You may have heard some version for the following phrase in reference to couple communication - “You have a perspective. Your partner has a perspective. Then, there is what really happened.” You also likely are familiar with the research on eye-witness testimony that speaks to just how wildly unreliable eye-witness testimony is in a court of law. So, if our memory is seemingly so unreliable, then what’s the point? What is the purpose of memory; and can it be used in a way to enhance couple communication as opposed to escalation disagreement and amplifying already heightened emotions?
In this episode of Therapists’ Take Podcast, Carrie and Josh are going to have a conversation about memory, its limitations, and how it can be most effectively utilized in couple communication. The structure of this episode will be as follows:
- How does memory serve us?
- Why does memory change?
- What are limitations to memory?
- How can memory be properly utilized in couple communication?
