Speaker 1 (01:04):
Hey guys, welcome
back to Travel Party of Five
podcast.
My name is Raya, I am one ofyour hosts and I am flying solo
again today.
If you listen to last week'sepisode, we've got a couple
episodes like this coming up,predominantly because, at the
time of recording, dwayne and Iare in the middle of getting
ready for our biggest trip ever, which is going to be two full
(01:27):
weeks in Europe with all threekids, and he is working a ton of
hours before we leave and weare just scrambling to fit
things in where we can, and thishappens to fit in during a time
when he is at work.
So we're going to talk a littlebit about credit card denials
today.
I'm going to share a couple ofvery recent denials that we have
(01:50):
had just in the last 30 days, and I'm also going to give some
tips for each bank, or actuallynot each bank, but for a few of
the different banks, if you'respecifically getting denials
from, say, chase or Amex orCapital One.
I also, before we jump into that, though, wanted to talk about a
(02:10):
couple of other things.
So first of all, we weresupposed to have an episode
about Austin, texas, and stayingat the Driscoll Hotel in Austin
, which is a Hyatt, and that wasgoing to be a girl's trip that
I was going to go on with one ofmy best friends from high
school and unfortunately thattrip got canceled because both
(02:33):
her and one of her daughterscame down with the flu just a
couple days before we weresupposed to go.
So that was super disappointing.
But I did want to share alittle tidbit about the
cancellation process, because Iknow that sometimes things
happen, things come up and we doneed to cancel, and so when you
book with points, generally youcan get those points back.
(02:56):
However, in this particularinstance, the hotel had a
72-hour cancellation window.
The hotel had a 72 hourcancellation window and we did
not cancel until 24 hours prior.
And when this happens, there'sgenerally a couple of things
that you can do.
One of them is to call thehotel and ask to move your
(03:21):
reservation out.
So maybe move it out a week andthen wait a day or two and then
cancel, and then at that pointyou know it's obviously more
than 72 hours and so you're fineand you should get all your
points back.
I didn't do that that.
I was going to do that and Ithought you know what?
Let me just call the globalistline, because now we have
globalist status.
And I thought let me just callthe globalist line, let me tell
(03:42):
the truth, because they don'twant someone who has the flu
coming to their hotel and let mejust see what happens.
And so I did call.
They did say hey, you know, this hotel has a 72 hour
cancellation policy.
I said I understand that, youknow.
Unfortunately, one of you know,my friend, has the flu.
We were not able to make it, sothey put me on hold, they
(04:03):
called the property and theywere able to cancel it without
any penalty.
I am not sure if that wasbecause of my status or not, but
I would say, give that a tryand if that doesn't work, then
maybe go back to the first thingI said, which is to move the
date out and then cancel.
I'm not sure if that hotelalways has a 72 hour
(04:24):
cancellation policy, but what wedidn't know at the time of
booking was the Austin Marathonwas going on the same weekend.
We were there and we didn'trealize that until maybe a week
or two prior.
So that could have just beenthe cancellation policy during
that time because of a big event, who knows?
(04:46):
But just a little data point.
There they were.
I was able to cancel within 24hours with no penalty, so that
was great.
The other thing I wanted to talkabout before we jump into
credit card denials is last weekabout a week and a half ago
actually Hyatt released theiraward chart devaluations, and so
(05:09):
if you're new to points andmiles, I think that can maybe
seem like a horrible thing, butjust to like level set
expectations, they do this everyyear.
So I think overall there are118 Hyatt hotels this year that
are moving to higher awardcategories, and then there are a
few, like around 30, that aremoving to a lower award category
(05:32):
.
We're not going to talk aboutevery single property today that
would be very boring, but I didwant to highlight a couple of
the ones that I'm mostdisappointed about.
And then there is one that I'mnot disappointed about.
There is one that's going downin category that I actually
think is really fantastic.
Okay, so let's get into it.
(05:53):
In the US specifically, there'sa few properties that we are
going to stay at this year orthat we stayed at last year that
are changing.
So the Hyatt Place Flagstafffor one, that's like it was a
really good, like cheap optionto stay in Flagstaff If you live
in Phoenix, which is Flagstaffis just like a two hour drive.
