I felt an overwhelming urge to break from my regular programming and speak directly to my Latina mama community about what's happening right now. Even though my family and I moved to Mexico over a month ago, my heart is still very much with our people in the United States. This completely unscripted episode comes straight from my heart as I process the Supreme Court's recent ruling that essentially gives ICE agents the green light to racially profile Latinos.

For detailed show notes, visit vivalamami.com/episode136

What you'll hear:

  • Why the recent Supreme Court ruling on ICE discrimination feels so personal to me as a Latina mother
  • The real reason the U.S. government feels threatened by our growing Latino population and economic power
  • My passionate plea to continue raising bilingual, culturally proud children despite the current climate
  • How our community's spending power makes us the equivalent of a top-five world economy
  • A call to action for all Latina mamas - those with privilege and those without - to stand together

(00:02):
This is a kind of random episodethat is pretty much unscripted
and it's almost like aninterrupted type episode because
I feel the urge in a way to.

(00:22):
Speak up and just share what I'mcurrently feeling with
everything going on as far aslike the current events that are
going on in the United Statesand let alone this week, I'm
just mind blown, although youalready know that my family and

(00:44):
I moved to Mexico, which is alittle over a month now.
I am still in touch with thingsthat are going on in the United
States, not just current events, but the current political
climate.
Things that are going on with myfamily, things that are going on
in as Latina moms.

(01:07):
And so even though I am awayfrom where we are from, I still
wanna be in touch.
I still wanna know what is goingon and considering that this is
a Latina motherhood podcast andplatform overall.
I felt the urge to just show uphere and offering space to you

(01:34):
because it is very necessary, especially in current times like
these.
Even though the majority of myepisodes are heartfelt, they're
warm, they're informative.
I don't really put much in mypersonal life into this podcast.
I might be doing it a little bitmore on social media whenever I

(01:57):
have the time to show up.
But now through this podcast, Ifeel like I have to just, speak
up a little bit more, especiallywith the current events that are
happening right now.
Just because as a, we arecurrently hurting.
We are afraid we are.

(02:18):
Just in this weird positionright now and I feel that I
should show up to you all andjust kind of share how I'm
feeling as well.
And hopefully this can open updoors to other mamas who
probably haven't had theopportunity to reflect or even

(02:40):
speak up about.
Everything that is going on inour world.
So if you're interested to hearwhat I'm feeling and what I'm
thinking at this very moment, again, this is a fully
unscripted episode, then stickaround.

(04:03):
So, so I had scheduled podcastepisodes just like I.
Always do, and I decided to skipon this week's content for this
one.
And the reason why is I justhave the sort of need to share

(04:28):
what I'm feeling right now.
I don't do this through thepodcast just because.
I want this to be a little bitmore about Latina motherhood
and, offering resources and tipsand, expert, information from
guests and all of that.
And so I really don't share muchof what I'm feeling and how I'm

(04:52):
doing and all of that, with theexception of a couple episodes,
but with.
Everything that is going on inour world right now,
specifically in the UnitedStates, I feel like I just need
to share because it ultimatelyaffects my presence as as a

(05:12):
Latina and as a mom as well.
If you haven't yet heard aboutthe current decision from the
Supreme Court, where theybasically have voted to
essentially overturn a rule thathappened in la.

(05:36):
About ice agents discriminatingagainst immigrants, specifically
Latinos in that city.
The Supreme Court decided, thatbasically giving the green light
to ice, to racially profileLatinos.
And it's not just.

(05:57):
With their color of skin, butit's also their language or
accents, quote unquote, andwhere they work.
So clearly this isdiscrimination.
This is pure racism that thegovernment is basically

(06:18):
allowing, people to be detainedwithout questions, without
verification, without reallyknowing their story.
This puts us in a position wherewe can get arrested.
We can get detained without anyreason.

(06:40):
It's just so wrong.
It's just so, so wrong becausethese officers are clearly
targeting a specific group andknowing that I fit into this
group because I am a brownwoman.

(07:01):
I speak Spanish.
I may not have thosestereotypical jobs that
immigrants have.
I still am a daughter ofimmigrants.
I am a daughter of individualsthat have had to have jobs in

(07:22):
order to support our families.
This all falls very personal onme and the people that I know,
like my family, my neighbors, myfriends, especially the ones
that I grew up with in acommunity where is mostly Latino
dominant.
Even though we're currentlyliving in Mexico, outside,

(07:45):
clearly outside of the UnitedStates, it still is personal to
me because right now I havefamily that are still living in
the United States.
I have friends and neighborsthat still live in the US and
could be a target for these.
ICE agents for these people thatdecided to have jobs to target

(08:11):
our community.
And so as a Latina momspecifically, I am encouraging
you, whoever you are, listeningto this episode, and especially
if you are a mama of.
Brown kids, then please listenup.

