Voice of Yoga
(00:04):
Welcome to the Institute For Personal Development, Inc.
"Kriya Yoga Ashram." Where total Consciousness
is the new frontier.
Kriya Yoga is union of the individual
with the Divine. Join us!
As we explore the practices to
(00:25):
initiate this process.
(Music) Good morning. Welcome to The
Voice of Yoga. Let's talk consciousness. I am your
hostess, Lisa Winton, and with me is
Kenny Toy, also known as Swami Jayananda,
founder of the Institute for Personal
Development, located here in Hampton, New
Hampshire. Good morning, Swami. Thank you
(00:46):
for being here today. How are you?
Good morning. I'm doing pretty good
today. How about you?
I'm great today, too. Thanks for asking,
and we'd like to thank you all for tuning
in. Today on The Voice of Yoga, we will
talk about inducing the coincidence
between the human and the Divine by
following all the good, beautiful, and
(01:06):
true qualities. In this podcast, we will
explore the benefits of having a proper
sense of the firmament as, and I quote,
"Spiritual understanding, the scientific
line of demarcation between Truth and
error, between Spirit and so-called
matter," end of the quote. That was from
Mary Baker Eddy's "Science and Health
(01:28):
with Key to the Scriptures," page 586,
lines 15-17. Listen as we build a mental
landscape which supports the Divine
Principle of One Life. Welcome to The
Voice of Yoga. We are talking
consciousness. Join the Kriya Yoga
Spiritual Advance to get the light in
your soul and be Divine.
(01:48):
Swami the title today show is "Nurturing
the Divine Attributes." What's the
inspiration behind this topic?
Well, we can't make a silk purse from a
sow's ear. We can't become Truth and
wholeness by drawing from fear and
limitation. Yet we continue to try and
(02:11):
figure out how the unreal became real,
and it doesn't. It never did, it never
will. This reminds me of the stimulus
program for the economy, explained as
taking water from the shallow end of the
pool and distributing it at the deep end,
(02:32):
in order to make the deep end deeper. We
do this when we try to improve the human
with hopes of receiving the Divine.
However, declaring Spiritual identity
without Spiritual perception is no better
than moving the water in a pool. To
accept Spiritual identity, we must be
(02:55):
conscious of Divine Truth, and this is a
process initiated by a practice.
So Swami, if we declare this Spiritual
identity that you mentioned, is that
going to help us nurture these Divine
attributes and qualities?
Well, again, you can't just do this
(03:16):
academically. It's not just an
intellectual accomplishment. You don't
just declare, "I'm Spiritual." By saying
it, there's no power in the words.
Like Mary Baker Eddy says, you must
declare yourself to be Spiritual and
understand yourself to be so.
(03:37):
To be perfect, to be One with the Divine
Principle. Like we say, that's a process.
We have to graduate from thinking with
five corporeal senses to Knowing with
seven Spiritual senses.
And the idea of piercing the veil or
(03:58):
overcoming this world are prerequisites
for knowing the Truth. So today, let's
look at the difference between human
qualities and Divine attributes.
Everything human is dualistic, temporary,
incomplete, and imperfect, while Spirit
(04:21):
is One, Perfect, whole, and complete.
I have here the definition of nurture, and
it says, "care for and encourage the
growth or development." So Swami, how
would you suggest that we
nurture these Divine qualities?
What Jesus means when he says to Peter,
(04:45):
"Feed my sheep," the sheep are the Divine
qualities and reside in the upper waters
of Spirit. To feed the sheep, we must be
conscious of the Divine creation, which
means we have to get on the other side of
the firmament, which is not an easy task.
(05:08):
To do this, we have in
Kriya Yoga a three-fold path,
action, knowledge, and devotion. We work
with the precept, "practice makes perfect
only when practice is perfect." To
prevent the white horse thinking in
Revelation's by charging out only to find
(05:31):
war, famine, and death, to have a game
plan to induce this God experience,
that's what metaphysical and mystical
systems do. The rituals, ceremonies,
ordeals of earlier religions were in place
because we understood; to be able to make
(05:52):
this transition from thinking to Knowing,
from sense to Soul, requires much more
than a declaration that I'm Spiritual,
what we call the physics of Spirituality.
