenRise of Gru came out people

(25:55):
dressed up as minions Likethat's not really that serious
when we're talking about, likeactual animated films with some
substance.
Really, k-pop Demon Huntersurprised everybody, I think,
and Neja 2 was such a starkdifference a little bit in tone
but also in animation from thefirst one, in a very positive
way.
So I wanted to bring this upbecause K-Pop Demon Hunter

(26:17):
specifically led with an $18million debut.
Again, it came out a month ago, month ago, little over a month
ago, almost two months ago nowand it topped the box office
when it released.
Now it was going up againstsome weak competition.
Weapons was in like its thirdweekend, but it's still very
impressive nonetheless.
And again, with neja 2 gettinga little bit more buzz and a

(26:39):
little bit more attention withthat english dub, I'm just very
curious what everybody feelswhen it comes to not just these
properties, if you've seen them, but more so the state of, like
animated films or some of theseinternational films that are
starting to make rounds a littlebit more.
They're starting to come to thelimelight and they're starting
to now make impacts into theAmerican box office, which I

(27:02):
think is a great thing.
We have an episode calledInternational Feature, for a
reason, right, phil, I think.
Just because of that, that wasclose to home for me, really got
my mind going and thinkingabout just what the market looks
like now for that genre.

Speaker 2 (27:15):
Yeah, bada, let's throw it to you first, because
we kind of want to get it.
We know Corey has seen it.
What do you know about thisK-pop demon hunters craze?
And also, are you familiar withNezha 2?
Again, a film that released inthe Chinese market to big
numbers early in the year isjust now hitting US box offices
as far as dub goes.
Do you know anything aboutthese two movies or what's your
familiarity with them?

Speaker 3 (27:36):
No, but that's why I like you guys.
You guys have your finger onthe pulse when it comes to pop
culture, mainstream pop culture, and especially like topics like
these pop culture, mainstreampop culture, and especially like
topics like these.
So naza too, um, I would thinkI was looking for a movie to go
watch in theaters, like lastweek or two, and I kept seeing
the poster for naza too and Iwas like what the fuck is this?

(27:57):
And I also saw the, the posterfor k-pop, demon hunters.
So it caught me by surprise.
I don't know much about if I'mbeing fully honest, but this
kind of relates to the topicthat that, uh, the new story
that I've got, um and eric Ithink you said it best it is
interesting to watch thefascination with, um, you know,
korean pop culture and, andmanga I'm sorry, manhwa, I think

(28:19):
they call manhwa over there um,animated movies and everything
like that get over here and havesuch a global appeal.
And I wonder I think you yousaid it uh, you said something
to the effect of um, you know,uh, just wanting something
different.
You know, some of the biggestcomplaints that you'll hear
about, you know, american moviesis that it feels like it's
always a franchise or anunnecessary sequel or a rehash

(28:40):
of some existing property.
And I wonder if maybe that isappealing, maybe that plays a
role into the success of thingslike K-pop, demon Hunter or Neza
.
Is that it's somethingdifferent, you know, it's unique
, it's a standalone thing.
I think also, just the massivepopularity of, you know, k-pop,
music and anime, you know, sinceCOVID, I mean, I think all

(29:03):
those factors play a role here.

Speaker 4 (29:04):
Yeah, that's a great call out because it goes against
the grain of what peoplenormally say.
If you guys are on social media, if you're in movie circles
Phil, I know you hear this a lotOriginal movies are dead.
All we get is sequels, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
But there is so much proof toshow that there are original
concepts that people gravitatetowards.
And while it is kind of truebecause a lot of those sequels

(29:28):
that shouldn't be making moneyare making money and the
original films are not there aretimes like this where it really
goes the opposite direction, which I think is really neat.
And, corey, I mean I knowyou've definitely heard of this,
but Botter, what else do youwant to add?

Speaker 3 (29:46):
I also want to say that I feel like the technology
for making animated movies is soleagues ahead of maybe what we
grew up with, like the dawn ofanimated movies, the early Pixar
stuff and DreamWorks.
It's like I think about acrossthe Spider-Verse how like just
groundbreaking that movie was.
It feels like now that's thenorm of, like you know, very

(30:08):
colorful, very pristine animatedmovies.
It's like the new norm.
So I mean, I feel like animatedmovies are having like a huge
renaissance, you know a newrenaissance period for
themselves.

Speaker 4 (30:18):
Yeah, no, 100 percent , and I'll take Phil's line here
.
Take a shot, if you'relistening to the podcast,
because you already know we'regoing to bring up one of a
couple things.
I mean, phil's brought it upmultiple times how Disney used
to kind of just be the onlything that people looked at as
the staple for animation andthey're getting lapped.
They're getting lapped by SonyPictures.
They're now getting lapped byan international company in

(30:40):
China, the ones that do Neja 2,and other Dreamworks.
Take a shot.
Puss in Boots.
You already know I'm going tobring it up.
Puss in Boots.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
The.

Speaker 4 (30:48):
Last Wish is genuinely a top 10 favorite film
for me all time.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
I love that movie.

Speaker 4 (30:54):
I love that movie so fucking much, but it's so great
from an animation standpointspecifically that, yeah, it's
just so, so damn good.
Corey, this is your chance tokind of hop in here.
What has been your feeling withall the craze around either of
these properties and just again, the topic in general about how

(31:14):
these original movies are kindof taking new life in the
American culture, the so the,the specifically for K-pop demon
hunters hunters, but it willspread to basically everything
else.

Speaker 1 (31:27):
The thing that I feel like I've heard people say is
k-pop demon hunters iseverything that disney wants to
be, the, the stories thatthey're trying to tell, but
they're so stuck on that uh,kind of pixar feel or the
princess feel.
It's like someone's mom has todie or there has to be like an

(31:47):
ugly stepmother, and that's, Ifeel like a lot of the times why
their, their new propertiesaren't doing well, it's because
they're not writing very goodstories.
The music isn't that great, um,or maybe the message isn't
quite what they thought itshould be.
And k-pop demon hunters I thinkwe watched it twice in the same

(32:09):
week.
Brennan and I watched it andthen we were hanging out with
neighbors and it's like, youknow, we things kind of calmed
down and it's like, hey, y'allwant to watch k-pop demon
hunters.
And they're like, yeah, sure,whatever.
So we watched it with him.
Yeah, k-pop slaps.
I think at this point, everyeveryone knows it.
But those who have not beenwanting to listen to k-pop, uh,

(32:31):
like, I've been listening tok-pop for what are you?
Probably like 11 or 12 years, like I'm not super deep into it.
But I I at least know of musicas far back as a decade ago and
it's been interesting to see itevolve in that time.
So, yeah, even longer than that.
Because Psy good god, I don'tknow when Gangnam Style came out
, but it was before that.

(32:52):
But now more people know of itand it is a pop sound that
America doesn't quite have, sospecifically for k-pop, demon
hunters, people.
People are like oh cool, it isa an animated musical, number
one.
It looks very much likeSpider-Man, but toned down,
still very high quality.

(33:12):
Just not none of the sparklesthat Spider-Man has, but very
well animated, very artisticallyanimated, not bubbly and round
and soft, looking like disneyhas kind of gotten into um, and
then again an amazing soundtrack.
Like it doesn't really matterhow you feel about the movie, um

(33:36):
, whether you like it or not.
I know so many I.
I have some of the whitestfriends I know that are like yo,
yeah, I just watched, they justwatched it in, just watched it
in theaters with theirgirlfriend and they're like yeah
, I've been listening to youridol on repeat and so I
literally have had to go out ofmy way to like start creating a
playlist, to be like okay, letme just overload you with stuff.

(33:58):
You know where this came from.
On the topic of Neja and foreignfilms in general, it's still
kind of the same thing.
Everyone has their own way oftelling a story and that's why
every country has their own typeof literature.
Um, japanese have their ownvery weird type of drama.

(34:18):
Uh, we, we like our generallyaction flicks, we like our
princess stories, um, but whenyou have something like neja
that makes its way over herebecause I I'm pretty sure I've
seen neja, I need to re-watch itto be sure.
But the first one looks veryfamiliar and 2019 sounds about
right for how, like when?

(34:39):
I think I might have seen that.
But you know, animated films arecoming from overseas.
High quality animated films arecoming from these overseas
studios and they're telling easyto consume stories, but in a
different way than what we'refamiliar with, and with, uh,
places like Netflix.
Um, trying to think of any kindof obscure streaming service,

(35:00):
hulu wouldn't air it, uh, butyou've got HBO, we'll kind of
pull in some weird stuff.
Netflix is probably the biggestone that pulls in the strangest
things.
It's a lot easier to get kidsinto foreign content and then
have them start saying oh youknow, maybe maybe I really like
Chinese stuff, maybe I likeKorean stuff, and I think this
is speaking to Disney and Pixar.

(35:22):
They have so many movies thatare that are about various
heritages.
You know, you've got Moana, you've got Encanto, yeah, even
how to Train your Dragon is, youknow, viking mythology.
So you have all of these, allof these, you, you know tales

(35:44):
that are coming from other, thatare based on, you know, other
countries or other time periods, but they're not coming from
those countries.
It's not a story that's beingtold by the people who grew up
in that.
So it is, yeah, it's somethingthat's fascinating, like that's.
That's why I'm into a lot ofjapanese stuff, chinese, korean,
I think, I think cory's nailingit.

Speaker 3 (36:04):
uh, I think there's a certain novelty to it as well
as a sense of like, oh, this ishow it's done over there.
You know, and I don't mean thatin a derogatory term, but like,
oh, for example, I'm looking upNezha is based on and I
probably am saying it wrong, Iapologize, but it's based on a
Chinese mythological story fromlike the 16th century.

(36:25):
I just got done playing blackmyth wukong, which is also based
on one of the oldestmythologies ever.
You know, a journey to the uh,journey to the west, and it, it,
it, it had me hooked for almostlike the better part of this
year and I think there was alittle bit of that novelty to it
where it's like, oh, this isbased on a chinese story that
I've, you know, I've, I'mfamiliar with, but I don't know
to the extent.

(36:45):
And then you know, you doresearch and it's like, oh, this
is like the biggest, this istheir odyssey.
You know, like how we worship, you know stories like the
odyssey.
It is interesting to be like,oh, this is, I'm being
introduced to a differentculture, to uh, to their stories
, and I mean it's fresh, right, like, it makes sense that
something like a 824 or Netflixwould hop on this, like they're
looking for original content.

(37:06):
And you know, and I think, inthis day and age of the Internet
, like there is no boundariesfor exporting creative things
like this.
It doesn't matter that you knowit may come from China or Korea
.
It's like you know, this is theInternet, this is the age of
entertainment, like we'llconsume it all if it's fresh
this is the age of entertainment, like we'll consume it all if

(37:26):
it's fresh.

Speaker 2 (37:26):
I I will say and, eric, I'm sure you've come
across this too as far as thedub release of nasia 2 did not
perform very well, and Iprobably feel like it's because
any of us that wanted to see itsaw it back in february.
I've told you that I'm not thebiggest fan of the dub.
Um, so, you know, as far asaudiences go, like it didn't
seem they were super interestedin this because they a lot of

(37:47):
people that they are probablytrying to market to, like a24 is
taking a stab at this probablydidn't see the first movie.
So, yeah, they probably shouldhave released the first movie in
dub in theaters earlier in thisyear, maybe when the second
movie came out in sub, and thendone it this way.
It was just a reallyinteresting decision to all this
time, six months later, releasethe dub when, yeah, most of us
have already seen it that arefamiliar with the franchise.

