Speaker 1 (01:11):
Hi friends, welcome back, welcome back.
Thank you for joining us today.
Yes, we appreciate you.
I am going to share about myrecent work trip, which took me
to Montreal, canada, in January, which, if you're thinking, wow,
that sounds really cold, youwould be correct.
But before we get into that, Iwanted to share a couple of
updates.
We've already opened a coupleof cards this year, so we're
going to talk about that, andwe're also being targeted for a

(01:35):
bank account bonus that I thinkwe're going to take advantage of
, which is pretty good.
So, number one, let's talkabout how we accidentally opened
two credit cards by likeJanuary 11th of 2025, somewhat
unintentionally.
Do you want to start the story?

(01:55):
Do I know the?

Speaker 2 (01:58):
story.
Yeah, because remember the carinsurance, or the car insurance,
or yeah, the car insurance wasdue oh yes, so you applied for a
card and it wasn't going to behere on time to pay a bill which
you thought was due next month, next month, but yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
So our car insurance.
We pay it once annually and Ithought that it was due in
february and I think that'sbecause last year I paid it in
February but it's really not dueuntil but it was due January
14th.
And so when I signed in and Irealized that I thought, oh
shoot, I had just gottenapproved for a Chase Inc We'll

(02:36):
talk about that in a second andmy plan was to use the Chase Inc
to pay the car insurance, whichwas $3,000.
, so that's half of the minimumspend right there.
However, I didn't have the cardand I was pretty sure it was
not going to arrive by the 14thin time to pay it.
So I then went down a rabbithole of trying to find a card

(03:01):
that I could apply either you orme for that would give me a
card number right away, andgenerally that is going to be an
Amex card, like they'll giveyou a temporary card number, a
Capital One Venture X card, which I already have, but you
didn't.
Or there were some data pointsof like a city advantage

(03:23):
business card giving you thenumber right away.
So I first tried all the Amexoffers I could find for you or
me, and we kept getting the popup for every single one, which
was like you're not.
You know that's when you're inAmex pop up jail you're not
eligible for the welcome offer, but you can still get the card
if you want for the welcomeoffer.

(03:45):
But you can still get the cardif you want.
No thanks, I'm not interestedin that.
And so I probably tried 10different offers for Amex and
couldn't get one to work.
So then I moved on to theCapital One Venture X, and I
already have that card.
So that only left you to applyfor it.
And I applied you for it andyou got denied.
You got denied for too manyinquiries, which is not

(04:06):
surprising, and that card alsotakes up a 524 spot.
So I didn't really love that.
That's why I was really tryingto get a business card.
But it takes up a 524 spot.
But I was willing to risk it ifit would mean I could use that
card to pay for this insurance.

(04:26):
So anyways, that doesn't work.
You're denied.
So then I try the city advantage.
I think it's a city advantageMasterCard.
Let me just look at my travelfreely app and I can confirm you
already have that card.
So that only left me to applyfor it.
It was a business card, so Iknew it wasn't going to mess up

(04:47):
my 524.
It's the city advantagebusiness world elite master card
, and so you already have it.
So that only left me, and so Iapplied for that card.
I got approved, but they did notgive me an immediate number to
use and I was at this point sofrustrated.
So then I just sign in and Ifigure I'm just going to use my

(05:11):
Capital One Venture X card topay this bill and at least we'll
earn 2x on it.
That's my thought process.
So I sign in, I go to update mybilling information and that's
where I see on the screen likethe option to move my payment
date out 10 days.
And, mind you, I've alreadyspent a solid two plus hours on

(05:33):
this on a Sunday trying to get acard number.
And then I realized that Icould have just moved the
payment date out, which is whatI ended up doing.
I moved it out 10 days, fromthe 14th to the 24th.
I knew my chase ink would behere by then and that's all I
ended up doing.
I moved it out 10 days from the14th to the 24th.
I knew my Chase Inc would behere by then and that's all I
had to do.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Yes, so two credit cards later, here we are.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
So we're halfway to meeting the minimum spend on the
Chase Inc.
As soon as it came in, Iactivated it and I updated the
payment info and paid that.
But yes, so funny story.
The payment info and paid that, but yes, so funny story.
We've got another card to workon the minimum spend for now,
which is the American Airlinescard, and by then I'll have a
good chunk of AA miles, which Iguess is good, but I don't have
a plan for them at the moment.