Change the reward circuits of the brain
so that now you're using the invisible,
(06:14):
intangible Divine Omnipresence as your
symbol for validation. This is what
scripture calls "loving God." Jesus said,
"We can't serve two masters. You can't
believe in sickness, suffering, disease,
lack, and limitation, and be a faithful
(06:36):
witness to the Divine creation, which is
Perfect and whole everywhere always."
Swami, you had mentioned earlier we have
to be conscious of the Divine creation,
which means we have to get on the other
side of the firmament. Is that another
way of saying we have to raise ourselves
into a different level of
(06:57):
consciousness, a higher level?
The idea Mary Baker Eddy gave us about
the firmament is very important. The idea
of the Mind, one Mind. In order to do
this, she suggests we have a proper sense
of the infinite. A proper sense of the
(07:19):
infinite for me is found in the man, the
bull, the lion, and the eagle in
Revelation. The symbolism of the fixed
signs on the angles sets up an image
referred to as the body of Christ
consisting of seven personal planets and
(07:40):
twelve signs of the zodiac. "This is my
body, and who eats my flesh and drinks my
blood will never die." Jesus is not
talking about his physical form. He is
talking about this body of Christ, one
body. The visible and tangible evidence
(08:02):
of what was called the Son of God, the
Christ. And the Christ is the go-between,
between matter and Spirit,
life on earth, and what goes on in
heaven. And of course, this is symbolism
(08:23):
for an inner event. It's not about
sending somebody on the moon.
It's really about raising consciousness.
Like you said, we graduate from our
lowest level of consciousness into this
higher level of understanding of Life.
(08:44):
But if we don't have the practices that
initiate the process, then we never get
out of the belief in a
finite, mortal sense of being.
Let's start with that then. What are some
of the practices we can start to employ?
Well, one of the reasons why I stay with
(09:07):
the Kriya Yoga, to find the coincidence
between the human and the Divine. In
Kriya Yoga, we use salutation to the moon
and salutation to the sun. And they are
representation for the four and twenty
elders surrounding the
throne in Revelation's.
(09:27):
The twelve physical/mental positions of
the moon are to lift identity into the
astral image of the One Body, the Body of
Christ. The visible and tangible
representation for the infinite Spiritual
body, found in the seven personal
(09:48):
planets, the twelve signs of the zodiac.
The twelve physical/mental positions of
the sun are to bring tangible evidence to
the Divine attributes which lift identity
out of astral awareness, represented by
the characteristics of Divine qualities
(10:10):
in the twelve signs of the zodiac, into
Spiritual identity, One Perfect Life. In
essence, these movements with Spiritual
Knowing are attuning the mind-body
complex to the Divine idea.
Swami before we break down the twelve signs
(10:32):
of the zodiac and the qualities, explain
to us what it means to find the
coincidence between the human and Divine.
What does that look like?
You see, all the good, beautiful and true
attributes belong to the Divine. However,
on a human level, we are looking for good
(10:54):
and bad. And we accept the good and we
reject things that do not have these
Divine qualities. But we have to
understand, the human is not real. The
human is just an appearance or a
reflection of what is here. It's a mental
image. But if you do not have all the
(11:18):
good, beautiful and true appearing in the
human experience, then you can't be under
Divine influence. And so we are looking
for this coincidence between the human
and the Divine, never thinking the unreal
is real. Now we know the physical body is
(11:39):
a mental image. It is the manifestation
of the mortal mind. It's dualistic.
And so we use it as the check engine
light on the dashboard of consciousness.
Consciousness is experience. We can't be
conscious of Divine Truth and be
(12:01):
experiencing qualities not
of the Divine characteristics.
Spirit isn't good and bad. Spirit is
absolute goodness, Eternal Life. And so
as long as we are getting the Divine
appearances or the good, beautiful and
(12:23):
true characteristics in the testimony of
the senses, we then have a good
understanding. What we are doing is
potentially conscious of the Divine. So
you can accept all the good, beautiful
and true, but when sickness, suffering,
disease, lack or limitation is the sense
(12:46):
testimony, then you know you're not
conscious of Divine Truth. And so rather
than trying to fix what's out there, we
are trying to turn consciousness away,
finding this invisible, intangible
Omnipresence, which is
(13:06):
absolute goodness everywhere always.
Swami how would we apply those
movements to achieve
the Spiritual Knowing?
Well, see, when you're doing physical
exercises, you're working with a physical
body. The shape, composition, condition
of the body are all clues as to how we're
(13:30):
thinking. And so you can use the body,
like we say, as the check engine light on
the dashboard of consciousness. If you
feel pain, discomfort, instability, lack
or limitation, it didn't come from the
Divine creative Principle. And so we're
under the influence of mortal thought.
