Speaker 1 (00:10):
Hey, hey, hey.
It's your girl, keisha, and Iwant to welcome you to the
Authentic Life.
It's the podcast where weexplore the art of living
unapologetically.
We are embracing our truths and, if you know me, we are showing
up 100 proof every day.
This topic is so important tome and I want to help all of us
get closer to being OK withliving as our authentic selves

(00:31):
Because, let's be real, when weare our most authentic selves,
everyone gets the best versionof us every time.
So, at the Authentic Life,we're all about being true,
we're living bold and,ultimately, we're trying to
embrace ourselves.
This is a space where we'regoing to keep it real, we're
going to find our voice, butwe're also going to learn how to
navigate life's ups and downswith authenticity, courage and a

(00:54):
sprinkle of Keisha.
So, whether you're here tolearn, you're here to grow or
you're just trying to vibe withyour girl, I am so glad you're
along for the journey.
So let's laugh, let's reflect.
Hey, we may even cry, but we'regonna get real about the
challenges and the joys ofliving the authentic life.
Ready to dive in, let's go.
Hello everyone, and welcome tothe official release of the

(01:25):
Authentic Life.
This is the pre-release episodeto the very first episode that
comes out on December 31st.
This is just giving you alittle bit of taste of the
Authentic Life, but I'm superexcited.
I am Keisha, I am your host andlet me tell you I am beyond
excited to share this momentwith you.
Creating a podcast is not easy.
It takes a lot of work, ittakes a lot of time and, most

(01:49):
importantly, it takes a lot ofpatience to get something like
this put together.
But this podcast has been adream of mine for quite some
time and today it's no longer adream.
It's now a reality.
So can we just take a moment tocelebrate that together, our
reality.
So can we just take a moment tocelebrate that together?

(02:10):
Yes, the authentic life is somuch more than a podcast.
I really don't want this justto be another podcast, right.
For me, this is really about itbeing a movement, a safe space
and a call to action for us allto live boldly, unapologetically
and as our most authenticselves.
So if you're someone who's everfelt the weight of trying to fit
in, the pressure to shrinkyourself into different spaces

(02:31):
and places, or just struggledwith living by someone else's
standard, listen, you are notalone, and this space is for you
.
This is why this space wascreated.
Now let me ask you somethinghave you ever felt like you had
to make yourself smaller just tofit in, just to be around
certain people or to maintainrelationships or friendships?

(02:53):
So if that's you, what's onething you'd do differently if
you weren't weighed down by theexpectations of others?
Now I want you to take a secondto think about it.
Maybe jot it down in a notebookin your phone or just sit with
it for a moment, right, and I'mgoing to give us a little minute
to kind of do some reflectionand think about that.

(03:15):
All right?
So hopefully you have takensome time and you have really
thought about that.
That's going to be the kind ofthing that we're going to do in
this podcast.
So this release episode is allabout welcoming you into this
community and giving you alittle sneak peek of what's

(03:35):
ahead.
But before we dive into theexciting details, I want to take
a moment to reflect and share alittle bit about the journey
that brought us here, because, let's be real, as I mentioned
before, this did not happenovernight and it definitely has
taken some time.
So let's think about the birthof the authentic life.
What inspired the authenticlife?
Well, like many of you, I'vehad moments where I felt stuck,

(03:58):
I felt unseen, I've had toshrink myself, I felt the
pressure to fit into certainspaces and places and really all
of that put me out of alignmentwith my true self.
So over the years, I've triedto learn that living
authentically is the key to notto unlocking my joy, to
unlocking my purpose, tounlocking my peace and really

(04:21):
having some meaningfulrelationships.
So if I think about thispodcast and kind of the stories
and the things that we're goingto talk about, ultimately it's
rooted in my own experiences.
We're going to talk about someof my triumphs, the things that
have gone really well for me,but we're also going to talk
about some lessons.
And, yes, we are going to focuson those failures, right,
because the failures, all ofthose things together, make us

(04:43):
who we are.
Additionally, the authentic lifereally is an extension of my
nonprofit called the AuthenticLife Inc.
Where I really would like toempower women, especially women
of color, to live boldly, totake up space and really thrive
in their spaces and not feellike they have to wear a mask or

(05:05):
shrink themselves.
So, through that work that I'vedone in that space and some of
the coaching that I've done, Irealized how powerful it is to
share our stories and to bevulnerable and to connect on a
deeper level when we're reallythinking about the challenges
that we face every day.
About the challenges that weface every day.