(06:15):
So that is our saga as to howwe ended up with two cards
already, and it wasn't even themiddle of January.
Going back to the Chase Increally quick.
I know a lot of people havebeen getting Chase Inc denials.
A lot of those denials arecoming because you've already
opened too many.
Duane and I both got thosedenials last year at least once,

(06:39):
if not twice.
All that I did from then to nowwas not apply for any other
Chase cards, only stick tobusiness cards with other banks,
and I did go through and closeany inks that we had that had
been open for longer than a year.
I didn't do it all at once, butgenerally when the I use travel

(07:00):
freely and when that app tellsme like your annual fee is
coming up, I wait for the annualfee to post.
I go into either mine or yourChase account.
I do the secure message and Isay I have an account inquiry
and I basically say I'd like toclose my account, ending in 1234
, whatever the last four digitsare.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
And you don't have to pay the annual fee.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
If it's within 30 days of the annual fee posting,
they will refund the annual feeback.
So no, and so I will continueto do that.
I think there's another onecoming up, maybe under your name
, that's going to post soon, andso then I'll go in and close
that one and then probably wait30 days and try to apply you for
another one.
So our goal this year is to geta few more inks, if we can and

(07:47):
towards the beginning of theyear, and then give chase a
little bit of a rest, becausetowards the end of the year we
are going to be going for theSouthwest companion passes us
again, and those are all chasecards, and so I need to make
sure that we can get approvedfor for those.
So that's the plan.
The other thing I wanted to talkabout is I have been getting

(08:08):
really heavily targeted for anAmerican Express business
checking account, and I've seenvarious offers out there on the
internet, but the one that I'mbeing targeted for is I will
earn 70,000 membership rewardspoints if I apply by January
31st.
That's the highest that I'veseen.

(08:28):
And not only am I gettingtargeted in the mail, but also
in my Amex app.
It's popping up when I sign in.
And so, given that I'm in Amexpop-up jail for personal cards,
I cannot get an Amex personalcard, for whatever reason we are
spending on our existing cards.
I cannot get an Amex personalcard, for whatever reason we are
spending on our existing cards.
You can't get a Amex businesscard.

(08:50):
So you're in pop-up jail forbusiness, I'm in pop-up jail for
personal, so I guess it worksout that at least we, you know,
you can get personal and I canget business.
But in lieu of that, sincethey're targeting me for this,
I'm a hundred percent going todo it, I believe.
Let me open this mailer realquick.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Is there a certain amount you have to deposit in
the account?

Speaker 1 (09:09):
Yeah, so you have to deposit.
I'm pretty sure it's $15,000.
Yeah, so these are therequirements.
So deposit a total of $15,000or more within 30 days of
opening your account, maintainan average account balance of
$15,000 for the next 60 days andmake five or more qualifying

(09:31):
transactions within those 60days.
The qualifying transactions Ialready looked into this are,
like you know make a depositlike into the account, like
another deposit, so like you candeposit $20 and that would be
one qualifying transaction, Ibelieve.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
So what?
We're going to deposit 15,000in this account and just not
touch it.
For what?
60 days.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
Yeah, so we'll just take it from our high yield
savings and put it into thisaccount and leave it there for
60 days Well, a little more than60 days get the points and then
move it on out.
That's what I'm going to do.
The 70,000 membership rewardspoints are going to be worth
more than the interest that that$15,000 would earn in our high

(10:18):
yield savings account.
So that's kind of how I justifythat.
So if you have the money andyou can find this offer
somewhere on the internet, Iwould highly recommend.
We've really been.
I've really been finding thatAmerican Express points have
been the easiest to earn.
Lately In Q4, I have earnedover 100,000 MR points just

(10:41):
through Rakuten alone.
We are heavily spending on yourAmex Gold personal card you
just got the sub for that butwe're also using that for any
grocery or dining spend and sowe're earning 4X on those
categories as well.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
So really just trying to Does that last the entirety
of the life of the card?