(13:50):
Rather than trying to fix a physical
body, what we're really trying to do is
be absent from the body and present with
Eternal Life or the Divine Principle. And
we also know Divine Truth in
consciousness resolves things into
thoughts and exchanges the objects of
(14:12):
sense for the Divine idea. However, until
we have Truth in consciousness,
if we don't have perfect posture, perfect
health, then we are climbing the
mountain. We are taking James, Peter, and
John to the mountaintop. So we are
(14:34):
working with personal sense and human
will at some level. By the same token,
the idea of being faithful and orderly
with the objects of sense in order to be
receptive to the deeper things of the
Divine Principle is very different than
(14:54):
making the physical body your goal. It is
just your monitor, a way of knowing how
you're thinking and
what you are conscious of.
We're going to pause right here to hear
more from our sponsor. Listeners, we'll
be back with you in just a few moments.

Welcome back. For those who are just
joining us, you're listening to The Voice
(16:17):
of Yoga, and we are
talking consciousness.
Swami, let's talk about how do the human
characteristics become Divine qualities.
Yeah, this idea of born again of Spirit.
As thought shifts from a mental/material
basis, where we're drawing from particles
(16:39):
and waves, when we are still believing in
two powers and we're under karmic law.
Once we have rebirthed the body in Spirit
and we are now under the influence of
Spiritual understanding, we Know the
Truth. We are no longer under the belief
(17:01):
in two powers, no longer accepting a
temporary sense of life, and we are
identifying with Eternal Life. There is
this chemicalization that takes place as
our thought shifts from a mental/material
basis to a Spiritual basis. Human things
(17:24):
are dualistic, which means all the good
has a complementary unmanifested bad that
comes with it. Under karmic law, what we
put out is what we get back, but for
every action there is an equal and an
opposite reaction. We're under this
dualistic belief system, and once we
(17:47):
graduate into Divine understanding, then
human characteristics then
graduate to Divine attributes.
These Divine attributes don't change.
They don't have a lifespan. They are
Perfect, whole, complete.
(18:09):
So is there a contradiction between human
will and Divine will?
Well, see, we could do things from a
human personal sense of self. You could
do it for good or for bad. Things that
are under the government of Divine Will
can only be done for Absolute Goodness.
(18:33):
And so this idea of Wu-Wei in the martial
arts, doing and letting things happen, or
the effortful work of concentration
becomes the effortless flow state of
meditation. Where human will yields to
(18:53):
the Divine Will. We don't just passively
sit around and let God run our lives.
There is this cooperation that has to
take place because while we are still in
a physical form, we are subject to the
influence of karmic law. We have to
(19:16):
create this ability to prevent
contradiction, the conflict between my
will and Thy Will. The problem is when
our value system is not up to standard,
if we don't have a mental landscape that
will support the Divine idea, we have a
tendency to think human goodness is on
(19:40):
the same scale as Divine attribute. And
it's not; this idea of doing human good
because we think it's God's will. In
order for us to do the Divine will, we
need to Know the Truth. And in order to
(20:01):
Know the Truth, we need the Mind of
Christ. And so there is all of this
preparatory work or preliminary
qualifications we must employ to
demonstrate Divine law with Scientific
certainty. This is one of the reasons why
Mary Baker Eddy encouraged Martha Wilcox
(20:24):
to be faithful and orderly with the
objects of sense. We don't just dismiss
this human experience. You can't just say
God is all, all is good when we're not
getting that coincidence between the
human and the Divine. Like Jesus said,
"Now it is day I must do the work of him
(20:47):
that has sent me. Soon it will be night
when no one can work." While we have a
physical form, this is the time for us to
demonstrate our understanding of the
Divine creation. This is what Jesus meant
by bearing fruit, by revealing the Truth,
(21:07):
being that place where we are glorifying
the Creator, by revealing the Divine
Principle, the perfection of being,
healing the sick, reforming the sinner,
raising the dead. It's revealing the
Divine qualities right where these human
characteristics seem to be. But if we
(21:31):
don't have a plan, if we are not working
with a system that is tried and true,
like Kriya Yoga, which
starts with Yama, control,
self-control, self-mastery, the idea of
controlling how we think is really
(21:52):
finding the way to this Soul sense we are
all aspiring to. Also, say for example,
when we teach an Asana Class, one of the
things we say, Mountain Pose, being able
to stand with your bones supporting you
internally and your muscles relaxed,
(22:12):
perfect posture may not bring you Truth
in consciousness, but Truth in
consciousness must bring Mountain Pose.
