What if the smallest life forms—bacteria, roots, spores—could teach us how to listen, how to heal, how to create?

In this powerful episode, I speak with Caribbean American visual artist Malaika Ross, whose work bridges soil science, plant wisdom, and the sacred beauty of the Black female form. Raised on the island of St. Croix, Malaika grew up learning plant-based healing in her grandmother’s garden and later studied soil microbiology before turning to painting as a form of storytelling.

In 2023, following a breast cancer diagnosis, her practice transformed again—birthing The Visibility Project and Novel Bodies, Novel Landscapes, two stunning series that center the Black female body in ecosystems both real and reimagined. Together we explore what it means to co-create with nature, to hold space for transformation, and to find power in the quiet.