Speaker 1 (11:03):
Yeah, that's crazy.
Yeah, I think there's a limitof maybe $25,000 for the year
per category, but we won't hitthat.
We don't spend that much ongroceries in a year, so, yeah,
it's pretty good.
Um, so yeah, in addition to newcards this year, we're really
trying to focus on maximizingour everyday spend, if we can.

(11:24):
I just went to staples thismorning and bought a $1,200 in
MasterCard fee free gift cards.
We will use that at Costco andmaybe to pay some utility bills.
I also got you a $50 Starbucksgift card to load into your app.
I need it and I also got anAmazon gift card for $200 to put

(11:47):
into our Amazon account, justfor whatever we need for the
month.
All in all, I think that'llearn us around 6,000 points
7,000 points, something aroundthere.
So, chan, that's chase points.
So always trying to maximizehowever I can.

(12:07):
Okay, let's get into today'smain topic, which is I had a
work trip last week.
I was in Montreal, canada, formy company's annual sales
kickoff, and I'm not going totalk about the event or anything
like that, because we don'ttalk about work stuff here, but
we stayed at a hotel that youcan book with points, and it's a

(12:28):
program that isn't often talkedabout, and so we're going to go
a little bit into that and I'vegot a few funny stories about
the trip and the stay in general.
So first of all, when I foundout that I had to fly to
Montreal, canada, in January, was I excited.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
No.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
We live in Phoenix where it's generally quite warm.
The fact that I even own awinter coat is somewhat of a
miracle, and I was not excitedto fly into the cold winter
weather.
I even had to ask someone likehow do I do that?
Like how do I pack a wintercoat?
And basically they were like,oh, you're so cute, like that's
adorable.
You wear it on the plane andthen you put it in the overhead

(13:10):
compartment.
And I said, oh, and you wearyour boots on the plane?
And I said, oh, okay, so thatis what I did Wore the coat on
the plane when it was like 60degrees outside here with my
winter boots and put the coat inthe overhead bin.
And that worked just fineactually.
So the hotel that we stayed atwas the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth

(13:32):
in Montreal.
This is an Accor property, soany Fairmont is under the Accor
umbrella.
Accor is more popular in Europe, not super popular here,
although we do have a FairmontPrincess Hotel here in
Scottsdale that I've heard isquite nice and they put on like

(13:52):
a christmas festival every yearso.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
So, what are those?
The tears, princess, queen, andthere another one, um, or is
that just the name?

Speaker 1 (14:03):
I think yeah I think that's just the names of them,
because I also I have anotherwork trip coming up in um march,
april, and it's just that it'sin Austin, it's the Fairmont
Austin, it's not called anythingspecial.
So um built had a promotion, Ithink on January 1st, where you

(14:29):
could get um, like you couldbasically bump up your status
with a core one level.
So I had zero status with themand then I was able to do this
promotion and I got silverstatus, okay, and so basically
that entitled me to prioritycheck in, late checkout and a
free welcome drink.
So nothing fancy, but, you know, nice perks.

(14:52):
However, here's the funny partthe hotel that we went at during
the time we went was on strike, and so that was the other
reason that I was not superexcited to go to Montreal and
stay at a hotel that didn't haveany food service.
So, being on strike, the hotelis part of a union and the

(15:13):
workers were striking and, yes, they were picketing in front of
the hotel from like eight tofive every day.
The expect expectations we weregiven to stay there was we
should expect a lighthousekeeping, so that's someone
that's going to come in andmaybe change the towels and the
trash but not do much else, andum absolutely no food service in

(15:34):
the hotel in terms of likerestaurants or room service.