(38:08):
You know.

Speaker 4 (38:09):
Yeah, and I think the fact that it got the A24
release.
They got Michelle Yeoh on boardto voice a character that she
didn't voice in the first oneand wasn't great.
I'm gonna be honest with you.
It's unfortunate, but that beingsaid, it's a big name attached

(38:30):
to it and the fact that it gotthat re-release.
I mean, that movie isn't harmedfrom that release because it is
so popular overseas, but Ithink the fact that it got that
distribution is just a big voteof confidence.
Now, of course, I'm sure A24saw the numbers of Neja too and
they said, yeah, we got to tryto take a shot at that.
And I think you are right, phil, had they released the first

(38:50):
one leading up to it, I thinkmore people would have been
interested to check it out.
I do think it's a movie youcould potentially see without
seeing the first one.
There is some context missingthere, but it's so grand and
epic that I think it could bedone.
But again, it wasn't reallymarketed in that way and I think
that had a lot to do with it.
And then, in the talks of K-popDemon Hunters, one thing to
clarify too this was a SonyPictures project, so it was an

(39:13):
American Boy, did they fumble?
It was an American project thatwas released about K-pop, demon
Hunters.
But everything about this filmwas true to the culture, true
from the way that the characterswere drawn to the music.
All of that stuff was veryauthentic and it's very scary to
see an American company try todo something as ambitious as

(39:36):
this.
It normally goes left.
So the fact that it went thecomplete opposite direction and
was a success is amazing.
The bummer, like you mentioned, phil sony pictures then sold it
to netflix and now netflix isreaping all the didn't believe
in it, they didn't believe in it.

Speaker 2 (39:52):
And now it.
Now netflix has a hold of itand uh, you know we're gonna get
sequels, it's completed.

Speaker 1 (39:58):
When sony got rid of, when they sold it, was it like
fully finished?
Did netflix have to?

Speaker 2 (40:03):
I'm not complete anything themselves.

Speaker 1 (40:05):
Okay, I do believe that was the case, though I
think, I think, I think theywere not sure it was enough that
they should have known whatthey had, in my opinion.

Speaker 4 (40:15):
But I don't think they thought it would perform
very well and uh, yeah, I meanI'm too busy not making
Spider-Man across the spider.

Speaker 2 (40:23):
Whatever the hell.
The next one is Don't beworried, I will be honest,
though.

Speaker 4 (40:27):
I mean, we talked about K-Pop, demon Hunter on
this series for the podcast andI was like I don't have any
interest in this especially onceI saw it.
Oh yeah, I pointed it out along time ago, like a few months
back.
That plays basketball.
So like you know what I mean, like I'm not going to be
interested in.

Speaker 3 (40:45):
I'm not going to be interested in every.

Speaker 4 (40:48):
And then they did like a dog, Ren and Stimpy, type
like type like gross comedy, dark comedy type thing.

Speaker 1 (40:55):
Oh, was it that Gennady Tartakovsky thing you?

Speaker 4 (40:59):
would know what it is .
It's like yeah it's apparentlya lot of dog buttholes is what I
heard.
It's like, yeah, it'sapparently a lot of dog
buttholes is what I heard.

Speaker 2 (41:08):
So I'm not going to always love everything.

Speaker 4 (41:09):
Sony Pictures does.
But I think I was more thrownoff, fixed, yeah, I think I was
more thrown off by the fact that, again, it wasn't like an
international film and they weretrying to just like capitalize
on K-pop.
And, yes, the K-pop music inthere is very catchy, but
there's so much heart behindsome of these songs and the
message and just the delivery, everything about it, uh,

(41:29):
top-notch, cannot recommend itenough.
I don't know if I told you this.
I did bump it up to a four anda half out of five.
Let's go.

Speaker 2 (41:36):
Yeah, there's, no, there's no theater experience
would have changed the wholething.
Oh, it was so good, it was sogood, so good I'm, I'm on.

Speaker 4 (41:44):
I'm like this close to putting neja 2 at a 4.5 I I
don't know if I can give it toit yet, but uh, k-pop, demon
hunters is my number one movieof the year, probably won't be
defeated and it is at a four anda half out of five.
Uh, the only reason it doesn'tget the five is celine.
It's specifically that thatjust there's not enough growth
with that character.
Uh, phil for the um, for thescene towards the end of the

(42:06):
film.
So I don't think it'll ever geta five in my opinion, but a
four and a half, I mean, is damnnear perfect the last thing
I'll say about um as I bring upthe wheel.

Speaker 2 (42:15):
the last thing I'll say before we spin is it's it's
kind of crazy that neja doesn'thave any type of presence over
here, because and like we'vetalked about, I think, when we
did the episode on it we don'tsee anything at conventions Neja
related, and that's how you geta really good pulse on what is
what people are looking for.
You go to a convention rightnow all K-pop Demon Hunters.
You can't turn a corner inArtist Alley without seeing

(42:38):
K-pop Demon Hunter stuff.

Speaker 1 (42:51):
I've never once seen anything Neja, which is a bummer
because it does feel likeespecially the first one, would
appeal very much so to aspecific younger demographic,
but it's got no footprint.
But we'll see, they'll be inasia.
Three, so we'll see.
Yeah, real quick before thespin at tampa bay comic-con uh,
on day two there was a dude bareminimum six and a half feet
tall, probably like six, eight, you know, built like a
basketball player, walkingaround in the final roomie
outfit amazing white top yeah, white crop top, white short

(43:15):
skirt anime because I saw a verysimilar cosplay super tall dude
, yeah with yeah yep with thepattern skirt, crop top yep,
yeah.

Speaker 2 (43:26):
So yeah, uh, if you can't tell about it, we very
much recommend it, so uh, makeit, make it a movie night and I
am just sitting here absorbing, but you guys have kind of sold
me on this.

Speaker 3 (43:38):
Uh, nasia, I think I'm gonna check it out.

Speaker 2 (43:39):
We're going down this global phenomenon they if they
re-released in theaters.
We're going down to sunray.
We'll watch it in Tampa.

Speaker 4 (43:46):
Hell yeah, hell yeah.

Speaker 3 (43:48):
Weight Watchers unite .
There you go, that's right.
I'll bring the glizzies.

Speaker 2 (43:51):
All right, eric, I'll just bring my own.
All right, Eric, you're up.
All right guys.
Oh my God.

Speaker 4 (44:02):
You know what?
Is that my voice?
Is that my voice?

Speaker 2 (44:07):
Is that my voice?

Speaker 1 (44:10):
We're going to count down Three, two, one, spin, spin
.

Speaker 4 (44:16):
That Wheel Wheel.
Wow, that was really good.
We got the wheel part down.
We did you guys did great there.

Speaker 2 (44:24):
It's basically a 50 50.

Speaker 3 (44:26):
Oh, you guys gonna get a double dose of me at the
end, I guarantee you, hell yeahhonestly that that doesn't work,
because we usually do it.

Speaker 4 (44:34):
Didn't make the cut, so we might as well.

Speaker 2 (44:36):
Go back to back perfect there we go, it worked
out yeah, and also mine's kindof like relatively short, I
might throw in my second one,we'll see how this goes.
But.
But I just kind of wanted totalk to you guys, these two
guests, specifically, just kindof about the rebooting of the
DCU or the new DCU essentially, you know, with James Gunn taking

(44:56):
the helm, and I want to getyour thoughts on Superman.
We'll do that in a moment.
But James Gunn has addressedMargot Robbie's place in the new
DCU and also another characterhe would like to bring in.
He was quoted as a pretty, pretty short quote, but he said
that'll be revealed down theline in terms of Marco Robbie's
involvement.

(45:17):
But then he also went on to sayI definitely am always looking
for a place to put Bloodsportand figuring that out, of course
referring to Idris Elba fromthe Suicide Squad, at least
released a couple of years ago.
So first question, before weget to just kind of the DCU
overall and also Superman, arethere any other characters from
any of the DCEU movies that youwould like to see return?

(45:38):
He has said he's going to bringBlue Beetle in, the same actor
whose name is escaping me rightnow, and I watched that movie
last year.
It's not bad, it's.
I wouldn't have seen it intheaters but it's pretty
enjoyable in terms of by itselfand the characters were
enjoyable, it looks like a moviethat delivers exactly what the
trailers probably show.

(45:59):
Exactly so I'm happy for thatactor because he seems like a
great guy.
So are there any charactersyou'd like to see return in
James Gunn's DCU?
And then kind of get youroverall thoughts on Superman,
because I'm pretty sure both ofyou have seen it.
I'll throw it to you first, corey.

Speaker 1 (46:13):
I want Cyborg from Doom Patrol because the actor
was great and he had.
They had real armor and realprops and they would use CG to
switch between them, but theywere still real props and I
thought that was a lot of fun.
I kind of doubt they're goingto go that route, but I really

(46:34):
would like to see, uh, morecyborg because he's been, like I
think, done the most dirty forbeing such a cool character.
Yeah, like he they.
They had to release a wholeother four hour cut of a movie
just to bring cyborg back, and Idon't I mean, I can probably

(46:55):
name two people who've seen himin doom patrol and I'm only
assuming that one of them isbotter.
I don't know if you actuallywatch that or not?

Speaker 3 (47:01):
I think I did not.
Actually it was the same.

Speaker 1 (47:04):
It was the same actor a different actor, different.
Yeah okay, got it, got it yeahdifferent actor, um, but like
the whole outfit, everything wasuh, it's, he's wearing a real
outfit, it's no cg, so it justlooked great.
And again, whenever he wouldhave to transform his arm from
like a fist to a gun, they woulduse cg to do the transformation

(47:24):
, but it would still be a real, like gun arm prop at the end of
that transformation.
Um, but even, uh, even in thethe snyder cut, we just I, I
thoroughly enjoyed, uh, cyborg'srole.
I don't know any of the teentitans, I don't know well.
As far as returning because thequestion was returning

(47:45):
characters I think that's who Iwould want.
I've had enough of jason momoaAquaman.

Speaker 2 (47:52):
He's going to be great.
Who's he going to be?
He's going to be.

Speaker 3 (47:55):
Lobo, which I think is there, we go Just like that,
I think, is just be you so muchbetter yeah.

Speaker 1 (48:01):
Like I, I enjoyed him as Aquaman.
I'm not I'm not dissing thatAqua bro was probably like the
highlight of that entirefranchise, but light of that
entire franchise, uh, but yeah,I, everyone else, it's like no,
I, I take it back the suicidesquad.
They had good characters, yes,but cyborg, cyborg they could do
more with him.
Everyone else, I think, gottheir just desserts, like come

(48:25):
on, look at peacemaker.
And idris elba like it's sogood, they've got enough, yeah
butter.

Speaker 2 (48:30):
What about you?
Would you like to see return, and when?
Why is it duane the rockjohnson as black?

Speaker 3 (48:38):
eye.
Look, that movie was so bad.
We haven't heard from duane, uh.
We haven't heard from the rocksense.

