Jayananda, founder of the Institute for
Personal Development, located here in

(00:42):
Hampton, New Hampshire.
Good morning, Swami.
Thank you for being here today.
How are you?
Good morning.
I'm doing pretty good today.
How about you?
Well, I'm doing great today, too.
Thanks for asking.
And we would like to
thank you all for tuning in.
Today on The Voice of Yoga, we will talk
about unconscious patterns and
conditioned responses, which are the

(01:03):
result of world-mind functioning as
corporeal sense in
individual consciousness.
Listen as we discuss the strategy to
master the three modes of mortal thought
by activating Spiritual perception.
In this podcast, we will explain the
importance of rebirthing the physical
body in the invisible, intangible
Omnipresence by training

(01:25):
the Mind to serve Spirit.

We are Talking Consciousness.
Join the Kriya Yoga Spiritual Advance to
get the Light in your
soul and reflect Divinity.
Swami, the title of today's podcast is,
"Humanity is a
Collection of Carnal Habits."
Swami, tell us what inspired you to have

(01:47):
a podcast with this title.
Well, I know we did another radio show on
bad habits, set up limitations.
And because we are conditioned by the
activity of the mortal mind, which is
blind to the Divine Creation, we don't

(02:09):
really have the opportunity for any
Spiritual influence on our existence.
As we have learned, the mortal mind can't
free itself from its own creation.
To break the habit, we
learn to think differently.
How can we realize our true wholeness?

(02:31):
To do this, we stay with the Bible.
If we notice, the Transfiguration is in
Matthew, Mark, and Luke, but not in John.
And the Resurrection of Lazarus is in
John, but not in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
The book of John begins

(02:51):
with the Transfiguration.
"All things were made by him, and without
him was not anything made that was made.
In him was life, and the
life was the light of men.
And the light shineth in darkness, and
the darkness comprehended it not."
It's essential to understand the use of

(03:14):
the term "man," which doesn't have
anything to do with gender, but is a
level of consciousness or a stage in
development where boys
become men and girls become women.
Mrs.
Eddy gave humanity a wonderful clue in

(03:36):
Christian Healing,
page 14, and I'll read it.
"The preparation for a metaphysical
practitioner is the most arduous task
I've ever performed.
You must first mentally educate and
develop the spiritual sense, or
perceptive faculty by which one learns

(03:56):
the metaphysical treatment of disease.
You must teach them how to learn together
with what they learn.
I waited many years for a student to
reach the ability to teach.
It included more than they understood.
Metaphysical or divine Science reveals
the Principle and method of perfection,

(04:20):
how to attain a mind in harmony with God,
in sympathy with all that is right and
opposed to all that is wrong, and a body
governed by this mind." End of quote.
So we must understand there has to be a
departure from the way we are
approaching our lives today.

(04:41):
If we just continue to think wrong,
breathe wrong, not keep ourselves
hydrated, not concerned with what we're
drinking and what we're
eating and how we're exercising,
then we will continue to perpetuate the
same bad living habit that has kept

(05:01):
humanity at this level of consciousness.
Swami, let's talk more about the word
"men," which doesn't have anything to do
with gender, but a
level of consciousness.
What does that look like when we are at
that level of consciousness,
when we are men Spiritually?
Well, see, what we're talking about here

(05:23):
is being a human in the adult state.
Humans in the adult
state are virtuous by nature.
We don't need laws.
The nature of the human is
Spiritual, and Spirit is perfect.
But what's missing is the initiation of

(05:43):
the developmental process.
Earlier times had points of
passage, rites of passage.
Today this is all on the junk pile with
the flat earth
theory, and we have therapy.
But we never get out of
infantile defense mechanisms.
So we're surviving, but we're not
growing, and we're dealing with the

(06:05):
kickback that comes from
the unlived latent potential
to grow psychologically and
Spiritually, to Know the Truth.
We are eternal Spiritual Being.
I'd like to talk more maybe about our
title, "Humanity as a
Collection of Carnal Habits."