Speaker 2 (15:38):
I was going to say because banquets, that's how you
got your food while you werethere.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
Yes, all of our food was served from banquets and the
strike was the banquet part wasnot affected by the strike.
So breakfast, lunch and some ofour dinners were done by their
catering service, which was fine.
Actually it was quite good.
Like on a scale of hotelbuffets I would say it was a

(16:03):
slightly above average and yeahso but I really wasn't sure what
to expect.
Going in it did end up beingfine.
We didn't really see the picketline much.
There was kind of a sideentrance where you could enter
the hotel and that is where wewent in and out all the time.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
I mean it was probably too cold to be out
there chanting and hollering.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
Oh, there were people out there.
You could see them from theback, like when you walked by
the main entrance, but it wasnever a disruption for us.
So the hotel also has it canunderground, so you can
basically just go down theseescalators a few levels and
there is a whole mall underthere.
So there was a Starbucks veryclose, a McDonald's, and I tried

(16:51):
to look at the McDonald's menubut it was all in French because
Montreal is French first.
So, uh, but there was abookstore down there, a pharmacy
, like really anything you couldwant, and you could also get on
the Metro from, like, directlythere, so you don't even have to
go outside.
So I would recommend the hotel.
Actually, I rather enjoyed it.
My bed was comfortable, my roomwas warm, it was quiet, I never

(17:13):
needed earplugs, which isunusual for me in a hotel, and
so I mean I would stay thereagain.
I am a little disappointed,though, because I thought I was
going to earn points for my stay, and in my loyalty account it
even told me the number ofpoints I was going to earn.
But then when I just went in tocheck it told it now says, like

(17:37):
my receipt says, my stay wasnot eligible, and I'm pretty
sure that's because we bookedwith a like a conference rate,
you know, and so that is alittle disappointing.
Um, but I'm, we're going totell you how you can book these
hotels with points in just asecond.
Um, the other funny part isthat I did get a free drink, a
little ticket with my room keywhen I checked in, except there

(17:59):
was no place open in the hotelto use it because everything was
closed because of the strike.

Speaker 2 (18:08):
It's funny, they even handed those out.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
Well, I don't think everyone got them, because I'm
pretty sure it was only becauseI did that, built promotion and
upgraded to the silver statusbecause the free drink was part
of that, and I'm pretty sure noone else at my company did that.
I'm sure that I'm the onlyweirdo who loves this hobby and
and gay and treats it, treats itlike a game.
So, um, yeah, so got the freedrink coupon but there was

(18:34):
nowhere to use it.
So they did honor my status.
I'm going to put that airquotes my status.
Um, but it didn't reallybenefit me in any way.
Um, Montreal itself was actuallyquite beautiful.
Um, I like.
We did go out a few times.
It was very cold, Like it wasin the negatives at night,

(18:58):
several, several nightsFahrenheit.
It's too cold for me.
My, my winter coat is quitewarm, though.
I have it because I got it atCostco a couple of years ago
when our oldest son and I took atrip to New York City.
That was when we first startedgetting into points and miles
and hadn't really earned a tonof points yet.

(19:18):
But we went to New York thatwas his birthday gift to see the
Christmas lights Shout out toCostco.

Speaker 2 (19:24):
I love you.

Speaker 1 (19:27):
And I'm telling you, my coat was pretty warm and
people kept saying, whose coatdid you borrow?
Or they would say, how doessomeone from Phoenix Arizona
have a coat like that?
And I was like, hey, I'mprepared, and it was pretty
toasty.
So, yeah, I would recommend.
Anyways.
Okay, so you can book a corehotels using points, Both

(19:51):
Capital One and City.
Thank you.
Points transfer to a core andthey transfer at a two to one
ratio.
So for every 2000 Capital Onepoints or City Points you
transfer, you'll get 1000 a corepoints.
Okay.
So it's, it's not the best,it's not the best.