It's going from a category twoto a category three just like a
(06:17):
two hour drive.
It's going from a category twoto a category three.
The grand Hyatt at SFO so thisis an airport hotel is going
from a five to a six Like.
The fact that an airport hotelis even a category five or six
is insane, but we are going tostay there for one night before
our flights to Japan later thisyear, so good thing that that's
already booked.
As a side note, let me tangentfor one second.
(06:38):
If you are planning to stay atany of the properties that I
mentioned that are going up acategory and you have not booked
it yet, you need to book it byMarch 25th I would even say
March 24th, which is coming upvery soon, in order to get the
lower rate.
If you book after March 25th,you will pay the higher category
(07:00):
points rate.
If you're paying cash thisdoesn't really actually know the
cash rate would also be alittle higher.
Anyways, I would book as soonas possible.
Okay, another property we'regoing to stay at this summer
that's going up in category isthe Grand Hyatt Indian Wells
Resort.
They just did a renovation, soI guess that doesn't super
surprise me.
(07:22):
Another one in California that'son here is the Hyatt Regency
Newport Beach.
That's going from a four to afive.
We have also stayed at thatproperty.
It is in desperate need of arenovation.
So I would not.
I would not say that's worthyof a category five at all.
Um, let's see, uh, the HyattRegency Orlando international
(07:44):
airport.
That's a fantastic hotel If youhave to stay like overnight, um
, either before a flight or on alayover, because the hotel is
directly in the airport.
That is also going from a fourto a five.
Coconut Point in Florida, whichis another one kind of in South
(08:04):
Florida, is going up.
The Grand Hyatt Kauai is goingup.
Let's see.
I'm scrolling down the list tosee if there's any other ones
that jump out at me.
The other disappointing thingis that a lot of these
categories that are moving froma four to a five like it's not a
big difference in cost, right,it's like maybe it's 5,000
points for the most part, whichisn't a huge deal.
(08:25):
The bigger deal is that you canno longer use your category one
through four free nightcertificates at these properties
, which then makes thosecertificates a lot less valuable
in my opinion.
I think that's it for ones thatare going up in the US.
Again, that's not the entirelist, but those are the ones
(08:46):
that jump out at me as beingsome of the more popular ones in
the points and miles world.
There is one in the UnitedStates that's going down a
category, that is the HyattRegency Maui, and I'm not sure
if that's because of the firesand they've had low occupancy or
if it's because they redidtheir pool and it's not as good,
but it is going down a categoryand that's really.
(09:08):
It's still a really fantasticplace to stay.
Maui is our favorite Hawaiianisland that we've been to and I
would I would actually considerplanning another trip back there
, maybe in 2027.
So if you've got Maui on thebrain, I would definitely
(09:28):
recommend that hotel forfamilies.
The other good thing is, if youalready have it booked.
The other good thing is, if youalready have it booked and you
know, then the rate devalues, hyatt will refund you the points
difference, so that's alsoreally good.
You don't have to do anythingto get that.
Jumping over to Asia, japan tooka big hit in this devaluation.
(09:50):
So I think there's maybe 10properties in Japan that are all
going up in category andseveral of them we will stay at
later this year.
So the Hyatt Centric Ginza inTokyo is going from a 6 to a 7.
The Hyatt House Tokyo Shibuyais going from a 4 to a 5.
(10:11):
We will stay at both of thoselater this year.
And again, we actually usedsome free night certificates at
the Hyatt House Tokyo Shibuyaand after March 25, you'll no
longer be able to do thatbecause it's going up to a
category five.
The Ondas in Tokyo, which isalso super popular, is going up,
and a bunch of others.
So that is disappointing.
(10:34):
Another family friendly propertythat's been on my list is the
Grand Hyatt Bahamar in theBahamas.
That is going from a categorysix to a category seven.
The Ondas Papagayo in CostaRica is going from a seven to an
eight.
There's some all inclusivesthat are going up in category,
like a few secrets in Mexico andthat sort of thing.
(10:56):
That's not really our jam, butif it is I would check that if
you're planning to book.
And then, moving on to Europe,in Italy, the Il Tornabloni in
Florence.
I stayed there last year withmy mom and my sister.