(06:26):
So I think you're describing humanity as
those of us who are
not awakened Spiritually.
Would you agree with that?
Yeah, those of us still under karmic law,
those of us that believe in two powers, our
identity is bound up in

(06:47):
the mental-material concept.
The interesting thing about the body is
that the body is a
manifestation of the mortal mind.
You can't have one without the other.
But what we're striving for here is to be
able to separate identity from mental-
material influence and come under the

(07:10):
government of Divine Law.
You can't be under
karmic law and Divine Law.
As Jesus told us, you
can't serve two masters.
So we either believe we are a finite
mortal being and we are in the cycle of
death and rebirth, or we know ourselves

(07:33):
in the way that we are known, which is
Spirit, Perfect and Whole, and we now
walk in the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.
So I'd like to talk more about that word
"carnal," and we know it does come from
the Bible, and Paul uses
this many times in his letters.

(07:54):
And I'm going to read one of them.
This is from Romans 8, and it starts at
5, and we're going to go through 7.
"For they that are after the flesh do
mind the things of the flesh, but they
that are after the spirit
the things of the spirit.
For to be carnally minded is death, but
to be spiritually
Minded is Life and peace.
Because the carnal mind is enmity against

(08:16):
God, for it is not subject to the law of
God, neither indeed can be."
End of the verses.
So Swami, that last part that he says,
"Neither can be
subject to the law of God."
Why is that?
Well, see, we cannot complete ourselves
in the mental-material concept of life,

(08:38):
primarily because it isn't whole.
The only thing that's Real is Spirit.
Spirit is whole.
It's complete.
Mental-material is a reflection or a
thought, which, as we said, it's under
karmic law, material law.
For every action there is an

(08:58):
equal and an opposite reaction.
The mortal mind is a splitter.
It divides that which is before it.
So in the appearance world, we have the
manifested and the complementary,
unmanifested other part.
But Spirit is Whole.
It's Complete.

(09:19):
Without beginning or end,
it's Eternal and Changeless.
Everything depends upon
what we are attracted to.
Desire.
Are we drawn to mental-material,
particles and waves, that which is
visible and tangible or
invisible but tangible?

(09:41):
But as the Bible says to love God, what
that translates to mean is that are you
attracted to that which is invisible and
intangible to corporeal sense, the mind
we're using to get us
through this lifetime?
So what we really have to do is rebirth

(10:03):
the physical body in Spirit, change the
reward circuits of the brain from looking
for something visible and tangible to
looking for something
invisible and intangible.
And this has an evidence procedure.
One of the reasons why we come back to
the Kriya Yoga is because we enlist

(10:25):
strategies in order to initiate the
developmental process.
Even though it was represented, say, for
example, in the Bible by the
Transfiguration and the Resurrection of
Lazarus, it's really not being employed
in our civilization today.

(10:46):
Swami, one question I have about what
I had just read, for to be carnally
minded is death, but to be
Spiritually Minded is Life.
So death, in this instance, we're talking
about a mortal death.
So now my question to you is, we also
talk about from the Bible
where we have to die daily.
Can you explain what the difference

(11:08):
between those two might be for us?
Well, see, death only
appears in the concept.
Death is a belief driven by this hypnotic
state that we believe we are finite.
We believe in two powers.

(11:30):
Divine Law is the power of One.
There is only One Life,
not One God and all of us.
There is only the
Divine Creative Existence.
In order to grasp this, what we had to do
is we had to learn how
to think differently.

(11:51):
We're working with a mind that is
incapable of perceiving the Truth.
So we had to educate ourselves, build a
mental landscape that
could support the Divine Idea.
How can you be immortal
and mortal at the same time?
It's a contradiction.

(12:12):
So you build a mental landscape that
enables you to tell the
truth about the Truth.
The only thing that is Real is Spirit,
the Divine Creation, Changeless, Perfect,
Whole, everywhere, always.
And I really like the way
Herb Fitch told us to do this.

(12:34):
We are to know that we are Christ, not in
the world while
appearing as forms in the world.
What you can start to do with this is
create a mental landscape that will
enable you to resolve the physical body

(12:54):
into a mental image capable
of receiving Divine Revelation.
And the methodology for this is found in
the Transfiguration.
Metaphorically, Jesus taking James,
Peter, and John to the mountaintop where
Moses and Elijah appear, brings the human

(13:16):
being to this level of consciousness
where we are no longer being
individualized by the world mind under
this carnal habit, the belief in the
testimony of the corporeal senses.
And we can now start to
develop human intelligence.