Speaker 2 (48:42):
He went back to wrestling he's uh he's in a
scorsese movie, so that's whathe he heard he's about to be in
this.
Is it scorsese eric or is it um?

Speaker 4 (48:50):
yeah, no, it it's a.

Speaker 2 (48:50):
Scorsese film.
He's filming that now, and thenthe Smashing.

Speaker 4 (48:56):
Machine that's coming out, the MMA movie he's doing
Get out of here.
He's been quiet though.

Speaker 2 (49:01):
He's been quiet as hell.
First he had to ruinWrestleMania and then now he's
returning to acting.

Speaker 3 (49:09):
But anyway, father who?

Speaker 2 (49:10):
would you like to see ?

Speaker 3 (49:11):
I'm sorry, I'm just like so blown away right now by,
uh, the rock really is starringin a scorsese movie I got, I
mean, come on, god, I kind ofwant, and it's leonardo dicaprio
is going to be in this movietoo, apparently okay anyway,
sorry, sorry to answer yeahright to answer.
Oh, and emily blunt as well.
Anyways, uh, to answer yourquestion, uh, I'm gonna go with

(49:32):
uh king shark from the 2021James Gunn Suicide Squad movie,
which, you know, we're talkingabout a CGI character, but
voiced by none other thanSylvester.

Speaker 1 (49:42):
Stallone, sylvester Stallone, which.

Speaker 3 (49:44):
I thought was a good mirror to like you know we had
Vin Diesel.

Speaker 2 (49:50):
Yes or no way, that is your hand.
You know Vin Diesel playing.

Speaker 3 (49:53):
Groot.
Sylvester Stallone playing KingShark Just feels right.
I feel like there needs to bethat balance between the DCU and
the MCU.
And you know I've gone onrecord in saying that the James
Gunn Suicide Squad movie is oneof my favorite superhero movies
period.
That movie was phenomenal, youknow.

(50:18):
Like he just continued to prove, like I will take any ragtag
team, any z-list character yougot, for goodness sakes.
He had david uh daltz malchianplaying polka dot man in this
movie and I teared up at polkadot man's, like you know, final
scene uh margaret robey is,would have been my answer had
you not already prefaced the uhthis topic with that.
I think she is the epitome ofharley quinn.
She brings a certain flair, uhfun and just homicidal, just fun
to any movie that she's in.

(50:39):
So it's good to hear that he'strying to bring back as many,
many of like the good actors, atleast from like, the previous
incarnation of the dcu, umedra's album being another good
one.
So final answer sylvesterstallone playing King Shark.

Speaker 1 (50:52):
Why not Jared Leto's about to be freed up once Tron
releases?

Speaker 3 (50:57):
You don't have to.
He can stay with my guy.

Speaker 2 (50:59):
Way over there.
Yeah, also, I think it'll begood to bring it's going to be
good to bring back Margot andalso Jason Momoa, because they
were.
They both really care abouttheir characters as well.
Yeah, and they feel a sense ofownership over them, which is
great.
I don't think this countsbecause this show is still going
on, but like can we get a liveaction Kite man?

(51:20):
I would just really enjoyhearing Kite man.

Speaker 4 (51:25):
Hell, yeah, you already know we're getting Kite
man, so I don't know why youbrought that up.
Look, knowing James Gunn, youknow he loves he was.
Yeah, I don't know why youbrought that up, knowing James
Gunn he loves the obscurecharacters that are supposed to
be a joke.

Speaker 3 (51:36):
He loves making them even more of a joke, but also
adding some heart to it.

Speaker 4 (51:40):
We're getting Kite man, calendar man, any man, all
the man.

Speaker 2 (51:45):
All the man.
I don't need your help.
I'm a goddamn Mr Terrific.
Insert adjective man.
Mr Terrific was so good.

Speaker 3 (51:52):
If you have an adjective before your name and
your last name is man, you'llprobably be in a jam.

Speaker 2 (51:56):
You're probably in.

Speaker 3 (51:56):
That's true, that's true.

Speaker 2 (51:58):
Eric, what about you?
Are there any of thosecharacters you would like to see
in the James Gunn DCU?

Speaker 4 (52:03):
I would like to have a pretty fresh slate.
I know they talked about howbad everything ended with Henry
Cavill like being announced asreturning as Superman, but he
wasn't actually gonna be, sothey had to have a talk.
They did say maybe he'd haveanother role, so as an actor, as
a sign of good faith, that'd bemaybe interesting.
I think what would be moreinteresting and I don't know if

(52:25):
you can really count this aspart of the DCEU, but I'll say
it till I'm blue in the face Iwant to see the guy that played
the Flash in the CW televisionshow.

Speaker 2 (52:34):
Yeah, the Flash in live action, something Grant
right.

Speaker 3 (52:39):
What's his first name ?
Grant Gustin.

Speaker 4 (52:41):
Yeah, grant Gustin, I think, is his name.
I should know that, because thefirst two seasons of the Flash,
specifically where they do theFlashpoint story, it's fantastic
.
Fantastic for what they put ontelevision and what they could
put on television.
It just puts everything thatthey've tried to do with the
flash and live action so far, uhon the big screen to shame.

(53:04):
So I would love to see him geta real crack at it.
Uh, because I really do thinkhe embodies what I think of when
I think of barry allen.
But I'd also be interested tosee some, uh, you know, wally
west, some other flashes, because I really do think he
embodies what I think of when Ithink of Barry Allen.
But I'd also be interested tosee some Wally West, some other
flashes.
That would be interesting too.
So they could go that route andI wouldn't be mad.
But yeah, grant Gustin would bemy choice.

Speaker 2 (53:23):
We were joking about it.
I know, I joked about it alittle bit earlier.
But what about Pierce?

Speaker 3 (53:31):
Brosnan as.

Speaker 2 (53:31):
Dr Fate, I feel like that was actually one of the
good parts of the.

Speaker 3 (53:34):
Black Adam movie, so I wouldn't hate that Probably
the best part of that.

Speaker 4 (53:36):
It was the Justice what, the Justice what do?

Speaker 1 (53:39):
they call them Justice Society, justice Society
.

Speaker 4 (53:41):
I'd be good with all of them, Like that whole group.
That was probably the moreenjoyable part.
They were the best part of themovie yeah.

Speaker 2 (53:48):
But, yeah, it would be excited that some of those
characters will be returning, and you know he's off to a
really good start.
So, yeah, before we get intothe last wheel spin which we
will do, don't worry, botter Doyou guys want to give really
quick thoughts on Supermanbefore we?
Before we move on, botter, I'llthrow it to you first.

Speaker 3 (54:07):
I think I record a whole episode about Superman,
but I will I will.
I will condense it into this.
Superman was needed, I think.
Had that movie flopped, I thinkwe would all be looking at
James Gunn in this new DCuniverse relaunch a little
sideways, but I had no doubt inmy mind that it was going to be
a success.
Considering the amount ofmarketing that they put in, I

(54:29):
mean, how good the movie wasitself Very refreshing, you know
like to see Superman get thespotlight again.
That's how Superman should be.
You know he's one of the mosticonic characters of all of.
You know American pop culture.
You know like he is Americanpop culture.
You know he's Americana as theycome.
So that is the reverence andprestige that I think that
character deserves.

(54:50):
And it was just a really funmovie.
I had like very minor gripes, Ithink.
You know it's a movie that hitsthe ground running and sometimes
we sacrifice character depthand, like you know, really kind
of getting into like thenitty-gritty, you know, and
certain explanations gets tossedto the side in favor of just a
very fast-paced, fun,action-packed movie.

(55:11):
You know I was talking toBlythe about this and she
brought it up because we werewatching Peacemaker where it's
like, you know, peacemaker feelslike James Gunn at his best.
It's like, hey, this is whatJames Gunn does.
He does very crude, very youknow X-rated comedy and humor
and you know, for the adults, you know, and I feel like when
he does Peacemaker it's himhaving all the fun.

(55:34):
I can just tell he's having ablast being obscure, absurd, and
all of that With Superman.
You know he killed it, but I'dbe curious to see that Superman
in another director's handswho's maybe a little less jokey
and wants to elevate, you know, the character in a more serious
way.
But overall I mean, come on,that superman movie was

(55:55):
phenomenal.
It's probably gonna end up onmy best of list for sure.

Speaker 2 (55:58):
Best of end of the year, best of list for sure yeah
, I've seen it twice and I'vesaid this before as someone who
did not care about superman.
Um, going through that movieand seeing it the first time, I
was like I get it.
I like I understand, understandwhy Superman sits on this
pedestal for people, because foryears I just didn't really care
too much.
Corey, what about you?

Speaker 1 (56:17):
Yeah, I really enjoyed it.
I also recorded a like fiveminute thing just this morning
for the Comic Zombie Podcast, which is run by Eric Slater.
So, yeah, they're going to bereleasing an episode on Superman
.
They already did like a fullreview of the whole visual
franchise, uh, and now they'regoing to be doing one of the

(56:37):
upcoming movie.
But my main takeaway and I'llfocus it on Superman was this is
kind of the ideal version ofthe one dimensional Superman.
When creators make a onedimensional character that has
like one thing that they stickto, the creators themselves are
generally the ones that fault.
When those characters startCreators make a one-dimensional
character that has like onething that they stick to, the

(56:58):
creators themselves aregenerally the ones at fault when
those characters start to kindof become boring or just fall
out of favor.
You know I'm generally withlike Phil and with a lot of
people, I don't like SupermanConceptually great, terrible
execution.
But this is great because he'sone-sided, he's altruistic and
that is put to the test and hehas to choose to remain
altruistic and I think one ofthe best parts of the movie is

(57:20):
when he gets mad at lex.
A lot of people don't realizethat you can be altruistic and
mad monks can get mad.
And he screams at him and he'slike you know, I love, I have,
you know, feelings.
I cry, like all this stuff andthe entire movie.
This dude's just trying to findhis dog and we find out at the

(57:40):
end that he's just helping outhis sister who makes terrible
life choices.
He's trying to maintain hislove life and have a
professional career and then atthe very end it's like he breaks
and he's like dude, justfucking stop.

Speaker 3 (57:55):
Like I'm just like that really quick.
On top of that, he's alsodealing with a massive smear
camp, smear campaign yeaheverything that he grew up
thinking about his, his birthparents is, like you know, wrong
yeah, so he's.

Speaker 1 (58:08):
He's got a lot of emotions on his plate and this
movie does a great job of likewhat does a paragon of society
have to face and how do theydeal with it?
And it's not as overly dramaticas man of Steel, but he still
has a lot to face and you cansee him cracking as the movie is

(58:31):
going on because all he wantsto do is the right thing and
then, in order to escape, he'sgot to help some random ass
dude's baby.
He's getting sucked into likean interdimensional portal.

Speaker 3 (58:46):
Like he had a rough week man.
In the same regard, it's alsoreally cool that James Gunn
decides to lean into the sci-fi,almost fantasy elements of
Superman, when it's all thesetrials Almost as if he's a
mythological character likeHercules, the 12 Trials of
Hercules, all these things thatSuperman has to overcome and

(59:08):
accomplish in what seems like a48-hour time span yeah, I think
really paints the picture ofjust the kind of world that he
lives in.