It's a phenomenal hotel in aphenomenal location.
It's going from a seven to aneight and I'm not surprised by
that.
I think that that probablymakes sense.
(11:17):
There's also a couple in London, in Germany and a few others,
so you can Google world Hyatt, world of Hyatt, award chart
changes and you can find thefull list.
If there is a property that youare, have your eye on that.
You want to see if it's goingup or down.
(11:40):
The last one that I want to talkabout this is such a
disappointment to me because Istayed there last year, we're
going to stay there again andit's such a good value for
families is the Hyatt RegencyParis Etoile.
This is, or was, a categoryfour Hyatt, so you could use
your category one through fourfree night certificates here.
(12:00):
This is a fantastic hotel forfamilies because you can book
two rooms and fit five without aproblem and they have a
fantastic club that you can bookclub access without even
needing status, and the club isreally great.
It has fantastic views of theEiffel Tower.
It is a little bit outside ofthe city, but not so much that
(12:22):
you can get to the city center, and maybe 10 minutes on the
Metro.
So it's not a bad location andwe are literally staying there
the week that this episode airs, probably.
So that's a disappointment.
It's going from a four to afive.
It's not surprising to me.
It's super popular, it's alwaysbooked out.
(12:42):
But again, it's justdisappointing with the category
one through four free nightcertificates.
So, hyatt, if you are listening, that really should probably
become a category one throughfive free night certificate when
you're considering your awardstatus changes for next year.
Please keep that in mind, thankyou.
(13:03):
Okay.
That wraps up the high endaward chart changes.
Let's jump into some credit carddenials, because I'm going to
share a few denials that we'vehad recently and talk about some
tips to potentially offsetthose denials.
If you're experiencingsomething similar, let me start
(13:25):
by saying, if you are new topoints and miles, that you're
probably not likely to getdeclined in the beginning,
especially if you have decentcredit, like if your credit is
above maybe 740, you're like Iwould not expect you to get
declined, and the other thing toknow that is, if you do get
(13:46):
declined, it is not personal.
I think people get reallyoffended that you know XYZ bank
is declining their application.
You can't take it personally.
It's done by a computer, it's arobot.
It's looking at certain datapoints and it's making a
decision.
There's no feelings involvedand it doesn't say anything
(14:12):
about who you are as a person.
In fact, my personal trainer, Ireferred her to a card and, uh,
she wants to get into pointsmiles and she already has a
venture card, which is a great,a great first step.
And she's like what's my nextcard?
And I said it should definitelybe the chase Sapphire.
So she applied she has greatcredit, um, decent credit
history, um, and she gotdeclined and she was like I
(14:35):
don't understand why it gotdeclined.
Okay, turns out they hadactually sent her a request to
verify her identity, like theyhad called her, and she missed
it, and so that was why herapplication got declined.
So what she did was she calledback again that's how she
learned this and her applicationat the time had expired.
So she applied again and thenthey called her immediately and
(14:59):
she was able to verify heridentity and then she was
approved.
So, step one make sure the bankhasn't reached out to you to
confirm something on yourapplication if you're getting
declined.
Step two again, just don't takeit personally, because we're in
this for the long haul andcredit card denials will happen
(15:20):
to you at some point.
It's just a fact.
So I'm going to tell you thestory of what's been happening
over here and the denials thatwe've had, and why I think that
is, and then I'm going to jumpinto a few tips that I have
learned from jumping down Redditrabbit holes and reading in
Facebook groups about a fewdifferent banks.
So we have a high spend comingup.
(15:44):
We are going to renovate ourmaster bathroom shower and we
are also doing some putting in akitchen backsplash.
We're doing a few homerenovations.
We're going to have theexterior of our house painted
coming up in the next few months, and so we've been saving up
money for this.
We have the money to pay, butobviously we're going to use a
(16:05):
credit card to earn the pointsand get the signup bonus, and so
I originally thought, okay, youknow, if I combine all these
home renovations, plus we havesummer camp bills coming up and
all that, I thought I think wecan meet the minimum spend for
the Capital One Spark card, which currently has an elevated
(16:27):
offer of 200,000 points, but thespend is very high.
It's for a $30,000 minimumspend in three months.