(08:33):
The first thing that I want youto consider is to teach our
kids.
That they are powerful, thatthey belong here, that they have
a sense of purpose in theirlives, but also in our society.
And I think that that issomething that this government

(08:55):
is trying to away from us, Ibelieve, and I'm pretty sure
that this is a sentiment that isacross the board with.
Specifically children ofimmigrants or people that
support and are allies forimmigrants that the United
States is obviously threatenedby US, Latinos.

(09:21):
And what other way Toessentially do these horrific
things by detaining peoplewithout question.
By separating families, byscaring the hell out of children
and be removed from their lovedones.

(09:43):
And so I think that that is avery obvious reason that this
government is threatened by ourexistence as Latinos.
Why?
Well, because we are the largestgrowing, minoritized population
in the United States.
So what that means is that thereis an anticipated growth within

(10:07):
our population where we canoutnumber white people.
In the United States, and wehave seen this growth obviously
because this nation was billedfrom immigrants, and it still
continues on to be that becausethe labor that is being put to

(10:31):
grow this country, to make thiscountry prosper.
It has been proof of the work, very hard work that immigrants
have done, and the majority ofthese immigrants are from Latin
America.
And so now what this country istrying to do is just to get rid

(10:53):
of us.
They're trying to do this sortof ethnic cleansing, which I've
never heard of ethnic cleansinguntil I read about this with
apartheid in South Africa, and Ifeel like it's almost similar to
what the United States is tryingto do here, I'm obviously not

(11:14):
wanting to compare that because.
Things that happened in SouthAfrica was absolutely
horrendous.
But if things continue on, Imean, I do suspect some kind of
apartheid.
And so not only does the UnitedStates feel threatened because

(11:37):
of the labor that we have putin, but we're also powerful.
And statistics show that Latinosare.
The largest consumer in theUnited States.
If Latinos were to be put into acategory, we would be our own
economy.
Like, in fact, we would be likethe top five economy in the

(11:59):
world.
Latinos alone in the UnitedStates.
We're not talking about Latinosin general.
No Latinos in the United Statesspecifically.
So.
When you think about that, wehave so much power.
We have a lot of spending power,a lot of financial power,
because historically, at leastfor me, growing up in Chicago, I

(12:22):
know so many Latinos who haveowned properties and still do,
They're the OG house hackers ofreal estate investing.
They know that buying propertythat involves more than two
units.
Can essentially creategenerational wealth.

(12:43):
And even business owners, there's so many businesses that
are Latino owned, at least inChicago alone.
Then that's only that I canspeak of because that's where I
grew up.
If you go to Lata 26th Street, that alone, that strip, okay.
Which runs maybe like 10 blocks,I think.
If you walk through that strip, you see a small business to a

(13:07):
small business mom and pop shop,to mom and pop shop, like Lata
alone is its own sort of MagMile, like essentially Aita
generates more money than theMagnificent Mile in Chicago.
So.
Yeah, just to give you thatexample, we have a lot of power,

(13:28):
but obviously the governmentright now in the United States
is threatened by our existencebecause they know that we can
outnumber them and not just interms of human capital, but
economic and cultural capital.
And probably more.
I think that the United Statesis just trying to make this as a

(13:52):
way to get rid of us, to get ridof our existence or even to be
afraid.
But as mamas, we need to notonly remind children that they
are powerful and that they havemeaning in this world.
but it's also impactful for ourkids to know their worth, that

(14:16):
their own cultural and communitywealth that they have is so much
more than what the United Statesgovernment is trying to do.
If you are a mama raisingbilingual kids.
Listen to me.

(14:38):
I want you to continue on withthe same way that you have been
doing this for whatever yearsyou have been in this bilingual
parenting journey.
It doesn't matter if the UnitedStates government is trying to
get rid of us by speakingSpanish, because at the end of

(15:00):
the day.
They're the ones that are dumbenough to just know only one
language.
This world that we live in istruly a multicultural world, and
what the United States is tryingto do is to just be in this

(15:20):
monolith type society and.
Clearly we know that the UnitedStates was founded by
immigrants, and so if you are abilingual mama raising bilingual
kids or Spanish dominant kidslike me.
Let's prove this currentadministration that we're not

(15:41):
gonna fall back to that supposedAmerica first narrative.
That we need to be grateful forbeing here and achieve the
American dream because as muchas we have tried to get to that.
For some reason, they're notletting us do that.

(16:03):
And so in the meantime, whilewe're navigating this crazy
world that we're living in,let's prove to this government
that we are.
Very powerful that we are herefor a purpose, that we can
parent the way that we wannaparent, that we wanna raise

(16:24):
bilingual kids because it is anecessity I think the United
States just wants us to onlyhave this one identification of
being American, quote unquote,by only speaking English.
And it shouldn't be that waybecause then our society's gonna

(16:45):
suffer.
Then our kids are gonna suffer, especially if they are so close
and tied in with their URA andtheir language and their family
roots where they can get lost.
This cycle continues on about, you know, feeling lost and not
having the sense of belonging.
Because at the end of the day,we're always gonna be Latinos,

(17:08):
we're always gonna have that.
Like we are always going to beLatinos no matter what.
So why not just show upauthentically It can be scary to
go outside right now because Iliterally had a conversation
with my mom that ice agents arearound where they're currently
at and they're all scared.