Speaker 2 (59:16):
I will not forgive the test audiences for making
them remove, because this allhappens within the span of a
week and throughout the moviethere were title cards,
essentially Monday, tuesday,wednesday.

Speaker 4 (59:29):
Thursday.
Kind of similar to what theydid in the Suicide.

Speaker 2 (59:31):
Squad, which I know, Eric, you didn't like that part
of it, but yeah, it all happenedover the course of a few days
and test audiences didn't likeit, so they removed it.

Speaker 3 (59:39):
Fair enough.
You know, this is definitely, Ithink, because this movie had
so much writing on it.
I can see how they would wantto maybe make those kind of
changes based on the reaction.
Most of the times I'm like oh,you know, don't be a don't be a
punk.
Like you know, stick to theartistic vision.
But I think a lot was ridingfor this movie so not surprised.

Speaker 2 (59:59):
Yeah, so, but yeah, dcu trending in the right
direction.
I actually do have one more.
The last person, the personthey should actually bring back,
is Milton from the SuicideSquad, who dies unceremoniously
and who's Milton Milton?
Was still with us.
Do you remember the guy thatdies in?

Speaker 1 (01:00:18):
the office.
Oh yeah, and he's like Miltonwas still with us.

Speaker 2 (01:00:26):
And Harley's like who's Milton?

Speaker 3 (01:00:28):
That's right, damn, I forgot about that.
So yeah let's bring Con.

Speaker 2 (01:00:32):
Milton and then bring Milton back.
But speaking of bringing thingsback, Eric, one more time.

Speaker 4 (01:00:41):
Yeah, yeah, awesome, yeah, thank goodness Thank
goodness, I like that.

Speaker 3 (01:00:47):
Who's it going to be?
Will we have?

Speaker 2 (01:00:50):
red, blue butter or red pill butter.

Speaker 3 (01:00:52):
Yeah, we're going to find out.

Speaker 4 (01:00:55):
We are going to find out.

Speaker 3 (01:00:56):
All right guys.
Red pill, butter, all right.

Speaker 4 (01:00:59):
We're going to count down, we're going to do it Three
, two, one.

Speaker 1 (01:01:07):
Spin that wheel.

Speaker 2 (01:01:12):
Who's it going to be?
Oh boy, I got a lot riding onBotter.

Speaker 3 (01:01:16):
Oh, Red Botter Red.

Speaker 1 (01:01:19):
Nice Pokemon Red Botter.

Speaker 2 (01:01:21):
All right.

Speaker 3 (01:01:23):
Botter.
I hate Moroccans coming to ourcountry in these Chinese movies.

Speaker 2 (01:01:26):
That's just Red Botter, red Botter, right, all
right.

Speaker 3 (01:01:28):
Botter.

Speaker 2 (01:01:30):
What did we miss in the month of August?
So?

Speaker 3 (01:01:32):
obviously butter, right.
All right, what did we miss inthe month of august?
Uh, so, obviously I was.
Uh, do I overthink?
Absolutely I overthink a lot ofthings.
So I overthought, like whatstories I was gonna bring to the
wait for a podcast, because Ididn't want to, I didn't want to
like come half-stepping rightand I was like, well, obviously
I'm the the comic book guy, I'mthe podcast guy, so I gotta
bring some comic book topics, like I want to make it
interesting.
So both of my stories arecentered around comic books, but

(01:01:56):
digital, what's going on in thedigital space, because that to
me has been a very interestingspace in the comic book industry
and seeing how that isdeveloping and finally getting
caught up with the time.
So my first story both of theseobviously came from the middle
of August.
My first story is based on theGlobal Comics comic book

(01:02:18):
platform.
All right, so Global Comics isa digital comic book platform,
meaning that they host a lot ofdifferent comic books.
You can go there and read DCcomics, you could read indie
comics from Image Comics, boomComics.
But they also let indiecreators host their comics on
this platform, and not just fromamerica but all over the world.

(01:02:38):
That's the name global comicsit's in the name so you know you
could read comic books fromindie creators from egypt,
africa, the philippines, uh,korea, you know, etc.
Like all over it's.
It's open to everyone.
Well, earlier this month theyannounced that they are now
partnering up with kodansha, which is one of the largest, you
know, most iconic mangapublishers out there, to put

(01:03:00):
some of their titles andproperties on the global comics
platform, which is a huge dealin terms of, you know, uh,
increasing the uh accessibilityand reach of manga.
I think, right now for Kodanshaand when I say Kodansha, some
of the titles and series thatthey have and own Attack on
Titan, battle, angel, alita, ghost in the Shell is apparently

(01:03:23):
also a Kodansha series, initialD Vinland Saga, like all of
these very popular iconic mangaseries that belong to Kodansha.
Right now, for you to even readthose series, you either have
to buy the physical books atlike a Books, a Million or a
bookstore, or be subscribed totheir digital platform.
I think they've got astandalone app as well.

(01:03:44):
Well, this now just increasesthe reach of these manga series.
You know, because Global Comicsis a very fast and very rising
in popularity among like folkslike myself who like to read
their comic books digitally.
Global comics already likehosts over a thousand, a hundred
, I think.
When I checked it was like overa hundred thousand comics, so
you can imagine how much thathas increased now with the uh

(01:04:07):
addition of kodansha titles aswell.
Um, so, very big, very uh a abig deal, and I think this is
something that you know.
I'm definitely going to bewatching this going forward,
because there is no other to myknowledge at the moment.
I think there might besomething in the works, but I
don't think any other digitalcomic platform has, you know,

(01:04:27):
has partnered with a mangapublisher, so this is a big deal
in that regard that you know.
You can go to one place to readAmerican as well as global
comics, but also manga, which istypically not the most reading
manga digitally is.
You know, either you've got theShonen Jump app or you get the
Viz Media app.
Like I said, I want to sayKodansha has their own service
as well, but now you've gotanother option as well.

(01:04:48):
So, according to this articlefrom Comics Beat, it says that
on August 21st, which is alreadypassed, they put 500
hand-picked books fromKodansha's catalog on the Global
Comics platform.
One thing that I do want tonote is that for Global Comics,
you can either have a freeaccount or you can pay like a
very nominal, like monthlymembership fee.

(01:05:10):
I think they've also got anannual fee as well.
It's like 60 bucks and you getaccess to just about every book
on there.
Some books are hidden behind apaywall, but with this
particular partnership, uh, atthe moment it's a la carte, so
it's not like you can stream orread the books for free, like
you get the first couple pagesof any of these manga series I
named, and then it's like, hey,you know, whatever 10 bucks to

(01:05:31):
get the rest, which is, you know, obviously not the thing that
most of us want to hear, butit's a step in the right
direction.
At least they're availablewithin the same platform.
As you know, I could be readingAttack on Titan and then switch
over to like Invincible if Iwanted, within the same app,
which I think is pretty cool.
So August 21st they did a verykind of like soft launch of over
500 titles and then later thisweek actually this week that

(01:05:54):
we're recording, august 27ththey're adding another like
thousand.
Now they're really opening thefloodgates in terms of what
they're offering.
So, like I said, we're lookingat Attack on Titan, witch Hat
Atelier I think that's how yousay it Vinland Saga and a whole
bunch of other ones will beavailable on Global Comics.
One little bonus thing that Iwant to mention, too, is that,

(01:06:15):
uh, some of these are gettinglike simulcast, so the same time
that it comes out, you know, inJapan or wherever, will also be
available at the same time onGlobal Comics.
Specifically, they're the YoungMagazine.
Have you guys ever heard ofthat?
Young Magazine is like, uh,another version of, like Shonen
Jump.
Remember the old Shonen Jumpmagazines?
Well, young magazine is muchlike that too, which I think is

(01:06:36):
is very interesting, because, assomeone that used to go to beg
his dad to go to win dixie, togo buy the paper, you know,
shonen jump phone book size book, I have been kind of fiending
for something like that again,to like kind of have like an
anthology series.
So, uh, global comics is doingsome interesting things with
kadansha.
Very interesting, uh, that theywere able to get this

(01:06:56):
partnership.
I know that, like I said, mangapublishers can sometimes be
very tricky when it comes tooffering digital titles.
Um, so, looking forward toseeing how this grows and what
the next steps are.
I wish I had a cool question tofollow up on that, but I guess
any initial thoughts at this andI guess, corey, I'm looking at
you because you're my residentanime manga guy.

Speaker 1 (01:07:18):
Yeah, so, like right now, it seems like most of the
stuff they have is it's older.
I mean naming titles like ThinSaga, Ghost in the Shell, attack
on titan.
This is stuff that's alreadydone, but there is.
I I think this is pretty cool.
As far as getting access tostuff, um, I was literally just

(01:07:40):
I was at the comic shop earliertoday.
Uh, he didn't realize, and mostpeople do not realize, that one
of the most popular ways todistribute manga in japan, even
going as far back as at like atleast the 80s, is where I keep
finding stuff and you'll havethis massive, you know it's
almost like a phone book butit's definitely a coffee table

(01:08:01):
book and it'll be maybe a dozendifferent manga in one chapter
of each thing.
So, like when you go out andbuy a tankoban, that's five
chapters.
You're looking at about fivemonths worth of, you know, say,
shonen Jump, because we know it.
Even trying to find stuff, Iwas going over a Battle Angel
Alita title last year and wasstruggling.

(01:08:26):
I thought it was cool, becausethat is Kodansha as well.
They are releasing it digitallybut they are not translating it
.
So I think if there is a levelof popularity with something
like global comics, that maybe,uh, that would encourage them to
invest more in translation, because, beyond the couple of

(01:08:49):
issues that I had, if I wantedto read more I had to read
scanlations.
I literally it was just likebeing a child again.
I had to go to a forum to findscanlations of this manga.

Speaker 3 (01:09:03):
Preach it, brother.
And to Corey's point that isthe other hurdle when it comes
to having manga digital is thatyou know, some series are out of
print, long out of print orvery expensive, or have never
been translated, and I think Iread an article earlier this
year about how a few differentmanga publishers are investing

(01:09:26):
heavily in AI to help themovercome just the manpower
required to translate a lot oftheir old stories.
Corey, you might appreciatethis, but like Nako Irasawa,
who's one of our favorite mangacreators ever his stuff I
believe that he's got a contractin place I don't know if it's

(01:09:47):
him per se or Kodansha that hisstuff does not get a digital
release.
You cannot find his stuffdigital because stuff does not
get a digital release, like youcannot find his stuff digital
because he does not want itreleased digital.
So there's a lot of differenthurdles that come with trying to
have manga accessible digital.
I think this is a step in theright direction that a Japanese
company is working with anAmerican company to provide this
to the masses.

Speaker 1 (01:10:07):
Well, you were talking about the AI thing,
because I know on the film end, obviously when it comes to
translating and when it comes todistribution, there's a whole
lot of infighting.
And just on the English side, botter, you've spoken with many
creators who've talked aboutthat, but I earlier no, last

(01:10:29):
year it took like a year for meto get a DVD that had been
waiting on, uh, but it was ofthree shin common or three
common writer movies, and thereason it took so long the guy
it's a one dude runs thiscompany and he released a video
and he's like look, I just wantto like break down how this
process works so that y'all areon the same level as me.