Normally that is something wecould never, ever meet, and so
it's not something that's beenon my radar.
But with all these homeimprovements I thought you know
what we probably could meet thatspend now.
(16:49):
And you know, at the end, onceyou've met the spend capital,
one gives two x on everything.
So you would end up with260,000 capital one points,
which that's fantastic.
I'm like, oh, that I'lltransfer that to Flying Blue and
Heartbeat and get us back toEurope again next year, and that
(17:11):
would be more than enough forround trip for all five of us in
economy.
So that was my original plan.
I did some research on gettingapproved for the Capital One
Spark card and it seemed to bethat if you froze your Experian
(17:31):
credit or, let me add, if youfroze whatever credit bureau had
the most inquiries for you, youwould have a greater chance of
being approved.
So I did that I froze myExperian credit report and I
applied and I was not approved, and then I was disappointed.
(17:52):
So then I went down a rabbithole of looking at each credit
bureau and figuring out okay, they all actually have a good
amount of inquiries, because Ihave opened quite a few cards
for myself this year already.
And so then I thought, well, maybe Duane should apply for the
card instead, because wehaven't opened a card for him in
maybe a few months.
(18:12):
So then I applied for himactually, and he also got
declined, denied, whatever youwant to call it.
So then I was definitelyfrustrated because we have this
great opportunity to open thesecards and get all these signup
bonuses and if I can't getapproved for the cards, then
that can't happen and Icertainly can't have this spend
(18:34):
go to waste, right?
So here's what I did.
I kind of settled a little bitfor opening a few different
cards.
I was able to open a secondChase Inc, and I'm going to talk
more about how I was able to dothat at the end of the episode
I was.
(18:54):
Also American Express has beentargeting me for the Blue
Business Plus card and I havebeen not doing it because the
signup offer was not great.
It was 25,000 points for, Ithink, $6,000 in spend, and
that's not a great offer in myopinion.
If it had been 50,000 orsomething like that, then, yes,
(19:16):
I would have done that for sure.
But in a moment of desperationI said you know what?
I'm just going to do this I canmeet the minimum spend in one
purchase right with the downpayment on our shower and so
signed up for it, got the cardnumber, met the minimum spend
within an hour of getting thecard, and now I've now that's
done I've earned woohoo, 25,000plus whatever 6,000.
(19:39):
So 30,000 plus whatever 6,000.
So 30,000 points.
That's not the best, but it'ssomething.
So that's fine.
And then I also, um, on the sameday that I that I applied for
the chase Inc, I applied for theUnited business card because
that is, uh, has an elevatedoffer right now of a hundred
thousand miles.
I applied for them both on thesame day because I was trying to
(20:02):
avoid multiple credit hits andI was approved for both of those
.
So, as of now, what we'reworking with is the Amex Blue
Business, which I've met theminimum minimum spend for and is
already going to be put away ina sock drawer, and then the
United Business and a ChasingPreferred that I did refer from,
(20:25):
duane, to me.
So we will get the referralpoints as well, and with those
two cards we will finish thespend for our shower, and then
we will also use that as ourspending card for Europe when we
go.
And neither one of them chargea foreign transaction fee.
(20:47):
So that was part of the reasonwhy I wanted the ink preferred,
and so, once we've met those,I'm not really sure what our
next plan is, because we gotdenied in this process of trying
to get cards.
We've gotten denied for quite afew cards, and so I need to
kind of probably take a breakand think through that.
(21:09):
However, I'm going to give yousome tips on if Chase is denying
you.
You know what to do if Amex isdenying you or if Capital One is
denying you.
So let's start with Chase Firstof all.
If you are trying to get aChase ink and you're being
declined, there's a lot of datapoints that show that if you
have more than two Chase inksopen, your chances of getting
(21:32):
approved are pretty low, and ifyou have three or more Chase ink
cards opened, your chances ofapproval are almost zero.
So I would take a look at thecards that you have and any inks
that are over a year, I wouldstart closing them.
I probably wouldn't close themall at once, but maybe close one
(21:53):
this month, close another onenext month and just start to
gear up for your nextapplication.
And do the same thing for yourP2, if you have one.
And then the other thing that Idid that took us a long time
was I finally opened up an EINfor our business.