(13:38):
We can separate from being instinctual,
reactive, what was
called "born of woman."
The boy separates from mother.
And we now embark on the hero's journey.
Labors and tasks of the hero developing the
faculty, perception, reason, memory,
intuition, able to make intelligent

(14:01):
decisions based on an educated value
system in accordance
with universal order.
This is called "born of man."
And the next octave of that is "born of
Spirit," where you can achieve what was
called adulthood, the human accepting

(14:22):
themselves to be Spirit.
We're going to pause right here to hear a
word from our sponsor.
Listeners, we'll be back
with you in just a few moments.

{Music fades away)
Welcome back.
For those of you just joining us, you're
listening to The Voice of Yoga and we are
Talking Consciousness.

(15:26):
Swami, let's get back to the metaphor about
the Transfiguration.
I believe we have more
to discuss about that.
The Transfiguration is a metaphor for
phase one in human development, which can
be represented by the symbolism of "born
of man" or how to separate from the

(15:47):
pattern of the physical body.
The hero's journey, where the boy
separates from mother and undertakes the
labors and tasks to become a man.
How to resolve the physical form into a
mental image capable of
receiving Divine Revelation.

(16:07):
The reverse engineering of manifestation.
Things are made of thoughts
and thoughts are made of Spirit.
Form follows function.
There is a progression where we initially
come in and we're reactive, we're
emotional, we're
controlled by mortal mind.

(16:28):
Then we separate from that pattern and we
start to educate our thought up to
Spiritual apprehension, developing our
ability to make conscious choices based
on these values that are instilled.
Eventually we can walk reason through the

(16:51):
open door of Revelation.
So even this resolving a physical body
into a mental image capable of receiving
Divine Revelation is just phase one.
Phase two, of course, is able to exchange
the objects of sense for the Divine Idea.

(17:13):
How we think is what we become.
And as long as we're thinking with the
mortal mind, we are in the
cycle of death and rebirth.
The Bible says, "Except the Lord build
the house, they labor
in vain that build it."
You can do things with the mortal mind.

(17:34):
You can do it with
personal sense and human will.
But they can be done for good or for bad
because that's the nature of the beast.
For every action there is an
equal and an opposite reaction.
The only thing that
is pure is Divine Idea.

(17:54):
Once we have learned how to control how
we think, then we can practice making the
mind an avenue of awareness for the
presence of the Divine Creation.
In that Silence and Stillness, we can now
let Divine Mind do its

(18:15):
Knowing in our awareness.
So we're not making anything happen, but
we are letting Divine Mind
express Itself through us.
This is the purpose of incarnation, to
worship the Creator, to
serve the Divine Principle.

(18:38):
It doesn't mean as a human I do all the
things I think God wants me to do.
It's not about being a good human, but it
is about being a transparency or a
conduit where the Divine Creative
Principle functions through you.

(19:00):
Found in the message of the Christ.
Heal the sick, reform
sin or raise the dead.
That is what Jesus
called preaching the gospel.
Very interesting point to make.
In preparation for the show, I've been
really thinking a lot
about the phrase carnal habits. And
you just explained what
our purpose really is.

(19:21):
As humans, what we do
is we don't think right.
We think that we have
to get up and go to work.
We have to do all these things because we
believe we are
responsible for our own life.
We don't understand that God is not
withholding anything from us.
By us doing all these things, we're
actually putting up that barrier.

(19:42):
Would you agree with something like that?
Yeah, and again, we think God is
withholding everything from us because
the mind we're using is incapable of
perceiving the Divine Creation.
We see what isn't there and
we are blind to what is there.

(20:04):
Human socialization with human conjecture
leaves humanity in a false
sense of life without Principle.
By accepting a temporary sense of life,
we struggle to improve, protect and
extend, only to die in our sin.

(20:24):
Just as Jesus told us. How did we miss
the message of the Christ? Who came to
teach the divinity of humanity.
The term in Yoga is a avidya or ignorance.
In Tibet, they have this wonderful
saying, "You need the finger to point to

(20:44):
the moon, but it is woe unto them who
mistake the finger for the moon, for you
shall never understand the bright light
of the moon nor what a finger is."
This is ignorance.
This is where human conjecture gets us.
It leaves us in this illusion.

(21:07):
We are temporary, vulnerable.
We mistake the finger for the moon and
don't Know the Truth.
Man is Spirit and not matter.
The term in the Bible is repent.
It means think differently.
So we learn how to stop thinking with the

(21:29):
corporeal senses and start
knowing with Spiritual sense.
To do this, we learn it's a process which
begins with things we can and we must do,
along with what we must know and then
execute with devotion and dedication.