(01:10:51):
He's like these Japanesecompanies.
The reason why this stuff is sohard to get over here is because
they don't care.
It's already made money ormaybe not made money, so they do
not care about distributing, distributing it globally.
So they want someone else tocome in if you're an
english-speaking audience, sayan american single dude to hire

(01:11:15):
people to get it translated, sothat the company's not actually
footing the bill on somethingthat, again, may or may not have
been very popular.
Uh, so, with something likeglobal comics, hopefully that
could maybe encourage.
I mean, we've already we've gotcrunchy roll.
You've already mentioned acouple of the ones that are
putting out stuff, but hopefullythe japanese can see that there

(01:11:37):
is a market for a lot of thisstuff, that maybe, if they foot
however many thousands you knowhundreds of thousands it takes
for the series to be properlytranslated, scanned, all that
stuff, uh, you know, maybe theycould get something from it.

Speaker 3 (01:11:53):
Phil Eric lightning round question.
What is the last manga you'veread or what is your favorite
manga you've ever read?

Speaker 2 (01:12:00):
This is a way more difficult question to answer for
Eric than it is for me.

Speaker 4 (01:12:04):
Yeah, I was going to say, Phil's probably
straightforward.

Speaker 1 (01:12:07):
Eric can't read.
We know that.

Speaker 2 (01:12:08):
Yeah, first off, eric can't read, that's why you guys
have my Patreon.

Speaker 3 (01:12:13):
You guys are Eric can't read.
We know that.
Yeah, first off, eric can'tread, so for me.
That's why you guys have aPatreon.
You guys are paying for readingclasses for Eric.

Speaker 2 (01:12:17):
That's what it's for Help a child read Do a ligno.

Speaker 3 (01:12:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:12:21):
The most recent I've read is Dauntedon.
That's the one I'm currentlyreading right now, and then the
one that's my favorite isChainsaw man, I mean right now.
And then the one that I that'smy favorite is chainsaw man.
I mean, I have chainsaw manstuff all over this office.
I have a chainsaw man tattoo,so that's the one that I I like
the most.
Um, this is a really cool.
I'll let eric go in a second, but this is a really cool app.
I actually downloaded it whileyou were talking about it,
because it just does remind meof the shonen jump app, eric,

(01:12:43):
which I'm sure you were going tobring up.
So I have realized I am I dolike with manga specifically
having a physical copy.
I will read it more if I have aphysical copy in my hand than I
will digitally, but this isreally cool.
Like I said, I downloaded thisas you brought it up.
But, yeah, eric, what's yoursas you look back at your library

(01:13:04):
there?
Yeah, it's tough.

Speaker 4 (01:13:05):
The library back there there is.
They're all up there.
Okay, yeah, there's a ton ofvolume ones, honestly.
There's a ton of volume ones,honestly.
There's a couple.
There's a lot of really goodones.
What have I read recently?
So I recently had gotten intoDondedon as well.
There was also one I hadstarted that I need to pick back

(01:13:27):
up, called Kagerou Bachi.

Speaker 3 (01:13:29):
Oh, I am reading that on the Shonen Jump app.

Speaker 4 (01:13:33):
And that is a fire series, it's it's cool, it's
gonna when it when they animatethat that shit's gonna be sick
like I like.
I like the, the whole deal withthe sword and everything like
it's very it's very demon slayercoded as far as what I think
it's gonna look like eric.

Speaker 3 (01:13:47):
I like being that uh, grouchy uppity snob, that's
like.
I read it.
I already read it.
I don't already read it.
I don't need to watch it.
I don't need to watch it.
Honestly, it's not a big dealin the manga, by the way.

Speaker 4 (01:13:57):
I will say I did enjoy my read through of Kaiju
number eight, so bring in thatback full circle.
But yeah, no, like I'vedefinitely.
If I got to pick one, it's oneof my favorite anime as well,
which is Kageyama.
Love is War, so that's onethat's up there, rom-com.
Yeah, and it's also one of myfavorite anime.

Speaker 3 (01:14:18):
Take that, Phil Eric, you have answers I have.

Speaker 4 (01:14:21):
I was ready.

Speaker 3 (01:14:22):
Locked and loaded.

Speaker 1 (01:14:23):
You just picked titles that can be found on
Netflix right now Listen.

Speaker 2 (01:14:34):
What Botter just said , though it is nice knowing,
like because you know the thechainsaw man movie comes out
soon and I'm like I know already.

Speaker 3 (01:14:38):
I already know what happens you bitches and chainsaw
man is a good read too, and youknow I was outstanding too, so
yeah, yeah, the approach tomanga too is is interesting when
you look at some of thesecompanies, because they don't
make money off of the they, theydon't make a lot of money off

(01:14:59):
of the manga, it themselves.
When it becomes an anime and itbecomes, you know, when there's
merch involved and those movies, that's when it becomes, you
know, profitable for them.
The manga, the, the uh,anthologies, that you'll find
the stories, you'll find aShonen Jumps or Young Magazine
like that is them kind of liketesting the waters, like hey, if
this is a big enough, ifthere's a big enough audience
here, then we move it toTonkoban.

(01:15:21):
If the Tonkoban sell well, well, clearly we got to get this
shit animated.
So it's interesting to see Ithink they call it a reverse
waterfall or a waterfall effectwhen you look at the manga anime
pipeline, you know they startvery small, you know.
That's why Shonen Jump, themagazines were, like, you know,

(01:15:41):
very cheap paper, like thenewspaper print in this black
and white.
They're not trying to spend abunch of money on these stories,
they're trying to see whichones really kept, which ones are
worth the investment.
So I've been really been in thismindset of understanding manga
and I think it goes back to whatwe talked about with the K-pop
Demon Hunters, is that we'reseeing the accessibility for

(01:16:04):
these things, the transparencyit's here, it's in full force.
Crunchyroll, I think, had ainsane surge during, like the
lockdown.
Manga really blew up.
Anime, I should say, reallyblew up.
And then hearing cory say, likeyou know, they're not willing
to spend, like you know, thevery bare minimum or you know,
on this stuff, it's interestingto see what they will and what

(01:16:25):
they won't, and I think manga isstill like an uphill battle for
it to be very, totallyaccessible.
Um, which maybe brings me to mynext topic, unless we wanted to
spin the wheel for just one no,no, no.

Speaker 2 (01:16:35):
I was gonna let you transition to your next one
anyway, because, yeah, no,you're gonna go to, you're gonna
go to your double header.

Speaker 4 (01:16:40):
I will say though that uh, if you guys were
interested, it's getting evencrazier with crunchyroll.
I'll save us the did not.
Uh, that didn't make the cut.
Did you know that you couldwatch Crunchyroll on Delta
Airlines now?
Whoa.
So, it's like a thing that theyoffer.

Speaker 1 (01:16:54):
Do you need a subscription or?

Speaker 4 (01:16:57):
No, it'll just be on, it'll be available.

Speaker 1 (01:16:59):
And they'll be like a catalog of anime.

Speaker 2 (01:17:01):
I just can't wait for the stewardess to walk up while
I'm watching the first episodeof Dantanon.
And how, yeah, yeah, reallyquick, I think.

Speaker 3 (01:17:09):
I figured out the perfect Weight Watchers field
trip.
We all book a flight.
Delta flight from Jax to Tampa, just so we can watch
Crunchyroll on the plane whileeating our BJ.

Speaker 2 (01:17:24):
I love it I am taking that flight from Tampa to
Jacksonville wait, really that'ssuch a waste of gas.
Listen we're not going to getinto generational trouble.

Speaker 3 (01:17:35):
Okay, okay.
Even Taylor Swift just heardthat and she's like, wow, yeah,
I know what a waste of gas, whata waste of fuel.

Speaker 2 (01:17:46):
But I've taken that flight and I remember because I
had a regular iPod and I think Iwould listen to two songs and
they're like everyone.

Speaker 3 (01:17:57):
Please, uh, turn off all electronic devices as we
descend into Jacksonville.
I've had longer sneezes in thatflight.
Okay, moving on, and in asimilar uh vein, my next topic
also deals with, uh digitalcomics, and that is the
announcement that webtoon anddisney have teamed up to
reformat and offer originalstories based on disney comic

(01:18:18):
property.
So we're talking about, obviously, their marvel stuff.
You know disney owns marvel.
It has the star wars property.
It also has, uh, some 20thcentury properties as well.
So what this means is and I'massuming we all know what
webtoons is right, it's like oneof the largest.
I think it's safe to say it isthe largest uh digital comic
subscription uh platform orservice.

(01:18:38):
Um, it started out.
I forget when it started out,but it started out mainly
catered to hosting like uh,manga as well as manhwa, which
is like the korean version ofmanga, but it quickly obviously
opened up.
They've done partnerships uhwebtoons has with dc comics.
Uh, they had the very popularwayne family adventures hosted

(01:18:59):
on webtoons, which was likestupid successful.
But they've also worked withdark horse.
They've done uh archie comicsas well in idw.
Well, it's now disney's turn, pardon me, to get in on the fun.
So they recently announced apartnership where Webtoons will
be taking certain existing comictitles, such as Spider-Man,

(01:19:19):
some Avengers comics from 2012,some Star Wars comics, some
Alien comics, some old Disneycomics, reformatting them into
the vertical scroll as well, asthey'll be working on making
original stories for the uhformat and the platform as well.
Now marvel, or disney, which ismarvel in this case has their

(01:19:40):
own uh digital comic app.
It's called the marvelunlimited app.
That's been around for a longtime.
I've been a annual subscriberfor like years now and I've
slowly watched them offer uhvertical comics and they call it
uh.
The marvel infinite comics iswhat they call their vertical
scroll comics on that app and Isafe to say it's because of the

(01:20:03):
success and popularity ofwebtoons that they copied that
idea.
Well, now marvel is just like.
Well, disney is like hey, let'shost some of our stuff on
webtoons because they've alreadygot a lot of subscribers.
It it's popular as hell.
You know, we can cater andmaybe grab the attention of
folks that are going on therefor other stuff.
So it's showing me that thatDisney and Marvel are trying to

(01:20:25):
be where, you know, people whoare reading comics are, and in
this case, like I said, manga ishuge, is huge, you know.
I think american comics is isin an interesting point where
they need to bring in new blood.
They need to bring in freshblood.
They need to bring in a youngeraudience and most of the
younger audience is into animeand manga, so they need to be on
webtoons to have that presencethere.

(01:20:46):
Um, and I gotta say, as someonethat's been reading, uh, digital
comics for a time, the verticalscroll takes some getting used
to, especially when you'rereading something like a
traditional Spider-Man comicthat's been reformatted.
So it's interesting to see howthey tackle, like the panels,
the gutters and like thesethings.
These, you know, just theformat and structure of a
traditional comic now beingconverted for, you know,

(01:21:10):
vertical scrolling.
But it makes a lot of sense, right, like how many of us?
You know we, all of us spend somuch time on our phones it, you
know it's interesting for themto offer that as an additional
form of entertainment that nowyou can, you know, read a comic
book the same way that you wouldscroll social media.
So, yeah, so I guess myquestion for the group is what

(01:21:30):
is your familiarity orinteraction with webtoons?
Have you guys ever gone onwebtoon or do you guys have a
series that you followed?