(05:26):
So here we are we're launchingthis podcast as a space to
inspire, challenge and supporteach other.
My goal is very simple reallyit's to help you live
authentically in every area ofyour life, and so that is how
the Authentic Life became to be.
As mentioned, it is rooted froma nonprofit.
I have a newsletter on LinkedIntitled the Authentic Life.

(05:49):
So a lot of what if you followthe newsletter.
A lot of what's in thosenewsletters we'll talk about in
the podcast, amongst otherthings.
But yeah, that's how we started.
So when thinking about that andreally thinking about, okay,
what can we expect from theauthentic life in this podcast,
one of my biggest things that Ireally hope is that this, just

(06:10):
this, just this, just this doesnot become just another
self-help podcast that we reallytake time to deep dive into
real, raw and transformativework of authenticity, right?
So we're going to talk aboutsome of the podcasts and some of
the things that you can expectfrom that, because this isn't

(06:31):
just about being a feel-goodconversation.
It really is about a journeyand how we can grow along that
journey.
So here's the lineup of some ofthe topics we're going to dive
into.
The first one, or one of manytopics, will be around setting
boundaries, and why is it sohard to say no and how can we
protect our peace when trying tomaintain boundaries.

(06:53):
So I will, of course, share alife experience related to that.
What I've learned from thatexperience.
Things like that potentiallybring someone else in to kind of
talk about setting boundaries.
I also make recommendations ofbooks and things like that
potentially bring someone elsein to kind of talk about setting
boundaries.
I also make recommendations ofbooks and things like that that
I've used on my journey oftrying to set boundaries.
Another topic that we will diveinto is around navigating

(07:16):
relationships right.
When we think aboutauthenticity and thinking about
living the authentic life, a lotof times our relationships
impact our ability to do that.
So how do we stay true toourselves while also fostering
the connections with the peoplethat we have in our life?
So I'll talk about some of myaha moments in balancing some of

(07:37):
my relationships and some of myfriendships, but also trying to
balance that with self-respectright, and maintaining my
self-worth while also trying tofoster those connections.
Then we're going to talk aboutthe role of ego.
That is something that I'vebeen talking a lot about with my
therapist, because have youever, like, had something come

(07:57):
up in your life and it's theprinciple of the thing?
Right, it's not the thing youdid, even though the thing that
occurred could have beenegregious and really caused a
problem, but, like, the thingthat is bothering you is the
principle behind the thing.
So it's that ego driven right.

(08:18):
So, really, talking about therole of ego and how to spot when
your ego's in the driver's seatand what to do about it, right?
So how do you manage that?
It's not necessarily aboutgetting rid of the ego, it's
really about managing it, and sowe're going to talk about that,
because that is something thatI've talked a lot about with my
therapist.
And then, most importantly, whenwe're thinking about

(08:40):
authenticity and thinking aboutthe authentic life, it's about
embracing your identity and whoyou are.
So we're going to do someself-reflection, we're going to
do some self-work, right,whether it's cultural, personal
or professional.
We're going to unpack what itmeans to own our story
unapologetically All of thepieces that come to come with us
, all of the trials, all of thetribulations, all of the things.

(09:04):
We are going to work throughthose, because if we don't work
through those, it's going to behard for us to take the mask off
because we're not comfortablewith who we are, so really want
to focus on that.
And so, when thinking aboutthat, have you ever struggled
with boundaries or have you everstruggled with some of the
topics that we've talked aboutin that space?

(09:27):
Right?
And so my hope is that, intalking about these different
topics, that you will send metopics and there be things that
you find me on Instagram, linkedin, all of the places and
we can share and learn together.
But my goal is to also haveguests come on, other everyday
people who are livingauthentically in their own way

(09:48):
and allow them to share theirstories, their strategies and
their insights that will help usall to grow, their strategies
and their insights that willhelp us all to grow.
And you know, I'm going toshare my journey, of course,
because this isn't aboutperfection, it's about progress.
So together we're going tolearn, grow and celebrate each
other and celebrate our progressalong the way.