(17:31):
Even though my family is veryprivileged to have papers to
live here, we just can't fallinto this.
I think it's ridiculous thatthis government is trying to
take away not just our families, but our existence as Latinos and

(17:53):
as mama.
I know that we have the burdenof holding so.
Many roles and responsibilitiesand tasks at home, but as a
Latina mom myself, I almost askfor you to just continue on to.
Keep up with your bilingualparenting to instill to your

(18:18):
children how beautiful artura isthat it is okay if we have an
accent that it is okay if wehave a difficult last name to
pronounce that it is okay tobring Fri, in our lunchbox.
This is who we are and we cannotbe erased.

(18:40):
We will not be erased.
Like I said, this country wasbuilt in the hands and the hard
work of immigrants, and justbecause this administration is
trying to make this change forobvious reasons of trying to get
rid of us and other immigrantbrothers and sisters.

(19:02):
From different countries, likewe just can't ignore this.
We can't ignore our existence,we can't forget our existence
and who we are as Latinos andespecially as Latina moms.
Keep raising your kids the waythat you wanna raise them, so
that they can be proud of whothey are, so that they can

(19:24):
celebrate their ura, so thatthey know who they are, know
where their family comes from, and that way they can feel this
sense of power, this sense ofbelonging in an identity that
should not be taken away.
And for the mamas who eitherhave legal status here like I

(19:50):
am, who I was born in the UnitedStates and will never ever
experience what it was or willbe like to be an immigrant in
the United States for the maaswho are white passing.
And perhaps may not be everracially profiled to the mama

(20:17):
who have prosperous jobs.
I want you to really reflect andacknowledge the privilege that
we hold and to.
Stand against this ruling thatjust recently happened with the
Supreme Court and also toremember that we need to speak

(20:41):
up.
I have this platform not just totalk about the nuances of Mare
Hood Latina motherhood.
But I'm also here to be anadvocate and ally, a support
system for Latina moms that arehurting right now, especially
the ones that had to say goodbyeto their children because they

(21:05):
got deported or.
I hope that you have some levelof empathy.
And if you know, if youfundamentally know that things
aren't right, then please speakup more than ever, we need
people to just advocate And eveneducate ourselves about the

(21:26):
current situation.
Let's not just read theheadlines.
Let's not just follow peoplethat are just basically summing
up the news for you.
We need to literally educateourselves and so in the show
notes, I'm going to include, information about know your
rights and what you should do incase you are confronted with an

(21:51):
ICE officer or officers.
And then there's also ways onhow you can call and report
sightings as well, becauseagain, we cannot just be
bystanders.
We need to help and supportbecause we are hurting right
now.

(22:12):
We are in tough times and I justwanted to show up here to let
you all mammies know that I'mhere even though I am thousands
of miles away from my hometownin Chicago and I am very

(22:33):
privileged to not experiencewhat people in my city are going
through right now.
Especially with the threats ofthe National Guard going to our
city.
I am still with you.
I am present and I'm here tooffer this space.
If you ever wanna vent or justshare what you're currently

(22:55):
feeling, my dms are always open.
I am here to listen to you.
I am open ears, more than ever,we all need to just get together
and support each other.
And if we see something off thatis going on with our family,
with our friends, with ourneighbors, specifically as it

(23:16):
relates to ice, like yo, like weneed to be educated and really
be informed to know ways in howto support them and even know
our own rights too, because younever know, which is very
unfortunate.
So I know this was a very shortepisode.
But I just felt the need tospeak up it.

(23:39):
This was not scripted at all, like I said, and honestly, it
feels so good to just like letit all out because this was
inside of me for this whole weekreally.
Well, ever since they declaredChicago being in an apocalypse

(23:59):
or whatever, I don't know.
This is so.
We're, I don't know what worldwe're living in, to be honest
and all what I'm saying is thatI'm really glad that it, we made
it to Mexico at the right time, selfishly enough.
But that's when you know thatyou are always welcome to go
somewhere else.

(24:19):
If you don't feel safe, if youdon't feel welcomed and stay
true to who you are, show thatauthenticity to your kids
because I truly believe that ourkids are.
the future.
and if we're raising kids thatcan be proud of who they are and
proud of what they identify as,then hopefully in the next 10,

(24:43):
15, 20, 30, 50 years from now,we can live in a world where
it's empathetic understanding.
multicultural multilingualcountry, All right, amiga.
thank you so much for listening.
we will be going on through ourregular schedule programming, in
next week.
I hope that you're doing well.

(25:04):
Again, my dms are always open onInstagram, or you can email me
at podcast@vivala.com.
And of course, don't forget torate and review the show.
Please share this podcast withan Amiga that you know, and that
way they can be better informedabout Latina mahood, but also

(25:26):
where they can get a little bitof achievement here and there
from me and from others as well.
Alright, well thank you so muchfor listening as in the next

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
