of reframing failure asinvaluable feedback and a vital
stepping stone towards achievingprofessional and personal
success.
So if you're ready, let's beginpersonal success.
(00:44):
So if you're ready, let's begin.
Hello and welcome to anotherepisode of Transformative Living
Radio.
I'm Andre Flax, your host andcertified life and leadership
coach.
You know we often hear thatfailure is inevitable, whether
it's in business relationshipsor personal growth.
We all face moments wherethings don't go as planned.
(01:06):
However, what we need tounderstand is that failure is
simply feedback.
It's a neutral event that'sneither good nor bad, but it's
our interpretation of failurethat gives it meaning.
So what does it mean to failforward?
Failing forward is abouttransforming the way we view
(01:27):
failure.
Rather than seeing failure as areflection of our abilities,
failing forward involvesreframing our failures as
feedback or a temporary setbackthat can provide valuable
information for future success.
Now, the truth of the matter is, failure hurts.
(01:47):
It's discouraging, frustrating, and sometimes it can make us
question our abilities andself-worth, but it's important
to understand that theseemotions are natural.
The key to failing forward, then, is acknowledging those
feelings without letting themdefine our future decisions.
(02:07):
Now, when we experience failure, our brains naturally react
with feelings of shame or guilt.
However, the good news is thatthese emotions can be redirected
by reframing failure as anopportunity for growth.
We can begin to see it as apart of the journey, rather than
the end of the journey.
(02:28):
For instance, think of someonelike Reed Hastings, who started
Pure Software, which failed dueto mismanagement.
Learning from his mistakes, hastings applied those lessons
to create the company we know asNetflix, which has transformed
how we consume media andentertainment.
So the takeaway from Hastings'journey shows that failure in
(02:51):
one venture can provide valuableinsight and lessons that
contribute to future successes.
Arianna Huffington is anotherexample of how reframing one's
failures can lead to futuresuccess.
Before founding the HuffingtonPost, ariana Huffington faced
failures of her own when 36publishers rejected her second
(03:13):
book.
However, ariana persisted andbecame one of the most
influential women in media bycreating her digital news
platform.
Now, the takeaway from Ariana'sstory amplifies how resilience
and persistence in the face ofrejection can ultimately lead to
breakthrough success.
So how can we begin to viewfailure as feedback?
(03:37):
Well, first, it's important toreframe failure from a negative
to a positive lens.
When you encounter a setback, don't ask why did I fail.
Instead, ask what can I learnfrom this?
This subtle shift can changeeverything.
Let me share a quick reframeyou can use to reframe failure.
(03:57):
Step one recognize the failure.
It's important to acknowledgewhen things haven't worked out.
Maybe you didn't get the jobyou were hoping for, or the
project didn't go as planned.
The key, then, is to recognizethe failure without judgment.
Step two reflect on theexperience.
Consider what contributed tothe outcome.
(04:19):
Was it lack of preparation?
Maybe the timing wasn't right,or was it something you couldn't
control at all?
Write down your thoughts so youreflect on the experience.
Step number three is to identifythe lesson.
This step is the mostchallenging because it requires
(04:40):
humility and self-awareness.
Ask yourself what is thisfailure trying to teach me?
It could be about patience, better planning or persistence.
Failure is often a mirrorreflecting where we can improve.
Step number four is to adjustyour approach.
Now that you know what wentwrong and the lessons you learn,
(05:02):
you can adjust your approachthe next time.
Remember, failing forward isabout making progress despite
setbacks.
Now this shift from a fixedmindset to a growth mindset is
the key to failing forward, according to Carol Dweck, a
psychologist who developed theconcept of a growth mindset.
(05:24):
She says those who embracechallenge and learn from their
mistakes are more likely toachieve long-term success.
So let's talk about somereal-world examples of people
who, despite their failure andsetbacks, were able to bounce
back by reframing their failureas feedback and, with
(05:44):
persistence, use failure topropel themselves forward.
Before becoming one of thebest-selling authors of all
times, jk Rowling's facednumerous rejections from
publishers for her Harry Pottermanuscript.
Today, rowling's is abillionaire and a global icon.
Her story teaches us the powerof persistence, even in the face
(06:08):
of repeated rejection.
Early in her career, oprahWinfrey was fired from her job
as a TV reporter because she wasdeemed unfit for television.
She could have given up, butinstead she used the experience
to redefine her path.
Today, oprah Winfrey is one ofthe most influential media
(06:29):
moguls in the world.
Steve Jobs was famously firedfrom Apple, a company he
co-founded.
Instead of seeing this as theend of his career, jobs used the
time to found two othercompanies One was called Nex and
the other Pixar the time tofound two other companies One
was called Nex and the otherPixar.
(06:49):
Later, apple acquired Nex,bringing Jobs back as CEO, where
he revolutionized the techindustry with products like the
iPhone.
Now, these stories highlighthow failure can be the
foundation upon which success isbuilt, provided we learn to
fail forward.
So let's talk about somepractical strategies that we can
use in our own lives to embracefailure and use it as a
(07:11):
stepping stone towards success.
Strategy number one is to setsmall, achievable goals.
When you break down your largegoals into smaller, manageable
steps, failure at one stagedoesn't feel overwhelming.
For example, if you're startinga business, focus on mastering
one area at a time rather thanfeeling overwhelmed by the
(07:34):
entire process.
Now, strategy number two isdeveloping emotional resilience.
You see, learning to manage ouremotions after failure is
critical.
Yes, it's okay to feeldisappointed when we fail.
However, we must not let itdefine who we are.
Practice mindfulness orjournaling to process your
(07:56):
emotions healthily.
Bouncing back is a skill, andthe more we practice it, the
better we'll get at it.
The third strategy is to createwhat is known as a failure
journal.
The ideal behind this strategyis to keep a journal where you
document your failure and, mostimportantly, what you've learned
(08:16):
from them.
Over time, you'll start to seea pattern of growth.
This not only builds resilience, but also reminds you that
failure is a part of the journeyto success.
Strategy number four is tosurround yourself with a
supportive network.
Having mentors, coaches, friends and colleagues who
encourage you through failurescan make all the difference in
(08:39):
the world.
These are people who understandthe importance of failing
forward and will help you seethe lessons in the setbacks.
Now, strategy number five is tocelebrate effort, not just
success.
Too often, we focus on the endresult instead of acknowledging
the effort that went into it.
Celebrate the fact that youtook the risk, put in the effort
(09:03):
and tried to do something new, regardless of the outcome.
Now, as we wrap up today'sepisode on failing forward, I
want to remind you that failureisn't the enemy.
Staying down after failure is.
Each failure is an opportunityto learn, grow and redefine your
approach.
Reframing failure as feedbackchanges the game.
(09:26):
So remember success is notabout avoiding failure.
It's about learning from it andmoving forward with more
knowledge, resilience andstrength.