Speaker 2 (01:21:37):
I have not, but you know obviously very familiar
with what they are and theirpopularity.
And I will say, just looking atthe article that you had
brought up here, this artworkfor this, as old as time, uh,
twisted tail, this beauty andthe beast One, looks really cool
, eric.
I don't know if you have thearticle, but it reminds me of
the Alice in Wonderland gameFrom back in the day.

(01:21:59):
But that, I mean, this issomething that like, like I said
, just alternate stories Withinthese universes Is also
something that very muchInterests me.
So, yeah, not too much Ihaven't read any myself but
certainly, again, familiaritywith their, with their rise in
popularity, eric, what about you?

Speaker 4 (01:22:17):
yeah, I was.
I was just checking and correctanybody.
Correct me if I'm wrong, if youknow these properties, but I'm
pretty sure both of these camefrom webtoons.
So the first one is tower ofgod.
Um, I do believe that isaccurate and they did a
crunchyyroll adaptation of that.
And then, I believe, isn't sololeveling also a big webtoon
thing?

Speaker 3 (01:22:38):
Am I wrong?

Speaker 4 (01:22:39):
Does that count?
It might.

Speaker 1 (01:22:43):
I know Lore Olympus and it's not from this site, but
One Punch man.
Originally started as a webtoonat least.
Oh, really Did not know that.
I know Lore Olympus is like.

Speaker 3 (01:22:53):
Lore, olympus is the big one that comes to mind.
How to Hide the Emperor's Childis another big one.
I mean there's been a lot ofbig franchises that have come
out of Webtoon.
I mean I'm on the website rightnow and I see the banner for
Disney, marvel and Star Wars.
It in Star Wars it says comingsoon to Webtoon.

(01:23:14):
So it's interesting to see thempromote that.
But I mean you look at some ofthese views.
I'm on the popular series bycategory To womb.
It no longer concerns.
I've never read it but it's got44 million views.
Another one here has 24 millionviews, like Webtoons has.
It's interesting to see acompany like Global Comics
embrace manga by bringing inKodansha and then a company like
you know established companylike DC and Marvel you know to

(01:23:37):
be like hey, we got to get withthis.
You know webtoons thing.
You know where the manga is at.
So very interesting to see someof these shifts.
You know follow like this thenew digital trend.

Speaker 2 (01:23:48):
But you are right, Eric Solo leveling is a South
Korean webtoon.

Speaker 3 (01:23:52):
Oh, it did Okay, there you go Okay.

Speaker 1 (01:23:55):
Cool.
Yeah, I'm seeing Cyberpunk and,oh my God, the Last Ronin on
here, the TMNT, the Last Ronin.

Speaker 3 (01:24:05):
Exactly Another hit series that came out of IDW in
2020.
Huge, I mean.
It was like one of thebest-selling comics of that year
.
Now it's got a vertical edition, a version of it, I think you
know, and at the same time, it'slike it doesn't.
If you're someone that likesthe traditional comic book
format, it's always going to bethere.

(01:24:26):
It came out as that first, butthis is a an additional way to
like bring in some new blood.
You know folks that are alreadyon here that might want to.
You know I've always wanted tocheck out tmnt here.
It is on webtoon in a formatthat you know I read all my
other stuff in, so why not?

Speaker 1 (01:24:40):
and to answer your question.
I, uh, I never I've not been onwebtoons, but I'm aware of it
solely because of lore olympus.
I have a friend who's obsessedwith it and I got to see some of
the art and it's like, oh wow, this is genuinely good.
And what really surprised mewas when I was at barnes and

(01:25:01):
noble, when I worked there, like2021, 2022, um, we had two
hardback collections, with athird one on the way.
I, I think the third onereleased right around the time
that store closed, but it was.
It was really cool to see, uh,again kind of coming from like
the, the manga thing where it'slike, okay, I'm just going to

(01:25:22):
post this, um, and it's not.
I was always kind of againstwebtoon stuff.
Um, I, I think I have been onthis site, like back at its
inception.
Uh, inception and a lot of thestuff on there was just not good
.
I probably browsed it for likefive minutes and left.
But, like, lore Olympus isreally good.
There are people out there whohave really good products and

(01:25:45):
they're just waiting to getpicked up and like right now you
can only find nine chapters ofLore Olympus and that is
probably because they have adeal with someone else and had
to like remove it from Webtoonsor something.

Speaker 3 (01:26:01):
I think Webtoons also has a system for like paywall
too, where it's like hey, we'llgive you a free but the rest you
got to get signed up.

Speaker 4 (01:26:11):
Yeah, that's how they get you.
That's how they get you.

Speaker 3 (01:26:15):
And those are my digital comics book stories.

Speaker 4 (01:26:17):
Hell, yeah.
Well, we wouldn't expectanything less from you, Botter,
and you brought it to the table,Phil.
I believe this is the part ofthe episode where we didn't make
the cut Botter.
I just want to ask were those?

Speaker 1 (01:26:29):
the only stories you had.

Speaker 4 (01:26:30):
Did you have any other quick hitters to throw out
there?

Speaker 3 (01:26:34):
No, nothing that is quick, I did.
I'm looking at my show notes,my outline, because that's how
much I respect you guys.
I came through with an outline, that's right, we don't even do
that.

Speaker 2 (01:26:43):
We ain't going to give you one, I love that you
both said it at the same time.

Speaker 3 (01:26:47):
I'm just going to say the headline and we don't have
to dwell on them anymore.
I was for what didn't make thecut.
Marvel Comics announcesPredator Badlands sequel comic.
So if you've been watchingPredator Badlands, they've got a
sequel comic, which I'mnoticing more sequel comics
coming out for things like forfranchises.
I think there is a Game ofThrones without a video game.

(01:27:10):
I think there was a video game.
Was it a game of thrones or isthat a video game?
I think there was a video game, but more and more uh tv series
are utilizing the medium ofcomics to tell you know, like
that side story or a prequelthat they don't have.
You know that they couldn't fitwithin the show itself.
So, uh, predator badlands isdoing that, with marvel
releasing a prequel comic, another one that didn't make the
cut.
I was going to talk about theupcoming marvel and dc crossover

(01:27:33):
that's taking place uh, thenext couple months.
Uh, marvel is putting outdeadpool meets, uh, batman, and
then dc is putting out theinverse batman meets deadpool
and within each one of theseissues there's a bunch of uh
mini stories within.
Said, I think it's gonna belike a 60 or 70 page comic that
the main story is batman anddeadpool crossover, and then

(01:27:54):
you've got crossovers of likegreen arrow and daredevil, um,
uh, wonder woman and, uh,captain marvel.
So both companies are comingcorrect.
This is like the first timethat both publishers have done a
an official crossover in since20 or was it 2004?
It was like it's been a longtime, like 20 years, so it's a
very big deal.

(01:28:14):
These books are going to selllike massive.
I mean they're, they're gonna,they're going to sell huge.
I was going to talk a littlebit about those backup stories
didn't make the cut and I thinkthat's all I had, just those two
uh stories.

Speaker 4 (01:28:24):
Nice nice, I know those are.
Uh, we're.
We're going to be covering preyhere on the podcast in november
leading up Badlands, so we'rereally excited about that.
It's cool to see that it'sgetting a sequel comic.
But yeah, the Batman andDeadpool stuff is super cool.
I think there's such a futureahead of us when it comes to
film, because I think down theroad at some point we are going

(01:28:47):
to get something.
I don't know how it'll happen, phil, but I can see it now that
James Gunn is leading thecavalry over there has that
marvel relationship like we'recloser than ever in my opinion
of the reality of a marvel dc I,I totally see you next year
when doomsday shits the bed andthey panic you mean?

Speaker 3 (01:29:06):
you mean you mean panic and just get desperate for
money.
Yeah, at some point they'regonna have to give us what we
want.
Honestly, I'm shocked.

Speaker 4 (01:29:12):
I'm genuinely shocked .
They have not paid a ransom forspider-man yet like it's.
It's honestly kind of crazy.
I think it'll probably happenafter, beyond, the spider-verse
comes out, which means it'llnever happen.
Which means that, yeah, becausethat's never that is uh never
coming out.

Speaker 2 (01:29:30):
Cory, did you have any uh any stories that uh were
on the cutting room floor?

Speaker 1 (01:29:34):
yeah, so the the super short one, uh, was the
announcement of the godzillaminus one sequel, um, that could
be out as early as next year, which?

Speaker 2 (01:29:45):
is insane.
Yeah, they put out.
It's like five seasons ofstranger things in 20 years and
we going to get two minus onemovies.

Speaker 1 (01:29:54):
But I feel like they knew, like the director knew
where he wanted to take things.
So as soon as they were like, yeah, sure, go ahead and do it,
he's like, all right, I'malready halfway there.
But I'm excited for thatbecause I really want to know
where they're going to go.
The end of the movie like asknow guy who's obsessed with the
franchise the very end of thatmovie is like, okay, where are

(01:30:15):
we taking this?
I have so many ideas in mindand I want all of them to be
blown out of the water.
But the other thing which youcan also go enjoy right now is
alien earth.
It's very fun.
It's not, um, I don't know it's.
It's not as epic as like Alien, aliens, romulus, because it is

(01:30:36):
a serialized show.
It's a little bit more toneddown, but it's.
There's still plenty of islands, there's still a lot of story
that's being developed and rightnow that Sid the Sloth meme is
driving a massive wedge in Philand I's friendship, because
every time I talk about Alien hejust posts that again and again

(01:30:58):
.

Speaker 4 (01:31:00):
Phil, can you go through the trouble on the video
version of this episode ofslowly fading?
I usually don't do any editingfor this episode, but I will.

Speaker 3 (01:31:08):
Can you mark it?

Speaker 1 (01:31:09):
Actually every time.

Speaker 2 (01:31:09):
Corey talks this entire episode.
I'm going to just fade it in.
Just have.

Speaker 4 (01:31:13):
Sid.
This locked in the background.

Speaker 1 (01:31:14):
It'll just be in like different pockets, but yeah.
So tonight, like right now, once we're done with this, I'll
probably go fire up episode four.
It's going to be eight episodestotal but only taking seven
weeks to release because theydid a one and two drop on the
first night.
Yeah, so, I want to know whereit goes.

(01:31:35):
I'm I love the alien franchise,you know it's good and it's bad
.
I'll take all of it.
But this was really coolbecause I don't know, I've
literally no one has ever beenable to sit down weekly and
watch an alien thing.
You get one weekend and that'sit.

(01:31:57):
It is kind of fun to have thatlittle bit of camaraderie in
some discords where it's like ohhey, did you see it?
What did you think about it?
I think that's something that'sfun to be able do, uh, and just
get kind of a different take.
You know it feels safer thanhaving released another movie so
soon after romulus, you know.

Speaker 4 (01:32:18):
so yeah, and romulus was good as somebody who doesn't
.
Who's not the biggest alien fanor predator fan?
I'm finding myself, like in2025, being excited for what the
future holds for both of thosefranchises and you did.

Speaker 1 (01:32:31):
You say that you hadn't seen Prey because you're
covering it.

Speaker 4 (01:32:34):
So I have seen it, but this year.
So I saw it and I needed tocheck it out to see if Phil
would end up either enjoying itA and B.
Can he watch it?
Because, there's typicallystuff that he can't watch, so I
had to vet it and it passed thevetting.
It was very good.
It was very good.
It was very good.
Uh, the fact that it didn't geta theatrical release possibly a

(01:32:56):
crime.