(21:52):
To realize the man who is the image and
likeness of the Divine, because it's not
the mortal sense of self.
And this is why Paul
said we must die daily.
Not kill your physical body, but give up
the belief in a personal sense of self

(22:13):
and accept the Spiritual fact of Being.
So Swami, you did mention that it is a
process which begins with
things we can and must do.
What are some of those
things we can start doing now?
Well, this is why I really like Kriya
Yoga because it's a path of action.

(22:34):
It's a path of knowledge.
It's a path of devotion.
Your path of action is skillful use of
thoughts, skillful use of breath,
skillful use of water, skillful use of
food, skillful use of exercise.
We enlist things like purification of the
mind-body complex, the idea of Yoga being

(22:54):
union with the Divine.
You rebirth the body in the Life Force.
It's a Science and it
has an evidence procedure.
Things happen to a human being when you
have the benefit of a
Principle-centered reality system.

(23:17):
Swami, I really like the fact
that thought is in there.
That is our point.
Most of us really need to focus on
understanding every space is filled with
God, which means where I am, where you
are, where everybody is.
We are all One.
I think that's a big point for all of us
to really start

(23:37):
understanding and thinking.
Yeah, and I guess the key question here
is what does it mean to be Spiritual?
To Know I am One without opposite,
without beginning or end,
Perfect without gain or loss,
resting in Absolute Goodness.

(23:59):
Talk about your happy place,
but it's the only Real place.
The Truth of Being.
Pure, unadulterated Life everywhere
always, without change.
Now is that boring or is it bliss?
The answer is going to depend on whether

(24:21):
we are human or Spirit,
mental-material or Pure of Heart.
Can we have our cake and eat it too?
Can we be mental-material and Spiritual?
And the answer is no, we can't be both.
It is impossible to be under karmic law

(24:43):
or material law and
Divine Law at the same time.
We can't be in darkness
when the sun is shining.
We have to get out of the sun.
We can't Know the Truth and be mortal,
suffer with sickness,
lack and limitation.

(25:04):
We have to be out of the Truth.
All of our problems, the things we
struggle with as human beings, is simply
the absence of Knowing the Truth.
Swami, I like that phrase you had said, the
real place, the Truth of Being.
And I know when you say Being, it's with

(25:25):
a capital B, but I think we have to
understand the Truth of Being, meaning
God, and the Truth of our being.
And what is the difference?
Well, once we start to understand what it
is to be Spirit, incorporeal, this is why
it is so important to be able to resolve

(25:47):
the physical body into a mental image
capable of receiving Divine Revelation.
The idea of graven images as a
prohibition in the Bible because of the
common mistake of worshipping the image

(26:08):
and not the source or
substance of Spirit.
This is the basic concept
of sin missing the mark.
We're mistaking the finger for the moon,
the unreal for the real.
And once you accept you are a finite
mortal being, you're

(26:30):
out of the Father's House.
You are unconscious of the Truth.
And everything else is all about getting
back into the Father's House.
Swami, your thoughts about reversing the
physical body in the Omnipresence by
training the mind to serve Spirit, what

(26:51):
does that look like?
Well, it's exactly what the Bible is
saying when it says, "to love God", to love
God with your heart,
your soul, and your mind.
What it looks like is your physical body
is longing for what is
invisible and intangible.

(27:11):
It's almost like reverse
engineering an addiction.
The problem with an addiction is you've
internalized an image, your physical
body, which is driven by preservation and
survival and seems to have all of that
power, is looking for something that is

(27:34):
actually detrimental to it.
This works primarily because the physical
body has that power of preservation and
survival, but it's blind.
It has no vision or discernment.
This is why we understand the importance
of educating thought up

(27:55):
to Spiritual apprehension.
The mind, the mortal mind, has vision.
But it's feeble and weak.
And so what we're trying to do here is
put lame mind with vision on the back of
blind matter with power.
Once you have your ducks in order, once

(28:18):
you have internalized the right symbol,
the invisible intangible Divine
Omnipresence as your symbol for
validation, this would be symbolized as
Jesus riding into
Jerusalem on the cult of an ass.

(28:39):
Or Lao Tzu riding a bull.
Here you have the human above the animal,
which is now what we
would call being born of man.
Now you can walk reason
through the open door of Revelation.
You're at the right level of

(29:00):
consciousness and you can graduate from
thinking with the mortal mind and now
start to use or
activate your Spiritual senses.
This is why it's a process.