(20:11):
Redemption Okay.
And then a core points are likethey have a set value and we've
actually talked about thisloyalty program, I think, once
before on the podcast.
They have a set value.
The value is roughly every 2000points gives you around 40

(20:32):
euros, which is roughly $44 USoff of your stay.

Speaker 2 (20:38):
So if you have 4000 points, you can like like turn
that into basically around 80 to90 off your stay um, which
isn't a ton, it's not especiallyfor a hotel like that.

Speaker 1 (20:56):
Yeah, I think the the rate that we paid was like 300
a night for this property, notincluding taxes or anything, and
that was like a conference rate, a group rate?
Yeah for sure I would expectthe regular rate to be much
higher.
This, like in full transparency, while you can use points to
book these properties, Iprobably would not.

(21:16):
I think that's what I said onthe last time we talked about
this too.
I just don't think it's thebest use of your Capital One or
your City Points.
But I think if your goal islike a cheap or as close to free
as possible trip and this islike a bucket list hotel for you
, then sure go ahead.

(21:37):
But yeah, and I mean they havea shopping portal and they have
all the things that otherloyalty programs have but I just
don't think, especially inAmerica, you're getting like the
best value.
There was several Marriotthotels.
Um, within walking distance ofthis property, there was a Hyatt
that I considered staying atactually, uh, because of the

(22:01):
strike.
What kind of Hyatt was it?
I think it was a Hyatt Centric,I'm pretty sure, sure, and I
almost booked it.
I'm glad I didn't, because allof our meetings and stuff were
in the hotel and it was nice tobe able to go back to your room
on a short break, yeah.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
And poop and whatever you want to do Sure, yes, okay.

Speaker 1 (22:23):
So yeah, that was nice and not have to go outside.
But all in all, nice hotelWould totally stay again, but
probably wouldn't use points tobook it.
I would just pay cash and notgo in January.
And also not go in January, yeah, I will say, though.
So a friend and I we did take aI'm calling it a winter, a

(22:46):
wintry Wonderland walk.
We had a couple of hour breakone day, and so we walked from
the hotel to, like old Montreal, which was, I don't know, maybe
20 minutes, and we kind ofwalked around there.
We walked by the St LawrenceRiver, which was covered in snow
and also frozen.
You could see footsteps wherepeople had walked out onto the

(23:09):
river.
So that was.
That was cool, because I grewup going to the Thousand Islands
when I lived in New York and wewould camp there, and that is
also the St Lawrence River, sothat was kind of cool to see it
frozen.
I don't think I've ever seen itthat way before, and we saw,
you know, we popped into a cutelittle cafe.
We had some hot chocolate.
It was cute and fun.

(23:31):
Old Montreal is reallybeautiful.
We also had a couple of eventsthere at night and if you want
to go, if you want to feel likeyou're in Europe but you don't
want to go to Europe, I thinkMontreal is a good bet.
They also had a Canada-themedCanada themed like dinner for us
one night.

(23:51):
So they had like a poutine bar.
I love poutine.
I probably ate it four timeswhile I was there and I was only
there four nights.
It was three, three times and Iwas there four nights.
It's delicious.
If you don't know what poutineis like, my mom was like what is
that?
It's french fries covered inbrown gravy and cheese curds, 10

(24:13):
out of 10.
They also had beaver tails, which is like a kind of like a
fried dough pastry, similar tolike funnel cake or like a
Native American fry bread andthat's like a very Canadian
thing.
They had a lot of smoked meat.
They had a s'mores bar whichwas cute, and then I was telling

(24:36):
Dwayne, when I was a kidgrowing up again in New York, we
went on a field trip to Quebecand Montreal and I remember two,
three things about that fieldtrip.
I remember riding in the back ofa horse drawn carriage in the
cold.
I remember going to an icecastle and I'm talking like a
legitimate full size castle madeout of ice that you could walk

(24:56):
through.
And I remember being in a biglike I don't know cabin type
thing where they had these longrows of snow, slash shaved ice
and they were drizzling maplesyrup on it and then the maple
syrup kind of like freezes andthen you eat it and like vividly

(25:17):
.
I remember that and how good itwas and they had that.
They had like the this I'mcalling it snow, but it's really
shaved ice sounds very can andthey drizzle the maple syrup on
and it like becomes like asticky candy, delicious, so good
, 10 out of 10.
So that was fun for me and Ithink I mean overall.