Speaker 1 (01:32:56):
Yeah, that's a crime.
Yeah, yeah, I would have gone,cause I, I think I watched it.
It was either two days in a rowthat's another one that I
watched like within a week, uh,but I might have watched on the
night that it released, and so Iwatched it at like four in the
morning and Brenda was madbecause she's like you know, I

(01:33:18):
want to watch it.
I was like, literally, it's I'mI'm exhausted, but I can't
sleep.
I got to do something, uh, andso I think I watched it.
Yeah, I think I watched ittwice within a 24 hour period,
maybe even 12 hours, and it wasworth it both times, and I might
have watched it a third timefor a podcast.
So, yeah, praise, really goodI'm.
I'm hyped for where they'regoing with that stuff and, to

(01:33:41):
rep short box once again, I canjust press a button anyways
please, yeah, the you the heroescon panel.
Um, one of the guys was sayinghe's like everything about the
predator and aliens in themarvel universe is gold and I
need to check that out.

(01:34:02):
So it's.

Speaker 3 (01:34:03):
It's a really good couple of years for like alien
and predator yeah, highlyrecommend the uh, there is a
predator and spider-man,predator versus spider-Man or
Spider-Man versus Spider-Man,one of those comic series that
came out this year and I thinkthere's already a sequel.
I think it's like Kraven theHunter and Predator, but very
good, very graphic.
All right, I will say Marvelvery quickly.

(01:34:25):
Marvel, or Disney, now owns20th Century Fox.
One of the things they did wasdecide, hey, we're going to put
out comics with these properties, but they're going to be
branded 20th Century, so there'slike a banner or the logo on
said comic and they are not shyabout showing you all the gore
and bloodshed.
Okay, so that Spider-Man versusPredator comic is intense.

Speaker 2 (01:34:47):
I saw Alien versus Predator 2004.
Isn't that?

Speaker 4 (01:34:53):
No, no, no, that's not, although we're very close
to that happening.

Speaker 2 (01:34:55):
They're friends.
That's what I'm saying.
I've already seen it they'rebuddies.

Speaker 4 (01:34:59):
I don't think it's as canon as the Godzilla stories
we were talking about earlier.
Phil, do you have any?
Didn't make the cut, and then Iwill go through our Discord
roundup.

Speaker 2 (01:35:10):
I have two really quick ones.
The first one cory and Iactually talked about this the
other day is I was gonna go seeprimitive war over the weekend.
I was pretty excited about it.
You know, a new dinosaur moviewas released by, uh, an
independent studio, um, it onlyhad a very limited release, um,
and and then I found it over theweekend.
They straight up like stoleassets from the Jurassic series,

(01:35:32):
used a lot of AI, and I'm justlike, well, there goes that
dream, like I felt like I feltlike that went out the window.
So yeah, just for those of youthat maybe haven't seen it yet,
I think about renting it.
I was pretty disappointed tohear that, but you know, I
honestly wasn't too surprised,unfortunately.
But the other story that Ireally grappled with that I

(01:35:52):
thought I might talk about wasLego Batman Legacy of the Dark
Knight being announced, which isgoing to be an open-world Lego
game with the Dark Knight, batman, with the Arkham series,
combat in it and it looks.

Speaker 1 (01:36:06):
I was just going to ask if they were basing it on
Arkham.

Speaker 2 (01:36:08):
Incredible.
I really feel like the Legogames peaked back in the Star
Wars, anna Jones, batman days inthe early 2000s and this looks
like a return to form.
So very excited to jump backinto the Lego games.
Man.
I will preorder this as a36-year-old man.

Speaker 3 (01:36:26):
I can't wait for that .
Look, I you know, like thinkingabout the Arkham games.
It's just how violent thosegames are, like just how much of
an ass whooping you could puton like just the lowest common
denominator thug.
Sending a man to the 50 hitcombo, sending him to the
hospital, but it's like well, now we're talking about Legos.

(01:36:47):
And it's like well, does thatmean like the handcuffs come off
, because there's like you know, you're not showing blood.

Speaker 2 (01:36:53):
Imagine like a bunch of Legos just breaking off, just
pieces all over the place.

Speaker 3 (01:36:57):
Really quick, phil.
I heard that the map in thatLego Batman game coming out is
supposed to be even bigger thanthe Arkham City map which was
already a colossal game.

Speaker 2 (01:37:07):
I'll tell you what If they animate the Bane plane
scene, I'll scream from therooftops.
That'd be legit.

Speaker 3 (01:37:18):
Hey, really quick, can I say Phil and Eric, I was a
little disappointed today.
I went on the Wayfarer podcastpage and I was just trying to
get caught up.
I was like, oh, what have theycovered?
I know you guys cover videogames a lot and maybe it's
because I'm playing thisparticular game and you guys
aren't covering the game I'mplaying that I'm like, come on,
guys, but I was surprised thatyou guys haven't covered.

(01:37:39):
Have you guys covered or talkedabout Claire Obscure,
expedition 33?

Speaker 4 (01:37:43):
Well, it's so funny that you mentioned that it's
actually going to be next, nextmonth's episode.

Speaker 2 (01:37:49):
I can't wait.
Okay, deal, and as a WeightWatcher, you will get it early,
you will.

Speaker 4 (01:37:54):
So Patreon has been very well represented here, but
we really wanted to do itquicker.
It's a game that just like it'slong, like it's a long long
game and you kind of got to takeyour time with it.

Speaker 2 (01:38:07):
And I suck at it.
Phil's really bad at it.

Speaker 4 (01:38:10):
Phil will likely not beat it by the time we record,
but I have already beaten it soI'm very excited to get into it.
Okay, but I'm hoping he'll getsomewhere into the middle of Act
2, and I think at that point hecan pretty much say everything
he needs to say about the game.

Speaker 3 (01:38:27):
That's not story related.
Deal, deal, I can't wait.
All right, I am so glad Ibrought that up.
I'm very excited.
I think I'm going to go eat abox of donuts as a Weight
Watcher.
Is that how it works?

Speaker 4 (01:38:36):
Yes it is If you don't gain 10 pounds a month
then, it's not working.
Lizzie's on the way so don'tworry.

Speaker 3 (01:38:44):
We're watching our weight go up on this Patreon,
right?
Because we we eating good.
That's what it is.
I think there's so much youguys can do with this.
Like, hey, we're eating good, all right.

Speaker 2 (01:38:52):
We're watching our weight go up.
Eric, what about you?
Or are you just going to gostraight into the Discord
roundup, because we need to getto our game?
Yeah, we need to get to ourgame.

Speaker 4 (01:39:01):
I mixed it yeah, I know, I mixed mine into the
Discord roundup.
No-transcript, you do not haveto speak to each one Whatever

(01:39:26):
comes to mind, make a note, saythis one word and then just
bullet point it for me.
I'm going to run it down, though, so I may be talking for
the next three minutes.
A couple quick hitters.
These are really pointlessstories.
Robert Pattinson and MattReeves the Batman Part 2,
apparently, will finally beginfilming in the spring.
According to Warner BrothersDiscovery Lie Shameik Moore

(01:39:47):
reveals he has begun voicerecording for Beyond the
Spider-Verse lie Spider-Man, aSpider-Punk animated feature.
Yeah, well, those ones were bad.
We bring those up it feels likeevery three months and we find
out.
It just keeps getting delayed.

Speaker 3 (01:40:02):
It's definitely a Nothing Burger headline, for
sure.

Speaker 4 (01:40:03):
Nothing Burger Spider-Punk animated feature
though uh, daniel kaluuya willbe in development at sony so
we'll never see it, but deadlinehad learned that and shared it
with shrek 5 talking aboutdelays was delayed.
It will release in 2027disappointing.
Michael bay is apparently intalks to return for another

(01:40:24):
transformers.
Nobody asked for that Exactly.
Stop it Not one person askedfor it?

Speaker 1 (01:40:32):
What was the inspiration for the balls?
The balls.

Speaker 4 (01:40:36):
He's going to bring them back.
He's going to bring them back.
Still, in movie news, zackCrager is going to be directing
his Resident Evil film.
Apparently, it's going to be anoriginal story in the universe
and not include characters fromthe games.
Do with that as you will.
And on the movie side of things, uh, there is a film that's

(01:40:56):
going to be coming out calledrental family, a trailer with
brendan fraser.
Uh, the film follows astruggling actor who is hired as
a token american guy for ajapanese rental family company
in tokyo.
Looks both hilarious andprobably devastating.

Speaker 1 (01:41:11):
I'm excited about that.

Speaker 3 (01:41:12):
Holy shit, he's got more.
He's got TV news.

Speaker 4 (01:41:15):
That was just movies.
On the TV side, hulu isofficially ending.
Disney is announcing a fullintegration with Disney+.
Apple TV Plus is increasing to$12.99 a month.
I know Phil is devastated aboutthat.
The Office spinoff the Paper isgoing to pivot to a binge drop
release.
All 10 episodes are droppingSeptember 4th.

Speaker 1 (01:41:36):
Will it be as good?
They know it sucks.

Speaker 4 (01:41:39):
They know it's probably not, but September 4th
we'll find out.
And Nicolas Cage talks to Starin the fifth season of HBO's
True Detective.

Speaker 3 (01:41:50):
I've never watched that series, but I can only
imagine that show is stillairing.

Speaker 4 (01:41:53):
Wow, I can only imagine how left it's gone,
because a Nick Cage season isgoing to be wild.
And then, on the TV side ofthings, before our wrap-up is
over with a couple gaming news, florence Pugh was apparently in
talks to play Abby in the Lastof Us, hbo, but turned it down
due to scheduling conflicts.
So if you could hate, thesecond season more I didn't hate

(01:42:14):
it.

Speaker 3 (01:42:15):
I didn't hate it, but it was pretty bad.

Speaker 4 (01:42:18):
Yeah, it was pretty bad.
Florence Pugh.
It would have been nuts Wouldhave been nuts.
But final news Team Cherryannounced the release date for
hollow night silk song.
It's real, ladies and gentlemen.
September 4th as well, Ibelieve.

(01:42:38):
Uh, it's going to be out.
Red octane games, the rhythmgame studio led by veterans who
helped scale guitar hero and DJhero.
Apparently, a new rhythm gameis going to be announced later
this year.
Super exciting If you're a fanof that genre of gaming.
And then the last, last lastthing for the discord roundup.
We had a lot of fun talkingabout the disaster that happened
in tampa, florida and nationalgaming expo, where one of the uh

(01:42:59):
guests, the g uh, one of thegta guests that was there for
the con, said uh, they put thecon in comic-con.

Speaker 1 (01:43:06):
So if you missed that story, pretty wild, but uh yeah
it was a fire fest ofconventions the fire fest of
conventions is the way I woulddescribe it, that's our discord
roundup.

Speaker 4 (01:43:18):
So, botter, is there any pick one, pick or pick two,
whatever you want, anything youwant to say eric, we've been
recording so long.

Speaker 3 (01:43:26):
My light backlight just went out.

Speaker 4 (01:43:28):
I'm like what the hell?

Speaker 3 (01:43:29):
happened.
No, eric, you did such a great.
The biggest takeaway you know,uh every, you know godzilla news
aside, dc james gun news aside,uh, eric, the money you paid
for that new mic well worth it.