So we're working the two ends to the
middle. It's kind of like in what Mary
Baker Eddy said, faithful and orderly
(22:32):
with the objects of sense enables
reception of the deeper things of the
Divine Principle. We begin with human
will and our highest understanding of
right. Then stop, watch, wait, listen and
let Divine mind take over the Scientific
(22:53):
government of the body.
This is an inner dynamic,
but if you do not practice it with a
value system in accordance with universal
order, then it diminishes the return
we're trying to get on our effort.
Swami what can we do humanly that could
(23:14):
maybe help us move forward with what
you're talking about?
Well, like I said, you want to have a
game plan, a metaphysical or a mystical
system. And I stay with Kriya Yoga because
it begins with self control and self
mastery by employing strategies like
(23:35):
skillful use of thought, skillful use of
breath, skillful use of water, skillful
use of food, skillful use of exercise.
Divine assistance comes when we meet the
Divine by turning back to the Father's
House, like attracts like. And this is
(23:57):
how we call Divine Truth into expression
by being like Divine Truth. And so if you
are not working with yourself on these
different levels, the body, the mind and
Spiritual understanding and coordinating
(24:18):
it in some sort of orchestrated game
plan, then they say in business, if you
don't have a plan, you're planning to
fail. If you just think asking God for
help and favors is how you're going to do
this, you may find it
doesn't go far enough.
(24:40):
Swami give us examples of each
skillful uses of thought,
breath, water, food and exercise.
Well, yeah, your number one life
sustaining force on a human level is
thought. And if we don't think right,
well, what is thinking right? It's
knowing the difference between a need and
(25:02):
a want. It's knowing what is of the
utmost importance to sustain your life.
The idea of putting God first, being able
to establish a value system based on this
hierarchy of need. We can live weeks
without food, days without water, minutes
(25:22):
without air, but not a millisecond
without the grace of God. And so we have
the grace of God, but we are reacting as
if we're in danger
because I didn't get a text.
And so just a simple adjustment in
learning how to think right. The next
(25:42):
thing is breathing right. Bad habits set
up limitation doesn't matter what we do.
If you don't breathe right, maximum
volume of oxygen, there are ramifications
because of the complexity
of this human experience.
We're trying to overcome animal
(26:03):
magnetism, human intelligence and the
collective consciousness.
And so if you're not thinking and
breathing right, then how do you expect
to overcome the belief in
something that is hypnotizing you?
And so understanding maximum volume of
(26:24):
oxygen, the operations of the diaphragm
in the breathing process and how that
affects the relativity of everything.
Keeping yourself hydrated, nurturing
yourself with good food, eliminating the
foods that produce
cravings and disturbances,
eliminating all substances that are
(26:47):
interfering with being able to think
clearly, being able to control your
behavior and your appearance.
Exercising right, recognizing that when
Jesus was on the planet, people didn't go
to the gym because your normal everyday
(27:08):
living activity kept you in good shape.
People worked in the fields. They sat on
the floor. Just a simple thing like that.
You train your bones to
support you internally.
Today, we sit down in a chair. So the
relationship between your skeletal system
(27:31):
and your muscular system is interfered
with because we're
seeking external reinforcement.
So when you break fitness down, you do it
into four components.
Strength,
flexibility, balance or
alignment and endurance.
(27:51):
And again, faithful and orderly with the
objects of sense make us receptive to the
deeper things of the Divine Principle.
But it's all relative. If we don't think
right, we don't breathe right. We're not
hydrated. The foods we eat produce cravings
(28:11):
and disturbances and we don't exercise
correctly, then there are
ramifications. And so again,
rather than tempting the hand of the Lord
and accepting the imperfections of the
human influence on this experience, we
(28:36):
trust in the omnipresence of the Divine
Principle. But if we don't make the
effort, if we're not working with a
system that is bringing us so that we can
get ourselves to the point where we have
educated our thought up
(28:56):
to Spiritual apprehension,
and now we can walk reason through the
open door of revelation and experience
the Oneness with the Divine Principle.
Then of course, you haven't taken James,
Peter and John to the
(29:17):
mountaintop metaphorically.