(25:38):
They sell Christmas lights out.
So it was.
It was really beautiful whenyou looked around at night and
it has like this old world charm.
So I didn't end up disliking itas much as I thought I was
going to.
I actually really enjoyed itand it was beautiful and the
event was done well.
So I hope.

(25:59):
I don't know if that wasinteresting or not.
I hope it was.
But if you're planning a trip toMontreal in January, I would
say, do it.
I think it was.
It was a good time, we had fun.
Just plan on, you know, bringhand warmers, warm clothes and
boots, because it was very icy.
What was it like for you whileI was gone?
Oh, and the funny part is notfunny.
But when I traveled back, myflight out of Montreal oh, I

(26:21):
need to talk about this becauseI did not know this about the
Montreal airport.
So when you fly out of Montreal, you go through and fly into
the US, you go through customsin the airport before you leave
you.
If you have global entry, likeI do, you can use your global
entry.
I was able to do that.
It was super quick and easy.

(26:41):
But once you go through customs, you are stuck in this terminal
that you cannot leave.
You go through customs, you arestuck in this terminal that you
cannot leave and there are nolounges in that terminal at all.
I there were two lounges Icould have accessed using my
priority pass membership and oneof them was the Air France
lounge and I could.

(27:02):
I could get as far as like Icould see the entrance to the
lounge, but I could not get toit because there was a glass
walls all around me and I evenasked someone like hey, do you?
Sorry this is dumb, but do youknow how I can get over there?
And they were like oh, we haveno idea.
And then I googled it andReddit told me you can't because
you've gone through customs.
You are now penned into thislike weird terminal where you

(27:24):
cannot leave, and so that wasthat yeah, that's weird that
they do customs before you getto the US.

Speaker 2 (27:32):
I've never heard or knew that that was.

Speaker 1 (27:35):
That was a surprise to me.
So, um, and then my flight outof Montreal was delayed three
hours, so not only could I notaccess a lounge, but I was stuck
sitting and waiting for a goodfour hours at the gate and it
just kept getting pushed back, which then caused me to miss my
connecting flight out of Dulles, which then caused me to have to

(27:57):
spend the night in WashingtonDC, and I didn't get home until
Friday night instead of Thursdaynight, so that was also
disappointing.
The only saving grace of thatis that I got to spend a good
amount of time in the CapitalOne Lounge in the Dulles Airport
on Friday morning, so thatlounge is still one of the best
that we've ever visited.

Speaker 2 (28:18):
I forget which one that is.

Speaker 1 (28:19):
When we went to see my sister and then we flew out.
They have the barista rightwhen you walk in.
They make your cappuccino orwhatever.
Yeah, and the little platesthey had.
The foodista right when youwalk in they make your
cappuccino or whatever.
Yeah, and the little platesthey had.
The food that was good.

Speaker 2 (28:33):
That little buffet on the wall, yes, and the kitchen,
okay, yeah.

Speaker 1 (28:37):
Yeah, so it's a really good lounge.
If you haven't been Capital One, venture X cardholders get
unlimited visits.
And, fun fact, I realized theday before that Duane had my
Venture X card, so I waspanicking for a moment because I
thought I wouldn't be able toget in.
But you can get in using yourapp.
I have the Capital One app.

(28:58):
I just went in and went throughlounges and it basically says,
like you have unlimited visitsand you can use your app to.
It says you know, view my pass,I click that and they scan that
and let me write in.
So nice, that was a little protip for you, so you don't have
to carry the card if you don'tneed to.
Okay, I think that about wrapsit up for today.

(29:21):