This is free to do.
You can do it on the IRSwebsite and it's very simple.
(22:16):
And then the last two inks thatI have gotten approved for I
don't know if we talked aboutthis on the podcast already or
not, but the last two inks thatI have gotten approved for I
don't know if we talked aboutthis on the podcast already or
not, but the last two inks thatI've gotten approved for have
been with my EIN and not mysocial security number, and so I
would anticipate that if Itried to apply for a third, I'm
(22:37):
probably going to get declinedif I had to guess, and so I will
then move on to Dwayne and havehim do the same thing.
But up until this year, we haveapplied for all of our Chase
business cards using our socialsecurity number as a sole
proprietor, and we made itpretty far.
(23:01):
I feel like Chase is definitelycracking down a little bit more
.
I think that's understandable, given the over abundance of
Chase ink cards that I knowpeople have been getting over
the last one to two years, andso I think those are two things
(23:21):
that worked for us.
Number one closing out somecards.
I actually just requested toclose one of Dwayne's yesterday.
He had hit the year mark, theannual fee had posted and so I
just sent a secure messagesaying, hey, I'd like to close
this account and as they come up, as the one year mark comes up,
(23:42):
on any future ones, I willcontinue to do the same thing,
and when he has two or less andsame for me, I will then apply
again with his social or mysocial.
But the EIN is what helped usto get approved for the last two
cards.
So I think if you do have abusiness you can get an EIN for
then I would recommend doingthat if you haven't already.
(24:08):
Okay, let's move on to Amex.
So Amex has Amex can deny youflat out or you can get what's
called Amex pop-up jail, whichis where you're applying for a
card and you'll get a pop-upthat says you're not eligible
for the welcome offer, and Amexhas some algorithm that
(24:32):
determines this and no onereally knows what it is.
Some people say if you spend onyour existing Amex cards, then
you won't have a problem or thenthat will help you get out of
Amex pop-up jail For mepersonally.
I am in Amex pop-up jail forany personal American Express
(24:55):
cards.
I spend on my business cardsevery month and I'm still in
pop-up jail for any personalcards.
And what I don't know is if thebusiness spend correlates to my
personal um value with Amex, ifyou will.
And then my husband is theopposite.
(25:16):
So he can get Amex personalcards but he cannot get business
cards.
He's in pop-up jail for those.
So it's frustrating.
I think for the most part wedon't want the card without the
welcome offer.
There are a few that I wouldconsider getting the card for
without the welcome offer.
(25:37):
One of those is the Aspire card, because that comes with a
Hilton free night certificate.
Every year you have the cardand so I would maybe consider
for that card, but for the mostpart no, thank you.
So again, if you are gettingthe Amex pop up, then one way to
attempt to get out of that isto spend, you know, maybe a few
hundred dollars a month on yourexisting Amex cards and maybe
(25:59):
wait two to three months and tryagain.
The other thing I've noticed isif you are getting declined,
like straight up declined forAmex cards, this can be for a
couple of reasons.
One there's a I'm going to callit a rumor because I don't a
(26:20):
hundred percent know that it'strue but a lot of people think
you can only have up to fiveAmex cards at a time.
I'm not sure if that's true, because I know people that have
more.
They also do limit you to oneapplication every five days.
So if you apply, get denied andthen apply again the next day
(26:41):
like I wouldn't do that you wantto give it at least five days.
I think you can apply for twocards within 90 days and they
will approve you, but if it'smore than that they won't.
The other thing I've noticed isone of the cards I applied Duane
for was a Marriott businesscard which was through American
Express, and he didn't getdeclined but it said they needed
(27:03):
more information, and I'venever seen that before.
They basically were requestinga copy of his driver's license
and that sort of thing, which isfine.
I'm happy to send that in.
Except that shortly after I gotthat notice, the Hilton cards
came out with elevated offers, and so I actually would much
(27:26):
prefer he get the Hilton cardwith the elevated free night
offer instead of the Marriottcard.
So I'm now letting the Marriottapplication expire and then I
will apply him for the Hiltoncard, probably at the end of
this month.
So denials can look a lot ofdifferent ways, especially with
(27:46):
American Express.