Man, dude, I've been playingwith this fucking Rodecaster.
You sound good.
I don't know how I recordedwithout it, are you sure?

Speaker 3 (01:43:51):
it's Phil that's doing the voice acting, because
I don't think you might get afuture in it.

Speaker 4 (01:43:56):
I'm going to take your job, Phil.

Speaker 2 (01:43:57):
I tried to get him to take an acting class with me.

Speaker 3 (01:44:04):
He didn't to it Perfection.

Speaker 4 (01:44:05):
Oh yeah, hell yeah, corey, anything to add?
Phil, anything to add?

Speaker 1 (01:44:08):
Brendan Fraser can do no wrong.

Speaker 2 (01:44:11):
Keep Shameik Moore away from Haley Steinfeld.
Yeah, the only other thing Iguarantee you people guessed the
plot for Shrek 5, and that'swhy they push it back.
I 100% guarantee you peoplebecause people were online
talking about because Zendaya isplaying the daughter and like,
oh, zendaya wants to go off andbe this independent person and
Shrek's gonna be like no, Idon't do, don't, don't go do

(01:44:33):
this donkey and all that shitand like, and they just guessed
what was gonna happen and theyhad to scrap it and redo it.
So yeah, crazy.

your phones for this.
That'll be the easiest way foryou guys to play.

Speaker 1 (01:44:57):
I am going to look over this side Because my phone
is my webcam.

Speaker 2 (01:45:02):

Oh, okay Well you have to put atleast Godzilla.

Speaker 1 (01:49:12):
Yes, come on, godzilla, you have to put minus
one the titular character.

Speaker 2 (01:49:17):
I even gave people an option to just type out
negative and the number one andyou just put minus one.

Speaker 3 (01:49:23):

Yeah, we're on the same.
Okay, cool, because by the timeit stopped me in the middle of
caribbean.

Speaker 4 (01:49:38):
I then realized I had fucked up.

Speaker 3 (01:49:42):
This may be the last month I'm gonna wait.

Speaker 2 (01:49:44):
Wait, what this?
Little boy is on a three-answerstreak and it has a lead 27-27.
Bj Glizzy moves back into.

Speaker 4 (01:49:57):
Yeah, no, for sure, All right.
Next question Puzzle Placethese Jacksonville malls in
order of opening date.

Speaker 2 (01:50:04):
Of course, four malls in Jacksonville being the
Avenues, orange Park, regencySquare and St John's Town Center
.
Try and place them in the orderof opening date.

Speaker 3 (01:50:15):
This is very hard.

Speaker 4 (01:50:18):
We'll see why the fuck would I remember your
mother's birthday?

Speaker 2 (01:50:21):
I will say puzzle is the one that people usually
never get right.
I think we've had very fewpeople do puzzle correctly.

Speaker 1 (01:50:28):
I mean, this is a great question.
Hey, two people got it right.

Speaker 4 (01:50:32):
Oh shit, that was crazy, let's go.
That was a crazy guess I justthrew it up.

Speaker 1 (01:50:39):
I was like my second and third were all wrong.

Speaker 3 (01:50:42):
Just because I know that we got some Jax listeners,
the correct answer Place theseJax listeners.
The correct answer Place theseJaxville malls on order.
Opening date Regency SquareMall, yep, orange Park Mall, the
Avenues and St John's HouseCenter being the newest, most
newest.

Speaker 2 (01:50:55):
Yeah, wow, regency Square Mall opened in the 70s,
which I did not know.
My heart, like legit, skippedWow, it shows.
Yeah, it definitely shows.
That's crazy.

Speaker 3 (01:51:04):
I couldn't remember to put Godzilla in his own movie
title but I apparently know yougot the malls right.

Speaker 4 (01:51:10):
You didn't get the hip hop question, you got the
mall, question I bring backmalls.

Speaker 2 (01:51:15):
I say let's revitalize the mall, I miss it.

Speaker 3 (01:51:19):
I'm going to go to the Avenues Mall this weekend in
your honor there you go, soundsgood, hell yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:51:23):
You walk into that hot topic.

Speaker 3 (01:51:28):
Apparently not enough .
Rito boy Didn't get it right.

Speaker 2 (01:51:31):
Everybody's catching up a little bit.
Let's get to the next question.
Pin your answer, eric.
Damn it.
Which one of these charactersfrom Ted Lasso is named Nate?
Why the fuck?

Your boy knows this there yougo I think it was kind of weird
that they didn't just have youmove the pen instead of the
whole image.
That's a little weird, yeahthat was a weird mechanic.

Speaker 2 (01:52:09):
I've never been the other side.
What do they do?
You gotta move the whole imagetoward the pen.

Speaker 3 (01:52:14):
Why not just drop the pen?

Speaker 1 (01:52:15):
Yeah, when you click it, the image shifts and centers
back on the pen.
That's strange.

Speaker 3 (01:52:19):
Okay, interesting, Alright what two of you got it
right.

Speaker 2 (01:52:22):
We got some movement at the top.
Oh Glizzy, BJ Glizzy in thebuilding.

ready for dinner.
And then also coming off thatJacksonville history.
I cannot.

Speaker 1 (01:53:53):
Look, that was insanely impressive that I got
that correct, that was a high.

Speaker 3 (01:53:57):
I'm kind of blown away.
I missed a Jay-Z question, allright.

Speaker 2 (01:53:59):
Next question we have a quiz who has the most AEW
Women's World Championshipreigns.

Speaker 1 (01:54:04):

Tony Storm has four reigns.
Britt Baker, eric only has one.

Speaker 3 (01:54:24):
Hikaru Shida has three.

Speaker 4 (01:54:27):
I didn't feel good about Britt Baker but, I,
figured she won it at leasttwice so I was like maybe she's
tied.

Speaker 2 (01:54:31):
She just had a really long run, is what it was.

Speaker 4 (01:54:34):
I should have won with Tony.
I just like the alliterationBritt Baker, britt Baker
wrestler and actual dentist inreal life and now just dentist
don't know where she is.

maybe allegedly 20 and eric, wedon't know.

Speaker 3 (01:55:15):
Yeah, we definitely did not do that on some short
box history shit I I won't everforget.

of us myself, ed, Ed, Cesar andAshley when we were all still
recording together that it wasgoing to be unanimous.
That movie sucked.
Yeah, Boy, was I surprised.

Speaker 4 (01:55:37):
It was an even split.
I mean, ashley and Cesar wentto bat for this movie Really,
and I think it was the one timethat I genuinely thought they
might be fucking crazy.

Speaker 2 (01:55:46):
Cesar is fucking crazy.

Speaker 1 (01:55:48):
Eric and.

Speaker 2 (01:55:49):
I disagree quite a bit.

Speaker 3 (01:55:51):
We didn't disagree on this, on Wonder Woman anymore.
I think even Pedro Pascal won'ttake questions about that movie
on the red carpet.

Speaker 4 (01:55:58):
He literally won't go clean shaven because of that
movie anymore.

Speaker 3 (01:56:01):
He's like, I will not do it.
He's literally said it.
Anyways, all right, everybodygot that right.

Speaker 2 (01:56:06):
And we still got a close one, bj Glizzy still at
the top Weight Watcher in second.

Hold up the reward that I'mgonna confiscate?

(02:03:57):
No, but seriously, the range ofquestions kept me on my toes.
That was really good.
That was a good-ass game.

Speaker 2 (02:04:02):
Thank you.
I became, you know, one firstplace.
I didn't win, otherwise itwould have been shit.
But because I won, it was had Ilost.

Speaker 3 (02:04:09):
I would have had different.
No, that was a lot of fun.

Speaker 2 (02:04:12):
But there you go, folks.
What did I miss?
August 2025.
We did it.
Thank you for joining us andfor listening and or watching.
Before we get out of here, Iwant to give our guests the
opportunity to anything thatthey are working on, corey, or
I'll throw it to you firstwhat's going on with Twinby and
what else do you have going onfor the remainder of the year?

Speaker 1 (02:04:30):
Yeah, so stuff I have coming up should be as long as
the schedule is down.
I should actually have VigoDeathstroke Sound, whom you guys
got to meet at the JPU the camp, but I should have him on next
month for a chat about System ofa down, the new metal band.

(02:04:53):
Uh, from our childhood I shouldhave one to two horror episodes
, depending on if cinemavillains can get their shit
together.
Um, I've got, I've got a coupleof things coming up.
Uh, nothing like not a wholelot of hard titles outside of
System of a Down, but I'm reallyhoping to cover the amazing dub

(02:05:15):
of Ghost Stories with CinemaVillains.
If you've never heard of it,you will boy.
It is amazing.
But yeah, I should have acouple things coming out.
I'm hoping to hit 12 episodesthis year.
That might happen, stillcovering Alien Earth, by the way
.
I should be recording on thattomorrow.

Speaker 2 (02:05:33):
And then you're going to have me on to talk about
Jurassic World Evolution 3.
So I cannot wait for thatepisode.
Yeah, might have to do that, and we will see you very soon at
Ocala Comic Con.
Most importantly, Tony's.
So, honestly, don't really carewhat happens the rest of the
weekend.
Botter, what's going on withthe short box, jpu and anything

(02:05:54):
else that you're working onbefore we get out of here?

Speaker 3 (02:05:56):
okay, uh, because I know phil and eric are, uh,
professionals.
They're gonna have links to thepodcast and the show notes and
all that good stuff.
So what I'll say is that, um,apparently I've released way
more than 500 episodes.
And when it comes to the shortbox, if you are a fan of comic
books or comic book culture, oryou just like to hear from

(02:06:17):
creative individuals writers, artists, editors, folks like
that check out the short box.
I do a lot of interviews.
I've got a couple of interviewswith some very talented comic
book writers and artists comingup.
If you'll be at New York ComicCon this year, which takes place
in October I think it's October9th through the 12th this year
I'll be doing a live podcast atNew York Comic Con with some

(02:06:37):
other amazing comic bookpodcasters as well.
It'll be a live panel, a livepodcast.
We're going to have a lot offun.
But in terms of like the shortbox feed, hey, I'm going to
continue cranking out some greatinterviews and spotlights on
comic books, comic news reviewsand interviews.
That's been my thing lately.
So the short box podcast is thebest way to feel like you're at
your local comic shop withoutever leaving the house For an

(02:07:07):
example of some of the topicsthey cover in the most recent
episode, botter speaks with hisguest for about 10 to 15 minutes
on shipping.
You know it's just throwing meoff that cory is talking about
an episode I haven't technically.
Are you talking about the kylestark's episode?
Yeah, oh, yeah, yeah, look, butthat's that's what I'm saying.
Is you know?
I'm talking to these creativeswho are putting in, you know?
Are you know putting in thehard work um to become
independent creators?
So we talk about helpful thingslike how to ship Kickstarter

(02:07:30):
campaigns, which is actually waymore fascinating than it sounds
, trust me.

Speaker 2 (02:07:33):
Yeah, and we have no room to talk either.
We had a five-minuteconversation about fruitcake, I
think, with Bay recently.

Speaker 3 (02:07:41):
Hey, look man, whatever comes up comes up
Exactly.
People come from thepersonality and sometimes it's
talking about some bullshit.