(10:09):
So why does authenticity matter?
Why is this even a topic?
Why are we talking about that?
Well, here's the thing when welive authentically, we don't
just free ourselves, we inspireothers to do the same.
So if I think about anotherreason as to why I chose to do
this, I speak a lot, I dopresentations, I do keynotes, I

(10:30):
do workshops, I do trainings.
I do all the things, and one ofthe things over the years that
I get, when I go speak andpeople come up and they talk to
you after you speak, it's neverabout my topic.
Sometimes it's about my topic, but most of the time it's about
the fact, especially from women, and in many cases race is not a

(10:53):
factor, it's just various womenwho come up and say I really
appreciate that in thisprofessional setting, you still
are true to you, you still showup authentic, you still embrace
who you are, you don't shrinkyourself in spaces and places in
order to do this job thatthey're going to either get all

(11:15):
of you or none of you right, andso for me, that's extremely
important because, as Imentioned, living authentically
gives other people.
It not only frees you, but itinspires other people to do the
same thing.
And so for me it's like how canI get more people to embrace
that?
Because I know for me it took areally long time for me to get
to a place of being okay?

(11:36):
Is showing up as Keisha andshowing up as much of Keisha as
I could in the spaces that I wasin, without fear of loss of
access or something of something, or that if I showed up as
myself, there was going to besome issue or she's not
professional, how she looks isnot professional, her hair is

(11:57):
not professional Really thinkingabout all of those things and
how it's going to play into myability to progress, especially
professionally.
So for me it's really aboutthat inspiration level, right,
and how do we help each other.
So authenticity isn't aboutbeing perfect.
It's really about being real.
It's about showing up with ourflaws and all, but at the end of

(12:22):
the day, knowing that with allof that stuff we are enough,
right.
So if I had to ask you aquestion, if you were here with
me and I had to ask you aquestion, what's one area of
your life where you could showup more authentically?
I want you to write that downand then going into this week, I
want you to take one littlesmall step it doesn't have to be

(12:44):
big, it can be one little inchinto making that thing happen,
because the idea with thispodcast is really for us to
progress step by step.
Podcasts is really for us toprogress step by step, holding
each other's hand all at thesame time.
So, as we kick off this journey, I want to leave you with this
Authenticity isn't a trend, eventhough you may see the word all

(13:05):
the time and you may hearpeople talk about it all the
time.
It's a lifestyle.
It's something.
It is not a final destination.
It is a journey.
It's something that we willalways work on.
I'm on here and I'm talkingabout authenticity and I'm
talking about the authentic lifeand all the things.
But that doesn't mean that Istill don't shrink myself in

(13:25):
certain spaces and with certainpeople.
That doesn't mean that I don'twear a mask anymore.
It just means that I think it'simportant that we all figure
out ways that we don't have todo that and that we do those
things together.
So, ultimately, it's aboutshowing up as yourself every
single day, even when it's hardright, because, trust me, it's

(13:48):
going to be worth it in the end.
I will tell anybody.
When you can show up as much ofyou as you can authentically, as
a hundred proof, people get thebest version of you.
You have to shrink yourself andwear a mask and use a lot of
mental capacity and bandwidth tobe in places to interact with

(14:09):
people.
People don't get the bestversion of you.
They get a watered down versionof you version of you.
They get a watered down versionof you.
And so this is really about howdo I help, or how do we help
each other get to a place ofreally embracing being ourselves
and being okay with that.
But then that comes with makinghard decisions, right?
Because if showing up a hundredproof is a problem for you,

(14:34):
then I got to ask myself is thata space that I want to remain
in?
Is that a person I want toremain?
I want to continue to engagewith?
Right?
So it not only comes with usreally doing some
self-reflection, but it alsocomes with us having to make
some hard decisions and somehard choices.
So, but we're going to do thattogether and that's what this

(14:55):
podcast is all about.
So I want to invite you into theconversation.
You can use the hashtag theauthentic hashtag, the authentic