So hopefully those are somehelpful tips to help you get
around that.
And then let's talk aboutCapital One helpful tips to help
you get around that.
And then let's talk aboutCapital One.
So, going back quickly to mystory about trying to apply for
the Capital One Spark card, Iactually tried several times to
apply and froze different creditbureaus each time and was still
(28:07):
declined for too many inquiries, and this is not surprising.
I do have a lot of inquiries, especially in the last couple of
months, and so TBD on if I'llever be able to get another
Capital One card besides theVentureX that I already have,
because I feel like I'm alwaysgoing to have quote a lot of
inquiries because we do thishobby pretty aggressively.
(28:31):
So TBD on that.
But Capital One does have acouple of rules about
applications, so you can reallyonly apply for one card every
six months with them.
So if you apply for the venture, you know, in March, you really
need to wait until September, october, to apply for another
(28:52):
card.
This also applies to bothpersonal and business cards with
Capital One, so that can be alittle bit frustrating.
And then, specific to theCapital One Spark card, you
cannot have the VentureXbusiness and hold that card at
the same time.
So every issuer has, likegenerally, some family rules.
(29:14):
I would call them.
I would recommend Googling ifyou're not sure.
But specifically for theCapital One Spark Cash, you
cannot hold the VentureXbusiness and this card at the
same time.
So if you did have the VentureXbusiness and you wanted to get
the Spark Cash, you would haveto close the VentureX business.
I would wait about 30 daysthat's how long it takes to fall
(29:36):
off your credit report and ornot to fall off, but to show
that it's closed on your creditreport, sorry and then apply for
the Spark Cash.
And then the other banks thataren't as popular as the Chase's
, the Amex's, the Capital One'sof the world are Barclays and
(30:00):
Citi.
I don't believe Barclays limitsthe number of cards you have
open, but they do just havecredit and income criteria, as
any bank does.
They don't have any specificrules like the Chase 524 rule.
But you are likely to want towait at least six months from
(30:25):
canceling a card before youreapply, and they're also known
to look at prior spending onexisting cards to determine
approval for a new card.
So if you don't have one, thenit's fine.
I just opened the Barclays AAcard at the end of 2024 because
they will at the end of 2025, nolonger issue them, so I wanted
(30:47):
to get it before it's gone.
But other than that, I meanpeople will say Barclays is
picky I personally haven't hadan issue.
Both Duane and I have beenapproved for the Barclays AA
card with no problem, and thenthe other one is Citi.
So again, they don't reallyhave like a maximum number of
cards you can get or anythinglike that, but they do have a
(31:13):
couple of rules aboutapplications.
So you can apply for one card, either personal or business,
every eight days and you cannotget more than two cards in a 65
day window.
They also have specific tobusiness cards.
You can only apply for onebusiness card every 90 days.
So if you're not, again, ifyou're getting a denial from
these banks, I would make surethat you're not breaking these
(31:36):
kind of random rules that everybank has.
Go to Google, type in you know, credit card city, credit card
application denials and searchthrough the articles that come
up.
I also like to put Reddit atthe end of my searches, because
I find Reddit threads cansometimes be a lot more valuable
than a article on Google.
Okay, so we've covered themajor banks.
(32:01):
If you're getting denied, maybesome reasons why.
I think the last thing to kindof wrap this all together is and
I'm really speaking to myselfwhen I say this, as well as all
of you If you're getting carddenials, just remember that.
This is again number one.
It's not personal.
I know that part.
I'm not offended, I'm more justannoyed when I get denied.
(32:26):
But I think, looking at thebigger picture, I want to make
sure that we can do this for aslong as points and miles are
available to us.
And so I think taking a deepbreath and just being patient,
that is my biggest struggle, because I want the card.
I want it now.
I don't want to wait.
Wah wah, wah.
Typical millennial.
So I think just take a deepbreath, right, if you miss out
(32:52):
on a signup bonus because youcan't get approved for a card,
it's not the end of the world.
You will eventually be able toget approved for the card that
you want.
It may just take longer thanyou want it to, and so take a
deep breath.
That is my message to myselfand, again, to all of you.
So, if you're experiencingdenials with me, you're not
alone, but we will persevere.
(33:13):
